  2. Hermon Hitson, Ralph "Soul" Jackson and Barbara Mason playing in Austin tonight - and also at the Ponderosa Stomp. Charles Walker still gigging with The Dynamites (I think they're heading to Europe sometime soon?). Wiley & the Checkmates are doing the thing right now, writing new soul tunes that sound great, and of course, the Dap-Kings always put some soul into their funk. I think there's plenty out there for the American soul fan who is paying attention. Maybe not every week in every city, but it IS out there.

  4. Not a lot you can do really...and as Derek said I think this will start to happen a lot more now that the feedback system has changed. Problem is if it got lost in the post, would you be happy to only get $20 as a refund or would you want the full purchase price???

Registered mail from the US to the UK is more like $16.50 than $12, but it *can* work to help you avoid the taxes if the sender is in the right position with her or his local post office. What I have done is declare the insurance value on the registration form, check the "gift" box on the customs form, and not put a value in on the customs form. I'm a regular at my post office and all of the clerks know me, so they've never questioned my omission. However, they actually should check to see that the value on the customs form matches the value on the registration form. This way, I'm covered in case something happens, and the recipient shouldn't have to pay any tax penalties on delivery.

  5. Many of us who have been in the American mod scene at least know OF Lee and he is universally respected I think it's fair to say. I've only had contact with him through email but I am upset to see this thread. Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.

  6. if it's the one i'm thinking of, it was "discovered" for the northern scene by an US collector who promoted it via the internet for being the "worst soul record ever"

have to say i agree with that...

Ah, the legend continues. I have mixed feelings about it now. On the one hand, I still think it's a crap record. Every instrument is out of tune and the vocal is weak. On the other hand, I hadn't quite gotten serious about collecting 45 from Georgia at the time I traded it to Barry (he was indeed living in Detroit at the time and I had met him at a Mod do in Chicago a few months prior, so this would have been 1998 or 1999). I have, of course, never seen another one and may never turn up another one again so from that perspective I shouldn't have let it go. But had I NOT let it go, it may well still be the 50 cent 45 I purchased rather than the 5000 pound oddity it's become.

There was a thread on the old soul talk listserv about the worst soul 45, and I did indeed submit Arthur Willis as such, which caused quite a flurry of activity in my email box. If I remember correctly, Barry cut an acetate from the 45 I traded him and sent that acetate to Andy Rix. When exactly Andy bought the 45 from Barry I don't know and doesn't really matter anyway I suppose.

Bottom line. You win some and you lose some. I let a shit rare record go for not a lot of money, but I can appreciate the story that surrounds it now at least.

  9. Not wanting to step on any toes, so when Denbo's little auction is over with, I am ready to sell a VG+ (at least) copy of Louis Jordan's "65 Bars" on Tangerine, a wlp copy. Please email vespa@mindspring.com if you would like to make an offer. I do already have a reasonable price in mind, however.

Denbo, if you haven't sold your copy yet, I'll hold off on responding to offers since yours was up for grabs first.

  10. 6Ts Studio 1 / Coxone stuff? Only a guess!

No, it's definitely R&B they're after, and the closest I've come up with is possibly something close to Belgian popcorn, but that's not quite the sound. The guys who are buying it around here are very secretive too, probably for fear or rising prices.

  11. Can someone explain the island sound to me, referring to what some older Jamaican record buyers from New York, Miami, etc seem to be looking for? There are a handful of guys who frequent some of the same spots in Atlanta that I shop but I can't quite pin down what they're looking for.

  12. played it on the radio last month...can't remember, but i do think it had a little bit of styrene distortion here and there. i like the flip too. is this a rare record? i never thought so.

I sold my copy a couple of years ago thinking I had another, but was mistaken. Haven't seen one since
