Sean Gibbon's newphew at a Yarmouth, Sean brought him along as he was going to be the next big DJ, but he seemed to prefer his own music. He left him in radio room with a number of us, that I think included Ozz and a few others. As we were leaving he had somehow got him self tangled in some wires and was tied to a chair. I assume someone did free him at some point.......

Problem of OAP's trying to understand the yoof concepts, they always get it wrong. And even if the OP was right in his assumption, you would need a bundle of teenagers there to explain to the crowd, average age 67.5, how to work these new fangled things (probably Sony Walkman's)!

I put this on Refo Soul when I was in betwwen jobs, so that's 6 years ago. So you should just stick to jazz tips Mr S :-))) Funny enough I got this LP out off FOPP but it seems scarce, brother of Joey Negro's producer, a big gospel collector, Howard Livingstone I think, offered lots of money for this when I found it.

Thanks for that, now to compare with our feathered friend below :-)) Like to articulate a bit more mate, it looks like this is the key differentiatior, I have a price that some are coming closer to but pretty keen not to get stuffed as I suspect these have been done as exact look a likes. Was this ever proved to be real, at one point it was claimed as a graphic design mock up but pretty sure our ardent Scandinavian collectors have proved otherwise? And talking about ardent Scandinavian collectors, :-) I though you might have seen the reissue directly? They do seem to be mostly in the UK interestingly so am doubly suspicious. No idea re the Boot/Legit but don't think I have seen any appear in the normal shop stores so I am suspicous, someone on net somewhere did say it was only a 500 run so somebody oviously is aware of origin, just buggered if I can remember who said it! Dare I ask how legit these are Mr F? I assume its not P-Vine still is it? I don't suppose you ever come across any of the old P-Vine catalouges there do you, and if so is there enough pictures to work out a discography :-)

Okay Phil, you have gone right up to a 30bob DJ, getting nearer a fiver one, (Butch is a 100 obviously, Kitch Andy etc are tenner just to give you a target to aim for). I think I now see why Joan etc think so highly of you, just a pity you used to play rounders for a living, always brings you down a bit in a Scots estimaate..............

F**k me, how did I miss this. Inspirational. Lets hoist up Adrian's wall higher, kick Croasdell in the cockneys, set a burning wall at Watford and if any of those Amercian Negros come to claim our music, lynch them! Statement of the year on here, where do I sign up to the BN(NS)P march to freedom, I assume the insignia will be decks with signs no Southerners, No Europeans, No Dogs. Not quite as catchy but the best I can do. And as I hear the strains of AWB starting their biggest hit (neither Northern English or Northern Soul) I was and have made no comment on the Future, I was merely commenting on the misrepresentation of my experience of Northern Soul, which you are allowed not to like but you cannot change. So put away your whitewash brush, toys back from the edge, and have a think about what you are saying. Can I ask, do you actually go to allnighters?

Obviously a new reissue of this 1981 classic, assume its the first repro. Has anyone seen one and can they tell the differences between them easily. Few cheaper ones finally appearing but a bit suspicious for obvious reasons.

Which describes all the venues of the past I describe, other than the limitation by decade, so not sure your point The returnees and mass influx of ten bob DJ's, myself included to be fair in the DJ bit, killed the progression, or tasteful progression, slowly but painfully apart from the small but beautifully formed resistance that continues now. Although it appears to shrink monthly. Sadly. Not sure why, that's a more interesting debate, but these venues obviously weren't strong enough for a whole load of reasons, I moved off, but that's all fact often airbrushed out like a vogue front page special. Anyway too much about the past rather than future, mines is a gin soaked armchair so no idea what is norverns fate. Just a fond memory now.

It depends on what you mean by right. Lifeline in UK and 3 I mentioned in Europe are pretty bang on for forward thinking, the sort of venues people like you would have went when you were young I bet. However tastes and desires change, hence my 100% spot in comment on mid 90s that seems to have offended your sensitive soul.

Glad to see you are back for some more factless posting. I assume you haven't been to either Bamberg or Hamburg, or Barcelona. Hope the w ind gets better soon.
-
Actually that's the ghost of Northern Soul past, Clifton Hall, Stafford Sheffield etc etc. Its only since the return of the farting grandfathers in mid 90's its gone to a series of monosyllabic scenes if you really think about it Some people like Dave Thorley Butch etc have always had the ethos you set out. Just nobody here wants to listen,

Whats this about an LP, any details?

Are we there yet?

Surely its worth mentioning Keith Minshull, that well known R&B dj, playing that fantastic R&B record, Mel Wynn, 34 years ago. Ah his story is never History and all that. Sorry Rod, sure one more won't matter.

Has The Bottom Fallen Out Of Cheaper Record Sales?
jocko replied to John Moffatt's topic in Look At Your Box
Oh I apologies, your gripes comment and your zzz's that appeared when I was the only one griping were just massive coincidences, of course. So what were you referring to exactly then? Looks for raising glasses smiley. -

And what is that gripe Nev? I suspect you have completely missed my point in your mad rush to defend yourself. Read it again and tell me where I am wrong. -

But it's always been there, Keb Colin Law, Dean' Ion in 80's, back to Sam Gary R at start of my time, it's always been the case. Even Guy H despite an immense collection would move things around in his playboy to get something new. So not sure why you bring the age thing in or think its a new thing. Major difference now, from what I read (I know), these hot boxers now are chasing other DJ's records to DJ where the guys above were chasing new things. Therefore price is going to be completely impacted, and not exponentially, therefore lots of hot boxers get well burned. It's always been a risk, just lots more people without the oven gloves of knowledge get scalded. Although again none of this is my point, the minute you judge a record by its value BEFORE its quality, as so many seem to now, you deserve all you get. And for the sensitive souls defending themselves, why don't you point out where I am wrong? -

I think you are trying to dispel the rumour that Germans have no sense of humour again Beni, and I am normally on your side. So if a record becomes in demand goes up from 10 to 150 it suddenly gets better? How much is the Dells Make Sure again? Would I not buy it because its pish or would I not buy it because I have it, or would I not buy it because its not cool to dj with. I would, and have bought about 5 copies of that, just for the sheer pleasure of listening to it before giving it away, to people who I know like soul music. How many great records on Chess under a tenner and they are all pish? No, they are common and not that in demand if all you want to buy for is to dj, which despite the pleas is what 99% of todays buyers are doing. Listening through their arse and paying through their wallet. When it comes to pure musical pleasure, from what I read, the majority don't have a f**ing clue so are buying spots, they deserve to pay too much, cheapies are better left to people who buy a record for how it sounds to them rather than what they think someone else might think of it. People who buy for pure pleasure, as rare as that obviously is for lots of people. The "scene" and those people deserve each other right now, More gin doctor, I did try and stay away, but should have known my 12 step programme wouldn't get through a thread like this.- 216 comments

Whats The Difference Between A Good Dj And A Great Dj?
jocko replied to Andy Jackson's topic in All About the SOUL
A hot box vs a cool box. -
It was obviously used as a descriptive term in the 50's in certain Jazz circles, but I assume the question is aimed at start of it describing the more generically accepted secular music style of the 60's?
-
And what bit of that makes it not a soul record? From what I read lots of soul stars sung in bars, didn't make them bar singers or singing bar music to my knowledge.
-
What do you mean by bar music?

Okay the three books I have, all unread are Ever reliable Mr Pruter, but looks like Chicago only, as you would expect https://www.amazon.co.uk/Doowop-Chicago-Scene-Music-American/dp/0252065069/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1385760732&sr=8-3&keywords=robert+pruter the much praised Mr Shaw https://www.amazon.co.uk/Honkers-Shouters-Golden-Years-Rhythm/dp/0020617402/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1385760802&sr=8-1&keywords=arnold+shaw+honkers and the one I think I will start with https://www.amazon.co.uk/Group-Harmony-Black-Urban-Rhythm-ebook/dp/B00E1XZJTE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1385760866&sr=8-1&keywords=goosman+group+harmony Not heard of this chap, can only imagine someone has recommended it to me, it starts of promising with the Blurb of telling the story of the Orioles and myriad other vocal groups in the post war era. I have another couple of non music projects that are sitting crying out for attention, but will try and summarise anything I read.

Sorry Dave, forgot about this. Need to concentrate on this music side, really fascinating stuff and dead interesting so far, off to check some of the recommendations tonight. And thanks for clarification of the R&R bit, on thinking about it I think my timelines for DooWoop are out of sync, due to my zero knowledge, hence my rock and roll question, but I agree with your later statement the rock and roll connection is equally fascinating. I am going to dig out some of my unread books on this and report back, also if anyone is familiar with the wider Ace catalogue would be interesting if any relevant CD’s are around, must have a browse of my Ace catalogue, although it’s a bit out of date, Maybe Santa Ady will have a surprise for me in his stocking at 100 club Xmas party!
