Only went in once, and got chased right out! It was a quiet night and the rest of the lads had just gone straight there. I got chased outm then got picked up by PC Plod, who proceeded to tell me I was obviously a nice boy, based on my job, who should tell on any bad lads in the Casino trying to sell me bad things, having picked me off from my 2 other mates, the posse who had chased me out now circled me on my own, so I asked for a lift to the Casino to get away from the bad boys, the other PC plod not so nice, drove me about 200 yards up the road and then said I could run the rest, I did. And thankfully arrived to find good old Scots boys life Fox and his mates there to send the possee back to think again! I love this typical SS thread, now all about Wigan and peoples personal habits, when for me Barrys brilliant original post was all about the people at tail end of Casino, the young guns who stuck with it through tough times, many now liking all sorts of Black dance music, a new breed and a new way of thinking. I think that was the crux of my question, as I say I wondered if there were any non gospel groups and when that started. Interesting in Doo Wop being post rock and roll here, what specifically do you mean here, not challenging it, but there are a number of different depictions of what and when rock and roll was. I suppose it is the foetus, but with a view to answering the holy grail question of what specific day in the calendar did soul music breathe its first. I have always taken the very simplistic linear view of Gospel-Doo-Wop-Soul with Blues and Jazz running concurrently and providing influences to differing levels at differing stages, but this looks like there might have been something between Gospel and Doo-Wop, or maybe something independent? It would be interesting to understand some of the biggest names of the 40’s, in addition to Andy's names, and obviously was anything before Andy's dates for a Black audience. And if their background was purely gospel or other things also. Happy to do some independent research if people throw up some names. Andy/Robb K/John any views? Sure some of this will be in books I have, but it would be good to at least add the outer ring of the jigsaw in here

Didn't some of the oldies shows start in 60's, thought I had read somewhere that Yvonne Baker recorded after revised success on that circuit, which I assume was regional. I suppose I was meaning did any major act in 60's, have heritage back to then, Clyde McPhatter and Sonny Til you have name, although was Sonny Til not still in Orioles for most of 60's, did they have any relevance to the revival circuit then, or did they stay as stars right through. I cannot remember when Jackie Wilson started, and obviously Ray Charles, so yes there are some. Will skim read some of the books tonight and come back with names. I suppose the bigger question I had not thought of, is when did the Doo Wop style start, i.e is there a clear connection from groups of 40's to 50's, which there obviously is, and how far did it go back. Was it all gospel groups originated? I appreciate this is definitely in books, but it may of interest to some. Looks like Andy has done some research that may be worth sharing, and Robb lived through most of it so would be good to bring it together on here. Again any CD's to recommend of the 40's stuff?

Fascinating stuff, and despite your paranoia on my intentions, I like your writing, always have since the mags, and appreciate your research. It would be good if you credited your sources each time though, something I have a thing about Its just your dodgy uninformed quips about Northern soul people I'm not so keen on. Just thought I would clear that up in case you thought I was being sarcastic in below. I do like to talk about music, just don;t do it enough on here. Are there any good books on the 40's stuff? I have a few on the 50's groups and some on the Gospel/Blues histories, but none that I can think link through 40's (or earlier) to 60's vocal groups, I do have a couple of general academic tomes on the history of the whole Black music thing but haven't been inspired to start them as they look a bit intense. It would be interesting to know if any of the singers from 40's made it through to 60's and had any reasonable success in soul days, I suspect age would be against them. And any recommendations of CD's of the 40's stuff. Not just directed at John obviously and not necessarrily expecting answers to all, but the kind of thing that would be interesting to tie together so something to read on all this, even liner notes on CD's would be good. And happy to report back once I have read anything.

I think there is definitely a lot more joining just to sell, and maybe the site needs to look at that as to whether people take advantage and a bit of chancing it in there, methinks the minimum posts vs charging them some sites use might be beneficial. Or as someone else said limiting how many sale posts they can do in a period of time. However I suspect the admin and legal implications and the fact lots of these people might not be that interested in anything other than a free service would need to be considered. The impact of traffic on this may also be a consideration for you guys Methinks its a damned if you do and if you dont sort of scenario. Lots of people seem to favour selling on here though which is a good sign, although lots of people, myself included, moan about people who try and undercut the lowest of low prices. So some sort of electric shock aligned to their pm that can work out when they are chancing it would be a good addition, if not asking a little too much.....

Someone on FB, a Sean Cosgrove, has now said Kebs house was near the incident and they are trying to trace his whereabouts via the official agencies. Lots of mixed messages and just passing on to ensure as accurate as possible. Fingers crossed for the bald one. I am still confident we will see his grinning face soon asking whats up my lovely! Does noone know his agent for his recent tour, he was with a German fella at some point I thought. There was a message on FB from Guy Hennigan from Cambodia saying Keb's house was on the other side from the problems and should be okay? A few people have been on FB trying to get a hold of him with no response as yet, including his brother Gordon. He was on a tour and just left the UK a couple of weeks ago, on his way to Japan via Germany I thought, getting to Japan on 03/11 I seem to remember So no news on him but some updates and hopefully he is just off line as he does sometimes. When he does turn up, smiling and wondering what the fuss was, someone slap him and tell him to cut his FB pages down so you can at least have one area to get a hold. Bald f**ker that he is

I do sort of agree with bits in red, and yes on final sentence you are right, Mr Fryer is again trying to show how thick these Norvern Sole boys are, and get something to his benefit, but I disagree with your middle sentence. If you are on the real deal, Northern/Rare/Nighter scene, and people are playing the reissues, you are going to the wrong dos. I just don't see how the reissue impacts on that scene nowadays, as it it is just as easy to get an MP3 and off it goes.

Why vinyl instead of CD? I always think niavely the bar people you talk about would just play CD's as well as vinyl? I am also being selfish here as would prefer to buy CD rather than vinyl reissue these days, (shock horror, but just cannot get a decent vinyl player for the car), however, from what I have heard from guys at another label the CD'S just dont sell. Is that because these bar guys will only play vinyl? I sort of get that in the pretend Northern scene these days, but seems strange in your side of the world. Although it seems strange, since most are on the trendy side of things rather than any bigger scene, especially not the nighter scene, I suppose I can see it as bit of a gimmick to their student pals, although a little senseless to me and lots of style over substance, I just would like it legal and would still dance to it, the 3.5 times I go out a year. Out of interest, are artists generally pleased with what they get out of something like this? Do you it based on sales or do they still expect an advance and leave you scampering for your returns?

The only post that matters, the one that talks about the music. Everyone else talks about Shellac, vinyl, gimp masks, basements in LA, etc etc etc but Matt talks about the sublime beauty of the record. Correctly. It cant be described any more accurately. You know Sean I used to think but have reappraised some of his early 70's stuff and I actually think the boy can sing better than most, I used to agree with you but headphones rather than speakers in the corner of a noisy room have changed my mind.

I got one for just under a £100 I think, which was twice what I wanted to pay but less than half what i had seen it for, having given my first one away to a very very good friend nearly 30 years ago, and in that 30 years of looking I have never seen it under 3 figures. Pre-ebay I found it almost impossible, They do turn up but they still used to attract significant bids, although haven't looked this year since finding mines. Which I think came up on here bizarrely. Its like anything, how much do you want it, I am now getting to the stage there are only about another 12 on wants list of LPs that have been there for 30 years, and think now may need to loosen my purse strings. Rare LP's appear to be getting dearer at moment.

Isn't this track the Modern Scene's Frank Wilson/Gene Toomes/Rita and the Tiara's (delete as applicable depending on what scene you represent!)? I thought there were a couple of decent other tracks on the CD, long time since I listened to it admittedly.
