  1. PS a few books missing so far, will have a look atg shelves tonight and recommend a few more, its hard to tell whether the thread starter wants Northern books or general soul books.
  2. A very merry Xmas to you and Kerry mate, all the very best for next year, I assume you are sitting with your feet up while Kerry serves you mince pies in her Santa suit...... I have the French book on order mate, think its in the downstairs house from yesterday, don't want to interrupt them today but will get it tomorrow so can give you an update once I get it, might even do a full review here. Take care matey (and if Kerry sees the message, tell her I was only joking honest )
  3. Jeezuz christ, and people say my ego gets in the way, okay from the beginning. I wasn't saying anything about you playing it or not, that would be conjecture on my part, and hardly likely for me to passing by a Barnsley pub by chance the night you played it. I was commenting on the no-one liking it or buying until now, which I KNOW isn't true. I was just trying to add a little other perspective to your conjecture, although this reminds why I rarely bother now. What I was triyng to saying was that I KNOW there is a whole wider soul scene out there that isn't either Northern based or even Soul Source based where they play jazz, soul, house and generally anything new in the world of Black music, which amazingly a few people on here frequent, and a scene that doesn't give a flying fuck what any part of the Northern scene thinks. I was saying that I KNOW this track was being played on this scene independant of any backroom in a pub in the backwater that is Yorkshire*** where people were buying it. Thats all, well done for playing it solid for 4 years, and well done for making it the Frank Wilson of the Yorkshire "soul" scene***, As the other suspects I KNOW its on CD as I have it, I suspect its on 2 CD's but I dont know that for definite. I suspect that it is more likely to be played on the British new release soul scene before any Italian scene as thats generally the way, but I suspect that is of little interest to anyone. I strongly suspect it came out on vinyl before CD as generally thats the way the Italian labels work, I nearly know this as I buy most of this, as do lots of people out there, as a new release. I suspect I am overreacting but I KNOW I am bored shitless of people on here not actually able to debate anything like this without throwing a wobbly, maybe a bit poacher turned gamekeeper, but hey a man can change. It would be nice for people just to accept some people actually have a different perspective. *** I suspect you won#t get these as irony as I am an even bigger unknown in the world than you, however I like unknowns so maybe we should form a group, I promise not to comment next time Anyway, just to prove I can waffle as much as you, my last thought is I suspect I have 2 vinyl copies on the shelf, as I bought an extra by mistake, how about you sell them for a fortune, we split the profits and then you get just reward for our hard work. I'm off, Mulled Gin and Reindeer pie calls,
  4. Thats an interesting theory but I suspect it was being played quite widely immediately as new release in the wider soul scene, which is where I picked it up, as it sold out pretty quickly. It was certainly hammered at one of the weekenders soon after release I suspect by Mr Randle who is generally ahead of the game in stuff like this. It is on a CD also that I suspect is readily available but I assume not what people are after. Depending on how deep the pockets are getting on this now, I may have another look and see if I can find any of the 2 copies I bought and keep the CD. Should I be planning on a warm holiday somewhere.....
  5. Wow is it just me or is Sales forum on overdrive! Its tough out there, a few surprises still sitting there, oh well, just pay taxman in vinyl with some of the cheaper ones! Flairs and Vonnettes gone, very close offer on Continental Showstoppers that if no-one matches full price will get it tomorrow, Of to a Techno 50th, so away till tomorrow! Cheers Jock
  6. I am sure Keb had that first, can't remember what Keb had it covered as. I think we might have found one on that holiday mind. Not sure on that one but reasonably sure it had a few plays before Colin got it.
  7. Bloody hell that is an old tape, that was right at the start of Colin making a name, we brought both records back from a Florida holiday. I kept Smokey but Colin took that one, I came up with the cover up name but sure I came up with some daft long cover up name, Colin would probably never have remembered it when djing. I was amazed how long that stayed relatively unknown given the label. I also covered up Big Maybelle thinking we would get away with in Scotland but Colins first play of it co-incided with a bus coming up from down South, I took pelters for recommending that as a cover up, We were young and foolish is my only excuse, Happy times.
  8. Its a record with great memories, including a drunken day in a Bolton pub with Dave Molloy and Pete Lawson, that still makes me chuckle all those years later. Never used to be that easy to find but suspect not hugely in vogue now,
  9. Lou D Washington - Smokey - Steeltown, fantastic lyrics, not sure how good vocally it was. I remember it well as it was mine that he borrowed I think, Not dug it out in years, will put up a soundclip over weekend, remind me probably. An old Dave Molloy tip, another very common statement in our NS world. I think someone actually tried to cover it up later.
  10. Okay expecting a nasty shock from the taxman so needing to increase my bank balance, can supply scans and soundclips for all if requested. Would prefer bank transfer/cheque/cash but can do paypal if you are happy to do charges or pay as gift. All below are very clean, vinyl and labels except where stated, I try and describe condition rather than guess at a grading as I find it just too arbitrary, I have tried to be as precise as possible, and tried to be err on the critical side. No question asked refunds guaranteed on all if not totally satisfied. All play through perfectly unless stated. Billy Hambric – She Said Goodbye/I Found A True Love (Drum) £175 Tears – Good Luck My Love/What You’re Doing To Me (Smash WD) £175 This has what looks like an address stamp on both sides of label. Larry Davis – The Magic Is Gone (Decca Blue Promo) £75 Clovers – Try My Loving On You (Josie Issue) £75 Vonettes – Touch My Heart (Cobblestone Promo) £75 Embers – Watch Out Girl (MGM Issue) £150 this has lots of marks and scuffs all over vinyl, hence price, it was graded as vg++ by a main dealer when I bought it. There are 2 faint clicks in 2nd half of song. Label has ringwear and very slight fading on this. Howard Guyton – I Watched You Slowly Slip Away (Verve issue) £150. Has a number of marks and scuffs, it was graded as Ex when I bought it. Some surface noise before music starts but absolutely none evident after. Label has some ringwear and a drill hole. Can do pictures of the vinyl for any interested buyer and will provide wav file soundclips. Bobby Angelle – Too Much For You (Money) £200 Dottie & Millie – Talking About My Baby/Nothing In This World (Topper) £200 Eddie Spencer – If This Is Love (Arc) £100 Jimmy Hudson – He Don’t Love You/Whats That (Act IV) £250 The top side has 2 lines all the way around, not sure if they are actual scratches and some scuffs, not sure it wouldn’t clean up but I am a bit nervous of cleaning something at this value. It has a very small label tear, where it looks like its been covered up in the past. The flip side has some marks and scuffs also, Happy to try and send picture of vinyl for anyone genuinely interested. Continental Showstoppers – Not Too Young/Never Set Me Free (Seventy 7) £225 Mamselles – Open Up Your Heart (ABC WD) £175 This has some light scuffs. Steve Mancha – Friday Night/Monday Thru Thursday (Groovesville Demo) £200 Jack Montgomery – Baby Baby Take A Chance On Me (Revue Promo) £150 Bud Harper – Wherever You Were (Peacock) £200 Originals – Ain’t No Sun (Suspension) £100 Has one mark about 1/3 of way in but does not affect play. Has some other light scuffs Has a click for first 15 seconds of record rotating. Flairs – You Got To Steal It (RAP) £200
  11. What actual Northern gigs have you been doing over last 30 years, I don't recognise your name. I suspect that answers my first question but felt it impolite of me to assume, as my good mate Jock McTavish, well known Scottish philosopher used to say, having a loveable if a little camp and lot orange mate who happens to have had a casual relationship with Northern Soul over the years doesn't make you an expert on what the scene is all about does it. I suspect you are a career mobile jock needing some other direction now weddings and Barmitzvah's have replaced you with a K-9 lookalike, good luck mate, lots of soul nights out there for you now adays, not sure the pay (haha) will be what you want, but trying to change the minds of a sector of the scene thats fairly fixed in their views because you have a bad back and need change of career is hardly a compelling argument. Get yourself out to half a dozen all nighters over next 3 weeks (sure there will be that many on) and then come back with a view. In answer to the actual question :sleep3: :sleep3: :sleep3: :sleep3: or being more precise, answer is Just Because!
  12. Aww shit, haven't read the sleeve notes to CD yet, always need to save an evening in on my own to concentrate on those Kent notes. He still had it didn't he, even more poignant then!! Of to put a clip in the 6ts soul one, even though I should be leaving for work!
  13. Bloody hell, great find Stevie/Chalky, awesome singer and he still has it unlike so many from that area, I am totally gobsmacked. Cmon Mr Croasdell with a current Kent CD (which is awesome by the way, cannot believe its not been mentioned before) and singing like this, Cleethorpes and Freddie are just fate waiting to happen. ADY ARE YOU LISTENING!!! Sheer jaw dropping brilliance, and singing ballads brilliantly, please take note weekender promoters!!
  14. I have never seen an actual LP John, I wasnt aware that it had been touted for release, would love to know. I did buy a CD a couple of years ago which I think she did hereself that I am sure had at least one unissued track from that era which was pretty good, Will dig it out tonight, could maybe even change my EMS list, again and pu t it on CD swap!
  15. You really do learn something new every day, this place is really at its best when its informative like this! I never knew there were 2 BC's, that will explain that. I have spent many a night telling people they were tone deaf as they sounded very similar, other than WFB not being a particularly clear recording, oops! I assume from this its the 1004 I have, another pension plan reduction! I will check tonight and let you know! Cmon Cliff I know you will have the rarer one, if not all three. get a soundclip of the earlier one up please!
  16. Were you not just mumping and moaning on another thread about somebody been condescending unnecessarily about your opinions. A little bit consistency might be nice from you, although I do appreciate the to the point (almost) approach you are now taking!
  17. Very sad news, only ever exchanged a couple of words on the one time I met him, but on that night almost everyone's comment about him was how nice a man he was and I think that has been repeated everytime he has come up in conversation since. Really tragic news
  18. Hi John, hope you are well and keeping your head down mate! I am not sure they are different records but the BC is definitely either a better or clearer production when played out loud. I have both so will put up soundfiles later, I am pretty sure John Manship in past has listed WFB as a later issue of BC which would change peoples thinking on it surely. May be tempted to sell BC if you are interested John, was going to sell other one but trimming down a little lately. Cheers Jock
  19. Hi John, hope you are good. If you still have this mate will take it off you. Tried to send email via here as can't PM from work. Let me know, if you do have it I may have to arrange for it to be delivered looking a secret pressie for other half as am on a stict no buy policy at moment!

    Logg

I should have a spare on Ramshorn, the European label, if you want it Barry, can have it for nowt mate as I picked it up for pennies, just need to make sure I didn't give it way already. LP has at least one other track on it, although I am probably teaching you to suck eggs there!! Remind in a few days if I haven't got back to you. Cheers Jock
  21. It works good here Mike, and yes its a great resource, its taking a bit of time getting used to but not been on as much as I would have liked so need to spend some time and I think it will become very user friendly. Said before Mike it may be worth doing a simple users guide, but appreciate there are probably a million things with higher priority, If things calm down for me in next few weeks I would be happy to help with that
  22. I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I feel the truth needs to be told. The real Northern Soul scene is gone, its actually been dead for nigh on 10 years. It all started when a group of the undead were brought back to life, their mission to create an exact image of a time long gone, reflecting the best 18 months of their life's, when they had been Soulies keeping the faith. 30 years later, the faith had mysteriously returned, having been lost in an old Addidas hold all under the stairs for all those years. They soon multiplied, bringing back many other lost souls into the family, marching uniformly to their nearest Working Mans club, they could march as it was never more than 15 minutes away from home. Their initial tactic was smothering those who had survived the barren years of the 80's and 90's with talc bombs and then finally suffocating the remaining survivors with their beer towels, holding up there new leader by the vest straps, spinning him around their heads and crowning them with the exact replica bootleg of Frank Wilson, celebrating by dancing long into the night, well until half past midnight anyway as that's the latest licence the club could get. Now all thats left is a Matrix type illusion of a Northern scene, with all these alien head quarters based around the country, with a high concentration in East Midlands alleged, there are a few pockets of revolutionaries carrying on, again allegedly as don't want them to be caught, rumour says you need to look for the horses in Wolverhampton (although be careful here, there are already aliens imitating the real thing on some weeks), the smell of old jazz cats in London, and the dodgiest toilets in Stoke, they are out there but they are in danger of being overrun/ It needs to be saved, someone is needed to lead the revolution again, where is your Neo, Is he (or she) among the few remaining survivors of the guerilla Northern Scene who retreated to far off places licking their wounds and caressing carefully their vinyl, but remember nothing is as it seems, the ones wearing the long leather coats this time are likely to be the baddies..............
  23. Thats because he has great taste in soul music that people never seem to want to acknowledge on here, mind not such good taste in football teams or Sunday lunches but thats an aside, although sure I was tipping this to people a while ago, bizarrely as I have never had one. Not really his fault if everyone else wants to be Mutton is it! Anyway we are waffling now, Mark I think both are easily 3 figure records now what actual figure you need better informed people than me for that.
  24. Just reading my reply and its not clear but thats what I was meaning Simon, rarity and value on this currently are secondary so its in demand and I think Mark could clear that and more if he puts them up now, but it is one of those things that you need to get timing right. I think Tom Green is rarer but for some reason its never done it for me, must have a re-listen coz normally do like what Mark is selling.
  25. Ahh a serious question, apart from never disagreeing with Val because he is my hero, do you not think this is a good example of the "in vougue" pricing rather than being rare Nev youu talk about on other thread. I think Val's right in what they are worth but yet again everyone is chasing them for whatever reason and therefore the price doubles (unless I am selling!). Anyway one serious thought too much, back to put my head under the pillow and hope the world goes away! PS value aside Intrigues is a fantastic tune and great to hear stuff like this being chased, so get buying people, this does deserve its elevated status, and if anyone has one for £40 I'll take!
