  1. Not everyones ignoring your comments Bob, very funny, but sadly true!
  2. SO true Joan, the start of some real mad years for me in many ways, and if only we could bottle those times, and knew just how precious they were going to be, many memories to getting barred off the radio for the show with Colin when we both swore our head off, tying Sean Gibbons nephew who danced while listening to his own music on a walkman, sabotaging the mike for Brian Rae and watching how he didn't blink or miss a beat as if nothing had happend, sheer profesionalism among a bunch of us rank amaturs, thinking Tef and Billy had shaved my head while sleeping, a 14 hour bus journey that we never wanted to end, Andy D being daft enough to play cards with the Raeburns where loser had to have a drink, they of course cheated he ended up comatose, Oh the memories, f*ck maybe nostalgia really is where it is, off to grow my ponytail again!
  3. Pretty sure it is Harry, I'll put them both up in refosoul later after my family visits. He also does a fine version of I Can't Wait on the LP as well, which is already up there. And yes Gary used to play DHB, it was one of his later ones I think and the side I bought it for many many moons ago.
  4. James Conwell on 4J I would imagine, post Stafford record and quite a strange one but it has something about it that seems to work, supposed to the Northern famous J Conwell, but I have always thought quite different vocally from his later work, haven't compared them mind...... james conwell - the trouble with girls -
  5. Carol Anderson wasn't the flip side of the Headliners was it, I remember being at his house and he played the flip of something like that and it was very good in its own right so he covered it as something totally different, didn't he also play flip side of Turbines c/u, although can't imagine that being a female vocal somehow. I could be completely wrong however as Keb turned over one or two records a second at that time!! Great article Mick, and some great insightful writing from Mr Whittington, succesfully following in the very large shoes of Stuart Cosgrove, which when you think about it there was some real quality journalism about the scene then. Mick you got the article about the Fife allnighters that Mr Cosgrove did, just want to see my name in print again.......
  6. I do have the Alton Joseph mate, but didnt have time to check if its an issue or a demo, it will probably be tomorrow before I can get my hands on it and let you know that and what condition it is in, trust that is okay, I have the second of the G-Clefs release, I Can't Stand It, gave the first one away I think, I think its a demo but not sure what condition it is in, I will let you know tomorrow if that is the one you are interested in, let me know. Cheers Jock
  7. I am pretty sure I have the Alton Joseph but think it is a demo which I am assuming is no good to you, if it is you can have it, I have given up on the Loma run and just keeping the good soul records. Do you know I don't think I have ever seen a Lucky Carmichael in my years of searching, have you had one to date?
  8. Hmm, one thing I love and hate about the internet forums in almost equal measure is that people form opinions, allegiances, and more importantly dislike of people who speak their mind, particularly when they see it is a critique of them or their world, often this colours their posts and their responses and they actually respond with that in mind often oblivious to the actual point being made and completely forgetting what was actually said, I have done it myself. This appears to be a very good example of this, not least with some of Rods sycophantic and/or psychotic fan club openly praising Rodney's obvious bootleg of my idea because it gave me and Paul a deserved doing for daring to express an opinion and have some original thought about quality, or lack of, but ignoring the original actual topics! Anyway I digress and am in danger of going of on that very type of path, so back on topic..... I generally don't engage in trading insults unless I actually know who I am talking to, so Souljer666 would be nice for you to introduce yourself as we may well know each other and be long lost soul brothers, while waiting I will answer your current points, You could but its unlikely you would get anyone to even read past page 1 of your script, unless finding a script reader in need of some anti-depressant cure, and you would be thought within the industry as a bit of a twat that either had too much money or was shagging Sofia Coppola, or just a bit of a twat. We can pontificate and postulate all we like in our post modern relatively un-informed states about the finer points of the film world, but whether we like it or not there are rules to all such things if you want to be taken seriously, and one of the major rules for a historical genre is to do your research and get it right, I didn't invent the rules, they are just there as Marty Scorsese writes and talks about endlessly, Some do break the rules, visualising in the style of Monty Python or Andre Bretton , and if you are in that space then your idea may work, however generally the rule breakers are geniuses leading the way and I suspect your idea doesn't quite fit that bill just yet. Hmm amount of knowledge is always relative to the debate, and therefore more difficult to challenge, if you mean to do with Northern and are comparing me with Rodney or people like his ex-side kick, Del Boy Withers, then I know nothing and would not claim to be in their realm of making a difference "on the scene", hopefully one day people like them will get their credit and it is something I take a great interest in doing. However, if you mean generally, well I have a reasonable general knowledge, nothing major, around Northern scene 1979-1995, not much after as it became too much like a home for the dementially challenged and I just became an occasional visitor. It would be good to actually have some debate around then as strangely its always a bit of a struggle as most people seem to only specialise in 1947-77 and then post 1996, and seem much more interested in the width of my trousers and breadth of my clap rather than the depth of my soul interest, hmm strange really isn't it. Alternatively if you mean in films then I am definitely no expert but again can hold a conversation from watching a couple of films a week, no real specialism but since the director of the film club I attend is German he always sneaks some home content and this year its been a season of Weimar republic films, the ones without subtitles were a bit of a struggle, so happy to have a debate around our view on German cinema, I am not very good at necessarily showing off with all the symbolism etc etc but I will be pretty 100% clear and concise at giving you my opinion on why it was shit, or good, although again this is all relative to the individual as I would say Mr Rimmers' comparison example was of a shit film so wouldn't really hold water for me, I like my films, like my music, like my books, to be the best there is, no matter what the subject. Not much to ask in my eyes Which brings us back nicely on topic, I said this film would be shit if it didn't get it right and since then there's been a whole slew of slavering cyber stalkers, telling me it doesn't need to have all the detail right, handclaps to Jades, right cars, right haircuts, right way of boy kissing girl, right way of shi**ing in outside bog, etc etc etc when if any of you had taken your blinkers off you would have seen I wrote was "I still can't help feeling they only added Northern into the film as they knew they had a captive audience rather than any concern for the subject matter, just a pity they didn't actually take any time to understand their audience which has always been my concern about this, the lack of respect and understanding they have and the fact its a crowd ploy rather than subject matter they love along with their behavior has me thinking this just wont work, and I say it again, its about getting the right emotions attached to the film which Paul Sadot did so successfully with his play, its not an easy thing, I think the scene and people on it deserve the respect of setting context and concept correctly, then the storyline is an independent beast and can take care of itself and that is the least we deserve" Never once have I said all the details of every last thing had to be 100% right, I realised this had limited scope for that, its main purpose was to remind me of my youth, making me smell feel and taste my early all nighter days by getting "it" right, plain and simple, which none of you have actually f*****g debated, you have all, as usual, read your own words and in your desperation to be heard debated something that has never actually been said, which brings me back nicely to my opening paragraph, Penultimate point in all this, its fair to say that in all great comic genius writing, there are always some serious points made, and both Rodders and I both made some serious points, (mines were right obviously while his were at least misguided) amongst the humour, however I suspect everyone has just gone for the money shot, as usual ignoring the actual context, Rupert Murdoch your job is done! Anyway ultimate major relevant point everyone seems to be ignoring is that I still haven't said anything about the actual film despite what my flurry of fans seem to emphatically try and allude to, and I suspect I am one of the few that has actually seen the thing, if I didn't have to waste all this time defending what I haven't said or done, maybe I could do a proper review, although based on my evidence above, you would just see what you want to read in it, so no real need, just make up my review in your heads, debate it solidly and then tell me my opinion, job done. Okay of to watch Caddyshack, not seen it for over a month.......
  9. Final apologies to my European brothers, final 5 CD's went out this morning, apologies technology problems again with other swap meant I forgot, have put a deep soul CD in as bonus (hopefully its seen that wa) so they should now be winging their way over whatever stretch of water separates us!! Entschuldigen, Ich w¼nsche viel Spaí…¸ mit dem CD' s fur dich.
  10. My first 12 are out this morning, (apology accepted Mr Steele, although lawyers letter is in the post just to make sure!) they would have been out at the weekend (as Bully can witness) but have done a bonus new music one (although appreciate not all agree they are a bonus hence why I do a "normal one") as I always do and between I-Tunes being a f****r** and my Dell Inspiron dud of a PC's cd drive finally dying I have been sweating blood and tears this week, with little time for playing on here, to get the new one done, so its done, two cd's should be falling through some letterboxes by weekend, remainder by next week. Hope there is something there. Only listened to Mr Lofthouses so far, going to save them all till I can have a weekend of immersement, hopefully next couple of weekends and then train journey to Manchester w/e 30/07 should give enough time for appraisal! **As an aside anyone having problems doing multiple copies of CD's with new tracks on them after recent I-Tunes upgrade, talking about this with Mr Hampsey at weekend and we are convinced there is now a limit of copies, and its a bas**d once the limit is hit as it seems to actually cause problems with the CD, it may have been my machine as my Dell is a f****g dud, really stay away witfrom them if you cabn
  11. Very funny Rodney, I'll give you that, but the idea is an obvious bootleg and therefore can't be taken seriously, this is an OIO site as you can surely tell from lots of the postings. You will obviously lose your subscription to the London guardian for using blatantly racist names, Please delete thims immediately and apologise profusely.,
  12. And now we go to St David Moore, newly canonised for his role as all round good guy and shepherd of those with no opinions, and his new BBC5 show Film 2011, replacing Jonathon Ross who has gone to a channel who allows opinions. Presenter "Hi Dave, welcome aboard, now we have 11 films for review this week, is there any particular one you want to single out" St David Moore " Nah, they are all just films" Presenter "Oh, okay, lets start with the new Coppola film, what do you have to say on this?" St David Moore " Its just a film" Presenter "What about the central theme of human canonisation and the central allegory of living people becoming Sainted against being knighted on earth and the heavenly/earth battle, and the central metaphor of the Queen being like Satan," St David Moore "Never got any of that pretentious opinionated pish, perpetuated by wannabees and never-will-bes, none of whom are in my gang, its just a film" Presenter "Oh okay, well which ones would you recommend to go and see then" St David Moore "All of them, they are just films and we immortals are going to live forever and therefore lets just watch anything put in front of us, they are just films" Presenter "Well maybe we could recommend, the viewers to some film forums, allow them to get some idea of what they might prefer to see first" St David Moore " You don't want to do that, these debating forums are full of people giving opinions on things and eh..... debating, they should be barred, in fact I am on to that right now using my contacts in the Ministry of Offense" Presenter "One thing can I ask, one of the films is about Northern soul and I believe you are interested in Northern Soul" St David Moore 5 minute Silence with stony stare followed by through gritted teeth " It's just a film" Presenter "Don't you think its reasonable that people who are interested in Northern Soul might want to discuss a film about something they are very interested in" St David Moore 5 minute Silence with stony stare while sharpening SaS issue bayonet followed by through gritted and grinding teeth "its just a film" Presenter sweating profusely now "Okay do you want to speak about your interest in NS" St David Moore 5 minute Silence with stony stare while fixing SaS issue bayonet to AK47 "No, if you speak about it you can't really be into it, rule no 1." Presenter now cowering behind sofa "Maybe be should just chat about you then" St David Moore now relaxing and lighting cigar with his flame thrower "Okay, I started off as assistant to personal bodyguard for Queen of Sheba......... " Screen goes blank as loud snoring of cameraman heard and the sound of the director slamming his head off the wall muttering "its just a show, its just a f***ing show"
  13. I am not sure I can agree with this, how can any tune with the line "I just got back from Scotchland" and a bagpipe solo in it ever be the worst record ever, sorry boys voting this one off. I did play it once for a laugh and people did dance for the first few bars I seem to remember, then they resorted to throwing rotten fruit, but since they did that for all my records I thought it was okay..... I also played b side of Rose Brooks as an extra record at end of Allanton, everyone just kept on ignoring me....
  14. I can't listen to it here, but if its the track of his first album its a cracker, one of the sort of tracks that were massive back in the day when the scene was more integrated, less popular and more soulful!! Although if you read on here it also didn't exist then, we were the Brigadooners of the NS obviously. Is it the album or single you bought, I didn't know a 7" existed, if it does, but have always bought LP's for stuff like that, although that is one of the 80's LP's that has always evaded me, anyone got a spare for under a tenner?
  15. Oops Karl's PM reminded me I forgot to say I haven't sent out my European brothers CD's yet, I did take them on my trip to Italy thinking they would reach you quicker from there, but forgot to send them, so will send these out on Friday with the Deep CD's, if any of you would prefer I could probably put them on YouSendIt with the artwork which would get it you quicker but will allow my learned English colleagues to spit forth the sometimes apt "Tight Scotch Jock" chants! If I don't hear from any of you, let me know and I will get them out on Friday. Cheers.
  16. No probs Mike, I won't put anything up, thanks for the notice. I will mention it to Dean and see if he wants to speak to the station boss as none if it is on their listen again. Just as well really as I managed to set the timer for the first hour only, which makes it even more crazy it was such a big file, and then cut it into 2 halfs via Audacity at lower rate and it made each half bigger than previous one, I think I need to work on the technology a bit more!!
  17. I saw her at North Sea Jazz festival about 6 years ago singing Ella Fitzgerald stuff with BBC orchestra, not my sort of stuff to be honest but thought it was worth the 15 and it certainly was, the BBC guys could obviously play but she was just amazing, a world class artist at top of her game, absolute professional and just all performed at top of the game, not much outright soul in it, although there were a few moments, but stunning from start to finish, and a very attractive, if older obviously, lady as well.
  18. Amazingly it has worked, only thing is its nearly 60mb which I seem to remember being too big to put up, I should have recorded it at lower quality, I will split it at some point and see if that helps, probably not now, I came on line an hour ago to do something and still havent got to it so need to log off here!
  19. The top side hasn't aged has it I am afraid, sounds like Vic Reeves doing George Lemons (voice that is, although anyone doing George Lemons would win with me), not as bad as his horrendous Come A Little Closer which is like Vic Reeves does Tommy Steele, truly awful, can't actually believe I own them! Anyway I digress, there are lots of really truly awful b-sides on Northern records, can't think of one at moment but will go on hunt after footie for some.
  20. I assume you are using Windows Media Player, it used to do that all the time to me, ruining lots of CD's. switched to I-Tunes with Mr Challoners help and its been perfect ever since,
  21. I am trying to record this so hopefully will put it up later as can't listen live to having the mother in law (should really be not-in-law I suppose) with us. Not had any success with software so far but fingers crossed......
  22. F**k me, I finished choosing tracks last night, another twofer, one last century, one this century (probably stretching the definition of deep on that one but know enough on the list like a bit of modern modern so thought would try some modern deep) thinking I am going to be one of the first this time for a change and from what it looks like everyone has almost done their's, love a duck, dont you lot have a life! Its building up to be a special one I think from you lot, competition is stiff, rather thans my normal spending weeks deciding listing went straight for stuff I have been listening to recently and loving, so hopefully it works,. I was going to bring them down to EMS do/Just Soul since majority seem to be on either of these gigs but realised that will give you lots of tight Scotchman opportunities so will try and post before end of week.
  23. Bunch of lazy ass MFers don't you MFing read anything MFing properly, misquoting my ass, I should put a cap in the ass of you MFers one at a time, and then MF your wifes. Ooops sorry just slipped into character there, I am planning on auditioning for Scorsese's latest Hollywood blockbuster where they want someone with lots of experience, Italian American descent, fluent Italian speaker, 6"4 and built like a woman's dream, according to some of the peoples views on here on getting it right in films I should have a chance. Okay I am off to see this film in an hour so wanted to clear up some of the crap above before I do give an honest opinion, although no doubt I will still be accused of being biased. I did quote all the people who misquoted me, Steve G, Mr Smith, P Diddy Donnelly, Gogse, Polly TP etc etc but decided against individual answers so just in interest of accuracy as I assume you all get now that matters to me, (a) I have never slagged the film, I was defending peoples rights to slag it if they decided it was no good, and assumed that most people would have the sense to realise that meant after seeing it, there seems to be lots of people saying it shouldn't be slagged as it has NS in, bollocks, its even more important then its a good film as it means something to me. (b) The quote its only a film that now keeps getting quoted at me was actually mines you numbskulls, however its now getting all sorts of misinterpretations, as was the quote its not a documentary, go on and get searching, they were made in a response to my good friend Mr Franklin some time ago. This was however saying we shouldn't judge it on it being a history, 100% agree, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't judge it on whether its a good film or not, just because we can then boast to all and sundry we were there (and I mean there at Wigan not the film so please keep up Mr Smith) most seem not to care whether the film makes us look like a bunch of numbskulls or not, I do. A shit film is a shit film no matter what the subject is, and it matters more to me this film is a good film because of its subject matter, that's a respect we not only deserve we should be demanding, not all backslapping and saying oh look it mentions Wigan, that just reduces it to the level of anniversaries in Shopping Centres, a level I will never stoop to, your choice if you do. © I didn't say the handclaps were out of time, if you don't get what I mean by watching the trailer, as at least one other person did, then either you are blinded by your desire for screen fame of "being into NS" or you really weren't there, and as for why does that matter, the same as it matters on any film on any subject, if they do not pay due respect to getting matters of subject right, then they are amateurs, I want every film I see to be as close to perfect, as it should be, just what perfect means differs depending on their subject matter. (e) I have never mentioned its impact on the scene, and never will, I genuinely don't care, it can't get any more commercialised or watered down than the majority of it now is so why would this have any impact, I suspect its exactly the opposite, that due to the scenes commercialisation and amount of people who were only ever around for a couple of years in 70's now on the scene this film has jumped on the bandwagon and used NS as a selling point, I will let you know in a few hours! Despite Mr G's strange assertion NS probably has the biggest captive audience around now, unless I am just unaware of the 10.000's of people who flock to T-Rex tribute nights in their local legion, and football hoolies has really been done to death so doubt it would have got this far with that as its central theme. Anyway in summary, as my limo to the film calls, for me its all about integrity, one of the things that matter to me in lots of things, have said before that's not to say everyone needs to include that as a value but for me its crucially important in a film and in my NS scene, if this filters through from film I will say so, but to say this film needs no integrity to its art just because it features NS really saddens me and in all honesty says more about people on the scene today than it does about any film! Although when we have people defending Russ despite open statements on here about his actions, why should it surprise me......
  24. A good film would be better, turn your statement around and ask why should a poor film get an audience just because it has Northern in it, and this is the rub, I have stuck up for this film until now but the cynical marketing team have just sickened me with it. You might be happy with a second rate product just so you can say to people I was there, I am more interested in the quality of the product than my 15 minutes of fame. Its a public piece of work you idiot, since when has any production the public arena not been up for review, WTF is so special about this. Do you just go and see a film and say it was shit but they worked hard producing a piece of shit so thats okay, you are either easily pleased or a liar, the reason I don't do lots of things such as make films is because they are beyond my talents, not everyone is quite so self aware or we wouldn't be so subject to shit films, music books etc etc. Life is too short to spend with shit things for me, and on that note I am off to Italy for some good food, great scenery and some decent football fans. At the end of the day I will pay to see this and then subject all to my views good or bad, I suspect you wont be paying to see it Pete will you!
  25. Too keen to have my say, triple post
