  1. It was definitely on Withers 1st monster tape of all new stuff, probably as early as Clifton Hall, but wont argue on cover up title, my memory nots so good these days . Anybody out there with the casting vote, Mr Finch you must remember out there in Lurker land, or is my dementia rapidly spreading!! . Chris Plant had some great records, a good name for the underrated dj thread! Whatever it was covered as, still does it for me, great record. Cheers Jock
  2. I thought it was covered as Chip Tyler or something like that, it was Withers who had it was it not?? Cheers Jock

    Port

Is this same as Josie Armstead on Tayster? Used to play that version out before it became called R&B ALso I take it the other side of Let Me Go (?) possibly one of my favorite big Maybelle sides, bit slow for today methinks but reduces me to quivering wreck everytime, if so have to embarrasedly say I have never played the NBFY side, a mistake I will rectify this evenng! Cheers Jock
  4. You dont understand it Roger, you cant having never been part of it, Truth is most people dont get it, why should they, heck not sure I really get it these days , but to me and most people I know its what NS was all about, as Mr Bicknell has said much more succintly than I can. In all honesty there is no logic to, but then there is no logic to sitting on cold damp river banks throwing worms into water to catch fish when you could go down the fishmonger and get it ready prepared, sure some people will disagree. As one of your current favorite future NS monster sounds says "It Is What It Is"!! I sort of agree now (as do more people than I would have thought reading above posts) about the unacceptable preaching to venues and people, think now its becoming generally accepted the local scenes are a different scene and have a purpose, also agree re your comments about the big venues almost being more likely to play anything these days, as a number of people have said, people can choose to support these or not. I think the bigger problem currently is the amount of people wanting to dj for some bizarre reason! Okay enough agreeing with you Roger, bad for my cred at the OVOAA (Original Vinyl Only Anonomous Association), one thing I am not sure about your stance, would you be happy if someone turned up for the Kings Hall Stoke with a series of Togetherness cds and played the big tickets of these, or are you saying its only acceptable if its cdrs of their own records?? Cheers Jock
  5. And the debate does go on.... One interesting point Dave A made and everyone has just flown by was the tolerance towards local dos playing what they want, not something I would have bought into back in the day, but on last few years have realised they do have their place in todays scene, (or should that be scenes as still think there are at least 2 separate scenes!!), as somebody else said, you can choose not to go! Oh well off to bed after listening to my latest r&b cd (2005 r&b not 1955 ), but obviously its never to be played out..... oh shit there goes the debate again!! Cheers Jock
  6. I seem to remember talking to Poke at CH and he said he had this and a few others well before Searling but didnt play them out much, anyone confirm? If so assume that means they must have been with Anderson in mid 70's no? Superb record. Cheers Jock
  7. The same lovely lad that held Harry Starr for aboutr 3 months while I decided whether I wanted to pay as much s £20 for it!! Have bumped into him recently in Frankfurt and Paris so gets around a bit. Cheers Jock PS Rob just realised havent sent you scans, have night in record room tonight booked, will do them then, cheers.
  8. It was on a second label, but dont think that was it, then since I dont remember what it was really on not much help!! Sorry. As an aside we went to see FF leading the Count Basie orchestra and Ady Harley showed him a Harlem Rumble, to which he gave what seems to be the standard reply, didnt know that had come out!! Cheers Jock
  9. Ady I have the Southern Soul one (On Video) and I think the first one at my dear mums (say think as she is legendary at taping wrong channel etc). Can lend you them next week at Cleethorpes, dont have the ability to copy them so would like them back at your leisure. Appreciate not emailed you yet about next week, definitley coming, only me but doubt about my arrival time/day, will mail you by Monday! Cheers Jock Still not convinced re the GSH, my understanding was he fairly well known in the big ciites but must admit not sure enough to disagree with you probably having better facts (and memory despite your extra years)
  10. Good point here Richard, I did enjoy tonights program having only seen last weeks one as comparison, because I thought its linking to the political times was very relevant to the music it was talking about and quite well done. Generally lots of artists we could say they should include but BBC probably have a get out in they are not that mainstream so not much material available, but you are right thats not the case with GSH, who like you I love as an artist. However, overall from the 2 programs I have seen I think its a really worthwhile show, could be better to be perfect but still think its a minor miracle that this is on mainstream tv and is getting to people who dont know or love the music like we do. The footage of James Carr last week was worth the whole series, truly amazing. Cheers Jock
  11. If you are talking about the Street Soul compilation that Dave refers to later DJ Bigger, who is responsible for these, has been on EMS forum saying its all totally legal and above board. Cheers Jock
  12. Its on Congress if I remember rightly and called somthing along the lines of Come Softly To Me, and yes loads of pop versions (suppose thats a pop version too )think it was a hit for the Fleetwoods (having bought a few other versions in my youth looking for the Northern one!!!) Big sound at Clouds Edinburgh, and as Steve says above, didnt sound half as bad then Cheers Jock
  13. It went for $467 (approx!) dollars, had a very interesting b-side title, is this well known? Anyone got a sound file of this, particularly the b-side?????? Yours Sherlock Homes like, Jock !
  14. Great record, fine taste there, Tim Brown had a number of these recently, not sure if as cheap as should be, also Manship had one recently again not so cheap (£25 I think), but try Rod Dearlove at voices first, he may have one although not sure. Cheers Jock
  15. Reading above I probably like this more than most so far, however I listen to quite a bit of contemporary soul/house (and even a little hip hop but dont tell anyone!) as well so was more keen to understand what some modern remixers could do. From that point although I think there are some worthy points to it have to agree with Jason that the overall result is not as good as I feel it could have been. I do think there are some really good moments on it the Marvin Gaye, possibly helped by the quality of the song, the Stevie Wonder where I feel they have tried to something different with the song, changing its mood which to me is the point of any remix, the Diana Ross track as I feel by stripping it down to her voice only almost makes her sound soulful, it certainly makes the most of what talent she has, the Undisputed Truth is great, again making the original vocals stand out more, and sorry Davie but I really like the Edwin Starr War, as like the Marvin Gaye I think this could be played out now (at more contemporary nights) and they have put some thought into how they could change the mood of the record, very difficult given te subject of the song. Appreciate this is not for everyone but glad I bought it, worth a risk if you like some newer stuff, however havent gone back and listened to originals again, not sure if that would change my view! Cheers Jock PS There is an Atlantic one, which I really like but is very different from above in its mostly 80's material, will do full review of that elsewhere if any interest.
  16. I agree with Gareth (again), although maybe not about it being the best ever, but certainly a record that has got it all for me these days, ashamed to admit only heard it recently on a Grapevine cd!! And as for dancing to it, I dance so slowly to everyhing these days, its easy Cheers Jock
  17. Was the 12" of this not played at jazz funk clubs at wrong speed when new release?
  18. Well I keep reading through this to think of a title and find somebodys covered it, my top 3 are mentioned Betty Boo, proper Northern Soul, loved it from first time, Chuck Jackson WWTL, spine tingling and reminder of great days, but tops for me is the oft mentioned Diane Lewis, possibly in my all time top few records of anysort!! One that would have made as No 1 for me was Searlings Charletta Lies, unissued Sussex record I thought, but believe it was found to be issued, anyone confirm? Grapevine have been throwing some nice unissued stuff lately (assume it still counts if cd only) the Anita Robbins track off the recent Most Wanted cd I think would sound great out although it is a bot left field vocally, and the Syl Johnson track of either Sound/ Talk of The Grapevine would sound great on one of those camping weekends John and Alison seem to love. Oops just remembered another worthy of mention, Popcorn Wylies Hanky Panky, superb dance music, Cheers Jock

    Heroes

Spot on Gareth and Mark, although I have to say that many of the dj's that came through in the 80's, in particular the early to mid 80's made this happen, As an easily influenced youth I think Searling was a hero to me at end of Casino, he was to many and acted like he should be as did a number of other dj's. However when the next generation came along they were to a man one of the boys and many still are, why I have always felt rotherham/stafford beyond you felt a real part of it, unlike previously. Exactly how it should be. However that is getting away from the other point, most important, and the people we should worship, if worship is your thing, is the artists. I have a huge many heroes thanks to music, maybe a bit strong calling them heroes but the Marvin Gayes, Arethas, Bobby Womacks etc are my heros for their talent but also their ability to deliver despite many struggles, appreciate it is not exaclty making peace in the world, so maybe that says more about me than them!! Cheers Jock
  20. This is definitely an old Keb record, or acetate as someone said, one that would be correctly attributed to Stafford I would say, forgot how good this is, fair gets my heart pumping. Just so I understand todays scene is this now officially a Funk record then ?? Cheers Jock Ooops should have read whole thread, already stated it was keb record and it was acetate, apologies for jumping in, the sound got me all excited!!
  21. Hi Mike, I do buy a fair few cd's so have been meaning to dig out at home for reviews, assume you mean those with Northern/70'sd connection rather than brand new, although will try and dig out a few that I think may be of interest. The most obvious recent ones are Grapevines recent output, very consistent and diferrent, Ones from last few months Phillip Mitchells 2nd one of all unissued stuff - very good cd although have to be honest and say not as good as first, a couple of tracks where think he is holding back vocally, probably more selling the song, and to be fair there is reference to this on notes, however 3 or 4 tracks that would sound great out now in one of those tenty things, and a great version of Hurt So Good where he erally leans into it on one of my favorite songs. Not life affirming but definitely essential! Cicero Blake cd - a fantastic journey though the career of a very competent singer, some early soul which I quite like in this and it shows very well how his voice developed through the years, couple of cracking ballads and 2 great dancers unknown to me, all (?) issued stuff but still great, couple of more recent bluesy things at end that may put some of the more traditionalists off but still in the essential category. Most Wanted Vol 2 - compilation of Malaco stuff, have to be honest and say dissapointed on first listen to this but think that was because of how good vol 1 was, some great 70's dancers up to some more recent stuff including 2 great numbers done in last few years (Vick Allen and Antonuique (?), both off great y2k cd's) Again a nmber of unnissued stuff that makes this worth buying, particularly the opening number Anita Dobbins (?) which has strange vocals but I think would sound outstanding on a big system, have to be honest and say there are a few on here which I think plod along but given price and the 4 or 5 must have tracks along with the unissued stuff on it means its well worth a punt! Can add some more if people interested, as said will dig out a few new release cd's that may have tracks of interest when I get home. Cheers Jock
  22. Pretty sure you are right as Tim A used to sit up in balcony area and sell records, cant remember a dance floor but remember an area through an arch?? Was a long time ago!!
  23. Souveniers ofA Heartache being a stunning dancer that deserves some play by here on the label if I remember rightly!! Cheers Jock
  24. Totally agree about PB and the influence CH had, used to often travel down myself to that and for a year or so went every fortnight, Not so sure about the many sounds being played uncovered but you are spot on about records being associated with Stafford when they were CH. Re the Dave Withers story, did Dave not dj right at the very first nighters there also (is it right in saying it actually started before Wigan finished?). Amazingly influential period, used to worship at the alter of Gary Rushbrooke but hung around with Carlisle/Morecombe/Lancaster crowd and really opened my eyes to all eras of soul. Never sure about the Preston St, dancers though, think I have always been too miserable for such fun. Very special time and one that sorted out the wheat from the chaff after Wigan in many ways!! Happy memories, Cheers Jock
  25. Spot on, this and poet 2 have hardly any bad tracks, which to be honest most of his other albums have. so for a casual buyer think these should be starting point for Womack, I have most of his albums and love him. An alternative suggestion is try one of the cd's out (Womack at Memphis I think is one) and then you can get flavour and track the albums down once you have seen the tracks that appeal. Will warn you once you start you will be hooked, he is the master for me! Cheers Jock
