  1. They can go and have fun at their local karaoke night or wherever they want to but this at a "northern" event? This is the very antithesis of what the scene is about. As mentioned previously can you remember the cool underground scene that we all got into? The one that divs knew nothing about? Another example of the dilution of things to the lowest common denominator to attract the maximum numbers and therefore maximum profit. PS I used to think Richard Searling was god

  5. They don't, unless people pay it - I wouldnt
  6. Absolutely nothing to be embarrassed about , its nearly 20 years since I got fed up with hearing the same oldies everywhere and started actively seeking out records that I didnt know. First through getting tapes and later cd's off people and later when the internet came along sites such a soulclub. After all this time I still hear new records virtually every week and the thrill is still there. Looking forward to old age and alzheimers so I can hear the Salvadors and the Tomangos for the first time again
  7. An issue is fine but I agree with Pikey, £25 is too much to pay for this. Mick start at the low end and see how you go, there are some ridiculous prices about that you dont always need to pay for records. I reckon ebay is the best place to start for a beginner, with the most reasonable prices, just make sure you check sellers feedback and you shouldnt have too many problems. Best to avoid the major dealers at first as well until you gain some experience as their prices are usually on another planet to us mere mortals. Plenty of decent people on here to ask for advice as well who will share their experience with you, dont be afraid to ask- such as Pete S and others who have vast knowledge and dont like tpo see people ripped off
  8. Somewhere between £3 - £3.50 Steve
  9. Someone played this at the last Kings Hall, first time I've heard it for many a year!
  10. I dont think we're talking about the same thing here. The all dayers of Blackpool? what's that? weekly venues in bars, pubs and clubs? You got any examples so I know what you're talking about? I'm talking about the rare soul scene, all nighters and everything that goes with it.
  11. Dont worry mate, me and the lads I knock around with have plenty of fun and very rarely fail to enjoy ourselves
  12. Coming generations can obtain and listen to this music easily on CD, bootleg vinyl, legitimate reissue vinyl such as Kent, mp3 etc etc and listen to their hearts content at home or wherever. What they CANT or shouldn't be able to do is DJ at a serious soul event with them. You seem to perceive that all these youngsters who "might" come on to the scene are going to be DJ's ? How's that gonna work? There are actually quite a lot of good young DJ's around the country playing good original records anyway. To answer the second part of your post, the scene is a rare soul scene, an underground scene where music is played that any Tom, Dick or Harry at your local disco hasn't got access to or even knows exists. That is the ethos that the whole thing was based on from day 1, and that's why some of the records are expensive - because they're rare!! Note I said some, because there are 100's of cheap original records out there that any aspiring young DJ could cut his teeth on.
  13. Er, did we get 50 key landmark moments? Any volunteers to summarise and put in chronological order?
  14. If young kids coming onto the scene are told that its ok to DJ with bootlegs then the future of the scene isnt gonna be too bright really. It would be like playing Vinnie Jones in Barcelona's midfield and Guardiola telling him to get out there and kick the sh*t out of everyone. In other words devaluing a thing of beauty and substance. There nothing to stop young uns coming in and enjoying themselves, but if they want to get in the first team they'll have to be able to pass like Iniesta & Xavi
  15. Sold all mine that I'd had from the 70s a few years ago and haven't really regretted it. Having an original 1960s pressed record in my hands means much more than the nostalgia associated with the old bootlegs even though I had em for 30 years. I've managed to replace some with originals but it wont be possible to replace them all (Tomangos, Salvadors etc) unless I win the lotto!
  16. Kev you're a pedant, stop being pedantic and then pedantry will cease to emanate from your posts! Didn't they teach you owt at Ashfield comp?
  17. Like Pete I havent heard Who Am I played out in 37 years (not that I can remember anyway) Like all discussions of this type it all depends on where you've been/go and when Both sides are masterpieces to me
  18. Sam Bowie and the Blue Feelings - (Think Of) The Times We Had Together If that doesn't jerk a few tears I dont know what will
  19. you're well shut of him duck
  20. Sam played this in both rooms at Stoke on Sat night, not sure what the oldies crowd made of it
  21. Your mate's a DJ?? Is he a Northern Soul DJ? What is a Northern Soul DJ?
  22. 1995(ish) Lots of 30 somethings start returning to the scene after 20 years away doing domestic things. Most of these have no idea that there was a scene between 1975-95 while they were away and consequently dismiss this period totally. Only wishing to hear records that they can remember from 1975 thereby resulting in the stagnation seen at the majority of venues for evermore hereafter. Thats not a dig by the way before anyone says, just following Mikes instruction- date, event, reason ( significance for the scene) Not intended to start any sub-debate
  23. 1978/9 Richard Searling starts playing his famous new batch of quality big sounds ( Cecil Washington etc) Thereby steering the scene away from the pop dross that threatened to drown it in a sea of mediocrity and setting the foundations for Stafford etc that was to follow.
