All great records but TLGOM is just so ahead of the rest, always thought that was potential monster (not rare enough??) reminds me a bit of Charletta - Lies in structure and great uplifting chorus, can you tell I like it Think said it before but this record made me realise I hated DJ'ing as played this to empty floor. Promptly said i wouldn't dj again (to loud cheers) and havent!!

I think it was called United, got a realease on Charly UK did it not, Ady/Tony?, and it was decent if I remember rightly, cant check as all my records are in boxes, again, for a house move this week. He was promoting it when he was on at Stafford, again I think. Cheers Jock PS all facts above are from a very tired brain so somebody may want to confirm!! I am sure its got a blue cover if thats any help

A few years ago at Poretta (actually held in Bologna if I remember rightly this particular year for some reason) soul festival, after a few beers and some sun blagged our way backstage, something I would never dream of, to speak to the Sweet Inspirations, asked who was Sylvia Shemwell, as wanted to say loved her solo single, only to be given the sad news she had a stroke and was too ill to travel, at this stage the 3 of them were looking like they were scared of these mad Englishmen (didnt get into UK geography) and they said wearily "I suppose you saw us on the Elvis video" and me and my mate at the same time said "F**k Elvis, we know you from Aretha and your solo LP's", After describing their dresses on one of their LP's they took us seriously, whooped with delight and spent an hour telling us great tales of their days on the road with a number of soul stars. Great experience. Jock

Another point is there is a great version of MDW on a Masqueraders LP, unfortunately all my records are boxed away, again, so cant check which one.

And why does nobobdy play the other side of this regardless of price?? Thought for the day Jock
-
And with a superb ballad on the other side, Mr Independant, featured on one of the early Kent albums, great slowie for those that way inclined, CHeers Jock

Hi Eddie, Great guys both of them. Giz did dissapear for a long while, as did we all in the 90's, believe he has appeared at a few things over recent years but I go out very rarely too so our paths are very unlikely to cross, pretty sure he was at the Stafford reunion though.Think he still has records, he always had good taste, but as Salmon says he was very lucky, like myself to be around the Preston/Bolton crowd whose taste were second to none. Seen Louie relatively recently (syl johnson maybe??), think he says he doesnt go out much either, pretty sure he says he still goes to Wilton and also think he will be at Cleethorpes (you may find him sleeping under a caravan ) though . great guy.He did post on here once, where art thou now Louie!! Cheers Jock

Is this the other side of Look At Me Trev, if so have it on tape somewhere, but not sure if it will be one of the 10 with tracklists or the 1000's without!! If the second wont be able to help. If it is that Colin gave it a few spins (at my frequent requests) seem to remember it being a very decent harder dancer. Not much help, sorry!! Hope you and Jo are well. Cheers Jock

I thought Bobby married Lindas mother (Sam Cookes widow) so was her step father? Very intercesting facts!! Apart from Michael who has yet to have his sex determined!
-
Not sure about what he says but he says it with some style, jeez, that almost had me dropping the gin bottle and thinking must get out that armchair one weekend, only almost!! Great record Mr C. (Steve and Ady ) A few more like that and I might even book that stage coach down to the smoke!!

Shouldn't you be on your way to Stockholm?? Hope you have fun, I am working,,,, again! And cant beleive you owned that Wendell Watts, Tony you are one of my musical inspirations you can't like that do you??? See you soon I hope, hi to Jet. Jock

Spun out by Keb many times and then Scottish jock (other one obviously), which was why my question was specifically aimed at Stevie Z and when he heard it, something tells me 10 years after it was played so a bit rich calling it an oldie now. I am in grumpy mode so just ignore me!!
-
An oldie? When did you first hear it?
-
It was certainly a long weekend, as most of them were then!! Being a Leeds sympathiser not sure i would want to be in Preston for a little while. Re Dave I bumped into him a few years ago and he sends the odd text. Still one of my top men Mr Molloy. I didnt see it but seen the advert, was too scared to look in case I ended up back in Bolton on a Monday afternoon when I was supposed to be back in Edinburgh, Happy Days!! Good to hear from you, hope you are well, Jock

I was there, it was a party Stan had thrown! Name names and we may know each other!! Tony you are now too sensible for that aren't you!! Jock O'Connor

Is this the Tony Rounce that has done the latest B&S singles review page, if so your latest reviews and pick of the week are really soulful, much more than the average house record. I assume you only review what you believe in. This is a pointless argument to me, I love house, dont really think about hearing it at an allnighter though, hearing Masters At Work playing at top of their game is a great experience but not one I expect to hear in a working mans club. There is stuff that could crossover in modern rooms but you are not going to make people like this so why even try!! I don't like agreeing with Stuart T, it really hurts, my hatred of Thatcher is only equalled by his unbelievable love for the bloodsucking vampire, but he does have a point on this argument. Roger, Lin and Mark R thought you would have known better than to try! I am off in search of that unissued Arnold Jarvis acetate!! Cheers Jock
-
Thats it, I give in. The other side was a huge chart hit was it not, the MFP album is probably much rarer!!

SHould still be able to get Was A Bee on the Schema (the record label its on) website, only issue is they hardly ever answer their emails! Can't remember address but should google easy. You can get it on a great Jazz compilation cd (Freedom Dance) if you dont mind the small silver things! Cheers Jock

You still didn't answer Franks question about naming a specific terrorist act committed by the Black Panthers? While the above book is excellent and meets its objective of putting the music in context against the political climate of the time it is hardly an oracle of the civil rights history. While I would not pretend to be an expert I would suggest you need to consider the alternative theory that many terrorist acts were committed by, or paid for, by men in uniform. As for the connection of soul and politics (not your quote I know) I would suggest again this is where people with an interest in general soul rather than just Northern (thats not meant as a dig) would surely at least have had an interest in the politics of the time as it inspired so much of the music, in direct and indirect ways. I must admit I am not particularly good at reading history but have read a fair number of books on American politics of the time purely as result of my interest in the music and would like to think this has in turn shaped my personal politics. Wow, interesting, jeez how good does Mr Wells sound now, sort of written that off as a wouldn't care if I didn't hear it again but it sounded great there. Interesting contrast in style to other side. Cheers Jock

Old Barry Waddington discovery I think (one of the many!) and played by the vastly underrated Mr Ioin Tsakalis, many moons ago. Not sure if he was first however for those that like to know that (or am I the only one!!) Cheers Jock
-
Decentish doo wop influenced item, warms up okay. Can't make up my mind if its an early recording or a throwback type recording. Going to tell us who? Cheers Jock
-
Like somebody else said, don't normally comment but since you seem to keen to hear from people listening, its absolutely awful, even with your pop hat on you surely can't like this. Sounds like it was recorded on one of those karaoke machines, sometime last week, oops sorry wrong thread Cheers Jock

Okay this is now my favorite post on here! Eloquent but emotional words, just like some of the greatest soul songs!! Cheers Jock

Stuart that move away from Elgin obviously did you proud, most of the above is exactly what you would expect of a Channelf 4 exec who is really an educated wannabee football thug (copyright NOTW) and wanabee radio star!! It is also one of the best and most on the point posts I have read on here, particularly your last line, I might not really like what people associate with Northern Soul now but I will fight (in a girly non violent sort of way) to defend what it was. Dave Godin, I think, politicised in the correct way that wonderful scene of its time and gave it a name. I would like some of his critics to be more specific on what they are criticising him for. The absurd genrification of this scene and the petty politicking of today has no relevance to him naming the scene. And I am no blind defender of Dave Godin, no doubt some of his views I disagreed with and some of his musical taste I found a bit weak (only some before Ady jumps on me). However he was an icon of the British soul scene, full stop. Dave second time I agree with you, spot on, for one so young and ugly (according to other people on the Scots scene since we have not yet met) I think that is a great observation. At the end of the day, people like Dave Godin are easy to knock but I think he is and should be recognised as a special person, a human with flaws. Pick up those stones those who have no flaws!!
