  1. I'm on record as saying I think its a decent record, if I heard it at Fryers night, if I ever get in at my age, sure I would shake a leg, or at least jiggle my zimmer. I'm also on record as saying also I thought the hype was well done and quite good fun, Just don't think its worthy of accolades its getting from everyman and its dog now, and don't think its a particularly outstanding all nighter record. And its something I can disagree with Mr Rabble about, agree him with far too often these days for my street cred. that alone is worth my dissenting voice.
  2. Which part of my statement are you referring to? Clarify yourself and I can answer just a little easier, my persistent friend.
  3. It was played upstairs at Cleethorpes on Saturday night, and maybe at last Lifeline I djed at too, pass me my trumpet!!! Don't suppose anyone wants to hear I bought it for about £8 of Soul Bowl slightly more than 3 years ago. At time we were sure it was Japanese re-release after it appearing on one of the Solid Smoke LP's as unreleased. It does look incredibly new and a number of copies were found in Japan..............................
  4. And Fryer and James T both said they had copies left and people are still bidding on E-Bay!!! Unbelievable, people just want it all on a plate, no thought at all. I completely echo Chalky's sentiments and anyone not agreeing would love to hear their logic. Mr T and Mr F playing this off acetate or whatever is leading, the other 500 should be filed away for listening but watch them appear all over playlists for next couple off weeks. Baaaahd patter in my opionion!!
  5. Thanks for that Jellybean, should'nt be any problem me playing it then when i come over to guest at some gigs in September eh?? How do the so-called purists on the scene take to it?? Its a great dancer and should be played. Stay soulful. Regards Tony E. OZ The so called purists, the ones I regularly speak to, think its absolutely terrible, has absolutely nothing to do with soul music, or Northern for that matter, and the only DJ's that play it are the sheep like ones that listen to what others say rather than the music they are playing. Sorry but you did ask. Staying soulful Jock
  6. Have to agree Lenny, it was fairly poorly written and a bit sensationalist. Sadly like so many of the autobiographies, they are a bit schmaltzy, the Womack and the recent Tammi Terrell were another couple that were overall a bit dissapointing, however better than none it has to be said, and I always buy them. The best by far is the Marvin Gaye - Divided Soul, yes a bit deep but so was Marvin, and its just heartwrenching his story. Mahalia Jackson's and John Lee Hookers are great, obviously not soul but give a huge insight into the times and the culture that created soul (appreciate it may be a surprise to some it wasn't created in a studio in deepest Wales but there you go) and also Miles Davis (can't remember which one, will add author tonight) is great for just revealing the creativity within Black American culture at that time. All were very well written which I have to say I think is the least most of these great artists deserve.
  7. The other side of the argument (and I thougt Catriona's question were not only very pertinent, they were probably rhetorical as I think we all know the answers) is this is further proof of the sheep mentality and just how easy it is to hype the NS today!! An interesting sociological experiment or a fast cash in, personally I have no problems with either, but at least lets be honest about the funny side of it too. Oh and before you also assume, I did buy it, like I buy most new soul related releases, I think its okay, it doesn't excite me personally enought to dance to it, but may shake a leg to if slightly merry in right environment, not an all nighter for me though!!
  8. Be careful though as couple of different versions, both good but one very not Northern.
  9. The Twilights - You're The One - ? Gary R, master of the new 60's that was too come, liked his beachy stuff, and in all honesty not sure this would get me as excited as it did then, but great memories of a great DJ who paved the way for sounds to come in my opinion
  10. Rock Candy - Alone With No Love - Don-Tee Pretty sure this was Evison who played some fantastic stuff in last couple of years, not 4/4 only by any means, and quite decent soul music, believe it or not, to quote another monster of that great time.
  11. Frank Polk - Love Is Dangerous - Capitol Big Minshull play in my time there, already on refo but only 1 minute, though we deserved the whole one. Just proper Northern Soul to my jaded ears.
  12. Jeeezzzuz Bargain of the year on this one, equally as good as their other Loma 45, and in my opinion, equally as rare if not more, certainly seen less for sale I would say. I think I already have put this on Refosoul, cant check now as am at work, if not will do so tonight. Cmon one of you alleged something different crowd, here it is here. Or is it the wrong tempo for now.......... Sheer class in a glass.
  13. Hi Mark, hope you are well. The Cool World was part of Shirley Clarke retrospective in Edinburgh Film festival, but it sold out almost immediately as did almost all of her films shown I think, we managed to get tickets for Ornette Coleman film she did which was great, a bit off the wall character but a really interesting film.
  14. Okay I should have read this from the end first, But Gareth succinct and accurate as ever. My last word!
  15. And which part of his forgetting more than people know, and his unquestionable soul knowledge, and calling me names because I question his logic is intelligent or affable, followed by Ruby Andrews and Franki Valli postings!! Sorry Dave but you are only sticking up for him BECAUSE of his age, it this was your average Peterborogh bod on here saying the things he has you would be down on him like a ton of bricks. Read the meaning not the lets save the scene with the youth crap, I repeat if this is the future then I am glad its all over.
  16. Which Frankie Valli tune are you pushing tonight to back up this rather large statement. Even if your ego could back up your ridiculous pompous attitude, how come no-one I have spoken to in Manchester knows you? And before you start your foul abuse, I have been speaking to people like Bugz etc, so dont assume old people only like Northern! Do some research before you attack. I have done my research and it throws up some interesting information!!
  17. Maybe if the less than grown ups (and thats in mentality rather than age) didn't keep coming up with the same old ideas that have been around for the last 25 years and were as irrelevant then as they are now, there woudn't be the need to keep bickering. I love the way many people on this site has turned it around now and any attempt at quality control is now shouted down as just those old geezers, soul police etc. etc. If you want a watered down version of the real thing, good, on you go, nothin wrong with that per se, but be clear about your motives for wanting it easy and accessible. I know where to avoid then, having done both over the year. Mike's question about dumbing it down was so pertinent, but obviously sailed over the head of many on here. The reason its been repeated is a large number of people have seen and heard it all before, and interestingly the bickering masses are still here. Maybe that tells you something.
  18. Great call Chalky, got this a few months ago and have only played it a couple of times but was well impressed. He does some interesting covers too on it. Well worth a purchase, sure they will be all over Amazon, and you are supporting a real live soul star (or his family if he isn't!!)
  19. IMVHO (aka covering my a**e) you would have had to take enough of it to kill a horse to even consider Tim Tam anything to do with this. Thats like comparing it to a Dickies (or whatver they were called) song or Ramones record, in fact they probably have more in common than Bim Bam and the Turn Offs or whatever its called.
  20. I paid 3.50 in 1982, when I was learning my trade, as we youngsters used to do, maybe not quite the same now! There is another soul version I seem to remember but at moment cant place it.
  21. Joan what about Joe Phillips I can send and the obvious Patti Labelle although assume you might have, let me known if not. Big Frank and The Essence was a big fave of his that I am sure I have on CD somewhere, let me know if you want it. I really cant wait for this, even though me and Baz and a few others might be looking for a bed, how bout a sleepover at the grave, he would love that, think the old sod would come back to visit us, sorry but am too chicken hearted for that
  22. And what exactly is the relation to Tim Tam, why exactly are you classing the 2 records together. totally lost on the connection. Yvonne Vernee is a proper NS record, Tim Tam is a toy town NS record for the plastic generation, or am I missing something???
  23. I have Jerry Gainey on MGM, among my £3.50 records,, great record, but since you have forgotten more than I know I assume no point on me posting. I also have the teen turbans on Loma but pretty sure there is no connection. Am happy to be convinced otherwise!!
  24. Double post, equally irrelevant!
  25. Touchy. I think based on your not very succint response, this debate is over. However one final part, can I suggest you point out where I said I like rare records, I said I like quality records, the rarity was just an incidental part of the conversation, please stick to the facts. My Amp Fiddler 12"'s are hardly rare but are my pride and joy. And as for sharing music, get over to RefoSoul you will see sharing is my passion, you might even add to the unbelievable wealth of knowledge you claim to have. I suggest you and your baggy trousers come back and lets debate again in 2 years, if you still like Northern then that is, I won't hold my breath.
