  1. Ohh yesss it can!!!
  2. I was just saying to Andy D last week that I was most surprised to see Tim was a good dancer and had a great style???? (In a rythmic but non acrobatic/spinning stylee!!). Oh dear maybe that says more about my dancing style than anything!! Cheers Jock
  3. Hmm was going to ask same question, assume too late! Cheers Jock
  4. I have been trying all day to get time to answer Koogas post as my blood boiled more each time I read it, thankfully Rich has saved me time as he has stated much of my thoughts perfectly, only thing thats sad is if I am right Kooga is not one of old school, he doesnt even have that excuse. It is an unbelievable genrefied arrogant disrespectful post from a disrespecftul southern twat, timing of this post is even more bizarre as one of the newest members, Barry May, along with others like Robin Salter introduced many of us to this genre of soul music, in late 80's in a modern room of a predominately oldies all nighter (Bradford) and I thank Barry eternally for that. Yes it also introduced me to House on a wider scale, but would argue that much of that,(the non cheesy stuff) is relevant to the wider black music scene in as much as jazz has been. I am assuming when this was happening you were still contemplating your deep funk sheep path, obviously this was before your now status of soul sainthood. This post reminds me why I left the soul scene in early nineties and went to house clubs, it also makes me wonder why the f**k I am even thinking of getting involved again. Yours resignedly Non Soul Jock PS The new Frankie Knuckles LP has a great soul track on it, should I write to him to make sure he never does this again!!
  5. Hi there, good to meet you, if only virtually, any tips re new new cd's greatly appreciated, have been buying large amounts and the last 6 months the quality has been really good, unlike the start of last year! I think you have, would love to know the history of this record. Have you ever sen anything else by the artist? Cheers Jock
  6. Hi there, I take it you are the Pete Roberts who keeps Robin S up to date with new cds??? He mentioned you got a Sammy Gaha, still one of my favorite, what a bizzare history, on a French label as well as a Canadian rip off of a UK label, would love to know more. Cant see it being a boot at that time. Cheers Jock
  7. Hi Byrney, am heading down to Lifeline tomorrow, are you and Dean going? I remember i used to be always jealous of you lot having all the fun down in the coaches when I had to just walk along from Jims house, crazy days!! Cheers Jock PS There is a rumour that Dean was always on time in those days?? PPS Spot on about Mansfield, travelled down to most of Robs dos, and he packed the dance floor (okay smaller dance fllors then!) as much as he emptied them in my memory, great taste in NS.
  8. Hi Neil (I assume its Neil from Nottingham) good to chat to you at Kitchs, we need to do that cd swap we chatted about!! Spot on with your comments, the main difference then was there wasnt the overwhelming objective of keeping the dance floor busy as todays scene seems to have. Realise that numbers attending and balance of collectors/dancers has changed dramatically but cant help thinking we were right!! Keep meaning to write detailed article of Scotchland in these times, but work keeps getting in the way of my social life. Cheers Jock
  9. Ooh must be loads, only one can think of at work is Carol Anderson - Ill Get Off At The Next Stop, just lovely. Nice to you see you tipping deep soul things Eddie, still have a copule of tapes you did in the 80's that helped me discover deep soul properly, Cheers Jock PS See you at Prestatyn ?
  10. Interesting choices, and as rare as it may ,I think Pete has a point about Roy Hamilton, I love the record and always have done but on a pure soul type classification his voice is aimed at crossing over (a point better made by the as always very eloquent Billy Freemantle above). I think its interesting that a large number of the choices have been in the uptown big voice style, very emotional but not always classic soulful to me, and thats not a dig as thanks to Ady C's promting over this style over the years I do love it. To me Jackie Beavers Love that Never.. and Eddie Parker Im Gone are proper NS records but as soulful as you can get. Also an honorable mention to Jodi Mathis that someone mentions, hadnt heard it for years and on cd over headphones it amazed me how soulful that is. An underplayed imaginative oldie for one of the 35000 dj's on the scene to pick up maybe?? Cheers Jock
  11. I have it tucked away on my shelf filed under shi*e, must dig it out again and file it under in demand shi*e! Cheers Jock
  12. Chalky one of the many technical questions I might ask you next week, have been trying to record straight from olar on PC to disk but just does not recognise it, do you need special software? Cheers Jock
  13. Thanks Alison and John, its a gospel album is it not? If so I did have it at time but never really clicked with, no doubt gave it away to someone now laughing!! Thanks for that I have most of her 60's/70s abums (I think, she only did about 4 I thought) so was wondering which one, had forgotten she had done this, I think one track on this album did get some plays with the moddern guys. Cheers Jock
  14. Great novelty record Derek I told Pepsi he had to buy this as it was a great stomper!! Dave Molloy used to play this to me when I went down to see him, if I remember rightly the first line is "just got back from Scotchland" bizarre, must play it tonight. Cheers Jock PS the other side is of course the fantastic In A Moment.
  15. Spot on billy, great record, ood point too. Think that started my love affair with the slower side, Slightly off topic last year in NY decided to go to Appollo Theater and walk up through Harlem to see the place, in one of the most run down areas there was a cafe called Paris Blues, it looked old enough to be from the 60's. Didnt want to take picture as it a very non touristy area, Cheers Jock
  16. Is this 45 Alison, or album, if so which album? Cheers Jock
  17. Is this the same as Eugene Blacknell (think thats title), that was more 80's if I remember rightly but sure was told there was another better version of that, although remember no details (as usual). If so I take its a hard piece to find? Cheers Jock
  18. Hi Jason, did you ever get your mid tempo cd from me? Third time lucky I hope, must revive that thread as Mr Bicknells is still outstanding, cmon Mark I am sure Mrs Bicknell (or your youngster) can explain the technology to you ? Re Rose Royce, try their other track Best Love (I think) great 80's dancer, their strongest for me and got a few plays at the time. Re D-Train I think I was the only one talking about them, love them to bits, am very partial to prelude west end etc. Like to try and pick up WD's of them, also Salsoul WD's, last trip to NY they were all over the place but kept forgetting to get them!! I am on a bit of a buying freeze at moment but if you have spares drop me a list and I may be interested in some, have a few but not lots. Cheers Jock
  19. Its the candy and sweets 45 I have, well done for saving my pathetic memory, Cheers Jock
  20. I am pretty sure I have another version of this, duo again but better vocals (I suppose I would say that since I dont have N & J wouldnt I ) Cheers Jock
  21. Its actually Maurice Long, on 45 and LP, dont have the LP but believe it has at least one other good track. I used to play this regularly at Shotts, fantastic ending, bit slow for current crowd methinks. Cheers Jock
  22. Interesting one this Brett, I have real mixed feelings about the Stafford revival, however since I dont get to much these days the social thing has to be a big part of it for me, but still not enough to make me go to dos where I think music will not be for me. I left the scene in the mid 90's partly due to the music policy that was forming, to me it has to progress and be educating, that doesnt mean no oldies to me. Upstairs at Stafford was the most educational place when so called oldies were being played. I also dont think progressive has to mean no fun like everyone seems to think. Given the size of the attendance these days its ahrd to be different I suppose but then thats where places like Lifeline come in I suppose. Hmm a good question, I would love to get enought enthusiasm to get out my armchair and its a progressive scene that would do that, however thats just my choice! Yours thoughtfully and slightly wistfully Jock
  23. Sounds interesting Chalky, is it the same label as Marvin Holmes/Dorothy Morrison? Strange choice of tunes, having read some of the debates here recently have made me disillusioned re Northern a bit again so to cheer me up have been playing happy disco music! D Train - Your The One For Me (always liked it as disco hit but when heard it played on full club system in middle of house set it blew me away) D Train Walk On By - Just a great treatment of a great song, disco heaven. and finally a record I always turn to when needing cheered up The Dells Walk On By - Deep soul treatment of a great song (can you tell I like this song) it just lifts my spirits everytime. These have been on repeat on my turntable!! Cheers Jock
  24. I have Ben E King Cant Break The News on Greek Atlantic!! Given its failure in America, christ knows why it was released there!! Colin Law brought a load of Arethas/Sam & Daves etc on Greek and knowing my liking for other than Northern kindly gave me them as gift, never knew this was in among them till recently!! Cheers Jock
  25. I was just about to say what the f**k have you started Mr Smith, all this talk of Madchester etc, was also about to say I only know about soul but then noticed Byrnie has outed me below!! Have been watching this with delight today but too busy to join in! I have had the occasional pony tail, one fine specimen, one pathetic attempt, Hope you are well and your finger is healing nicely! Must say I do look quite handsome in that picture.
