Given the taste you have exhibited so far that counts as resounding proof that these are all in fact great records (except George Lemons, somebody must have told you that was a bad record)

Ady they are really nice and very appropriate words, I think its really important that people remember all sides of Oz (and there were many sides! ). Oz was crazy (and fu**king annoying at times) but he was sweet and funny, unbelievably funny, most people only saw the crazy side but he was a really intelligent bloke, and knew his music, had great taste and introduced me to quite a few records, in fact in early days he gave me lots just because he thought I would like them. I havent seem him for a number of years but still have great memories. Cheers Jock

Great record, not Crajon but have forgotten Doris showing she can do uptown style, thing theres another version thats pretty good as well if I remember rightly (Barbara West ????) O.V. Wright's "A Nickel And A Nail" is one of my alltime favourite deep soul tunes, very soulful indeed. I also like James Fry "Tumblin' Down" but I think the other side "Still Around" is far superior.

Definitely Pye, bought this off Dean Anderson when only the UK promo copy existed, back in mid 80's when it was played extensively up here , a while before proper copies turned up, even longer before the US copies as I seem to remember it being rumoured as UK only. Said before, great record in its time but not sure want to hear it now, think it might spoil some memories!! Steve Mancha - You're Still In My Heart (Groovesville) Great mid tempo from my man of the 60's soul stylee, great vocals and pulsing backing. Ollie & The Nightingales - Mellow Way You Treat Your Man (Stax) Unusual style for this label, lolloping (?) slightly faster than mid tempo Claude Baby Huey - Feel Good All Over (Early Bird) Great slightly up from mid tempo dancer, good vocals, gets me going every time. Kim Tolliver - Get A Little Soul (Sure-Shot) Probably be classed as R&B in these genrefied times, but great raunchy dance soul for me, always loved this style and thought should have one real up tempo monster. Kenni Rossi - Dont Lose This Love (Arctic) Slower than slow, walking pace but great (blue eyed?) soul, too slow for even an ender now maybe, but believe it or not I first heard Keb playing this many moons ago. 5 70's Chuck Overton - Is It Possible (Kapp) - Had this for years for the other side (I,m So Thankful) but only recently flipped this over for a far better over tenty/cross overy type sound, great backing. Steptones - Let The People Talk (IX Chains) Blind buy, and very surprised, good 70's dancer with great vocals. Frankie Gearing - Spinning Top (Beale St) Brilliant uptempish dancer, once played by Robin "Daddy" Salter, and typical of his great taste, believe its gathering popularity again so maybe not right for this thread but what the heck, its superb. Jean Plum - Look At The Boy (Hi) Great sultry and sexy soul, just sublime and many more words beginning with s. Was surprised how many people didnt know this back in 80's, not sure about now but again one for the dancing round the bedroom naked (just remember to close the curtains!). Universal Mind - Reach Out For Me (Red Coach) Finish off with some happy clappy life affirming disco (yes it is disco, I love disco there I have confessed), makes me smile loudly every time I hear it. Absolutely Andy, there are always exceptions, although would suggest thats the issue, they are only exceptions not the norm, and hopefully its not coming over as me saying everythings crap nowadays, was really answering some points on how to move current scene along and was disagreeing, while spouting some thoughts of my tastes. Could be a devil however and say that you have lost a bit of quality from Sheridans as no Butch (probably not as bad as he plays elsewhere lots) and no Cliff Steele, one of the top guys for my musical taste (note my taste not everyone elses ), however am being pedantic and looking for things to moan about there!!! Have heard good things about Middleton from people I trust, so may try and get my bathchair pushed down for one! Cheers Jock

4 Tops - Ask The Lonely, has had me blubbing while djing. Aretha Franklin - It Only Happens , blubbing in a joyous happy way, so not sure if that counts. Linda Jones _ Dont Go (I cant Bear To Be Alone) - possibly one of the most heart ripping moments on record, although bizarrely used to play it to cheer me up when down which it did due its sheer soulfulness and her artistry. Couldn't attend. surely you mean chose not to attend due to your changing priorities, oh and a scene that was suddenly hard work to keep going and wasnt presented to you in one neat venue. Some of us chose the scene over, or even as well as families etc, all through the 80's. Despite Bretts apology later I agree with him above, the 80's was when the scene became proper again and properly underground, the way it should be for many of us who very rarely attend due to current state. If staying underground means no more newcomers then so be it, selfish I know but so what it would mean a scene attractive to me and people who I think make the scene, not lots of people who can just pop down to their local sceneor who want to be somebody. And this is not a dig at newcomers, the ones who I have met (Shane, Baz are the type we want but lets get real these are the exception as Shane later points out. And before you spout about different types of music as you do later in thread, I buy everything from 1960 to 2005, but if I want to hear funk or reggae or house I will go to to the sort of place where I will hear the real deal, not a watered down night where they play something to appeal to the masses. I have for years agreed with the lets drop Northern for Rare soul or something but seeing your logic for it makes me think there is good reason to keep it as Ken says, as all you seem to want to do is create a watered down scene, I often regret i dont make more of an effort these days but reading posts like your various ones on this thread makes me remember why I dont bother. Hmm have watched this debate with interest (particularly the predictable scuffles half way through!) and surprisingly I am not as against the film as thought would have been, in past would totally have agreed with Brett and really preferred they leave it alone. However the play Once Upon A Time In Wigan has totally changed my mind. I will admit I blubbed my eyes out all through that as that play was not just about a great time in my life it was actually about me and thoughts I had (me and probably about 4000 others but thats besides the point) and it reflected my life within a piece of art which I found incredibly moving. I like theatre and film but it very rarely engages me in way music has done when its been at its most special, but this play was different, I think the main difference was it was about a time and a place but also mostly about people, Northern Soul people which I am proud to count myself as one, no matter how little I attend these days, and they got it right in my opinion, there were lots of laughs but mostly great memories of the best time of my life, and I dont mean just Wigan, I mean my teens, when your innocence means all that feeling of new experiences and the forming of lifetime friendships can never be repeated. I think our main worry is that it wont reflect the scene and I think thats guaranteed, but remember this is a drama and not fact, I would think it is not trying to tell the story of Northern as such, and therefore surely if they represent the fun and the people and the reason we were all going, with mostly working class backgrounds, then thats worthy, and as Mark says if they get the right advice thats possible. I think to reflect the scene properly it would take a documentary from one of our own, and as has somebody has said in another thread its unlikely we will get enough people agreeing to do that. Also how do you represent todays scene, which scene would you choose? I am not saying this is going to be great, I think its a chance for Northern to be reflected in a piece of art but not represented as nobody could do that properly I dont think without being on the scene, and if they do that properly then I think they are successfull.
