  4. D. Malone was often used as a writing credit on Bobby Bland records from the Duke label (rightly or wrongly). So that writing credit probably came right off of the Duke single that Bowie learned the song from. I don't have my records in front of me, but just expanding on Pete's comment.

  9. Hermon Hitson, Ralph "Soul" Jackson and Barbara Mason playing in Austin tonight - and also at the Ponderosa Stomp. Charles Walker still gigging with The Dynamites (I think they're heading to Europe sometime soon?). Wiley & the Checkmates are doing the thing right now, writing new soul tunes that sound great, and of course, the Dap-Kings always put some soul into their funk. I think there's plenty out there for the American soul fan who is paying attention. Maybe not every week in every city, but it IS out there.
  10. My source has been wrong before but I have independent verification. Besides, December 31, 1969 was a Wednesday, and I think you'll find that the musicians union would not allow any recording to be done on Wednesdays. All will eventually be told on my blog.
  11. Jay Lewis - who was he? His Capitol 45s were all pretty clearly Atlanta productions, but the Dra 45 fairly obviously wasn't. Anyone know the story behind this guy?

  14. Registered mail from the US to the UK is more like $16.50 than $12, but it *can* work to help you avoid the taxes if the sender is in the right position with her or his local post office. What I have done is declare the insurance value on the registration form, check the "gift" box on the customs form, and not put a value in on the customs form. I'm a regular at my post office and all of the clerks know me, so they've never questioned my omission. However, they actually should check to see that the value on the customs form matches the value on the registration form. This way, I'm covered in case something happens, and the recipient shouldn't have to pay any tax penalties on delivery.
  15. Many of us who have been in the American mod scene at least know OF Lee and he is universally respected I think it's fair to say. I've only had contact with him through email but I am upset to see this thread. Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery. Brian Poust
  16. Ah, the legend continues. I have mixed feelings about it now. On the one hand, I still think it's a crap record. Every instrument is out of tune and the vocal is weak. On the other hand, I hadn't quite gotten serious about collecting 45 from Georgia at the time I traded it to Barry (he was indeed living in Detroit at the time and I had met him at a Mod do in Chicago a few months prior, so this would have been 1998 or 1999). I have, of course, never seen another one and may never turn up another one again so from that perspective I shouldn't have let it go. But had I NOT let it go, it may well still be the 50 cent 45 I purchased rather than the 5000 pound oddity it's become. There was a thread on the old soul talk listserv about the worst soul 45, and I did indeed submit Arthur Willis as such, which caused quite a flurry of activity in my email box. If I remember correctly, Barry cut an acetate from the 45 I traded him and sent that acetate to Andy Rix. When exactly Andy bought the 45 from Barry I don't know and doesn't really matter anyway I suppose. Bottom line. You win some and you lose some. I let a shit rare record go for not a lot of money, but I can appreciate the story that surrounds it now at least.
  17. Neither of those, but suggests that this could be an interesting list of songs in the end This one was on 45 and definitely a female lead singer.
  18. Heard a tune last night - either female lead or girl group - in which they kept singing about being stupid. How's that for a vague description. It wasn't Solomon Burke's "Stupidity", but any ideas as to what it might have been?

  22. Not wanting to step on any toes, so when Denbo's little auction is over with, I am ready to sell a VG+ (at least) copy of Louis Jordan's "65 Bars" on Tangerine, a wlp copy. Please email vespa@mindspring.com if you would like to make an offer. I do already have a reasonable price in mind, however. Denbo, if you haven't sold your copy yet, I'll hold off on responding to offers since yours was up for grabs first. sound clip: https://www.georgiasoul.com/sounds/49/jordan.mp3
  23. Ballads - yes, that seems to be right. Thanks for the pointer to Manship's. I hadn't noticed it was there before I guess.
