  1. I was reading through this thread and it got me wondering about some of the other compilation albums I've got. I've never been a serious collector (as some of the titles below might show) but I was just curious as to the collectability of them even if its just for novelty purposes: Out on the Floor Tonight (Inferno 001) featuring Dobie Gray, Frank Beverley, The Cairstairs, Four Perfections etc. Keeping the Faith Vol.2 (PRC5573) featuring Joy Lovejoy, Mitch Ryder, Casualeers and sleeve notes by Tilly Rutherford (one time associate of Pete Waterman?) Chess/Janus Mobile Discotheque Vol.1(6310 128) featuring Denise Lasalle, Fontella Bass, Soulful Strings, Tony Clarke etc. The Best of Northern Tracks (Spark SRLM 502) featuring Tommy Hunt, Gene Latter, Wigans Ovation??) Stax Northern Disco Sounds(PYE label with STXB3002 number) featuring sleeve note by DJ Frank(Ian Dewhirst) and tunes by William Bell,Johnny Taylor, Major Lance etc. I also have some of the first releases of albums under the Kent label from the 6T's/100Club crew(For Dancers Only, For Dancers Also, Moving On Up). If anybody can shed any light that would be great. Thanks.
  2. I knew somebody would come up with the answer, thanks, these memory lapses can do your head in.
  3. Don't know about best or worst, but a tune I always associate with Soul Sam is Over The Top by Roy Dawson (if I remember correctly it was covered up as something else but i can't remember what). It always reminds me of Sundays at Birmingham Locarno, whenever Sam was on this guy would appear out of the dark and scary Bali Hai room and start doing his thing, usually to just one or two records but it always included Over the Top. Loved the tune then love it now.
  4. It was on a Wednesday night. I used to go with a crowd from Kingswinford/Pensnett. I remeber it as being a good night with some good music played.
  5. How about Happy by Velvet Hammer? Unmistakable when it starts, slightly over time at 35 secs, but that drum thumping will get your mobile vibrating no problem!!!!!
  6. Just browsing through this thread, I remember going to an all nighter on several occasions at a place near Wellington station called The Gemini Club ( at least that's what the badge on the inside lid of my record box says), I think one of the DJ's may have been called Mitch. I knew a girl from Madeley/Dawley called Liz, but she seemed to hang around with a crowd from Wednesbury/West Bromwich who I knew quite well, some of the names: Chris(never knew his surname), Joy, Kim, Cliff(who seemed to be about ten feet tall, liked a dance and when he clapped it was like a crack of thunder!). I was a shy type so never really went round talking to folks, but I remember the first few of the nights at the Wellington club were well attended but then fell dramatically, I think the last one I went to there were about ten people and the DJ fell asleep at the decks!!!
  7. Stomping, lolloping whatever its called I could never do it either and its always bugged me that I can't. I've learnt to waltz, quickstep, foxtrot, but never stomp, so if someone on here knows a very good instruction video or written description of how to do said moves I'd be very grateful.
  8. Watched Jools Holland on Friday night, thought Solange and her backing singers were good but Eli was better, very Percy Sledge-ish?
  9. Tainted Love, The Snake, Ghost in my house. But it was enough to make you want to look/listen further.
  10. I've looked through this thread and it just has to be different strokes for different folks. We all have our own circumstances, I empathise with the two people who have kids with special needs, my son was severly disabled and during his 19 years on earth I only managed to get to 2 local soul nights. I would like to start going out more but it appears that if I choose the wrong event or dance to the wrong record at an event I am going to be sneered at. Maybe a new thread could be started.... " Soul Do Etiquette - How to avoid a social faux pas."
  11. I know this thread is a bit old now, but I've only recently joined soul-source and saw this so thought I would add my two pen'orth. Not sure if these could ever be classed as No.1's but, Keep On Keeping On - NF Porter, Do What You Feel - The Rimshots, and Like Her - Gentlemen & Theirs Lady(ies)? seemed to result in increased dance floor activity. Two things I really remember about Mr. M's is the heat, which seemed to be twice as much as the main room, and the fact I could barely understand any of the DJ's when they spoke due to the volume/distortion through the speakers.
