  1. Theres actually a really great version of this on a 2004 by Tad Robinson, a white bluesy singer (sorry Fraser ) that I believe is getting played at Orwell (MR Trout mentioned it I think), well worth £14 but only on cd I am afraid. Cheers Jock
  2. Thats why I said I couldnt say that very often as I would have been too young to buy 70's things as new releases, my razor sharp wit is obviously wasted on here . Fopp was also a shop only opened in the 80's to prove I am not just trying to get out of a fauz pas!! Cheers Jock
  3. I paid 4.99 out of FOPP as a new release! Not often I can say that about a 70's album being the youngster I am !!! I had forgotten about the about track mentioned by Roger until buyin recent Grapevine cd and then thought bloody hell thats the best track on the album, Cheers Jock
  4. Oops should start at the bottom or I will get a row. !! Cheers Jock
  5. Pete I bought one off Rob Grant the other day, worth checking if he has another, reasonable at £40 as Robs price always are, maybe worth checking if he any more as he turns nice things up regularly, think he is RMG on here, have his mail at home if you need it. Cheers Jock
  6. Well our rugby team may be a bunch of girls blouses, our footie team may lower profile than Ian Levine currently, and our all nighter scene may be non existent at present but its now official, Scotland invented soul. Now understand why I am so attracted to the soul police uniform. Anyone see the Ch 4 programme tonight re the link between gospel and Scottish slave traders? Hmm maybe not something to be proud of after all but certainly a new slant on the birth of black music in America. Not sure if I like the idea or not but as I said interesting. Cheers Jock
  7. Good 80's soul on Kashifs most recent (?) cd from a year or so back, one side all new stuff and one side the Rumours album from the 80's with great examples of how good some 80's soul was, still available on cdbaby. Mind you probably easily available on original vinyl too but dont want to start that debate again do we Cheers Jock

    New York

No not jaded just you have most soul records known to man I believe! I have only been to NY a couple of times and I thought it was good for albums etc, yes pricy but then the day of cheap records is almost over I think we agree. I found that for a little bit less than you would pay here you would return with a decent amount, although you are right in that you are not going to get the big 70's albums as Americans are now chasing them. I also had the comment "no NorthernSoul" here, inoldies museum, but again if you are prepared ehre you will gert some nice general soul stuff (ballads etc). For West Village I assume you mean around Bleeker St etc, which I actually thought was okay, again pricy but enough interesting items. For disco 12" (the real stuff not the Bee Gees etc ) I think NY is good but you then have to compete with local collectors (Dance Tracks etc) but for Prelude/Salsoul type stuff it is there if you look around. I did have a couple of adresses in Brooklyn for shops allegedly full of soul but was told in our hotel not to go around these areas. Who knows. Even if you dont get records its not a bad place to be hangin out is it! Cheers Jock
  9. Larry Clinton - Shes Wanted.
  10. I have just realised I am talking tosh above, I have the same sided volt demo with Try To Leave Me... (amazing ballad one of my all time top 10 deep sides) and always thought there was a rare issue with Best Is Yet To come on Volt? Reading above am wrong (not that unusual), so is the Volt issue quite common then (compared to others?) Thanks for sorting my fuddled brain. Jock
  11. Ended up over £400?? Crazy, just left one on a list for 150 as that was way over. The flip is great deep soul not dancer (I have just the demo with the ballad on both sides ). I will try and post a soundclip of that side tonight. Cheers Jock
  12. Interesting question, regarding current artists not many would (could??) sing in that style, think there are a few with the ability. Mary J Blige for one I think could cut it live, but her material may not always lend to that, I have a cd by Denetria Champ who I think vocally is very similar but its a gospel cd so not sure you can compare directly. For old school its even more interesting, do people think Aretha Franklin is the most soulful? She is probably my no. 1 (so much so for my 40th last year we travelled to cape cod to see her "farewell concerts as was desperate to see her at least once in my life) but there are others who could qualify for the most soulful but were not successful. Loleatta Holloway was mentioned, Rozetta Johnson is another in similar style, there are many more who for a one off could equal Aretha. But overall she is my no. 1, even on some of her more well known stuff she does it for me, think I might have an Aretha day now!! Cheers Jock
  13. Chalky how are you young man, apologies about dashing on Friday but was late and hate getting on bus while speaking on mobile (think its an age thing!) Any chance of the Jimmy Burns mp3 also (and the other side if you have it), one of the ones I let go but want back, desparately!! Cheers Jock PS hello Tony, welcome over here!!
  14. Superb tune Trevor, new to me too. Well worth a spin. Cheers Jock
  15. No it just sound a ridiculously sanctimonious comment with little relevance to my post, however as suffering a seriously fuzzy head from Cleethorpes I may have read that wrongly, after all we have all done that at sometime or other on here havent we. A serious thought from your quip however is I think we would all be surprised at the sort of records that were played on radios, remember seeing some charts of Detroit radios somewhere (SOS ?) and it included some fairly obscure stuff, also remembering somebody (Ian Clark??) saying he had spoken to somebody who remembered Eddie Parker Love You Baby being played on radio when working on Ford Motors line. Would imagine it would be limited to local stations however due to various payola requirements, anybody know any more facts about this. Not so sure about them being played so much in USA clubs as from what I have read (not a great deal to be honest) most clubs at that time were local dances or illegal drinking dens, however that would still give them some exposure. Anybody recommend any good books or reading matter on any of this? Most of the USA soul books I have are more sociology based. Cheers Jock
  16. Its certainly not Northern although was able to play it out in 80's, however not surprised that is doesnt appeal todays Northern scene, its a proper soul record Jock
  17. Bet you its not as good as the b side of the Don Gardner 45, a truly great slice of blackamerican soul music!! Cheers Jock
  18. Ah but I believe you may have been tutored in some way by Randy Cozens or his associates, in which case you are obviously totally exempt from my criticism! Seriously it was a light hearted jibe at the modern crowd from London (many who are friends) and their recent acceptance of some old Modern (or not so modern as maybe we should call it now!!) sounds, no offence attended. apart from a gentle reminder of the old boys!! Cheers Jock
  19. Well unfortunately, unlike you obviously were, I wasn't priviliged enough to be around American neighbourhoods in 60's and 70's to hear them being played or I would credit them. I have only been lucky enough to be part of the Northern Soul scene where one of my morals, along with deeply unpopular originals only ethos, is credit where credits due. Cheers Jock
  20. Yes and he announced it as something new that the soul world needs, or soe such excited words, which raised a chuckle amongst a number of hes who remember this from a number of years ago when it was played to death!! Another one for these southern boys to do their homework more carefully!! Cheers Jock
  21. Interesting as I am watching a couple of his, is it for album or 45? Think he is in states so may find first invoice local postage, however as he is member here (I think) he may be able to explain better than my guesses!! Cheers Jock
  22. Pete can you bring list of dvds to Prestatyn, remember seeing list and there was quite a few that I fancied, particularly the ones with the TV progs on, Chasing Rainbows etc. And for anyone reading I will never play them out at soul nights will file them clearly as non originals Cheers Jock PS to prove I dont miss all your comments agree with your thoughts on the play.
  23. Was this the one where somebody died of Black Bombers od at end?? If so Dave Evison was consultant on this, he did say at time (I think) thay they listened to some of his advice but ignored others. I remember bribing my parents to go out on this night as heard there was lots of drug references in it!! Cheers Jock
  24. Almost all of the Isleys UK Tamla releases I think, also a Chuck Jackson UK release, had nice white blondes on cover! Assume it was more prominent in the 60's in UK due to demographics of time, Anyone confirm/debate! Cheers Jock
