  1. It was also played the last year or so of Wigan when Russ seemed to go through phase of playing what seemed obvious records with the vocals stripped off, bloody awful one this. I heard they were Soussain at that time but didn't realise they were years old, Though he had bought one of those new fangled computers very very posh folks had in those days!! Cheers Jock
  2. Ojays Xmas Aint Xmas great 70's singalong and there is a (I think) Horace Ott/Chocker Campbell (???) record on 60;s detroit label that Guy H used to play at festive season, cant remember details. Deliberate mistake now changed!!!! Cheers Jock PS Lots of xmas albums at home scared to admit (Gladys Knight/Alexander O'Neil/Temptations) always seem to be compelled to buy them when I see them cheap but I never actually listen to them! One worth a buy for pure musical value is the Cottillion xmas album with Luther, John Edwards and a few other great tracks.
  3. I second, that really enjoyed it, quite a few I didn't know and one you announced, Sebastian Williams, I though I have that and its crap, listened to it and thought wow. Now moved it of the not so good shelf and off course will not admit it was ever there!!! Cheers Jock PS Did think Mark was calling you Bratt at one point, sure it must have just been my ears!!
  4. I thought that too but thought would wait till someone more knowledgable than me suggested, you fit that bill well Gareth If it is I have a spare. sorting out my records found a few doubles (doh!) that and Clarence Jackson _ Wrap It Up on RR, if anyone interested in swops for them let me know by PM Cheers, Jock PS Gareth if you have Bobby Foster for sale you obviously get first option for above, dont want to leap in??
  5. 3rdded, f***ing fantastic piece of music, Jim O'Hara found a few of these and spread the word. proper soul music, seems strange on 12" though, anyone know the year and history of it?? Was a 12" (horrible pink vinyl mind) of this in ebay other week £5 and not one bid, was going to post link here but didn't want to in case someone was watching for bargain. Have to look out couple of 12"'s for Mr Gasher today so will find this and play it a few 100 times I think. Cheers Jock
  6. No its Jock O'Connor from Edinburgh, we used to keep in touch in Rotherham days, assuming same Mike, you were daft enough to follow Celtic!!!! if its not the same Mike oops! Cheers Jock
  7. Think Chris Anderton (Midas Touch) had one on here earlier, his mail and phone number are in the thread, sorry dont have them to hand, Cheers Jock
  8. I'll agree with Mr Nightingale (as usual) and call it even further, its a f***king great soul record, what a vocal, definitely not one for the dancefloor but proper soul. Any venue brave enough to feature something this slow now???? Cheers Jock
  9. Is this the guy who moved to Sheffield (for Uni I think, very unusual in NS circles in those days!!) and followed Celtic everywhere?? If so say a big hi from me, we kicked around a bit at end of Wigan start of Rotherham days, say a big hi to him from Jock O'Connor from Edinburgh. PM with his email if he remembers me and is happy with that. Cheers Jock
  10. I have Class Action on Jive UK, assume same track. PM me your email address Ritchie and will attempt to send you MP3's of both tonight. Cheers Jock
  11. Think theres a thread on here about this already Mark, cant work the search or would do a link, unissued Sussex recording or another version is that, Rob Marriot had a version by ?? Sharon Paige ?? which might be the sussex one, really cant quite remember. Anyone less senile than me? One of my all time favorites whover its by and a monster from those old days in Clouds Edinburgh!! Cheers Jock
  12. Steve dont you think that Anderson did all of the work for Richard, and a lot of others in these days, certainly how I heard it, and I also agree about JA asking (think more telling!) to cover up, although I beleive he denies that now. Things like Larry Houston he was sitting on quantity when Searling playing covered up. Does JA's habit of scoring out label addresses and numbers count as covering up also, how crap does that look now. I have some fairly common records (in fact some people would say al my records are!) that have this done to them Cheers Jock
  13. Bit of useless trivia, covered up as Clouds in tribute to one of Searlings favorite nighters, Clouds in Edinburgh, and rightly so Cheers Jock
  14. Just been thinking of making a cd of stuff like this, not listened to many in years, off top of my head Iceman - How Can I get Over A Fox Like You Ben E King Its All Over Bettye Lavvette - Your Turn To Cry Banks And Hampton - Gonna Have To Tell Her Walter Jackson Walls That Separate Us And 47 million more that cant think of right now!! Cheers Jock
  15. I will put one up tonight when I get home if no-one else does, one thing to point out is the cd is its on is possibly the worst cd that you could imagine, this is the only good track on, so buy the vinyl guys!! Although one point of note is on the cd is Debbie Dobbins singing, a Dollie Parton look a like (and sound a like!), seem to remember that name from some beachie type tunes that Thorley played back in history. Cheers Jock
  16. As I dont want to upset Mandy will make this my last word on subject If the newcomers dont get into the snobbery about the music then some would argue they dont get the scene in the first place, we've debated this before, changing the scene and the people purely to attract new people with no regard for taste means its not a decent scene anymore, thats assuming it still is a decent scene. If you are meaning snobbery to the people then different thing, cant comment on that nowadays, it was a problem in the good old days but then once people got through the hard time most of them are still connected to the music, so its a double edged sword in many ways. My last paragraph, which still seems clear to me, was saying I think being into soul music has made me better than people who are not, and has certainly made me better friends than if I was not, if that makes me a snob, lock me up and throw the key away. Jock PS ignored the right wing comment earlier but think you will find many people fitting into this musical bag are anything but that, however if you mean they dictate only good soul should be played they have my vote.
  17. Some would say the snobbery has kept the scene decent, and its when the snobbery is overwritten that you get a scene not worth having, I take it you would prefer a scene full of passers by that wont hang around? As Dan said on another thread (sortof, excuse me for paraphrasing you Dan) we dont think we are better than non soul fans, we know. Jock
  18. Pete-S dictionary says a soul snob is anyone who expects a soul record to sound remotely soulful, allegedly. Oops forgot to add George Lemons for a record that I hate but seems to be popular with some people with otherwise good taste. Jock
  19. Are you actually saying that you think the criticism is not valid for this film, and if so are you saying people shouldnt't criticise? I for one am glad on all the crits as it stopped me buying it.
  20. As everyone says Bleeker St easy hit, although expensive. New music harder, I couldnt find any of the new cd's there, for house vinyl dance trax is a must but again expensive,
  21. Probably worth mentioning Roger the rest of the Cd is absolutely terrible, although agree that track is very nice. If I remember rightly the cd features a Debbie Dobbins singing, assume the same that had some horrible 80's things played back in the day, if so she looks like she sings Cheers Jock
  22. My tounge was firmly in Petes cheek on that one, although looks like he saw right through me again. I just love the soul police references, classic. On your more serious point I was there, went to Wigan most Saturdays from early 79, hence my slightly cheek point of saying thats when it got good again, so was there pretty much through the "bad days", also went to Clifton Hall (spoke to you a few times there but I was slimmer and less grumpy then) regularly for a good while and some of the other places you have mentioned on other threads Rebels etc. I was being sarcastic again about the returnees in 1979 ! Not very well obviously Cheers Jock
  23. Sorry Shane still thinking of your original question aout why sounds now dont get associated with venues (partly coz I never go out enough to know what sounds are played now ) but its question that interests me reading things on here. A lot of the Wigan/Stafford/Mecca type association I think is because in general people went to the same venue week in week out, this allowed djs to persevere with records etc so easier to break and also for people to associate with venue. Today it must be a nightmare, particularly with so many local dos going on, I assume different crowds go to many of these dos (with the exception of the few on here that seem to go everywhere )even Butch must have to vary his set slightly when playing different venues. Think Dans points about familiarity are spot on also. Really interesting topic, even if I have strayed a bit off current point. Cheers Jock
  24. The old soul police had stopped going in 1977 because the music was so bad, they didnt return until 1979, along with the then new breed of soul police, younger and even hungrier for decent music, when it became a soul scene again. Am sure I read this in the In Crowd somewhere. Cheers Jock
  25. Not sure I should speak to you Mr Smith after the trouble you caused on the George Hobson misunderstanding But I will, hello tony hello Mark, now goodnight you two!!
