  1. The video of Ask The Lonely above says it all, I think its his finest moments of many fine moments, still sounds as stunningly awe inspiringly beautiful as when I first heard it. Oh so sad. Have just watched the clip with him in wheelchair so this was great antitode, Levi as a cool young Black man, the group exuding cool in a way that seemed unique to many of the groups from that era. R.I.P and thanks so much
  2. I did hear about it and do know you dabble more than others on the scene so was being a bit cheeky, was serious about the tracks though, thought as they were CD only (I think) and so much of this stuff passes by without being heard, or at least it does me anyway, might be new to you. The are just plain soul tracks, I will drop you a PM and if you havent heard them will let you hear them some time next week. Next years Prestatyn not that far away and those mixing lessons you are taking can only be beneficial.
  3. I would be interested to hear about the CD mate, do you have details? (The Charly one not the later ones as have them already) Also do you still see these albums about, I have 2 or 3 and always thought it would be good to get the others, they were groundbreaking for their day I would say, and some great unissued stuff that deserves an odd play at the right sort of venues (e.g the Orwell!)
  4. I think we just call it Soul and have done since 1990ish Steve! The great Paul "Trouble" Anderson, the only real Trouble , used to have a great jingle on his fantastic Kiss FM shows (long before it was the station it is now). It was along the lines of "Garage is where you park your car, House is where you live, the sounds of Advance Black Dance" or something like that! And everything he played was soulful (IMVHO!) I was playing a couple of newish tracks other night and actually thought they might be up your street in a Micheal Proctor sort of way, but CD only, you could be the soulful hous Don of the NS scene! Was going to send you clips but thought you might think I was being cheeky Agreed re CC Rodgers, its almost the Frank Wilson of House , there are far better vocalists out there in the House (aka Soulful House, etc etc) world, Forgot to say look out for his wife Su Su Bobien, a fantastic vocalist with some great tracks. Sad to hear that about London not having such nights, mid to late 90's used to travel down their regularly and there were always a number of decent nights, Bobby and Steve have always been involved too, great guys, anyone remember their Prestatyn appearance?
  5. Actually looks quite like Mr Bear the picture above, or at least last time I saw him at Wilton. An expensive one Matey, may be worth your time hassling a fwe of the old Modern guys that dont do much these days as a healthy offer may encourage them to stick to their downloads and sell the vinyl. Sure Mr Murray can put you onto a few potentials, failing that email me and I can contact a couple of people I know. No promises though as I think a few sold last time one went for a decent sum.
  6. Did this come out on 7" Ady? I have a 12" which I could scan and send MP3 to you, may be struggling to do it this week so if urgent might be easier for me to send you record again. If so do I get 2 CD's (and a namecheck, (ego, what ego)) and if so can I choose them as I already contribute significantly to Sonny's/Wills & Charlottes inheritance by buying most of the Kent CD's If you need it sharpish email me as may not get on here rest of day. Cheers Jock
  7. Jeeeez Iain either you are bored or you fancy another food fight, think I will go back to the family mishaps and leave you to this one!! Although of course anyone in their right mind will know that the most significant all nighter was held in a small hall in small mining village in West of Scotland (only time West has been best in Scotland I should say) in a town that was not even the town everyone referred to when attending, Anyone guess which one I mean by my cryptic clues??

Oii keep that very correct and valueable information to yourself until I get an LP!! No Guiness for you at next years Essence

ANd now everyone is off chasing the 45 anyone want to sell me an original LP really cheap, found out last year one I had was re-issue (and yes it does matter to me any lurking EMS members )
  10. I will do you a swap, can you send me yours, Kitch's and Deans as I got my nice fancy new phone and lost all my numbers. Have been meaning to PM you as seem to remember one of my last texts before old sim died was from you about weekend away with boys at your hoose, if so am up for it if going ahead, If you can text me numbers as my fancy new phone seems to ignore business cards or any other smart way of sending me numbers. You are a gent and a scholar.
  11. Martin that is almost more an EMS type Northern comment I would suggest!! I would actually suggest given forums high publicity for any hot new item, and the ease of MP3's these days the chances of vinyl carvers appearing are more likely than a Soussain boot, and therefore they are more necessary now, although agree not that easy to find records that should be covered up. I dont often disagree with Mr Franklin but not with you on this one old man, was going to use my usual you either get it or you dont but wouldnt want you assaulting me with a toilet brush at next years essence Brett! PS I dont know what the record is and quite like that in a perverse sort of way PPS I may not be the best person to comment on this as I covered up a Big Maybelle record way back in the day for Colin Law to play, he got lots of stick for covering up a record everyone would know and I sneaked out the side door leaving him to take the stick. It was 1982 and we were fresh faced youths, honest.
  12. Thats great mate, PM'd you for a few, just dont tell my Bank manager, if he still is in the job that is!! Hopefully didnt look like I was doubting you, its just thought was worth asking. And for recommendations they dont come any higher than Bully's, who I am not speaking to since I am having to go to physio 3 times a week to get over a dead leg he gave me at soul revolution!! Bully mate PM me your email again (yes I have lost it again) need to pass it on to my laywer for criminal damages to my leg muscle, oh and I might have a few CD's for you!
  13. You didnt answer my question (which admittedly was a general one rather than direct to you, but you do seem keen to continue the debate) do you buy all the re-issue CD's that are around at moment, Kent, Grapevine, Soulscape and other legit reissues?
  14. I think this thread proves just why cover ups are an essential and fantastic part of Northern Soul, long may they continue although as Harry says probably much more difficult to find stuff worthy of covering now. Although Mr Dobson and Mr Dyson seem to still be able to find them, maybe why they should be seen as no 1 and no 2 on the "proper" scene these days. Mick H played 2 top quality c/u's at Soul Revolution and it made me tingle knowing people still want to find stuff like that and work with it. The original artist argument just doesn't wash with vinyl, I assume if you are making that statement you buy all the re-issue CD's that are coming out these days? ALthough should probably say thats just my opinion about the hypothetical position of the two Mr D's (even though its a fact IMO ) before I get the usual slating and everyone saying there are lots of people can do just as well!
  15. I was going to PM you but assume you may get asked this a number of times, what sort of condition are your vg+ 45's, is this just on sight grading or is there surface noise on this stuff. Appreciate probably an obvious question but as am sure you will appreciate ebays vg+ grade varies from almost perfect to some that were obviously used for Torville and Dean to practise their spins on - although not suggesting for one minute you would have any this bad. Maybe worth putting up a couple of vg+ soundclips if you can. Some nice records and some nice prices in their
  16. Hi John, just back from hols a couple of hours ago so got a full inbox! Will get back to you over weekend once I have sorted out the nice ones from the hate mail!

    Smoke

Just also remembered was the Keith Curtis not a solid centre job, if so it might have been Keb that played it first, if not then pretty sure Keb had a solid centred Smoke record. Or it might have been Guy that had the solid centre 45???? My memory isnt what it used to be obviously.
  18. Pretty sure Ady C played this at 100 club way back in the day and everyone was dancing till middle section and everyones eyes just went huge (or should that be in most cases huger) in amazement, must admit dont remember it being quite as crazy, but its a decent dance record for 84% of the time!

    Smoke

Keith Curtis - I Got To Keep You Baby, think it was an old Guy spin, but can't remember what it was covered up as. Great record, not heard it for a long time though. Tim, pretty sure Derek Pearson did a Smoke discography in old shades of soul, am having a bit of a house move around at moment (just what I need first day back from holiday!) and will hopefully find my old mags, if so will post it up, assuming I am not imaging it!
  20. Oooh, don't do it John. Would give one of my testicles to get the Lovers back, however my other half would cut the other one out and my dangly bits if I tried at this moment. Fantastic Northern record and I would say much rarer than many in that price bracket! Do I remember rightly yours is a WD John?
  21. Fantastic Northern soul, quality, scarcity and danceable, which despite the doubting Thomas's makes it a perfect NS record. By coincidence Boy Needs A Girl came on the old shuffle this am and also sounds fantastic Quality, cheap and danceable, a perfect Jocko record! Slightly tricky but bunch of wooses if you can't dance to this, may dig it out for Northampton, wouldn't be first time I danced to one of my own records.
  22. it was actually Brian Holland & NY Port Authority was it not. I think I still love it but glad don't hear it anymore as suspect it's one where the memory will be greater than the reality. Probably one of those more Northern than soul , but it used to get me all sweaty!! Remember Colin Law buying this for £50 at Station Road while still covered! Anyway just popped in to say am sitting in Tuscan hills eating good food and trying to Ignore my recent move into the Banking world not being the smartest timed move. Just popped into say can't seem to answer PM's on my new toy so will get back to all Recent pls by 12/10 and I do mean all PMs!
  23. I have Doomed By Jealousy on ABC by her, it is a little cracker Roddy, sure I can play it we ever manage that mid week record session after my hols!!
  24. Karen how much was the Edwin Johnson, I have been looking for that, unfortunately missed that earlier, PM if you prefer.
  25. I have one with it Don't Concern Us on one side and Funky Yolk on the other, but that is definitely the Rising Sun, its quite a different record, almost spoken word. Can't do sound clips but hopefully will try before weekend. I also have the LMIYH and, as always, Gareth good tip, forgot all about having that one
