What the f**k has that got to do with anything, one of the most ridiculous statements on here on 2 counts. Im an inverted racist because I like my soul music to be soulful, f*** me. And you have to have had a ghetto life to be able to understand soul??? You are getting more bizarre by the day with your opinions, and no doubt the smily is your get out of jail clause . Watching Solomon Burke singing Somebody To Love, with my ethnic background I suppose I should only listen to The Blues Brothers. I retreat to my corner, once again bemused and bewildered, and thats without any drugs, although feel the need for a huge gin after reading this. Jock

Great taste as ever Val, used to play this at Allanton, always requested by Karen ? from Manchester, bleached blonde, looked mad but she used to cry all they way through it. A record that embodies its title! Not deep soul in its more traditional form but top of the soul tree for me this. Cheers Jock PS Val pm me your email address got a few more jazz things and let me know if you managed to suss the soul tracklists!!

Pete Lawsons funeral and Jerry Williams If You Ask Me, It summed him up in many ways and was always his record (one of!)very poignant moment. The greatest thing is whenever I hear now it I think of him so it associates the record with him completely even these years later, but I don;t think of that sad day I think of him dancing to it as he did every time it was played and it makes me smile. I am watching this from afar but do think you have hit the nail on the head, these big lads, as you call them keep going up, because everyone is chasing the same 200/300 records, and its maybe crept up slightly more than this amount of records, even in smaller scene with 3 or 4 folk continously chasing these records they shove it up to stupid prices. However I do scout around ebay and there are 1000's of other records, that aren't classed as big lads, that are not going for money at all and definitely bargains to be had, too many people now count £500 or above as a starting price for a record which even in todays world has to be absolutely madness. What I find even more madness is that some of those big lads (e.g. The Professionals, more that I can't think of at moment, which is due to my armchair status) are more played out than any Wigan oldie I can remember, Some so called progressive records (not wanting to open that up but...) have been played regularly over the last 20 years. People are just completely blinded by price. As long as there are people wanting the same records then these will go up, however, I do think what Dan said recently overall the trend is down, not cheap yet by any means, and still way overpriced, but for those with patience (and a little taste, something that seems be considered overrated in the quest for rarity) there are decent things to be picked up. Only time will tell! Jock PS Not against rarity as anyone who seen my top 5 will see but buying it because its good, semi known so cheap and it turns out to be rare surely the nirvana of all collectors?? PSS How many times has Martin Koppell sold his collection now?

Well as one of the fully paid up members of the so called soul police and very very proud of it, would like to say can't believe you like this Dan.... would like to say that but since I also think its an amazing slab of Northern (can't bring my self to add the s word on the end for this), have been known to dance to this a great number of times and spent a good year or two playing this at all my sets around the Globe (well Allanton and Edinburgh) back in the dark ages, wouldn't want to be hypocrite would I!! Quick where is my Syl Johnson LP's, retrieve my credentials!! Once I watched a tree grow, made me sleep quicker than the counting sheep alternative!

Can you go past Levi Stubbs and Marvin Junior as joint for this one, we sometimes miss the obvious because of looking for the obscure but not in their case (mostly!!) Cheers Jock
-
It is a 70's track though And Stuart, thought someone with your history would have been tipping the latest gospel dance 12" out of Washington, Bob Jones has a few magic numbers from there!! Don't tell me you have turned into one of those nostalgic sorts Cheers Jock

Forgetting titles and artists this morning, too much clean living is killing my brain cells, but Tricky Dicky in his old days was partial to a few full on sounds, before Rushbrooke took the torch. A couple or 3 from the only time period I seem to be discussing at moment (first sign of Alzheimers is forgetting the current but remembering the past, I know, my clean living even involves watching Coronation Str.) can someone remind of correct titles and artists No Second Chance - Phantom Janitor c/u (Deadbeats???) and not sure if confusing the same record. Playing The Part of A Fool - Embers c/u and Like I Never Did Before - Chessmenc/u. F**k me I cant remember these properly and I wasn't within a million miles of sand at Prestatyn or the abuse that no doubt went with it. Think I need to find a sport other than marbles!! Yours confused and confusing Jock OK think I just remembered, am I being slow, Embers Part Of A Fool is this really the Royal Esquires on Prix, if so what a Prix I am, also the Chessman wasnt that Combinations, I assume is still a super rarity, cmon somebody put me out of my misery, has my memory came back!!

Stuart tusk tusk, we made enough musical mistakes North of The Border without admitting to that one!! Surely your years of journalistic training taught you thats the kind of fact you cover up and deny all knowledge off!! Never knew the Curtis Anderson connection though, that is interesting, have your soul based NME articles hidden away somewhere in a box, obviously I just looked at the pictures at the time, you probably had too many big words for me. Whatever happened to that beautiful photographer you brought up to Fife when you were working for NME and did an article for Echoes? Think I followed her round that whole night. . Hmm thankfully that record seems to have disapeared a bit like one of your other journalistic uncoverings from then Washington Go-Go (or whatever trendy term it had) some of which I did like (although not the 75 minute rambling tracks that some favoured) . Hmm I think the only feasible connection between Hibs and Brazil (apart from our now bus driving ex player Ally) is the haircuts our young bucks favour, I do hope that we make your radio partner thoroughly miserable, if I see him I will tell you said to buy me a pie. Cheers Jock

Struggling with the quote again so go with this. Mark F, thankfully never wore a vest, however now would look like Rab C Nisbet, and even for a Scot thats not a good thing. Interesting point re playing new music at Wigan 80/81, I think it was dead easy because the crowd was so small, some Saturdays there were about 100 in and 97 of these were in Mr M's so Searling, Brady, Rushbrooke and even Winstanley to a lesser extent could play what they wanted, I remember dancing to John and The Wierdest (Spyder Turner at the time) with only 2 people on the huge dance floor, the other person being one of the most soulful guys in the world Dave Molloy. Even Keith Minshull playing mostly oldies was able to play what he wanted and some of his tunes then were amazing/ So perversely it allowed the greatest music I have been priviledged to dance to be played, but again that was then, dont want it back, would like something different but with the same impact, think that is just me being wishful. Cheers Jock PS Gavin to prove I have not turned into Mr Nostalgia agree about Giles P, seen him twice recently and absolutely garbage, last time I told him I could remember when he used to play black music and he got me thrown out!!!
-
Ehh??? Sam was filling floors in 1980/81 like no-one else??? Where about and with what, I was just a young whippersnapper at time so would be interested to know what I was missing. And I would suggest you define newies in the context you are talking about as surely no-one of sane mind could say anyone was beating Richard Searling at that time. I wait with baited breath! Jock

They are just a mixture of Dickys and Pat B' plays (well done for reminding me of Pat playing Oscar Perry, Billy Nicholls, and Reuben Howell, struggling to remember what stuff he was playing back in those days o other thread.), lack of imagination on Sam's part, even then . To be honest was part of the gang who petitioned to get Sam replaced by Gary R, partly because Gary R was a big hero as DJ (and was scared of his wife!), partly because of She Devil and Leon Peterson type stuff (anyone remember Bruce Hanning at Clouds taking She Devil of when Sam was playing it!) and don't really remember Sam playing stuff like that until later, but that would be as only went to Wigan for that couple of years, and my memory is very selective!!. And before anyone assumes I am joining the baggy vest brigade, just doing my bit for historical research and taking a bit of walk down nostalgia lane! Who was it said you must remember the past to shape the future (Me??) Cheers Jock Mr Salter you will have mail by this time tomorrow, or PM me your number and might even give you a call, if not working!
-
Hmm trying to use quote or reply on here but not working, anyone else having problems. So will have just respond from memory!! Mark should have put a nice winking smily after that comment as had a feeling thats what you were going to say. Quite interesting though as don't remember Pat playing stuff like that then, although think he might have reviewed it in Echoes, to be honest don't remember much of Pat's plays from then for some strange reason, mind I was 17 and brainless!!! Was also surprised about Sam and EL, thought that was 81 and too late for him but just checked and it was 1980 release so it must have been one of his last plays before being frogmarched down Station Road And Sherlock Mannion well remembered, it was 1981 so you are right one of Richards late plays then. And yes I am being defensive who had first plays, still enjoy that game for some very bizarrre sad reason! Oh and to get back to original point, yes its a quality record, one of Peabos better ones as I find him bit too smooooth normally. Cheers Jock

No work fu**king me up again, can't get away so you will have to have fun without me, am well cheesed off at moment.. Been buying quite a bit more jazz so PM me your email address and will get in touch on your return and do a few more. Did you manage to work out the track lists for the soul ones? I have Smile on US MCA I think, but yes another good track, Cheers Jock
-
Yes but not by Sam, Searling played Eloise Laws, Sam was still playing junk like She Devil at that point and had been removed from the Casino to be replaced by Gary Rushbrooke, sorry to burst bubbles, but think there is a bit of selective memory going on here! Cheers Jock PS Do know the Esther Williams but dont remember that from Casino ever (maybe its my memory thats selective ) And no Gavin I am not obsessed by car park, just making sure history is rewritten correctly!!\
-
Hmm definitely a Richard spin and played at that great car park, honest guv I was there. long before Clifton Hall was a twinkle in Steve Crofts eye, Gavin you know you would have been so at home at La Casino Around same time as tricky Dicky played Eloise Laws, think you need to get a better source Mr Freeman. Cheers Jock PS Was Robbie Vincent not just a Southern Searling Wanabee???

Ron Hall & The Muthafunkaz - The Way You Love Me
jocko replied to Russ Vickers's topic in Record Wants
Oops just seen this, was merely having a bit fun with you, I keep forgetting to use these smileys, thought it was hilarious that Tony gave it an honest review, pointing out its faults and you were going to use it on the web site!! Must admit though do think you are being a bit greedy as a soul dj expecting to be paid for doing all the work! I was actually agreeing with you on this one in my earlier post, don't think its always a problem at weekenders until it hits double figures for being played over one weekend, as I think this might at Prestatyn, then there should be some sort of electric shock applied to dj's as early warning Cheers Jock -
Ehh???? So its not as bad as some of the pop shite that has been played on the Northern scene but its okay in a non soul sort of way! Arent there girl group type forums you might have more success with this argument? Maybe anyone denying it likes a bit of soul with their Northern, not 100% memphis grits but just more please, and remember there is lots of cheap shit as well as rare shit so its sometimes a bit easy to use the "you don;t like it because it's not rare" card Simon. Simon normally (apart fromSWONS ) you are one of the more reasoned debaters round here but can't get your drift on this one. Truly awful record to my stuffed ears. Now pass me that bottle of gin, while I wipe away the piss stains from my comfy armchair and wait on my Morphine dealer phoning. Jock PS Am listening to Coolys Hot Box before you ask!
-
Old Ady Harley tip, he used to play it on the few times he ever dj'd back in 80's (in the good old days when collectors didn't automatically think a few records = dj's cv ) great record, try also their other lesser known, Inspiration, absolutely rip roaring vocal performance. Cheers Jock

Ron Hall & The Muthafunkaz - The Way You Love Me

It's already had its day at Cleethorpes weekender last year, should be in Prestatyn main room by now would think!! -
Hmm not one I normally do either but it suits my current mood and will get me away from doing the work I should be doing. (1) Larry Clinton - She's Wanted In 3 States, probably quoted this as my all time favorite for ever, just proper Northern Soul (2) Eddie Parker - Im Gone. Not wanting to start the soul vs Northern debate but this is just a great great soul record that you can dance to, however what a good dancer. When he spits his own name you almost feel it hitting you on the side of the face. One of the most powerful combinations of man and instruments ever. (3) Tamala Lewis -You Won't Say Nothing - Again for me just proper Northern Soul, a beat that kicks you along with those breathless vocals. (4) Magnetics - I Have A Girl Only one of the list I have ever owned, no longer and even though made about a 1000% profit! I will own it again, even if it means involving, kidnap, ransom notes and brutal violence. Just a record that makes me happy and invokes the greatest memories, what more can music do (5) Arin Demain Silent Treatment/Paris Sleepless Nights I cant and wont split them, sure there will be a double sided bootleg out there in the world to justify them together, both records remind me of a time when the pace was less important at nighters and when I was starting to really find myself in that wacky all nighter world. Could have owned both for under 50gbp and never did. There you go, an insight into Jocks View of Northern, very nostalgic and interestingly no Just Brothers (GAAL) Mello Souls or Diane Lewis, maybe I am just a big oldies fan after all. Now can't stop thinking of top 5 Non Northern records, maybe for later (should I also do a top 5 pop stompers just to prove some rumours are right!!) Okay back to the world of project plans. Cheers Jock

Spot on Gareth, well its on the flip side of the Love Is You 45 (just played that for first time in years thanks to this, still sounds great happy music to me!) so assume its on the album too. If you are still after the MJ let me know as don't think the other one sold amazingly and it was dirt cheap! Mines is on plain black but the one on e-bay recently was coloured vinyl funny enough. Thanks for the tip on Chess LP, have actually passed on that a couple of times as the normally reliable Jim O'Hara had said it wasn't great, add that to my latest ebay search, sods law it will come up when I can't afford it, if it comes up that is!! Cheers Jock

HI Brett, I have it on Vivid Japanese cd, although unusually it has very little detail, its just called Goldwax Collection vol 2 and has tracks by The Lyrics (3 tracks), Percy Milem (5 tracks) OV Wright (2 tracks) Phillip & The Faithfuls, The Vel-Tones, Gene "Bowlegs" Miller, Eddie Jefferson, (all 1 track) Timmy Thomas (3 tracks) Barbara Perry & "wee" Willie Walker 2 tracks. Had this for some time and can't remember most of the tracks to be honest, am about to give it a play!! Sean not sure I understand what you mean when you say left in the can till you started playing it off LP, surely it had to be out of the can for it to be on LP? I think a Mr Fraser Dunn who occasionally looks in here and Peter McKernan would probably have played the Willie Walker track a lot more than 10 years ago! Brett if you want copy of cd PM and will send you a copy. I believe the vinyl is pretty tough to get. Cheers Jock

Flip one over for I Just Found Out, very popular at Shotts allnighter in 1888 during the hours of 7 and 8 am, great dancer, thanks to Mr Tef for putting me onto that one many years ago!! Cheers Jock
