Cmon Mrs Mitchell you have been listening to too much gossip in the Vic and letting it cloud your judgement I am afraid. You seem obsessed with crossover, have you been abused by it in the past? Because crossover and beyond (actually more likely to be Y2K soul and house today if we want to be totally accurate) is my tool of choice when on the wheels of steel that doesn't automatically mean I want to hear that at an allnighter, or would dream of playing it an allnighter that I would go to. For nigh on 30 years I have gone to non Northern venues as well as Northern, and have chosen them based on their ability to play the sort of soul music I want to hear that night. For crossover etc I know where to go, normally soul nights or day time venues, and they satisfy my needs, along with 000's of others. When I go to allnighters I want to hear good all nighter music, so we agree on this, the difference is its not tempo that dictates a good all nighter record for me, its that undefinable oomph that some records have. Butch gets it, Guy and Keb did when they dj'd as do many other DJ's that no longer DJ or DJ only intermittently. It shouldn't be about tempo but about quality for me. And I never said playing a good uptempo set was easy, just easier than playing a more varied tempo set without impacting on the feel of all nighter, which I think we actually agree on too if you think about. Focusing only on tempo always means the line between good and bad gets crossed more than it should, which to be fair history tends to validate!. Why does it have to be either Crossover or Up Tempo (I am ignoring you slipping in the mid there, too late to turn back now), there is a whole lot of soul music ( and a few barely soul records but that still work) in between crossover and crass stompers that are great to dance to, and thankfully for me that's always been the case when I have been around, sadly I suspect most of today's crowd are too impatient for any subtleties, and too many dj's to scared to take a hit now and then. And to keep on topic if this is typical of todays stormers its not good enough for me, just differing times and differing priorities I suppose, and for that reason, again I, and to be fair lots more like me, are out. I have only been to the Wilton once in last couple of years so not fair for me comment, I don't think you are alone in your thoughts around that, but agree with Nev etc not really best place or best way to present constructive criticism the guys have asked for though

If you listen right at the start he says roll the tape I'm Going To Kill it, sadly don't have the CD but pretty sure this is direct lift, Rob Marriot used to play this very occassionaly along with Marvin's great version of Sweet Thing. Now would I rather dance to this or Cluck Cluck! Tangent but if anyone has a spare of this CD I am your man!

Ahh Mrs Stopcock, I thought my tempo terrorist jibe would have you swooping swiftly from your roost to keyboard. Problem is if you go for danceability only, we end up back in the bad old days of soul content being of a secondary concern. I don't think either side of the 45 has strong enough vocals to interest me, and the novelty value of this chorus makes it more Black Lace than Black Power for me, so for that reason I am out, I would off course argue is its surely easier to play a spot with all uptempo stuff, particularly in current day crowds, hence things like this becoming popular, than actually mix it up with something of similar tempo of the b-side (but a better record) of this and have no impact on all nighter. Lots of DJ's used to be able to do it, DJ's that can't be arsed now coincidentally, and lots more people seemed to go to progressive all nighters then than do now. Obviously there are two sides to every theory. Can't disagree with that young man, its easier for me to blame the music though than admit that I am old and apathetic, and just a miserable bas**rd I don't think it's just kids now, on the Marvin Gaye unreleased CD, I think on his version of Its Not Unusual, he says he is going to kill it. So possibly a Black American saying from back in the day? Bob over to you to educate us as usual.

Stax/volt The Best Of The Companies Xover And Northern Soul Releases
jocko replied to Mick Sway's topic in Look At Your Box
Remember when Time is Right had about 6 of the LP's on shelves, similar but not the same,, IMO, backing as Jackie Beavers, but great song in its own right. Its Carla Thomas - I Play For Keeps And the master, blighted by similarity to Marvin, rather than appreciated in his own right, by the masses but not the Soul Boys of the North in the early 70's, I believe. So many on this label of this ilk, criminally ignored. Its JJ Barnes Snowflakes I really do hate You Tube! Cant get the embed code to work -
Have you found the Resolve yet? I think Joe has answered it, let me know. Cheers Joe, I am really poor on British 45's knowledge, but really really poor on British LP's. other than what I have bought in junk shops over the years tended to buy US LP's as well as 45's, not really sure why in the LP world though. Argentinian sounds interesting if anyone has one spare??? Got a Johnnie Taylor Soul Singer, surely some of the others are much easier than that? No-one getting fed up of those big LP's taking up too much space, cmon you know you want to.

Soundcloud - A Great Temporary Alternative To Refosoul?
jocko replied to Premium Stuff's topic in All About the SOUL
Richard I assume you can do these so there is no download possible, which was always difficult on DivShare? Otherwise does it not run the similar legal gauntlet around file sharing, probably worth running this by Mike (apologies if you aready have). I sympathise with Mike in this, it seems to be a minefield out there, with companies trying to ensure, understandably in some ways, everything raises a fee (sounds like Banking in the future!) Maybe Mr D can help in this front as well with his industry knowledge. Apologies if Mike has already covered all this, I miss Refosoul a lot as well, have lost the way in recording my vinyl since it has gone,, but as I say I do symathise with Mike and hopefully we al can in this front. -
Thats why I asked Dave, was pretty sure I had heard it at least Rotherham, and I was thinking Minshull but Gary makes more sense (in many ways. ) Mr Roberts, nice to see you sharing some stories rather than fighting the populous, some of the best stories of the old days are going to come from the likes of you, Iain (don't tell him I am being nice about him), Mr Manship, Rick Scott, rather than just tales of the all-nighters, as interesting as these can be, it fills in blanks of how things evolved and people behind the scenes. More of this nice Mr Roberts please. However if you are tipping Bobby Vee, better stick to the tales of the old days. :D (That is a joke not a slagfest, hence smileys, so don't go getting all defensive, compliments above are genuine)

Now that Kevin has been satisfied, which is normally the job of McCain Oven Chips, if anyone has the LP for sale at the lower end of the wise old fox Mr Suttons price range, I have a space on the shelves for it., I may even consider swapping the 45 in deal if thats your bag, although you should obviously buy Steve's 45 first if you are looking for this version, manners and all that!

Tip top Nev, and yes that is much more my sort of sound, both then and now. Probably missing that little bit to give it enough oomph for playing out, but a much better side. Ta very much all, now I have some housework to do so need to stop mucking about here with you retrobates, although do expect all my wants to be fulfilled on my return...
-
To be honest, you are just waiting on that line coming out! You have better taste than this one David surely. Anyway, get yourself over to the Wants thread, sure you will have some of those LP's I am after just lying around gathering dust. No new SJ product for me to buy in near future? Thanks for that mate, it is the one I remember, although not as bad as I thought it was and certainly not as unplayabe as I remember it, however the chorus totally kills it for me personally. This has been around since mid 80's but didn't really take off then despite Pete's pushing. Is the other side not quite good or is that another dementia led rose tinted glasses memory? Definitely one for the tempo terrorists though......
-
Is this the record that has the mad chorus, repeating Chick Chick or something like that?? If so Pete Lawson was always trying to push this back in Stafford days, or maybe just later, it has a good other side if I remember rightly but can't imagine the chick chick side working, shows what I know nowadays. Is there a soundfile anywhere out there, couldn't find it on You Tube but the search wasn't exactly specific to music!!
-
That puts one rumour to bed then Iain, in 80's there was a persistant rumour that Roy Agee had been an unissued track that SS had got his hands on and then sold it as a released item on SoulTown, effectively making all copies boots. While it sounded possible based on his reputation the bit that didn't add up is him only having done a few, didn't seem to be worthwhile, As an aside when did Ray Agee start getting plays then? (Maybe another thread...)

A few more wanted, I appreciate some of these are on various online sites currently but after US copies (preferably) from UK people, not always available combination. And of course I am tight so not wanting to pay US postage, who says you can't have it all. However I will obviously consider UK copies or dealing with our US brethern if no success locally. And of course I prefer dealing with you lovely chaps on here. Okay details are, Mel & Tim - Good Guys Only Win In The Movies (Bamboo) Sam & Dave - Sam & Dave (Roulette) think its also on Major Minor so may take that, assuming it was also a 60's release. (Presumptious strike out) Ollie & Nightingales - Ollie & Nightingales (Stax) Sam & Dave - Double Dynamite (Stax) Johnnie Taylor - Wanted One Soul Singer (Stax) Johnnie Taylor - The Philosophy Continues (Stax) Johnnie Taylor - Rare Stamps (Stax) Carla Thomas - The Queen Alone (Stax) Carla Thomas - Comfort Me (Stax) Original copies only, no repress Cheers and a season's wishes and all that to anyone daft enough to buy into current commercial climate......
-
Not sure I have ever seen that on US 7" mate, only have the UK and LP cut? Not been looking for it that hard mind, would be interested to know if it exists. I can compare the LP cut to the 7 and see if any different if thats any good for you?

Where did I say I have no interest in either? Being glad not to be involved any more is hardly the same as not being interested in watching, from behind a screen, what I percieve as a terminal decline in my once beloved scene, and getting incredibly excited that more people are interested in debating PW or Chris Evans than talking about the quality of recent Kent releases** woud suggest I am almost sick with excitement at this thread surely. I am flattered by your constant attention to my detail, but should probably tell you that my therapist would say stalking a narcissist is akin to blindly headbutting a masochist, so your not doing a very good job of getting me stop my attentions seeking ways are you... Here's a thought, you could challenge the opinions that I dare to throw up much to your obvious disgust. Not sure if I am your Jonathan the woodcutter or you are my Dennis Nilsen, maybe. I should ask my therapist ** And yes I know I am equally guilty, but watch this space for the new chilled out soul talking only Jocko in 2012 -
I know you hadn't mate, and didn't mean to imply that. I had seen the other posts, and that's my central point, I think the negatives and positives will be so minimal to the bit of the scene you are on that it's irrelevant; I think the youngsters that get into any sort of progressive scene will do so through already existing channels. Some may drift along from the oldies scene, as seems to be happening now but I would be amazed if it has any sort of real impact. My other point, hence the mention of the film, is every time we talk about the film it gets on to the scene, and people get very defensive. I just think the film deserves debated on its own merits. The more I hear about it, the more I get excited about it, I really have high hopes much same as I did as the original Wigan play, and that turned out even better than hoped. I don't get out enough to worry about new people, but if I did I would hope that the film would only be one bit of their interest, otherwise they wont stick, so yes you may get a small initial blip but I suspect it wont hit too high on the Richter scale, I do get the PW comments, but it's a necessary evil in many ways on this, and that's why I think it is important to debate it about the film and not his part of the scene. To be fair to him, when Elaine meet him first time, she said he was very humble and genuinely interested in things of today, and certainly not the big I am or as if he thought he still knew it all. As per my spat on the Chris Evans thread I am always mystified by peoples concern on celebrities views on the current scene, unless they are out on a Saturday they are irrelevant, which means I am probably shooting my self in the foot a little here!! I do think there is a whole lot of irony in some of the loudest voices against Pete (and not you obviously) having been off scene for about 20-30 years and now railing him for not been around....... I am alright mate, living a bit quietly, partly work and partly focusing on new music a little at moment again, although not much going on in the contemporary soul scene these days. Think my travelling days are over, although a little spurt over festive season just for old times sake. I hope you are also okay, and next pint on you and we can talk about our football teams current woes, much more interesting than this soul rubbish,
-
Oh relevant comment, I can't get radio 2 on at moment, is it online or just on normal radio? Whatever that is,
-
Jeez mate don't say that too loud. Thatcher's not dead yet, and sure she still has a list of outstanding grudges and some sway with the security forces. If you hear a knock at the door tomorrow don't answer, thell them you became a civil servant years ago.....

Jesus Christ, debate has everything to do with it, its a f**cking forum and I am debating some statements and opinions that you threw at me for no reason. You could try debating what I said since I responsed to you, but no as usual its easier to throw insults rather than debate what you actually started, and as usual not answer any of the questions challenging your statements, nothing like ignoring facts to throw names. In all seriousness do you want to actually say which one of my reality statements offend you so much, I am still scratching my head. FFS nothing should surprise me on here, but daily it does. And which part of my attitude don't you like, the bit that takes none of this too seriously and takes the piss out of some of the rubbish spouted, or the bit that has the nerve to challenge when people dare to put something I disagree on, on a debating forum? I would say I will change, but so far you don't really present any compelling reasons to shame me into conciliatory retreat do you. My attitude and me are perfectly happy together at the moment, thank you very much Actually lets ignore this and lets leave you to your prejudices, sure we can both live with it. This became boring and pointless for everyone else long ago. -

I know Yorkshire men are famous for having few words, as well as being tight, but try making the words you do use worthwhile Want to explain why any of my statements are egotistical. Oh and while you are about spot the sarcastic one. F**cking typical of debate on here these days, don't like the response, but don't answer the points throw an insult and some toys out of the pram. I repeat, thank f**k I have nothing to do with current scene, -

s I call my reality people who don't listen to celebrities or radio 2 shows to gain a deeper understanding of the soul scene, I call reality people who can debate records without worrying if Chris Evans knows a NS record or not. I call reality a pop dj not caring, or being expected to care about what we talk about or what we care about. My extended reality is people who spend time on the scene worrying about the scene, not if Ann Diamond went to Wigan once or not. Obviously reality is no longer a friend of mine, I find it frustrating and just a shame almost all debate on here is about similar things rather than actually anything remotely related to soul. Feel free for that all to offend you for some strange f**cking reason. And off course I expect people to agree with me all the time, otherwise they would be wrong. And before Micheal rightly chastises me, this is a dig a people and not site, but yes I do know the answer, watch this space.
