Gutted, I loved this duo as many people will remember me boring them over the years with this, featured on front page of my one off fanzine back in 84. He was probably not as prominent as Valerie but boy could he sing. Their concert at Birmingham a couple of years back was as good as any I have seen, Nick was as good as I have heard vocally and together they were perfections. Just gutted, RIP beautiful man

Mr Smith, something you do not remember, shock horror!! I am pretty sure Dave Withers played lots of thse at a Bernie Golding/Richard Searling Manchester Tiffanies all nighter that was fairly poorly attended, this was after Wigan but before I went to Stafford, can't remember however when the first inception of Stafford started and if Dave W was on in the early days. Hope you are both well, just had another week in Londinium of all work and no play, definitely need to hook up soon.

I think you shouldn't be so trusting and you should learn to use google more!

Bbc Radio 2 Listeners Greatest Soul Artists Of All Time
jocko replied to Godzilla's topic in All About the SOUL
To be fair Matt, these 3 are mentioned on here much more in connection with soul music than they are ever likely to be on R2. Have a dig through some of the soul programmes they have coming up, as exampled by Mikey below, a far better range of topics than most people into Northern will ever discuss. Glass houses and all that...... -
Ady fairly sure I have this on MP3 at home, can try and dig it out if no success, maybe a couple of days as have some family things over next couple of days. Let me know if you don't have anything by Thursday, send me an email to remind if not PS Belated happy birthday, can't believe someone your age can still remember your birthday....... PPS Great idea for a CD, a singer who got so much better as his career progressed, know nothing about him so even looking forward to liner details, just make them bigger these days, they are getting harder to read. PPS probably one of the few bits of vinyl I would like to still buy, so anyone got one for reasonable price let me know (my idea of reasonable price is always very low I will warn in advance). Sure I have 2 copies of demo, hoping that it wouldn't be the one side one it is!

And I will have the Bunny Sigler, the Manhattans & the Tami Lynn off you, can't PM, although since I thought you had been kidnapped by those ruff Glasweegans you live beside glad to see you are alive! PS I thought I was getting first choice of these spare LP's? PPS I thought you wanted some technology built for selling them PPPS Sloberry kisses to you and the misses, will give you a buzz and arrange for you to deliver, save the postage, you are nearly Scottish now PPPPS Thanks for selling me the Mike James Kirkland, and no I won't tell Val, I promise

Oh and I would cover up your fur with a more nuetral coloured jacket, Green will get you bought a pint in some pubs, but may require a sharp exit from others, go for nice nuetral brown, always recommended when we cross over to the dark side.

The most obvious thing to visit is the train station, nice enough interior, although you may have to step over a few of the clientelle, and their bottle of Bucky, who I can now translate what they will be saying as "any chaenge for the puggy big man, goan yersel", then you can just step on to a train to Edinburgh and see Buddah's, or any one of his made up mates, chosen city. Given that detailed description I can only assume the P stands for Peacock, if so how the devil are you old man, long long time no see. Hope all is good in your world. Top bloke. And if it is you Mr P do not spoil my perfect racial stereotyping by trying to suggest I used to spend most of weekends over in Glesgae due to it being much preferable to the stuffy and posh student filled land that is Edinburg on an evening out, my lawyer would be forced to deal with any such scurrilous accusations.

If i could put the b-side of Eugene Gaspard on this I would, its called on and on!!! Love it, probably the nicest debate, and first on here for ages about this with Mr Franklin realising, unlike I ever do, that the softly softly approach sometimes works best and a few killer words, along with Mr G's say it all. I sorta agree with Winnie now, except I see no relation between the two completely differing views, they are completely differing scenes, differing values etc etc. It is a case of you either get it or you don't for me. My previous gripe was that one would destroy the other, however not looking like that, in all honesty looking from afar these days it looks more likely the multitude of nights is still the problem for both. And glad to see Mr D sometimes, gets it, then doesn't, then does...... just need to get this book written Iain and then you will remember why so many people still get it, and it will make you a a few bob on the side, as I suspect many of us will buy it right away. Funniest bit, however is Matt, Phil etc.. having a go at Bob A who probably gets the OVO thing massively more than any of us, but he gets it for differing reasons and for arguably far more valid reasons than us. Sorry guys you are definitiely shooting out of the pomposity pistol (best quote ever on here, if sadly misguided in its original use) here. Of course what we do is f***ing wierd crazy and frankly ridiculous, thats partly why we love it, lets not kid ourselves. So lets not get precious about it, to those of us serious about it its everything, but to everyone else, as someone said about their wife, its bordering on insanity. But's it our insanity, and its a marvelous insanity...... Anyway wasn't going to say anything on this, just wanted to share a picture I seen in a very prominent place in London last week, I off course followed the arrow around the corner, where there was similar arrow pointing back the way, I spent a couple of hours walking between the arrows just in case there was a hidden doorway, there wasn't. The potential find gave me a much bigger hard on than any find probably would, is that insane or perfectly normal.......

I think I disagree that Cee Lo is just pop, I think he is a good, if not great soul artist, but Billy Ocean is just a pop artist to me, although I have been told he has done some decent soul stuff in past, I am yet to hear it. I certainly don't think he has a particularly strong voice in soul terms. I get continually frustrated when people hold up artists trying to sound like old soul as representative of new soul, the problem with retro acts is they are competing with the old music, which is almost 100% better. I buy lots of new soul music, or did until recently, (and I get the fact that there is a reasonable argument saying that is a bit of an oxymoron) but I do think there is lots of good new soul music, much better than these acts mentioned that wouldn't even register. I get frustrated at Iain D I suppose as he in a fortunate position where he hears lots of it, but fairly openly admits most of it is not to his taste. Therefore to hold Cee Lo, (who remember I do like and did buy, as in pay for, his music), is held as the next great thing, when in some ways he is just a tribute act, is both surprising and frustrating for me. I do appreciate it is an opinion on this one however, not a fact! To hold him up as Northern however for me is just lazy, crazy and says more about Northern scene currently than anything, however its another sign of that SWON! I also know Iain is used to my voiciferous debating, so it was aimed at him.

Can there be anyone other than this, nver played enough, then pulled out by the master Butch. Tricky Dicky's Dee Dee Gartrell c/u, probably the greatest NS record ever, and for all those numptys that say Butch won't be missed, this sort of pull out show why if he does pack in the scene is fu***ed in any progressive scene!
-
It doesn't absolutely, The point I am making is you judge them on potential sales rather than on artistic value, because it is your business, Sometimes, like the recent EMS debate that is more important to you than any artistic merit in actual soul terms. And they have good voices, but certainly not great, there are hundreds of less commercial artists that piss all over them when it comes to pure talent. Something I still care about. I am recognising it is your job, and saying if I was lucky enough to have your career, then I may not be as value driven as I am about music. But I don't, therefore I can judge purely on value judgement, and Cee-Lo is interesting, enough for me to buy the CD, but the fact you think it is the best release of this century highlights why the music business has never been, and never will be, the best judge of our music. So Ian, I am very chilled now, in the end its all about opinions, but you will never stop me caring about the music I love,

A proper genuis, that transcended scenes, rightly so. He made history, what more can you say. RIP xxxx

Some fantastic records, and I think most of my favourites already covered, other than than the first, I think, and in many ways the greatest Buddy Ace - Pleasing You (Paula) Despite the Rupert Murdoch style reporting by people who were not there, this was the beginning, and still the greatest.......

[quote name='Ian Dewhirst' timestamp='1310856784' post='1606654' It's funny that you brought up Billy Ocean in a Cee-Lo Green thread though, because they have very similar parallels. Billy Ocean started his career with a multi-racial pop band called Scorched Earth who made a record called "On The Run" which I heard in the early 70's and I loved the lead vocalist's voice at the time. In fact, here's a clip:- He's a lovely guy. I bumped into him in a McDonalds in Shaftesbury Avenue in the 80's and we had a great conversation over big macs. I have a lot of respect for him. Ian D

So who are your favourite soul acts, outside the Northern world, then, and what are your favourite tracks? And do you think April Hill or Fred Hammond is the best contemporary artist, or who do you prefer?
-
Oh and thanks for the tips on the CD's. just bought both! Look some screaming good music.

I Have None is currently swilling round on my I-Phone, when then f***er works, it is a decent record but just dies if I remember rightly, it promise lots but just stops short of going from good to great. Can throw it up here and will actually listen to it again, to ensure I am not talking loudly and saying nothing, again...

Bloody hell, never heard of this, sounds interesting, sound clip anyone?

Spot on this time Benji, lucky to get one under £200, have only ever seen Karl's for sale I think in last 4 or 5 years. Does anyone know what Karl got for his?

I suspect everyone thought your title to this was just a statement with no text inside Mr B...... Its when you start wet dreaming about the ones you have, thats when you know your collection is getting there. (So I am told by Simon anyway....)
