  1. If you were there, then they should be lost years, otherwise you were just playing at it......
  2. Are you saying that is or it isn't. Confused of Edinburgh.
  3. Have you been on the scene long enough to comment young man :-) I agree, it was a very good review, I disagreed on a couple of points, e.g I thought there were some really decent acting performances, particularly one of the leads, who is fairly new to acting. But it's fairly obvious Gary has really thought about it and judged it based on how he views films, which is surely the most important way to judge it. While nowhere as old as Penny, although she obviously looks much younger, :-), I agree the dancehall scene and scenes outside were fantastic, and had me totally choked with memories. I think it's also worth mentioning the filming, lots of done at night obviously and I though it caught the atmosphere of the night brilliantly, with some great shots. It's great to see it judged on how it tells the lads story as to me in many ways it's their story, their journey with Northern at heart of it, not the other way round as it's sometimes discussed. Pleased to see it looks like coming together as a smash!
  4. I assume it's common knowledge he DJ's in woman's underwear under his vintage Levi's. He told me in Bamberg he always buys one size too small as it keeps him focussed.
  5. All of them apart from Smokies to be honest, I only went there once. Bilston was much later, and one of the first of the new breed of Scottish niters, possibly 88ish, Butch dj'd right after me at that, and danced to at least 2 of my records, although sure he told me later he had itchy jeans on after and was just on his way over to tell me to get off. Aberdeen was huge hall, with the seats behind the stage, and that and Dundee were early on in my nighter days, so a bit more scary, lots of tops off and big eyes. And funny speaking people. Exciting days. Keep think it needs written up, And off course the Daddy of them all Clouds, still my most exciting nighter as it was my first. More later, including the planes on the ceiling at Clouds and one being left on the floor one time? I didn't imagine it did I Sure we might know each other based on the journey, although your user name just makes me feel bloated.
  6. Never heard of him.
  7. Young, good looking, stylish and newly discovering sex, drugs (allegedly) and soul. Bast@@ds. F@@k em.
  8. Jahiem says you are getting some thug action for forgetting him, and Bashiri Asad says you must be dreaming if you don't count him!
  9. It was Dave Evison, it was a Sunday after Wigan, and I had thrown loads of money at my folks to go out, which they normally did, having heard drugs were featured. They seen me so desperate to get rid they stayed in to see what it was all about, and they thought it was so poor it was obviously nothing like real life, and a shame they added drugs to as it gave us a bad name. I agreed wholeheartedly for the first time in my teenage years with my parents! Even old Mr Evison hid his head for a few weeks after!
  10. Thought this might be of interest to some, given her Dreamgirls book success on screen on theatre it might not be as much show and tell as the original book, but hopefull will follow the book rather than the showbiz interpretations. I have seen this lady before and she can certainly sing. Tap to view this Soul Source News/Article in full
  11. Thought this might be of interest to some, given her Dreamgirls book success on screen on theatre it might not be as much show and tell as the original book, but hopefull will follow the book rather than the showbiz interpretations. I have seen this lady before and she can certainly sing. Sounds a great afternoon out for anyone that can make it I assume it is based on the book as below, which is one of the best biographies I have read. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreamgirl:_My_Life_As_a_Supreme added by site Join us for a very special afternoon of music and conversation with Mary Wilson, a founding member of one of the most successful female singing groups in recording history — The Supremes. SInce the 1960s, Mary Wilson and The Supremes have brought the sound of Motown into the homes of millions across the globe and simultaneously advanced civil rights by breaking down barriers in the entertainment industry. While growing up in Detroit’s Brewster Projects, Mary’s love for singing blossomed when she befriended Florence Ballard, Betty McGlown and Diana Ross at age 13. Four decades and 40 albums later, what once started as a dream has exceeded beyond Wilson’s wildest imagination. Wilson has written a best-selling autobiography, performed on stage and screen, lectured and toured the world, and continues to be looked up to as a singer who set the standard for females in the recording industry. A special event presented by The Embassy of the United States of America website link/reference http://www.tricycle.co.uk/current-programme-pages/theatre/theatre-programme-main/an-afternoon-with-mary-wilson-of-the-supremes/ The Tricycle Theatre 269 Kilburn High Road, London NW6 7JR Nearest tube: Kilburn (Jubilee Line) Nearest overground: Brondesbury Box office: 020 7328 1000 tel: 020 7372 6611 fax: 020 7328 0795 email: info@tricycle.co.uk ouch looks like may be sold out already as the site says Mary Wilson of the Supremes - US Embassy event, 24 February 2014, 15:00 We are sorry but this event has sold out.
  12. Alison, that’s why everyone loves you. Smily, happy and very insightful, as you always are in person. Above in a nutshell. It probably makes you difficult to read for any boyfriend trying to figure out if he is trouble, but that’s another thread This is funny on a number of levels, the main one being though a bunch of people watching a media manipulated mass produced pish tv programme aimed at teenagers and then moaning because a group of teenagers are making them uncool. Hilarous. It also is a poke in the eye for all those guys slagging the young lass that did the video, she is obviously a young kid bursting with creativity, matching that with her weekend passion and its got her a bit of notice, likely short term admittedly, but possibly a kick start to some creative career or even just a few years of ligging and having fun. What 16/17/18 year old wouldn't. And the fact we don't get it, is the point. If we did get what kids are doing with media, it will be because they have left it behind I would imagine. The world is changing, mass media is a part of it, and if nothing else the fact this girl has shared a stage with Nile Rodgers and Pharell Williams shows the power of the modern media. The fact we don't get it, is, I repeat, the point. I just hope she isn't on here in 20 years, reading the 250 obituaries a day about the old boys, moaning about her life being ruined because Pharelll never called, grab the chance with both hands I say. As for the impact on the scene, interesting to hear a few returnees on here moaning about it, another layer of hypocrisy. Is this going to have loads of people running to all nighters, proclaiming I love it. No. Is it going to see the already teeming tea dances, populated by OAPs proclaiming KTF etc etc, talking about the twice they went to Wigan in 1975 before going home to their late night Cocoa at 12.30am. Probably. If you are on any level of the progressive scene why would you care on that. It may slightly impact on Cleethorpes/Prestatyn due to it being easier to take extra tena lady and english breakfast tea hampers to weekenders, but again who cares. The more important question for all the moaners, will it make you get of your ass and get along to Lifeline this Saturday, support one of the proper progressive all nighters left, last of a dying breed, and keep some level of underground/progressive scene alive? And if not why not? Because you aren't Djing maybe, or you have your own night to run/plan. That’s the problem. If people started looking closer to home as to why the real scene is almost dead, then answers are there, or be like me and admit you don't have it left in you anymore! But stop blaming a runaway train that will eventually run out of steam, thats just sidetracking the issue. Maybe this would matter more if I was 20 something and going out every weekend, but I like to think if I was I wouldn't even have heard of the Brits, and certainly wouldn’t be watching it. I would be lying on the couch, still nursing a weekend hangover from having been out, or playing my new records, or running off to phone box to make arrangements for the weekend. I wouldn't be watching the Brits. But that was 30 years ago. Times have changed. Then again I always thought I was cool because of what I was into, until someone much wiser than me then said, if you have to say out loud you are cool, you very rarely are! I now just drink cool gin! PS As usual in the Northern Soul world, noone actually notices the music. Old Pharrell can actually sing. And I watched it on You Tube this morning before some smart alec comments
  13. Am I right in saying that the black vinyl was much harder at the time this first appeared was much harder than this fine royal specimin? Have I said I love this record before. In case not,I do, a lot, more than almost anything! Its life affirming.
  14. And what makes you draw the conclusion that they have handled it poorly? Surely at this time the film production teams only responsibility is to get this film out, and they appear to be doing everything to keep this in the public eye and to get it out. This I would imagine is part of that process. Do you not think any potential distributors involved, if any are on board, would want a say in this showing, this is a commercial enterprise that needs to go through various commercial phases. Why would the BBC be remotely interested in who was involved in the team and who gets invited, surely for commercial radio they are always going to go down the way of an open ballot on their web site, getting more people registered and their details and potentially new listeners on board is normally the marketing reason for such a partnership. Cant you see the advantage of the publicity of being linked to a BBC festival? As I say, this is a commercial enterprise and dying a death due to loyalty to the “hard working people” isn’t really in anyone’s interest is it. Don’t you think the time to involve the hard working people is when they have a deal, a release date and some potential of getting some of their investment back. There is too much sentimentality over this, I am biased but I think Elaine to date has done a great job in keeping some form of community over this film, I maybe biased but I can’t get away from the fact people have to realise it’s a commercial venture that has had significant funding, and the film game has rules that have to be adhered to, to allow completion. That’s life. And maybe instead of worrying about what people on here would get into hysterics about, these hard working people should drop you as their spokesman, you seem to be adopting the hardline rather than conciliatory approach, and contact the production company directly. Isn’t that what people would do in the real world?
  15. Equally is it correct to criticise the marketing without actually asking for the facts? Its a two way street and some people seem to want to criticise regardless. Its an industry that most of us know nothing about, much like my beloved Investment Banking that I love to blame for all, but because its about Northern lots of people just seem to assume and throw bricks based on their assumptions, FB last I looked was almost funny in its misconceptions by some people, just making things up.
  16. I am drained from fighting the English separatists over the border in the politics section. I definitely start my Bonny Prince Jocko like exile from there next week! But I fancy Tuscany more than France!
  17. Snap, sort of!
  18. From what I can gather, that was just down to the whole Distribution process, I seem to remember there being issues initially with the initial distributors. I know on an earlier discussion Elaine was, understandably, keen to ensure the film got the widest distribution possible. From what I can see it is not that unusual for films, particularly first films, to struggle to get out and often take years, Film distibution and finance seems to be a world of its own and everything seems to favour established companies. It seems to be a very tough world to get a foothold in, and lots of the post production process is completely unseen to us outside the industry I suspect. I think its fair to say that the guys are as keen to get the film out as soon as they can, just like lots of people, although not all obviously, are too see it.
  19. And you actually see yourself as the arbiter of good taste do you? And you call me strange. Your 30 seconds of fame and your 2.5 fans have warped your sense of reality.
  20. So this thread is for some reason making me turn to dark songs, menacing songs, and this one sounds like its set at the back door of hell, with the swirling devils flying around your head, whispering go on, do it one time, you know she is right. When he hits the chorus, his tone makes you visualise the junk vanishing into the veins, swooshing through the blood, the backing singers now the devils celebrating taking another soul And over that a man who sings like an angel. Its a bit of a paradox this soul music sometimes......
  21. Do you even know whose vocals are on that? You are really quite funny, in a strange sort of way.
  22. Definitely a Sam Dees written tune. And lovely it is too, from a fine LP. There is also a good version of it on the Queen in Waiting's Life LP
  23. Oooomph. My No 1 favourite recorded performance of all time. Just aural pain. The lyrics so sharp they cut your veins open in sympathy. When she spits, To turn your sick soul inside out, she dies every performance. Definition of heartbreaking. Addiction explained for anyone who wants to understand. Gil wrote it from experience but she claims it, she sings it, she lives it, she died it. I love Esther Phillips unconditionally, and this performance should be played to anyone who wants to know what soul really is. I am off. Too much for a mid week night
  24. Another one that just makes my mood as black as the night in the Outer Hebrides, dark, despairing and little joy, apart from the sheer beauty in the performance when someone so troubled can just pour his whole worried world out in a song. Sheer talent One of the greatest artists ever, really moved up into my top 3 this last 10 years, all of his songs seem to tell you of his troubles, with closer inspection of the lyrics hinting at the demons that sadly destroyed him. Whilst his genius shines through like a remote lighthouse in almost everything he did. Just magnificent and only recently did I read the story that this is not a political song but was written for Donny by someone that saw his tortured soul. Just a magnificent feat to take this from someone and make it so your own. Amazingly the most heart breaking part is not when he is singing its when the trumpet comes in at around 2 minutes, and the sadness just seems to seep out ever part of the speakers. Then comes Donny to take the 12 pieces of your heart and turn them into 30. My second favourite recorded performance of all time. Buy his latest anthology, and turn the lights off and lie down. F***ng life changing.
  25. It wasn't Bobby that wrote it, it was Jim Ford who also wrote So Many Sides of You and others he recorded. I think it took on a lot more meaning when his brother died shortly after it being recorded Its still one of my biggest tear jerkers, I just love it, makes me feel very sad which sad songs, perversely, rarely do. This one just kills me. We were obviously typing at same time Mr Link. A monumental performance by the No 1 man in my world. Just seen him sing it live again the other week, and he struggled with this one sadly, having to be helped out, but he had one full chorus of it where he just soared for about 40 seconds and it just broke my heart. A bigger kick to the senses than 100% pure Russian vodka.
