Who would call this Modern, other than a Northern Knobhead, so whats your excuse Mr Santucci? It's just a fairly bland soul/reggae cheesy sing along with Barrington is it not that Northern Knobheads who are trying to be trendy and proving they are "moving on" by liking "modern" that's so old hat not even Boy George would touch it! At least do a bit more digging on what is Modern before trying to foist the Northern interpretation of it on us chaps! PS Toad you are exempt from above obviously as you do know real modern, still a bit surprised you like this though!

Obviously you lot have AHD and never watch the end of the credits on films, it says 2002 at the end which might be a clue. Malc you and your Google habit do make me laugh, keep meaning to say its only polite to name your sources, in this case it would have CYA! I really like this, its done by Elaine Constantine and done very well in my opinion, it's one of the things that for me shows why most people who know her work have great faith in her attention to detail and why lots are convinced her film will show our people up in the best light possible, which no doubt Mr Smith will try and argue just to be contrary. A funny story about this is I was living overseas at the time of this, long before I knew the bad Santucci (Marco) and the lovely Santucci (Elaine) so knew nothing of this, sitting in the room watching MTV with the sound down, (the only way to watch it obviously) I hadn't been on scene for a few years and this came on, I let out a high pitch squeal to my other half about Northern Soul on a video and how whoever done it obviously really know what they were talking about, I spent the next 4 hours searching through the 20 or so European music channels to watch it again and repeatedly watched over it getting all dewey eyed, not long after we were over at Tef's stag do and met up with some old mates again and hey presto I went out again! So thanks Mrs Santucci. Elaine brought out Roisin from Moloko to one of the Soul Revolutions and I believe she has been out dancing to a number of dos, a thoroughly charming young lady, dead interested in the music and danced all night, and never once commented on me hanging around her like a 15 year old star struck twat.

You beat me to it as always GS, Throw Away The Key, sure its already in Refo, on my first Eddie Hubbard deep tape from 1884, and it still sounds good. Bobby Williams When You Pay, fantastic lolloping tune. just my pace for dancing. and Try It Again, a veritable stomper, unless you are one of these tempo terrorists, taking over our planet! Pretty sure they are in refo for some kind soul to repost, I am just flying through while listening to some project manager drivelling on, destroying my soul bit by bit!

Can't be bothered reading through all the wise men posts, but I have at least one copy that I would sell for £20 plus P&P if anyone interested, if not carry on postulating gentleman! ps Guy H all the way, epitome of Mr Hennigan, fag in mouth, ash about 6" long hanging over record but he never dropped a bit!

Brilliant listings guys, special nod to Mr Rimmers absolutely essential SKM site now, often my first port of call for all things discographical! I am pretty sure I put loads more in Refosoul on my gardening leave period, oh how I could do with that time again, will have a look tonight and put some more in, I was down to about 8 numbers missing until recently when I sold a few, I started off only with soul stuff but then with the birth of the internet the non soul became more available to me and bought some of them, anyone want to buy some truly awful but totally collectable Belfast Gypsy, Reb Foster, Sandy Layne or Butch Engle records if I still have them!! Finally agreeing with people on the Bob & Earl scenario made me give up the ghost, although I did think someone had a US WB copy no? Remember the brilliant feature in Dave Moore's Theres That Beat, which you should all own, and if you don't why not! Interesting insights on this label here guys, as you say chock full of quality and great soul records, as well as some real top of the tree Northern stuff. And a fantastic record it is too Tony, real atmospheric record played out loud. I used to have this covered up in the 80's, obviously never playing at venues where wise old sods like you would have outed me on first play! Very interesting list but given the top 10 all having particular Northern interest, and very rightly so, not that surprising. I had never seen a James Cotton or Lucky Carmichael that I can remember to be honest, the Paul Days took me a while but it was only late 80's I actually found it was Northern so may not have been looking that closely but I would have to say the hardest of all the ones I had was the Walter Foster which I only recently got for a decent price, Craig Moerer did turn up one from my wants list but he wanted $100 which I decided to wait, got one cheapare but it has a pressing fault by the sounds of it. I also have a Redd Fox EP type thing that I notice is not on Dave's list, will put details and scan up tonight. Pretty sure I have 2 John Wonderlings Tony, if so you can have one, as had them since the 80's, think I have an issue and a demo so will check when I get home, you can offer me a lifetime supply of Kent CD's or if thats a bit cheeky you can promise always to agree with me in future in return, you can decide which is highest price. Only thing is can't remember condition, lots of the early ones I got I found in the states in buckets so not always great nick. I'll put full sound clips up of both sides tonight. Are you saying that John Wonderling has a Loma LP? I noticed Dave has updated sight for LP's and there are just the few I knew about. Re the issue/demo thing that has always interested me, I have never seen issues of SS or DK now thinking about it to my knowledge, I did start collecting the issue where I already had the demo and vice versa but gave up half a dozen in of cheap ones when my senses suddenly returned! Would it be right to say its not always the issue that is rarer, in some cases the demo is? Have you done any searching around on this? I always thought the Larry Laster demo was very rare but seem to remember somebody disputing this. And finally for those people who don' see CD's as the devils work and care more about hearing the music than their rep in the bootleg world, a decent CD is available but still room for a top quality 100% winner CD based on the Loma vaults, over to you Mr R and Mr C. https://www.amazon.com/Best-Loma-Records-1960s-Label/dp/B000002MT6

Thanks for that Pete, but mines has a hiss pretty much all the way through. I did have one that I gave to Ady Harley as present last night of Stafford that I am pretty sure did not hiss as I played it out at the time, wonder if Ady will consider it a long term loan and pay it back now! Mind it only cost me £2.50 soI can even beat Joan's!

Okay, fighting hard with Mr Lucas for slowest swapper here, I have finally chosen all tunes and sorted them in right order, it will be another twofer for me, one this century music one last century music as looking at audience I got too nervous to try and mix them into one, and couldn't whittle them below 30 tracks, should all be burnt and issued by start of next week at latest starting tonight. One question for the masses is I tend to use Itunes now for burning as much more reliable than Windows media player for ruinging CD's, however keep thinking I wouldn't mind using one of the online packages to do live "mix" so to speak (e.g. fading in and out, not beat mixing so Mr Reed and Mr Franklin can pick themselves off the floor and put their seal clubs down), does anyone use any of them, any relatively easy to use and set up, ultimate aim would be to set them up as podcasts so I can send them off to others. Any hints gratefully taken, other than stop f**king procrastinating and get on with it, can start another thread if more relevant, off to ask the new music bods on EMS as well.

The yellow issue is much much rarer so if you want to swap me your red issue for my yellow issue that will in some small way recompense you for all the records you gave me free back in the day. You know you can trust me!

Isnt this a bit like Asda advertising on Tesco's website, or am I just being a bit thick again?

jocko replied to Petedillon's topic in Record Sales
I'll take the SS& Charly CD if you still have it, I can't PM you here unless you PM me first but if you send me one with payt details etc will sort it by this evening. Just noticed the Tyrone Davis will take that too if you have it. Cheers PS Somebody buy that Jimmy Lewis CD, assuming its the Kent one its one of the greatest CDs of all time, aslo som great bargain 45's, the Entertainers etc -
I would like to use the fact I have had to tonight fly through a volcanic ash cloud as my excuse for being late, however since that only counts for one night out of 3 months and most of you know me better and know I am just hopelessly incompetent, I'll just hold my hands up and say sorry, late again, they will all be done for this weekend,
-
I defo had at least 2 of these but can't even find one, which I would definitely have kept, are they going for enough to make it worth my while turning my record room upside down to find it?

C,mon Gents, this has to be an early and late April Fool no, BV just scrapes in as a Northern record but the other one must surely be a home recording from some Spanish waiter down Soho no.......... I am shocked, no really!

Sandy Hadley - Since I Found A Love - So - Char
jocko replied to Russ Vickers's topic in Record Wants
You are becoming obsessed, there are enough fruitcakes on here without you turning into one, rather than just being grumpy! -
I heard it was on the land that time forgot just round the corner from Narnia........
-
Time for all those Mr Mr Manship vocal critics on here to eat some humble pie on here methinks.......
-
Surely the questions is WTF would you want to!!
-
Strange question mate, want to expand, he made mistakes like anyone, that old glass houses parable and all that, but don't think you can call him self serving in any way, love to know more about this one??/
-
Maybe in public..... Whats the colour of their skin got to do with it?? Dean's a bona fide soul singer to most people I know.......
-
Surely its obvious from the way she sings.........
-
And I wonder what makes people think your are grumpy Peter eh, I could never imagine. I suspect more than a littly hypocrisy from you on here, but not time to challenge, one question though, WTF has Dean Parrish to do with Jackie Trent? One is a soul singer and one sounds like SHE is gargling hot semen while trying to sign, not sure why you even think of them in the same vein. Oh and it was me that made the Jackie Trent comment. obviously just wishful thinking on my part!

And seeing all those boxes of beautiful records cascaded around your flat last week, Mr D, I think you know the answer already don't you, I have taught you well, I suspect my job with you is finished! When you coming up to play some records and chew the fat young man, give me a call next week.

Interesting question and amazed to see the quality of stuff coming out, all real soul records (if you are reading this Mr Smith, just be nice and take it in spirit intended!) I think for one real ultimate, there can only be one, and no surprise Mr Hampsey proves not only has he the ultimate taste in tank tops and cars, he is the man for this music, Darrel Banks I'm The One Who Loves You on Volt, a record of such sublime beauty, it really does move me to tears, a clich used too often IMO to but in this case it works, the juxtaposition of his stunningly beautiful voice, challenged by the jarring delivery of the heartbreakingly perfect lyrics, and the fantastical emotional and moving arrangement, any time he has stopped singing for a second you yearn for him to start again. The man pours his heart and soul into this on so many levels. I love this record almost as much as any person I have loved or anything I have ever owned (and more than most people or things in all honesty) it is truly life affirming and when I hear people calling me a soul snob or some pathetic soul police insult I put this record on and grin and agree, proud as punch! I am so proud I played this at many of the all-nighter spots I had and there was no question then of this not being an all-nighter record, a far better time and place for me in NS history. However in spirit of trying to bring something new to the table interesting no-one has mentioned Tony Borders Promise to Myself on Quinvy, one of my all time favourites, he has a bit of a different voice at times, but I like most of his later stuff and this makes me shiver and quiver in all the right places. And since I am not known for knowing when to shut up, a few other observations, Mr Reed on the button as usual with Johnny Moore, so much of his stuff was fantastic and fits, would add Garland Green to this, although he was not as consistent, and possibly the daddy of crossover, Tyrone Davis, often too common and samey but each individual record gives me something different, and yes Tighten Up should probably get the first crossover Hall of Fame achievement award! Interesting no-one has actually mentioned Ruby Andrews Just Loving You, I suspect due to the fact of it now being murdered by the local soul night, playing it on ever format other than Zodiac I suspect, this is a truly beautiful record also, and a great example of the shimmering soul so suited to the crossover clan, sometimes we loathe those things we actually love, for all the wrong reasons! And Buddy Ace Pleasing You on Paula, gets an honourable mention as one of the first of this type of record to really register in my head way back at Stafford, before the dreaded genre was even conceived, never mind born. And going forward, many records now in this vein being exposed, but three I would hope still to get their real day, and ones that have real all-nighter potential as well as the more traditional crossover camp soul night venues, Internationals - Beautiful Philosophy, surely not too slow to be played at all nighters, another one those trendy London modernists Gareth and Marco (sound like a late night Islington comedy duo) have been pushing for many years but I still think it has legs. And another one from the Hale and Pace of London, Eugene Gaspard - Holding On, maybe this has had its day as price dropping but surely enough energy in this to please the tempo terrorists and spread its self to the new mecca of all things new Kings Hall, (well that's what Mr Trouble said!) And finally, a dreaded LP track, Alice Clark - Hey Boy, not the more obvious track on the LP, more energetic and more pace, but same vocal dynamism. Okay that's it from me for now, must go back to writing report I have been pretending to do for last 20 minutes, I do love this music sometimes! Magical thread Gareth, one of the best in ages.

Okay, since you are normally the bastion of all things nice I will let you off. Seriously any view on the is it or is not Valerie, any inside info, did ask Ralph Tee to ask her but he either ignored me or didn't hear properly!!

Oh shut up and stop acting your age, grumps! I hope your obvious headache is better in the morning! Off to bed now for dreams of Onions. You could do something useful like use your NY contacts to put to bed the rumour if it was Valerie Simpson singing (and then tell her she is not soulfull)
