  1. From that I take it you'll also tell me you'll be supporting England tomorrow as well then
  2. Am sorting through a mates records and hes got this on a Wand demo. Any info on whether or not was booted and present value would be appreciated. Its not mentioned In J.Manships bootleg guide. Thanks
  3. Been sorting through some records for a mate and he's got a double sided Revue demo of this. Has it ever been booted and what would an orig be worth? Cheers
  4. Back to the original question, saw one go on Ebay recently for $169
  5. Early doors in Mansfield is the same Gaz, last sat of month run by Steve Studge, can you remember him?
  6. Been digging through some old stuff and came across Bee Kays - Its Better/Eric the Viking ( Gamble ) Got this in a soul pack ages ago - spun the A side, thought it was poo and promptly put it away never to see the light of day for many years. So I was surprised to see it on JM's site for £40 but the sound clip is the B side. So my questions are - Has this ever been played? Does anyone rate it? Would you pay £40 for it?
  7. I happened to be round at my mate Steve's and read thru the mansfield&notts...links whilst playing some tunes. I remember all the places but not the faces without further id. Markmtfc? Mandtleeds? Hungdinger? Time was when everyone had a regular name or you just put a 'y' at the end - there's a number of djs, esp the local lads who have made this an art form recently. As for venues, old and new, I did go to The Frobisher to see Jackie Ross and the brilliant Syl Johnson as a quick follow up to Prestatyn, whilst the adrenalin was still flowing after a great weekend. I get around as often as poss, still checking out both local nites and niters. Best ones lately have been Prestwich, a typical North West scene and Lowton (ditto). As for closer to home, Forest Town is a good night but that may be due to the social as well as the music quotient. Allniters are still where it's at for me, and long may they continue. Of the older venues, there doesn't seem to have been any mention of Sunday nights at The Robin Hood (Summer Bar) and just down the road, upstairs at The Dukeries. Both of these were run be Dukeries soul Club as well as their irregular Friday sessions at Edwinstowe MW. Most people at this time would go anywhere and dance to most of what was played as at The Swan in Mansfield' (up to late 75) but there was a real split locally sometime later as older (i.e. about 21!) soulies deserted the scene for a few years or more until the emergence of Mondays at The Eight Bells when Searling would try out all his new sounds, fresh out of Soul Bowl, (sometimes earlier the same day). The differences were similar both in what was played and the crowds at Wigan and Cleethorpes (Pier) a few years earlier. Didn't mean to write so much but 'The Moving Finger Writes and having written, it moves on...' Garry Churm (Churmy), Gaz, Gazza,...
  8. Thanks for that, I suppose that there is a difference between the record knocking about in peoples collections and being widely known by the majority of people attending nighters. So a slightly different question - would the drifter have been a record known to the majority at the torch? Come on all you veterans out there did you know it back then? Or even later say mid 70s, I think I first remember it from around 81/82 having been on the scene since 74
  9. Years ago I used to pigeon hole sounds as to when they were discovered/first played (wheel, torch, early/late wigan, cleethorpes etc) as I suppose alot of people do. As time went on I realised I didnt know as much as I thought I did and was wrong in a lot of cases. Recently someone told me that Ray Pollard - The Drifter was played at the Torch which surprised me, can anyone confirm?
  10. Garry is living in Nottingham and working as a teacher after living in Canterbury for a few years. Hes still out and about all over the place, was with him at Prestatyn. Come on you Stags!
  11. Gaz, I used to play football with Steve Wilson when I was about 7 or 8 on the pitches at the top of Armstrong Road. Last saw him a few years ago at the Early Doors although I've heard him a few times since cos he used to regularly ring up the football phone in on radio Mansfield to talk about the Stags. I think he still lives on Ladybrook but cant help you out any more than that. He might still go to the Early doors, not sure as I havent been for a long time. Which teachers at QEGS?, Trum, Nag Horsefield, Bruiser?, starting to have a cold sweat thinking about it! Im an OE myself was there 72-77 Also a veteran of the Folkhouse which is where I got my grounding in northern from 74 on - had some great times there.
  12. Heretical is absolutely right Theres no way on planet earth that a man and a woman should be seen dancing to a northern record together!
  13. OK heres a few questions for any of you out there who might be of the beer towel brigade: Why would a grown man in his mid 40s want to go out dressed like he did when he was 17? Why would anyone want to go around adorned with badges proclaiming "I AM INTO NORTHERN SOUL" ? Is it some kind of insecurity as to your identity as a person? If I conducted a survey of the above mentioned people to ascertain their top 10 records of all time, would any of the records be outside of the bracket of the top sounds of 73,74 & 75? Would any of you know what Searling's top sounds of 1979 were? Do you even realise that there was a scene between 76 and 96? Do you know any records that were played during this period? Are you interested in listening to / discovering new sounds? OR would you just prefer to dance/listen to to Salvadors, Williams & Watson, Tomangoes etc for ever more? Any rational/logical answers to the above questions would be appreciated, if not dont bother. PS if anyone is offended by the above, this message board is about opinions and you can guess mine from this post. Merry Christmas
  14. Brian are you honestly saying that you think a 45 year old bloke wearing a vest with bagdes sewn all over it and baggy trousers with a beer towel stuffed in the waistband ( ie what he used to wear when he was 17 )has got STYLE? If so you need therapy
  15. At the risk of sounding a bit thick can someone explain how to use this paypay thingy. Never used it before Willing to pay up but dont know how
  16. Winnie If I were stood next to you at the bar at my local soul night, would I be forcing my beer down your throat? No? I didnt think so
  17. Put me down
  18. You might be struggling there Andy, I believe he's in Phoenix Arizona. I've e-mailed him a few times but never had a reply, bit of an enigma to me. Agree with previous sentiments, it would be a massive blow to me if it went.
  19. "apoplectic" ie in a state of apoplexy, liable to fits of red-faced rage - in other words f**kin steamin'! Hence very appropriate smilie
  20. Met up to go to Wigan one night and there were 6 of us and a ford escort, one of the lads went there and back in the boot! ( about 5 hours in total )
  21. Magnetics - Lady In Green
  22. Carl ( Piper ) is from Mansfield and runs a local soul night at Kingsway Hall in Forest Town, hes about 47ish but is as fit now as he was when he was 18!
