Silky Hargreaves- I'll Keep On Trying/love Let's Try Again
jocko replied to Jim Ohara's topic in Record Wants
Patience James! And I thought you had stopped buying! -
The 70'S? Get out of here, it was all after Kebs Deep Funk which spawned a whole lot of nights, which then fizzled out when there were 13 dj's left and 12 punters, and every punter was also a DJ. Go figure. More history rewritten, beautifully.
-
He is certainly no Bobby Womack, or even Paul Anka, I will give you that. I always thought it was some sort of Vanity record to be honest until reading above, hadn't thought of the UK release angle, I assume that happened at same time. its one of only two UK 45's I actually own (60's anyway)
-
Soul snob! Its one of those where the sum of the parts works amazingly well, especially in a darkened room saturated with sweaty people, but looking at its consituent parts individually they wouldnt work, just like amyl nitrite! Cmon Mr S, surely you can swing. Any clue to the question, does it appear on early Wigan tapes?
-
What a fantastic Northern Soul record, actually a truly great, moody 60's soul record. When was this first played and where?
-
Where you staying? Thinking of Mercure at Tate, but if there is a chance to run up a bar bill on your room I could be persuaded to change! I assume this is one of your tax residency days back in this country before you jet of on another holiday.....

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Eccentric-Soul-The-Way-Label/dp/B00L1O2DW2/ref=mb_oe_o Don't have this yet, but will get it. The Eccentric label has released some amazing stuff, such off the wall labels etc, and great packaging https://www.amazon.co.uk/Complete-Atlantic-Recordings-Bettye-Swann/dp/B00GJ7CSB2/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1407856631&sr=1-1-catcorr&keywords=complete+bettye+swann And in my top 3 female singers so yes have this, and as you say sheer essential, mind blowing stuff.
-
I had seen that and it was the release date that had confused me, as I thought I had one from last year. Could be my baffled mind, will check tonight.
-
Okay, will purchase tonight. Real interesting release schedule from this group. I agree the Irma one isn't consistent but thought there was enough good stuff to make it worth the purchase, there are certainly some tracks where she appears to be holding back. I actually really like the Philly influenced one, but could understand why it might not appeal to Irma fans. ANd one that could burn up a dancefloor for me! More CD tips always welcome!

Great shout mate, both in Dee Dee and the CD world, there is so much out there at the moment that is simply mind blowing music that its criminal to ignore, and we should be discussing more, and yes Dee Dee is one of the truly great singers. I think I have 4 Albums by her and all are fantastic. Do you know if this has been issued before, I was pretty sure I had bought a Dee Dee Atco CD last year? I have a few of these on French release maybe it was that, must check for tracklists as cannot remember track you mentioned. If you like that, I suspect you will like the Irma Thomas below, a couple of tracks on there should be burning up the more 70's focussed gigs, Mr Bulloch/Mr Taylor I am talking to you! https://www.amazon.co.uk/Full-Time-Woman-Cotillion-Album/dp/B00HQ0BTIE/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1407852425&sr=1-1&keywords=irma+thomas+full+time+woman

Wigan Casino 6/2/81 5Th Oldies Anniversary Live Tape
jocko replied to Pete S's topic in All About the SOUL
I think the more relevant point is Nina Simone MBJCFM is barely Jazz! I can't remember it ever being played there mind, so shows what I know, that old saying if you remember it you weren't there possibly -
I did wonder, and tried to look at Ace, but that was all alphabetical also, surely if you Tony and Ady get a quiet moment you could type up the numerical list again No site of that Jackie Wilson CD on the ACE site either, although it says Kent on the picture, I assume it could be just out of print? There is one suspicously like its title on Amazon, but no pictures or listing, for £150! Get searching in those drawers Thanks for time

Ooh good shout, that top 10 is getting full. For reasons Gareth says, Darrel may just sit outside 10 but Impressions definitely. Bloody hell this is difficult.
-
Okay, I suspect everyone knows, or should know about this fantastic site, but I thought having used it for a point of reference in my last post and the fact it is now in my top 3 resources when searching out info I thought it was worth a mention https://www.soulfulkindamusic.net/index.htm Its an absolutely fantastic resource, could maybe do with some recent updates, but sure Dave will soon be back like us normal blokes spending all night in front of the computer avoiding human converstation. There is so much information on this its scary, so no other reason other than take a bow Mr Rimmer and to bring it to attention of some people who don't know!

Okay, having had a half a dozen or so Kent CD's drop through the letter box this week, and been driving full throttle to Denis Edwards and the Contours CD this week, off I toddled to look through Ace website to have a look at new releases and just peruse the Kent catalogue, as I do some days in a quiet moment at work, to look and admire what is a quite breath-taking contribution to keeping our wonderful music alive and documented, and more importantly, putting some money in pockets that deserve it. However I was horrified to find that it no longer had a numerical listing, only alphabetical, sending a shiver slithering slowly down my spine! Does any geek/anal retentive soul fan ever care about how sorting by artists we have, surely its label number and year of release we want (actually my LP’s and CD’s are sorted by artist, but not good for my Hammer horror pastiche dramatic effect to admit that)! Now I am sure I have looked at this many times on there and should probably know it off by heart, but I felt like my inhaler had been stolen, just before setting off to Everest base camp. Googled furiously, the shakes and sweats getting stronger by the second, and very little came up apart from the attached, the hugely wonderful SKM https://www.soulfulkindamusic.net/kentuk.htm However, this raised some questions, for me anyway, particularly about some of the numbering and what was the first actual CD release. Looking at Dave’s site, it looks like proper first CD is Kent CDKEND 911 - Chi-Lites - The Best Of The Chi-Lites — 1987 Although Discogs, shows the first as Kent CDKEN 901 Jackie WIlson"Ž— Higher & Higher: 18 Soul Sensations 1986 Nothing appears to have been released between these numbers and struggling to find evidence of this Jackie Wilson CD anywhere else but Discogs, Can anyone confirm its existence and more importantly source one for under a tenner. The first under the more familiar numbering system appears to be Kent CDKEND 003 - Various Artists - Slow ‘N’ Moody, Black And Bluesy — 1984 ( I think this should be 1994) However on Dave’s site the next release is, which actually looks to have come out earlier. Kent CDKEND 004 - Dyke & The Blazers - So Sharp — 1991 So questions are, and I appreciate could have asked Ady or Dave direct but thought more fun on here, and may twist a few people to toddle off to buy some, Were there any CD’s before CDKEND911? The numbers on SKM on this series appear sporadic, but consistent with Discogs, so are there other CD’s than this, or was Ady just picking numbers out of a hat, his well known promotional technique for the early days 100 club DJ’s! Is there a CDKEND 001 or 002 ? If not why not? Is Dave’s listing complete, if not can we complete it, as this label deserves its place out there. There is a listing on Discogs but nowhere near as good so thought Dave’s was a far better reference point. I feel the need to buy up all the early releases on this, to defeat my fever from above, so any help appreciated. The initial CD of Slow Moody, is now on its way to Jocko towers, can’t believe I have never bought it, as the initial LP was quite simply stunning, and life changing for me. Once we get some more info we can maybe discuss best Kent CD and why, although I suspect Brett Franklin is sharpening his crossbow bolt at my admission of being a CD collector. I also don’t want to turn this into a discussion or critique of Dave’s great site, although I may open another thread to do this, just because it is equally deserving of credit,.

Shouldn't you be fetching another cocktail for your long suffering wife! Good shout, and you beat me to it. Although I have never actually seen a copy of the Bell LP, I assume some of our members here have one. I would probably have to take Aretha Franklin - I Never Loved A Man as no 1, but yest James Carr, Freddie Hughes and Otis Blue, all in top 10 I would say. Sorry boys but Tempests, as great as it is, would struggle to make the top 50, would definitely make top 500, now there is an idea for a book........

Wigan Casino 6/2/81 5Th Oldies Anniversary Live Tape
jocko replied to Pete S's topic in All About the SOUL
I think that was the last Oldies I went to, or at least went inside before 4, but it was rammed beyond belief was it not? Even more so than the previous years which was my first night at Wigan, I am pretty sure, being just a young thing. I am pretty sure I spent pretty much the whole night on stairs at this one, talking fast, and clutching my newly purchased copy of Roger K, only for it to be finally sat on and cracked (yes I know it was a lucky escape, but I was devestated on the night, £4 was a lot of dosh) when I finally made the dance floor at about 6ish! It was about this night that rumours of closure really started to take off was it not? Nostalgia can be good! I know I should know answers, but its a ll a blur. And I don't like to just make things up unlike other people on some other threads Re BT get on to the Ombudsman or whoever is the regulator, or threaten going public, a few work colleauges have some horror stories about their service when experiencing issues. -

Not falling out but making up things again though, I let it pass last time you acted like an uninformed sanctimonious prick towards me, so excuse me if I don't this time. Where did I say anything about it being due to the scene, I said it was because of the promoter, period. I am desperately trying to not make this thread all about one person, despite some of the bullshit is being written, but I need to defend myself on that. That decision, which was a point of lots of discussion around people in my circle then, was made because (a) I didn't trust the promoter to pull it off, (b) And if he did I didn't trust him to, provide value for money, or to make sure artists received all of the rewards, or even the majority. Yes if I got all of that wrong, I lost, but there were lots of reasons behind these decisions and discussions, none being due to a scene I was leaving behind at the time. So stick to facts about me in future. And without giving you the chance to repeat your last sanctimonious prick accusation at me of making it all about me, I won't bore you with details why your implied accusation re putting scene before artists couldn't be more wrong, all I'll say is know how to differentiate and am happy to go toe toe to you by PM on just how much I put in artists pockets and how. I think there is only one holier than thou attitude here, and in case you are still confused, its not me. -
I will have a bash with my new desktop at weekend, but don't count me in till then, so if it fills up just close. A technophone who works with technology, sure you come across these daily

I think you will find most people think that the ethos of the Kings Hall was the beginning of the end for most people from that period, to be honest. And the multitude of same old same old that is following your business model has killed anything like a progressive free scene, although obviously small pockets continue the fight. It may be popular but its far more in common with my Dads British Legion Sunday afternoon than anything I ever did on the niter scene. I am desperately trying not to get into direct debate with you, as we know how it ends, but the naive part of me thinks if you want to engage in stuff like this, you must have a wider interest. However why is it all about your venues, that's exactly the point I am making. As always its all about numbers and pounds for you. If you only know about your world why try and have a dig at others. For lots of us it was about something different, maybe if you listen for once you might even remember the you of 1974. The sad thing is you do your thing well, and as much as its the complete opposite of what I would ever want to do, there is a place for it. Your constant arrogance and bullying, and snide digs however just makes it impossible to consider your opinion valid. And the USA things are a good point, lots of people raved about the artists, an equal amount, myself included, refuse to go because you promoted it. So why don't you step back from this, add what you know from your knowledge, and be honest enough to say what you don't know, cut out the self promotion and it might be possible to debate with you. -

As everyone keeps pointing out, the 80's decreased rapidly so it was pretty easy to know who was out weekly, Byrnie certainly was, I was out at least monthly and weekly end of decade. So its pretty easy to spot who was there and who wasn't. There are an awful lot of people who claim to be on the scene in 80's who were nowhere to be scene, pun intended. Maybe my definition of on the scene is different from yours. I have just read a book about the 14th century, written by someone alive now, wonder if he had a time machine. This is getting both silly and further off topic. -
I would join if there is a download option, I do have a desktop with CD drive in now, but haven't tried it and after last 3 laptops hassle would prefer download. I appreciate that means it doesn't cost me as much but happy to make donation to a group charity for amount of postage and cost of CD's type thing, or alternatively get bankers drafts for £2.36 and send one each to you all Would include sleeve notes and track-list in download etc.. It worked on EMS once so AJB on here may be able to help.

Hmm, that makes sense of the titles, and maybe the long hair and funny fags too :-) And never even heard of that LP but the Coltrane connection and a cheapish copy makes it too good not to buy!
-
I don't know, sorry I was saying I could buy the fact he is blue eyed, but not necessarily so, but I don't buy it as a pop record. At all. Cmon I thought the only point of keeping people as old as you on here with access was to answer such questions as above!
