  1. Sorry should have rephrased that, its probably very well sung if you like that sort of thing, orchestration is probably very tight if you like that sort of thing, drumming probably very solid if you like that sort of thing, only problem for me is it has got nothing at all to do with soul music, IMVHO of course., Cheers Jock
  2. Having only heard this on some reissue 45 I think, assume its the same record but my first thought was that this is a truly horrible record (the You Girl side), when and where was this played, thankfully I was at home with carpet slippers that night!! Cheers Jock PS hopefully this is not against thread, not normally one to post negative but I was really truly shocked when I finally heard this record am wondering if I need to try and hear it again.
  3. Just listening to the few albums I have by him, listening to old favorites like Jealous Love, She's Looking Good, I'm Gonna Cry, Trust Me and For Better of Worse, man was a real talent, in top tier of soul vocalists surely. Also found on album something I can't remember from before, his great version of Bring It On HomeTo Me, brilliant double tracked vocals, not his screaming voice just soulful as hell. Even sort of like his bizarre half Italian half English song Deborah.Maybe thats just nostalgia making me think that. On another site somebody accused soul fans of overlooking the well known for obscurity sometimes in Pickets case and I suppose us Northern fans are doubly guilty of this and listening to Picket you realise sometime the cream did rise to the top, Just off to listen to his Don't Knock My Love lp, can't remember ever listening to it so hopefully a nice way to rediscover and remember him RIP Wilson. Cheers Jock
  4. Try Rob Grant mate, he may have stuff like this, he is on here but cant remember his ID mailto:robgrant@blueyonder.co.uk
  5. A clue, look for the one most damning and you will see him hiding, BlackWhite gave a bigger clue. Cmon Stuart out you come or I will scan in pages from Hamden Babylon to embarass you!! Cheers Jock
  6. Ady shame on you, you missed the chance for a plug for Kent product. Even more surprising than the omission of Mr Womack must be James Carr, so soulful it hurts especially now we so much know more about how painful his life was. I am going to play all 3 of the excellent James Carr cds I have on Kent (any commission payable in cd's Ady!!) Cheers Jock
  7. Why don't you ask him, think you will find he is on here under a football related user ID Cheers Jock
  8. I have just dug out the cd and it only credits Sean Oliver as writer, no sample credited. Don't recognise it as a sample but it is very similar style used in early 90's records, Driza Bone, Sue Challoner etc., seems to be a very popular style around some Modern rooms!! Cheers Jock
  9. Find this an amusing topic, one thing I liked about the Northern Scene was celebrity didn't matter, some dj's generally might have thought different but again on the more underground days they wouldn't have got away with acting like a celebrity. To me the more celebrities you have on the scene it shows how diluted the scene is since very few of these celebritities stick around once its not so trendy. More interesting are people who were on the scene before becoming celebrity and have kept connections, one such chap has recently joined us on SS, probably more a celebrity in Scottish football circles today but an all round good egg! Won't name him in case he blushes but will say his finest moment was his article for NME about Glenrothes All-Nighter Cheers Jock
  10. Back in the bad old days of the 80's at Bilston All Nighter (ex-mining village to cross reference to the political topic I am going nowhere near ) Butch danced to about 3 records in a row during my spot, which made me feel great as it was one of my first main spots to a non-local crowd, I was feeling fairly chuffed until Butch went on after me (for one of his first big allnighter spots I would suggest) and proceeded to deflate me totally as I listened to his choice of music and realised my 60 minutes paled into insignificance!! General point is in the 80's most dj's danced, Guy H is one of the best and most co-ordinated dancers around, surely no coincidence that before and after these days, when the scene is much bigger very few dj's dance, Would suggest that may be a lot to the self perception of many of these djs! Cheers Jock

    Ivor Jones

Remember that well, Sam was one of those responsible at that time also, still could be worse, they could have reactivated the other big cover that got plays around that time, Angela Clemmons - Give Me Just A Little More Time, played around the same time I think, truly awful. I only own them both (honest) because they were all around the place for 10p in second hand shops!! Cheers Jock
  12. Finally got round to getting this, great track. well worth a buy before Sam single handledly saves the Modern scene with this track!! Cheers Jock
  13. Best wishes to all, hope to get out at least once next year and hear some new (to me!) music, have a good one whereever you are!! Cheers Jock
  14. Agreed, great memories of my early days at Clouds, Edinburgh, watching Jolly throw himself round the dance floor to that, I thought I will dance as well as that one day (although I never quite managed as my fellow countryman will no doubt point out to me ) Big Wheels of Motown compilation really started my Northern interest and have always had a soft spot for it, thing is take all these genres that are on the Northern scene these days, and you will find an example of it on Motown, but for the standard 4/4 classic sound it can't be beaten. Said on last thread that isley Bros - TOHOM is the Magnetics of Motown, may not be rare in quantity but very rare in quality. Is it just my imagination or do most of the uptempo Motown sounds have a unique vocal style, where the vocalist barely takes a breath and the lyrics are almost spat out continuously, something I noticed but never get round to comparing!! Cheers Jock
  15. Flip it over and listen to the b-side, awesome also, think that hints at album quality but never been able to pick it up. keep meaning to look a bit harder! I think they later became New Birth. OOps should have read Chalkies note first, as ever fully informed. Cheers Jock
  16. Bobby Militello, on 12" and album, album title is actually Rick James feat Bobby M, track Let Stay Together feats Jean Carn on vocals, nice but nothing earth shattering will try and do a soundclip if interested, long time since I listened but I think there is one other half decent vocal rest fairly standard fusion instrumentals (a forerunner of that horrific smooth jazz genre maybe!!) Cheers Jock
  17. That would have been Mr Steve Walls c/o Glenrothes, think it was definitely 80's as he had for a few years before being uncovered, can't remember if it was Soul Bowl though. Cheers Jock PS Ted not forgotten the cd, just been really busy with work, will get it to you next week at latest.
  18. Oii thats just the West Side of my beloved country , and its Buckfast not Eldorado Scots are a little more sophisticated in their palates you know, just as well I can't make Orwell or I would have to bring you some Buckfast as a treat!!!
  19. I think Dave means the Marty Thompson one, which may have been Ion not Keb, truly awful record, although not as bad as the one that gets my vote - Raven Mads _ Where Is Love (I think), possibly the worst record I have heard!! Cheers Jock PS Just shows how different tastes are, Bobby Addams has always been one of my all time faves, maybe of its time a little, anyone got a sound clip I could trip down memory lane too?
  20. Because I have a same sided demo, however went onto the old album shelf and found it there (interestingly they are on different albums) Security is very nice Johhno, never picked that up before but like Smile better I am afraid, reminded me of other track in album which I think is better than both, Wheel Of Life great tune, anyone know if that came out on 45?? Cheers Jock
  21. As I sit pondering whether I will ever get out to soul event this year and feeling sorry for myself (allowable as a bloke) put some tunes on to cheers up Went for some gruff bloke stuff Circle Of Fire - Have It Your Way Little Milton - Let Me Back In Rance Allen - Smile Neil Kimble - Ain't It The Truth (record just lifts my spirits) Jerry Butler/Theresa Davis - I Just Cant Stop And 2 girlie things to have me skipping around my temporary dance floor a.k.a. my kitchen Ruby Winters - We're Living to Give and Sweetheart Things. Ahh isn't our music wonderful!! Cheers Jock
  22. You off course know Keb was really Eton educated and in real life speaks like he has marbles in his mouth, his ranting swearing Scottish dialect is just for his public image and djing, getting him ready to return triumphant to Scotland as First Minister when his beloved Scottish National Socialist combination get in (which thankfully is highly unlikely, the party getting in that is not Keb returning obviously!!) Aww right Keb, long time no see (or hear!) hope you are well. Jock O'Connor
  23. I used to have this, according to Dean Anderson it's dead rare (or was in the 80's, appreciate things are often a bit more available now) really nice, if early record, and she does have a pitch to her voice similar to Tobi Lark but would it not be too early to be her, also have people not contacted Tobi Lark before? Any idea of value on this nowadays, have been looking (although I'm no longer the record bloodhound I was) for this since I sold it and not seen another one. Cheers Jock PS Yes Dean if you are reading I know you also used to say I obtained your copy by foul means, my lawyer says beat it
