Hmm does it have to be deep to hurt, but agree Sean, great choice. Know its been mentioned before by Mr Jack of Brighton but in this vain the favorite by a mile must be Kim Tolliver _ Where Were You full 12" version, that hurts due to sheer soulfulness but also the subject matter just fits and it makes her sadness a physical living thing for the duration of this record! 2 listening to lots at moment are Mike Jemison - You Make Me Feel The Way You Do (?) 12" and Garfield Fleming - Lets Turn In Early, have chased these since mid 80's and only recent got them, in all honesty they are not as good as I remembered (are they ever), certainly not the holy grail of slowies as I had made them in my own mind but still 2 very fine honest to goodness examples of proper soul music. Interesting aside No 1 - just realised pretty sure I have Barret Strong doing the Mike Jemison number, just cant remember where or what medium I have it!! Interesting Aside No 2 - having been chasing the Mike Jemison no and a couple of knoweldgeable guys on RSF confirming its a hard one, got it on ebay for a fiver and the same seller listed (and relisted twice more) with no takers, incredible. The Kim Tolliver also went through with no takers, recently. Double incredible. Cheers Jock

Yes but Saint Johnstone programmes are in demand in some of the more rural areas, and I think you might want to explain who Garry O'Connor is as most on here will probably never have heard of him......... yet. The next Joe Jordan I say but then I am a Hibs fan so.. Is this informed inside info or just BBC gossip (Assume it can't be Channel 4 gossip as it wouldn't be sophisticated enough!) Cheers Jock O'Connor (only a very distant relation, allegedly!)

Agree with this Gareth, it's actually astounded me that the quality of some of the records in here are far better than the ones being touted in the forgotten oldies!! Maybe my taste is just different. And to be more controversial would name a new contendor for worst soul record (excepting Goerge Lemons but we have done that to death) as Wendell Watts - You Girl, finally found the Grapevine cd with it on, an otherwise great cd, and now believe my original judgement was correct, not an ounce of soul, or is it just me... Jock PS Good to meet you at Lifeline Gareth, apologies for not being too chatty, not my usual, a bit tired and emotional, all Tony Smiths fault, will definitely have a beer and chat next time.Have you seen the rest of the soul train footage? Forget what site its on, some of it very good.

Which 'pop' Tunes Would You Like To Hear Played Again?
jocko replied to a topic in All About the SOUL
Thats American standards of irony. It used to be acceptable to send small children up chimneys for no pay or impale your neighbour due to a dispute over a farthing, times have moved on! I retire to my dark urine stained corner hugging my picture of OV Wright muttering dementedly why did we bother including the word soul!! Jock -
I have a spare of Tyrone Barkley if you wish, but have no idea of current value, would rather do a swap if you have something you want to trade for it, might even have a spare of the Dramatics, I will have a look for you. Cheers Jock

Yeah fair point. Tangent slightly but was Watty the big guy in exploited? If so he worked in a record shop in Edinburgh for years, I nearly got lynched in there as somebody told me in my young days that you get some decent records in there, walked in day after Clouds allnighter with 40" bags on (only time I wore them, couldn't believe how bad they looked) to find loads of mohicaned gentleman giving me a fixed stare. Try runnning in said bags, not easy!! Cheers Jock

Only as much as it has to sound like a crossover record to actually be a crossover record, I have said for ages too much genrification is bad for the scene but with your Tony Galla confusion I am changing my mind, I hope Ady has told you what a Northern Soul record is before Saturday!! Yours mischievously Jock

I am sure there is evidence of it much further back, Last Poets would precede him would they not, although probably both more inspiring rap/hip hop than recording it in peoples eyes. Something never could get round but last few years or so have really broadened out my listening and the decent hip-hop stuff is excellent, Common, Twalib Kweli and The Roots recently producing very soulful (not in the literal singing sense you understand) stuff and no gangster stuff within a mile of them. Not stuff I listen to daily but more and more over recent months. Back to the broader point we are getting old, agree that the majority, especially the stuff the media covers is awful and disrespectful, and the kids imitating it are scary, if a little sad, however sure they said the same when some of you were running around with your safety pins and Vivienne Westwood ripped shirts Cheers Jock

Hi Pete, Jock O'Connor here, long long time no see hope you are well down in what seems to becoming an area for retired soulies Take care Jock

I have over 70 Loma and they are pretty much all Soul, a few borderline!!! Not sure where it started, some great stuff on there as well. Did buy a couple I didn't know for a few pounds and one ws C&W the other American Rock so think I will stop there. Have most Fee and a fair few Venture that I keep thinking should complete, f*** knows why, one of those strange collecting urges that we can't fight! Cheers Jock

Interesting point Mark, and one that so many in todays scene seem to miss (with my grumpy old head on again), to me this is just a great record and the cheaper the better as I can then have one, as you say the confusion between rarity and quality gets scary at times. I would love to own rare tunes but would rather have 1000 outstanding tunes than 100 "dog rare"" tunes. Glad to see there are at least some other people out there who think like that!!! Jock

Glad to see its the Scot that talks sense, as a bitter old cynic Dave it's really refreshing to read the above, I think what you are saying is you are a soul fan who happens to dj, whereas the other person is an egotist who happens to think he can be a dj by playing soul, apologies if a bit direct but sometimes what I read on here makes me shake my old head in despair, Back to the old peoples home and the appropriate medicine!! Nice one Andy, so you were listening to some of those things I played you back in 1828!! Another Ady H tip!! Okay no more mentions of this till I get one! How did I forget this Steve, the original crossover record!! Chased this for loads of years and on my only trip to Orwell very nice man from Stoke had one very reasonable, outstanding record, ready for a revival?? Think the concensus is Buddy Ace is one top singer!! Cheers Jock
-
Thats the one, cracking record, good price too as it was about that back in the 80's might treat myself to one next week, assuming not beatend by someone else seeing this! Cheers Jock PS And no changing the price John now that it's been named!
-
Not just RnB, has a great 80's track which I have forgotten the title of, great record that have always meant to pick up, any one remember title label and what is current value?? Cheers Jock PS Agree about True Love, top record, old Ady Harley tip, one of the many 1000's he put me on to.

I am sure Steve G will tell better but it was a UK label, 80's, from Sheffield possibly but not anming names in case I get it wrong and end up with a letter from a Sheffield lawyer, mostly reissue if I remember rightly although they did a couple of good compilation albums, and released things like Controllers and other Jauna stuff. I have a few lp's on the label but couldn't find them at first glance, will try and dig some out later and post up lists. Cheers Jock
-
I think where Steve is coming from is I seem to remember a cd coming out a few years back by a name along the lines of Phillip James (not the same as the blue buster obviously as a fairly young chap) who was reputedly the son of Phil Flowers. Seem to remember a fairly decent cd, if Roger Williams is outside looking here he may remember more accurate details. Cheers Jock

Definitely strings for hire Shane, I think most were serious musicians that made their lving by doing pop (i.e. soul in the 60's/70's) music, particularly the 70's Philly releases, almost always the same names on every album Look no further for one of the biggest names from 60's till today than Larry Gold, he actually released a fantastic cd a couple o years ago of very contemporary soul music! Cheers Jock PS Apologies if was a bit quiet when we spoke last week, was suffering 2nd night burnout, I am not normally known for being quite as most people will tell you!
-
Not if she has got any taste she won't, nobody but you and Kittys mother would like that pile of dog poo, Hope you are impressed, just in from a 14 hour turn at work and finishing your last cd!! You are definitely going to have keep me in the Elaine and Natalie free zone, and if you grass me up I will blame you for saying it, you know they always believe me!! CANT FUCKING WAIT!! Gnight Jock
-
Val we either have very similar record collections or you are making your cd's in my flat (no on second thoughts I have all the same cheapies as you, I just don't have the same rarities as you do!!) Burn one up for me and bring it along, I havent heard the exportations and want ed summers on cd and I will throw in a couple of 80's boogie cd's I did for on here, a bit more electro, okay a lot more electro, based than above I should warn you but you can try them and see. Thats 7 and counting, see I eventually come good!! Cheers Jock See you

His Way With The Girls - Sparkly Dresses Time
jocko replied to Mark Bicknell's topic in All About the SOUL
Was it not the other side of this, the instrumental that was played, Keb cover up if remember rightly, I had this for a good few years but never really got the vocal side, also gave it away as it wasn't worth pennies in the 80's, seems to have had a jump since then!! Cheers Jock, PS Edwin mines also used to have the don't draft me scratched in, -
I think the TSU Tornados probably classed as crossover now, I did play it out quite a bit back in the 80's, lots of people said it was great but about only about 3 people ever danced Cheers Jock

Another ebay chancer me thinks, just won a great little cheapie from USA all of $3.75 and get the invoice for $13 postage. Now its probably still a slight (very) bargain at this price, but also a great record (will post up when I get it to see if it qualifies as a pop stomper). However, my principals say he is chancing it, know this has been discussed before (tried a search but couldn't get anything) so was just wondering what advice was, my plan was a polite question on how he works this charge out, on item it just said overseas will be advised, so really should have checked in advance. Cheers Jock

Having been dabbling on ebay recently, damn addictive that place, these 3 pop stompers arrived through my door, most expensive being 5.99, God bless ebay Keni Burke - Changes LP Carl Anderson - Protocol LP (have bought this at least twice in the past and just can't find it) Richard C - So Hard To Make It 7" (Anyone remember this, great vocals over a cracking 80's beat!) Am waiting on a nice package of brand new release cd's but not sure if they are of interest here !! Cheers Jock

I would do a bit more research on your facts mate, thats about as accurate as your average Sun headline.
