What a lot of pretentious tosh Steven. How long were you actually on the original Northern scene before being reborn! Its an integral part of the Northern scene, like it or lump it. If you don't get it you don't get Northern. Simples. And I don't agree with the rare bit either, Guy H was a master of the 2 week cover up, Kittens & Jan Bradley anyone? Got some play out of them then uncovered them and watched all of us scamper to Black Grape/Soul Bowl etc in the hope of getting them rather than give Guy the £50 for his now uncovered monster. Its a scene thing, not a music thing.

The Steady Stream Of Dare I Say 'funky' Newies In The Sale Section
jocko replied to Mal C's topic in Look At Your Box
I think you are right for mainstream Northern scene here, but I suspect there is big enough crowd globally that collect soul dance music, a bit like the Boogie scene that seems to be kept alive without any actual scene attached to it, just collectors who pay money for in demand 12"'s. I think that this style has been under the radar for some time with collectors and does it not also cross over a little with styles such as 80's boogie. I think its for people who like dancing to Black Music generally, long may it continue. I think tastes are changing in younger collectors with not the same barriers in genres and styles, which obviously suits my musical ears. However I thought Mal's point was more about the hype being attached to records being sold and being hyped up beyond their quality and value, which is definitely happening at moment. And I suspect the new boys Mal is referring to are the sceneless funk boys who smell a ready made, not very well informed market, among the soul boys. Predatory people! Lilke all fads, some people are more interested in being in on it, rather than the quality of the product, always beena Northern thing has it not. Although to be fair DJ's have always paid above the odds for a new sound, and now there are so many DJ's that 200/300 quid for a total unknown is fairly common. its fairly obvious some dealers use this, particularly if they have a name for this new invention (kinda ironic since JB been funky since 196?) and its fairly obvious some people attach the label to stuff just to sell. I am not complaining, sold about 8 records for nearly a grand last year that had been lying in my unloved box. I was on the goodfoot, huh! -
Slimharpo Aka John Evans Has Passed Away Today Address Added
jocko replied to JOE TORQUAY's topic in All About the SOUL
Only knew him on here but he seemed to be one of the original boys, with interesting views. RIP Jock. -
It was actually reviewed in Black Echoes as a new release, in the Jazz section if I remember rightly. Although that wasn't noticed till years later and it was Everything Man that was reviewed, so I suspect it was known outside our insular world. Tricky Dicky always seemed to have a "couple" of things like this to sell whilst playing, Colin/Pete Doonan bouoght a couple of his cover ups at Wigan, only for them to appear on mass on Soul Bowl later (Larry Houston and this being the two I remember)

R.i.p. Marvin Junior - The Mighty Mighty Dells
jocko commented on Sean Hampsey's article in News Archives
The King is Dead. Always Together, one of their finest moments and the perfect epitaph. So Sad. Will play every album over the course of the next week with a fine Malt and savour life, and soul music epitomised. RIP xxx -
Sadly can't make it. Hopefully he has Peace of Mind, and is whereever he wants to be now. Goodbye to a top man, send him off well, Jock xxx

Just came in to see this, really sad. Off to record room for an Arctic session RIP Jock xx

Can I take from above you were known as Beaver on the much missed, for sheer hilarity, Funk Forum?
-
Sorry just seen this, off course you can. Pretty sure I have one that has both sides and all the writers/producers listed as well if you would like that. I also did a follow up for subsequent issues that reviewed all the Northern sides with pictures! Before the days of scanner so they are stuck on paper that I could send, unfortunately my scanner is knackered. ] Let me know if any good to you.

Just seen this on FB, deserves some exposure, not sure how much availability but if you are into Soul then surely this is a must. I really need a job in London, so much stuff like this only makes it here, heres hoping it will get wider exposure soon, and one way to help that I assume is make sure this is sold out, http://www.sundance-london.com/event/muscle-shoals I am assuming Ady and Tony will be there on behalf of Kent, publicising their greatest feat in getting the Fame masters released, and will no doubt buy all SS members a pint to apologise for their oversight in not publicising this...... added by site A CELEBRATION OF MUSCLE SHOALS AT CINEWORLD AND INDIGO2, THE O2 IN LONDON The screening of the documentary Muscle Shoals followed by an intimate music event A Celebration of Muscle Shoals with Gregg Allman and John Paul White of The Civil Wars Film Screening at Cineworld, 6.00pm. Music Event at indigO2 8.30pm Doors Open Saturday 27 April 2013 at 8:30 PM Starts Saturday 27 April 2013 at 9:00 PM

You need to go back to your nightclass on pychoanlysis I am afraid, I didn't have a problem with your comment as shown by my response I would have thought. Its all about context and I thought Manus' hypocrisy deserved comment. And remember they are Pete Lawsons words not mines, although nothing I didn't also say at that time. Again its all about context! Anyway fancy doing a joint project on history of fanzines (soul ones, I know even less about others) it would be fun, a story well worth telling and would be interested to see how many times we fell out and what over......

A present from that nice man Gilly many years ago to me, one night at Stafford I think. Was always a stalwart of my early deep tapes. Just fantastic, and if we bring in Truth then we need to raise that to Smoke Im So Lonely, LP version. Fantastic music, and all my early discoveries on the deep journey, thanks to people like Dave M, Eddie Hubbard, Barney etc etc
-
Yes, that was Tommo from Leicester, sadly now gone, had my differences with him towards the end but another character that made the scene back then and knew his music as well as weekend recreation activities. His first tape to me was legendary, way ahead of his time. A book about the people of that era is really required..........

Given the propoganda that is propogated on the websites you are happy to promote that is actually hilarous. Good comedy writes itself, again. Pete will be furiously carving out a two tablet reponse to that as we speak. Ridiculing you, It was the way of world back then. It was a good way!
-
Jeez, how many points can you miss in one go, try reading the words. And here is a clue, as is often said to me, its not all about you.... Anyway think thats enough about us, I was tempted to make a sarky comment about your last sentence but good comedy writes itself to quote one of that famous Sheffield bard Franklin's pearl of wisdom. Ady, have I told you that I loved you lately?

Wee 3 has the massive b side that you have been missing, and I think I know where one is also.....

Eugene Smiley And The Essence Of Love - Yes It's You
jocko replied to Jaco's topic in Look At Your Box
I had this down as c/u at Clifton Hall. Poke? -
Yes I am or otherwise it would ruin my point. Cmon Benji you don't normally live up to your countrys stereotypes don't go all literall on me. I suspect Ady would say more than 1 in 10 get some money from them, but over to him. I did think of putting in caveat that artist may actually be a lawyer for a multi national company like Universal, but it didn't change the point, just reduced the sympathy!
-
You can't be having a go at me as you have gone off on a complete tangent, not unusual I appreciate but… My point was purely about justification of modern day bootlegs against legally sanctioned release methods that are available, Trying yet again to link buying second hand records to artists paydays is tediously stupid and just another flavour of our beloved OVO argument. And wrong. And as for new releases I buy about 20 a month. Thank you.
-
Okay, so here is how the conversation goes. Ady C here, hi unknown artist who wrote a very obscure record a very long time ago, how are you. I am fine Mr C, (scratching his head and trying desperately to remember the record) struggling to feed my self and keep a roof over my head in these trying times, USA don't like poor folk. Yes, well hopefully I can help, if you allow me to include your record on one of my company CD's we can sell a few and you get you some money, it won't make you rich but it will hopefully help and let you see people love your music. We will try our very best for you. That sounds good to me, and yes it would be good to know my work was appreciated. And get paid for it. Some months later. Ady C here again, bad news I am afraid, someone has bootlegged your record and as a result its not right time to release it. Oh, when will be right time. Difficult to say really, as it fitted in with the overall theme of CD, not sure if we will get enough sales for a part 2. Oh, so I won't get paid. Fraid not. Does this bootlegger get paid. Yes, probably more than you would have for CD royalties. Artist silently scratches his head and the silence continues, Ady C, feeling the disappointment says but I have been told to tell you that lots of people somewhere are playing an illegal copy rather than a CD of your record to 30 of their mates in a dilapadated hall in the middle of nowhere so you are appreciated. Artists sobs and hangs up. Meanwhile Freddy Fuckwit in that far away hall plays the record, singing happily, counts the door money he makes from his night and plans his next 3 new bootleg purchases from the supply to order service that is one click away……..

Don't encourage him, I was going to pretend I had never heard it before!
-
Yes and I can recite every word of the ones that never made it to print, you better bring ear plugs to Bamberg....

And just to be clear, the article that has the quotes above was written by Pete Lawson not me. Although it was 120% supported by me and I helped shape it. I had similar ones ready for version 2. The idea behind that Fanzine was to give a voice to people of that opinion, and to try and stop the scene drifting off into boring territory. So maybe its more Aldous Huxley than George Orwell! It did have the mantra if you don't like it F**k off printed somewhere. Obviously got lost in the edit. One of Pete's finer sayings. It was shaped from lots of morning after discussions and record bar rants on how the progressive scene didn't get the respect it deserved! And although It does have similarities to the current day arguments it was very different times scene wise in other ways on reflection. The progressive thing was much more together. It was shaped over a year of rants, full of youthful exuberance and spleen venting when it seemed the scene was the only thing that mattered. Which to be honest it did for many people I was around. Now it probably seems bit daft, and something kids would do, hence why it probably is a you had to be there thing,. I loved it, and still do. If you want the posh slightly sanitised version you need to get Chalky to take a month of and load up Blackbeat, assuming Mr G would provide permission...

You had to be wrong to be called a c**t in those days. I cant remember that ever applying. Its another you had to be around to understand it cliche I am afraid.
