  1. I love it, a record with Bobby Womack and Lulu (which is not very good no matter what sort of genius Bobby W is my eyes and what you try to tell yourself about the sh*t that gets played) and its Lulu not Bobby that gets talked about...... Amazing.
  2. If there was a like whole Thread button would press it. Fascinating stuff and I suspect the areas that funded many finds over the years. Obviously the John M story is now well known, but anyone got more tales of finds in distributors warehouses (or is that another thread).
  3. You forgot to tell everyone that you are better than them and have better taste, and are the only one only in it for the music unlike the rest of the world. Which sort of contradicts statement above for me, as do most of your posts! You should just ask Mike if there is a repeat button that you can set once a week or something at ridiculous o'clock to repeat your post, it would save you putting the bottle down would it not.......
  4. Yes it is on the same name LP on Mhyrr. A gospel LP and a mighty fine track that I was just playing other week. Think old Tricky Dicky played it fairly early on. Not seen it on 45 but who knows these days.....
  5. You beat me to it, I was about to say I made a short and sweet, if unloved, DJ career out them. I have been raiding what I called my unloved pile over last year or so and found 3 copies of Ojays To Prove I Love You (I gave these away as laughing that anyone could charge more than a fiver), Sir Guy (rare one), Friday Saturday Sunday, rarer copy, and a few other similar Miami things that came out of Soul Bowl soul packs. Most of them actually sounded good now but I figured if they had been lying unplayed for more than 20 years I could live without them... changed days for me
  6. It only offends my sensibility and my sense of decorum that anyone suggesting it is required associates themself with my beloved, or once beloved, cool as cucumber scene. It is like people watching a Gok Wan (k) programme and thinking they understand Fashion rather than they watching genocide by stretch pants, its another way of ritual humiliation. I repeat, if you were on my scene a poll isn't going to tell you anything you need to know, or even want to know, and that is proven by the ridiculous LP not LP, carver not carver not bootleg, which Al Williams label, 2011 modern scene vs Northern scene values, or any of the other ridiculous comparisons. Debate quality of music, why music played in 90% of venues is staler than Londoners bread at moment (so I am told), or the quality of some much praised dj's are playing records that have been played more than any played oldie just because they are rare, why very few people that were movers and shakers from 1980 to 1995 rate todays scenes, anything other than this peurile poo poo (trying hard not to swear Mods) Its a non question other than for people who want to say its alright now, my early days I thought it was important on here, but years have told me there is no one size fits all answer so what would a poll say other than there are 33 versions of a scene that was once united (at least in musical direction) and beautiful. These days are mostly gone with some brave soldiers fighting their cause, but they just get on with it dont they. Anyone thought of asking Andy D, or Butch, (the 2 top DJ's out there despite what some deluded duds think), what they think? Its a bit like asking some soldier in Lybia, would they not prefer chocolate bullets. Stop it now, before I lapse back into drinking gin 24 hours of the day rather than 22. Please. Its certainly not emotive now, the recent deaths of Nick Ashford and Gil Scott Heron were genuinely emotive in musical terms, this question is just people trying to re-write history to suit themselves. its like an annoying fly that needs swatted. Do what you believe in, or want to do. It wont change my perception, ever. No because it doesn't matter. People who care, and interestingly you seem to have been having a sly dig at some people who I consider care lately, don't care about the answer of any poll. They just carry on doing what they have always done. Why people like you think there is some need to merge the two beasts, I don't know. Its almost bordering on genetic modification, producing a hybrid of a rutting Stag and a Hyena. Its just wrong! Oh **** it, pass the Hendricks nurse.
  7. You missed the general point, who gives a F*** about what others think, do what you think is right. Its becoming almost laughable the need to justify the alternative scenes existance, Personally if you care, you care, and you know where to go and who to avoid. No poll needed for that. People who don't care are on a different scene and planet from the one I was on, and I assume others still fighting to keep alive. No poll needed to tell you that, you can smell a non believer from miles away. No poll needed for that. If people need a poll to justify what they do, they should be a politician. Otherwise close this thread before some other half baked nonsense on how to run a scene that has been doing fine its own rights for 40 years by people who get it is thought up. I really do despair.
  8. Ouch! Thats an interesting track list, some big numbers to take on. The Free Love track is one I always thought you could do really interesting things as its such a builder, breaks in that could be great. But equally its a huge challenge as it is one of the greatest Philly Dancers ever. Have to be honest and say and would love to see some of the more spacey Philly things, like the Billy Paul track you have, and things like his East, in the hands of someone like DJ Spinna, who is a massive soul fan and always does interesting work. However suspect me and a few other old heads would buy it, probably not pay its way.And probably not for this thread. Apologies Geese, I suspect this is not really the discussion you were after. Some of the tracks I feel are a bit too obvious Iain but generally sounds great and as usual I will buy it before I listen to it as it always feels better owning it! Will look forward to it
  9. My unreserved apologies then, It looked like a sound file from my desktop it is only now I can see the video clip. My mistake and my bad. Just so used to seeing people completely ignore that rule I suppose I assumed the worst! And I don't think I have responded to anything you have said in a long time, have I? My rudeness reflects my misunderstanding, I am generally equally rude to anyone taking the piss, as I say in this case I was wrong and have apologised.
  10. I was just about to say google Ian Dewhirst and/or DJ Dimitri and you we ould get all you need to know about re-edits as well as a picture of a big grin probably! I can't imagine why anyone would play any of these at a nighter, they are all about big sound systems and a dj who can play the system. They are suffering a bit overkill at the few modern do's I have been to, done well they can be a masterpiece, alla Mr Moulton, but they can also just be sloppy. Some of the big house MAW/Todd Terry did some classics just to play out, but they got overdone in the House world, I suspect we are getting close to that situation with the soul stuff. Anyone care for an Azuli Disco Mix......

(insert swearword of your choice) me, 10 pages of drivel and the 2 people who hit it on the head are: (a) Bob A, with his played out comment. Surely really the crux of this argument and the ethos many of us follow is summed up in that one sentence. An amazingly sharp insight considering he has never been on the scene, is from a different continent/culture and I suspect views us as bunch of fu**ed up cooks that at least share his obsession with vinyl (well at least only some do as this thread proves) and therefore are a little safer than the normal lunatics on the internet, and we are certainly a lot funnier, although mostly unintentionally. (b) Pete Smith, as much as it almost gives me physical pain to agree with Peter publicly, particularly on this subject given his normal delight in being contrary. But if you think about it, his it depends answer is now the only one, with the myriad of scenes out there and the myriad of personalities (at least 2 per person I suspect) there really is no one size fits all answer now, as much as us "soul police" would love it to be otherwise. Runners up in the spot on category to these 2 were Mr McCabes comment about you should only need to look at DJ's names to know, blindingly obvious if you think about it and 100% correct for the sort of people I associate with, but to be honest seems to pass most people by. And finally Cliffords comment, that I would slightly change to be if you need to ask you shouldn't be (insert swearword of your choice) djing (and that includes both sides of the argument) or running nights or doing anything related. Spot on as always Mr Steele. I love the raw passion that Russ and others have for this, I sometimes need an extra shot of Gin to add to the three in my coffee at bedtime wondering why I don't have that anymore, but the thing that always sends me to sleep soundly at night is knowing that those that try and justify anything other than what Russ and cohorts admirably defend, have never been on the same scene as I was! Fact. In many ways for me this argument needs to be put to be bed and the debate should be on tired old biggies being regurgitated and people playing an hour of massive and expensive tunes that have been played constantly for years. As someone says, go to the right venues discussion won't be about format it will be about quality, and about the dj's balls to play certain things, and then start to challenge this whole rare is good/bad and focus on whether its good and differnt, surely that is the utopia. Some of the playlists I have seen on here, all original and rare but really show as much originality as a Bob Monkhouse joke, and are often more painful. Okay back to my bed and rehibernate, just waiting on the stair lift.
  14. Am I going mad, I used to have both versions and gave one away as I thought they were identical? Can't even remember which one I kept, I can guess if one is rarer! I am assuming from here one is vocal and one is female? It must have been one of my gin injecting phases as I still swear my copies were identical!
  15. Of course the correct answer to this is there is none, and the best stuff is Modern Music with a Modern feel, although I suspect I am in a minority here! Some of the best examples are on here already, but also some of the worst (Ffin Frank Popp, the most appropriate name ever!), I can't see the youtube clips so apologies if on here already but would say Eli Reed is one of the most authentic old school acts out there, Noel McKoy deserves a mention for his performance at Cleggy, being the strongest vocal by far with some retro material and dig a bit further back for some of James Hunter material, although try before you buy. Enjoy, and throw in a bit of Broken Beat just for something quite old now, but newer than above! :-))
  16. Hadrian, I think I love you. The thought of unissued Darrow's 70's stuff is the best news for long time, and that is saying something given your employers current prolific streak. I will commit the heinous crime here of saying his 70's is far superior, in general soul music terms, to his 60's so that is fantastic. Although, will obviously buy both. I didn't see the original one, but if I had would say don't rely on Modern scene for sales on this, maybe 70's/Crossover guys, and if so a bit of vinyl seems to always get them moist, so a free 7" of the unissued track with the CD would be ideal, but I suspect not exactly cost effective. I do suspect your Londoners in that category of fans will buy the odd CD too, get yourself down to Filthy/Majestic soul as suspect any market research done there will be a good guide and a decent night out to boot. Is the other "modern" track an issued track or unissued. Boy am I salivating.
  17. It was reasonably but only as it seemed to be in vogue for a while, suspect a want up here would get it, or do like I do with LP's and buy them with dodgy covers, amazing how cheap these go.

You have taken your eye of the ball a little I think mate, Asda's have been selling soul T-Shirts for years and every market in the North of England has had Keep The Faith t-shirts and Northern Soul coasters for a number of years, surely you have been at Prestatyn weekender at least once in last decade and seen the Northen Soul knickers etc. Last time this scene was underground Shane Meadows was not even conceiving his first short. So you cannot really blame this film for any part in the commercialisation of anything surely. And using the analogy of Shane Meadows, what is exactly the difference here, why don't you assume this film will have the same integrity as you obviously think, and I agree, his filmaking has. If the film is telling the story correctly why does that equal commercialisation, I think our beautiful thing needs recorded properly and using it as a centerpiece for a drama, done well works for me. To be honest you are starting to contradict yourself. I don't know why you keep going on about the dancers and the scene, they are performers training for a role, probably dreaming of being famous because of this film, is that a major crime for ambitous kids. I wonder if BalletDancerSource.Co had huge derogotary threads about Natalie Portman over last couple of years or not, debating was she good for the future of the scene or not. Personally whether they are into "it" or not is incidental in this process for me, the fact that some of them are actually going to soul nights is great from the point of improving the view for us old gits, but of little other importance to me. One thing I will say on this, is I went along to one of their dance classes because I was in London and some of them got it, particularly one lad, and really got it as much as many people I see on the scene(s) the few times I have gone out in recent days. Whether he was just a great actor or really did is surely incidental for someone being trained to add authenticity to a film! It would be good if you did this intro Mike asked, and gave some details of your Northern perspective and exactly why you got into and where etc., might be easier for people to understand your point of view and why this is so important to you. Trust me it is important to me too, I would love a great film to be made including this subject. As I said before, lets not forget Elaine is someone very talented at what she does, and is an active member of scene and has a personal passion for it as much as you and I , and in fact more than I do these days, so has a head start surely.

Ken you can read as well as I can mate, and the website I think outlines the film pretty well and gives me a good flavour on what it is about, read that and you will be as well informed as I am. My response for above was to answer the previous posters comment about it having no story, I would say based on the lines from the website I have taken, it certainly does appear to have a story in it.

Not sure what you mean here, the lines below are a direct lift from the link Mike put up and would suggest a fairly obvious narrative structure, I think it makes sense of the choice of name also and explains it is not a one dimensional name. Not sure what you mean about Casino either, lots of films are about specific points in time, as was Quadrophenia, and thats a good example, I was very anti-mod at that time but loved the film, as it was about people like me! I think most film makers make films because they have a story to tell and this one looks exactly that,the major difficutly about projects like this is we are a bunch of moaning b****rds that expect everything to be of Scorsese like perfection and it to be exactly as we remember it one specifically special night in June 1973, which is quite a challenge really. I do agree it should be judged on how good a film it is, which covers a multitude of sins, not on its documentary relevance, they are completely different scenarios. You do seem to have a bee in your bonnet on this one mate, bringing you out of lurking, but all I can say, same as I said when Soulboy was first mentioned, surely a good film about our time can't be a bad thing can it? ******************************************************************************************************************************************************************** The film will tell the tale of two Northern boys whose worlds are changed forever when they discover black American soul music. Rejecting their small town existence working the production line, they dream of going to America in search of the super-rare records that will help them to become the best DJ's on the British soul scene.

  25. While I completely agree with your statement re SoulBoy, I am fairly confident this won't be as bad. Everyone seems to think that film got flack for its NS connections but in reality it was poorly written, poorly researched and poorly put together, which was its downfall, not its trouser length etc. Elaine has been on scene all her life and therefore, is doing this from the inside literally, so that surely gives it a head start on any others, and that surely means it can't be called just cashing in. While I know little on that side of things, I suspect very few people make a specialist film to get rich, given the time energy and personal cost in just getting something like this off the ground. From what I can see she is dedicated to making a film about something she loves, a pretty good start I would have thought. I am not sure about your first comment either, and the connection, it is a film not an all nighter, so surely it should be judged on how well it does things like any other films, so if it stirs our emotions and memories, and makes us feel like we are back in the time, that means it is a good film. I think like all films it can only be a celluloid representation, so therefore detail attention etc do matter, and I think from what you see here Elaine is investing heavily in that on top of her own lifelong involvement. Like I said about SoulBoy when it was at this stage, it will be great to have a film that represents that time well and shows just how exciting it was. SoulBoy didn't but am very hopefull this will.
