  1. Does that make it bad though? Methinks another example of because its so popular we shouldnt like it. Sometimes (very rarely I agree) the cream did rise, and this is a great example. So many people like it because it is so good, Agree totally about the wankers naming it for credibility but so what. Still the greatest complete album for me, musically vocally and lyrically it just comes together. Sorry Pikey dont bite me Cheers Jock
  2. Have always said this was the Magnetics of Motown, would have been the perfect rare soul record if it was!! Now whether it should ever be played even though its not rare and indeed a pop hit, I suppose thats another thread ! Great question Colin Cheers Jock
  3. Agree with most points (as seems to be the norm with you Gareth ), however would put Gaye above both due to his writing talents, however am biased as Marvin is probably my favourite artist now, although to be honest it took me a while to really appreciate his just how great his talents were and how beautiful his music is Cheers Jock
  4. Its a 2003 cd, Darrell Nulisch Times Like This Severn Records (www.severnrecords.com), try Rod Dearlove, rest of cd is fairly bluesy. May have dissapeared like lots of these cds have already. Something tells me (damn these voices ) It may have got a reissue on 7" as its on a Togetherness cd I think Cheers Jock And in answer to the first question is no Aretha is the most underrated soul singer in my view in that most real soul fans seem to knock her, I assume due to her popularity, but to me she is up there with the greatest.
  5. Ooh good call, how much for this these days, proper Northern Soul, would love to throw myself around a dancefloor to this again. And yes it was a Russ spon, one of his better moments to say the least ! Cheers Jock
  6. Hmm methinks should have listened to Chalky last Saturday when he told me to pick this up sharpish, too late methinks Cheers Jock
  7. Oops nearly forgot, can I join in this now please? Would love an excuse to dig through my 12"S. Cheers Jock
  8. Oi Mr D and Mr P, you were obviously one of the many seen running to the record room when I started my spots at Allanton, I played this on and off there, normally at start of spot to lull dancers into false sense of security before dropping the pace Oh and of course I played it on Loma! Cheers Jock
  9. Flip it over for a really nice crossovery track if I remember rightly Cheers Jock OOps this was meant to be posted on thread about Evil by Posse, wonder where that went. Have no idea what the b-side of IMNTK is like, apologies Jock
  10. Great dj, formed my taste through end of Wigan & Rotherham days, different taste from anyone else in those days, he struggled as wasnt appetite for his stuff in early 80's. Would have have been ideal for Stafford when it kicked of properly but as Steve says he just packed in. Also top bloke, always had time to talk about records. Dean Anderson still travels to football with him these days I think. Cheers Jock
  11. Wow stunning record, never heard this before, really like that, way out my range unfortunately! Cheers Jock
  12. I have an Impressions LP withj Sooner or Later on Curtom, havent seen a 45. Have the Patti & Lovelites on Cottillion. Can get numbers etc tonight if you need. Cheers Jock
  13. I am afraid it does nothing for me, absolutely dreadful vocals with a bland backing more suitable to some childrens program, appreciate in the minority here but have roundly hated this record for nearly 20 years, and I dont normally do hate Yours with grinding teeth just thinking of that awful intro. Jock
  14. Its yet another UK made question though, most Americans would be mystified by our genrefying (is that a word? it is now!) and analysing sub cultures of black music. I assumed Soul Power was American because he made some great points (must add some smilies or Dan will pick on me as this does read a bit serious ) I personally dont listen to much James Brown personally but his influence on soul music as an evolving culture (in America now, not Wigan or darkest Yorkshire etc. ) is huge, how he handled his business etc. I think this is a good example of how we into Northern sometimes forget about the wider world of soul, and Mr Brown is a major player in that, Not sure I totally agree with Dayos point however about the title being totally media driven, from what I read Mr Brown was (and still is by recent evidence) very keen on being known as the greatest and marketing himself as such, and also wasn't slow at sacking people who didn't go along. Musically his finest moment for me was Georgia On My Mind where he turns it into a magical example of deep soul at its most tortured, again not too relevant to Northern but if your tastes are wider its worth a listen. Now onto the who invented funk question..... the UK media discuss! Cheers Jock
  15. Ahh is there a more housy version then? Would love to hear that. Cant help you on the Ramsay Lewis thing, the Prominent cd doesnt namecheck any samples and only credits writers from the group so either chancing it hoping nobody has ears as educated as yourself Cheers Jock
  16. Okay Billy, much better after the intro although very retro sounding, assume this is a European thing, vocals sound pretty Jazzy and husky, not the best for me but certainly not the worst!! Cheers Jock
  17. Is it not on Bell and yes pre Hi, fairly early in his career I thought, nice enough record but way overshadowed by his later work IMVHO. Cheers Jock
  18. Pearls before swine Mr Roberts Mind you scan the cover in for Pete S and he will change his mind, they are white and rocky looking!! : Billy what was that, sounds like Jess Yates been reincarnated. Just got the cd this week too Pete, sounds good but not sure its the best, Move Into Your Season still takes some beating for me, quality all the way. Also got Patti Labelles latest cd with a great version of Your Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else, which sounds brilliant with her stronger vocals. Just listening to the Philly remix album, not sure about this one, although has a very interesting banging house mix of Cliff Nobles - the Horse (no really) which will post up here if Pete S says anything horrible again. Cheers Jock
  19. Matt again you confuse Northern Soul with the wider soul world, suggest you log onto to www.cdbaby.com and work your way through the new soul cd's on there, unfortunately there is a whole load of real s**t but in amongst this there are genuine soul talents having to flog their cd's without a record deal, many far more soulful than Joss Stone, I do agree however she doesn't deserve the criticism she gets, from people like me admittedly, what we should do is promote these other soul cd's, however I suppose I like others get annoyed when we constantly talk about already well publicised acts other than the new soul acts that are struggling even more than before to make it! Cheers Jock
  20. Hi Colin, I think having seen your picture subsequently we have been in the same hotel at least twice in Poretta, including the Syl Johnson year. This is the first year in about 6 I have not been there, my mate reported back that Cicero Blake was good on Friday, was just waiting on Billy Preston (assume things were late as usual at Porretta ) Its a great little place, very bizzare on the Saturday/Sunday afternoons sitting at the cafe near the new venue and watching all these american singers & musicians just chilling in the sunshine, With Syl Johnson my mate who can speak fluent italian helped him change money so he came and sat and had coffee with us, giving us a free cd of him and his brother for helping, decided not to bug him about old records thinking he would have forgotten them but as he talked more about all the hip hop guys who had either paid him or not paid him for sampling, decided to tell him how much his Special Agent track was worth and warn him off people trying to get them, he not only remembered it but sang a few lines off the top of his head, then proceeded to sign Teardrops, it was magical but almost surrreal, Only in Porretta can you imagine sitting having coffee with Syl Johnson for an afternoon!!! Unfortunately I missed the James Carr/Shirley Brown/James Govan etc years but still worth a visit. if only for the food and wine and good company . Cheers Jock

Sent you MP3 of both sides today, hopefully okay, cheers. Jock
  22. How would you know, you hardly listen to soul music. I have to admit to reappraising my opinion of Joss Stone, after hearing her live recently (on tv anyway,) no doubt she has a good, although not great, voice, and she does understand the dynamics of soul singing, However it was all put into perspective when one of James "Shambles" Brown backing singers, came forward to sing just a few lines, she was much more powerfull than Joss, far more soulful and held the note far better, we will probably never know her name and she will probably never record her own record, and she probably isnt even the greatest backing singer in the world, hmm. Yours reflectively Jock
  23. Absolutely stunning record, finally managed to throw myself around a dance floor to this at Cleethorpes having only really heard it properly on the Grapevine cd recently !! Kind of record that reminds me why I toured the country trying to hear new record, Record of year for me in new Northern type of chart!!! Anychance of playlist (appreciate wrong thread for that), from Gareth, love to hear sort of tunes you play. Cheers Jock
  24. Andy pressure on me for remembering!! I think I said there were 2 other scorchers, I knew there were more than that but nowhere near as many as Gareth has posted, fairly prolific label. I think the other one I thought was a rare Roger Hatcher album on same label, was that my simple brain getting confused? I think the FD and JC are pretty hard to track down on album are they not? How are you doing Andy? Thanks for DVD really good, might pop in and buy a pint at the Street tonight! Cheers Jock

No Better For You is the same as Jo Armstead on Tayster, have you heard this version Davie, if not will send you MP3 as its absolutely identical to BM, so the same that some of the vocal phrasing is obviously copied from one, wonder which!! BM possible slightly better screams and a great ad lib at end, cant believe never listened to that side, thanks for that. More interesting about the 2 records, despite being identical have different writer credits, BM is Ashford-Simpson but a Jack Taylor production, JA is written and produced by Jack Taylor, wonder who is telling porkies, know who my money is on. Cheers Jock
