  1. I'm only just finding this post from Dave, would loved to have contributed when it was still a current topic. Alas.... Matt Brown was also in the Men From Macon (with Robert Thomas already discussed as Matt's Cousin). In 2010 I published an article on Matt in my now defunct Georgia Soul blog. He was to attend a music school in the early 1970s but enlisted in the Air Force instead. Following his service, he did go to college in Philadelphia and returned to Macon in 1978 but did no further recordings. Matt Brown Discography: Love Me Just A Little Bit / Funky Soul Train (Sew City 108) - as Mathew Brown 1968 Fire Lighter / The Soul of A Man (Charay C-89) - as The Men From Macon 1969 These Arms of Mine / Spirit of '76 (Le Cam 204) - as Matt & Robert 1969 These Arms of Mine / Soul of A Man instrumental (UNI 55151) - as Matt & Robert 1969 Run For Cover / Pride and Joy (Jar-Val 001) - as Matt & Robert "The Soul Cousins" 1969 A Man Without A Woman / Soul of A Man instrumental (Soft S-1035) 1969 A Man Without A Woman / Soho (Le Cam 357) 1969 Everyday / Baby I'm A Want You (Jar-Val 004) 1972 Thank You Baby / Sweet Thing (Jar-Val 006) 1972 Mr. Pitiful / All I Want Is You (Christi LC-005) by Berry Street Station; Matt Brown appears only on Mr. Pitiful; year unknown

  3. Difficult question to answer without Arthur himself to say. What I do know is that the studio where it was recorded advertised in local papers that anyone could come in with songs, record them, get them pressed and handed over to you to market for a flat fee. How exactly Carl Queen came to release this and the other three soul/funk records on his label I don't know. Carl himself told me that he didn't market them and he didn't even remember Arthur. Rickey Andrews told me he went in with his own musicians and recorded four songs. Two came out on Queen's label, and he put the other two out himself some years later on his own RWA label - he had to buy the tapes from the studio to do that second 45. So, when we think of record labels operating within the music industry, this operation was not your traditional "let's service radio, try for a hit and make lots of money". This was more of a vanity operation where they made money on the studio side and let the artist figure out the rest. Where Rickey Andrews had his own musicians from his nightclub experience, the studio would also have session musicians on hand to either work up the music if it wasn't charted out, or just to read the charts and record. They recorded some talent show winners this way as well. So the "target" in this case, as it were, may have just been Arthur Willis's dream to record and get on the radio - there's no evidence he got any radio play either. Unless and until he is found (I along with quite a few others have looked), there are questions here for which we may never have answers
  4. If memory serves, this one was a bogus listing. The record never existed and was not listed by an honest seller.
  5. There was one legit AW that went through eBay from the Birmingham dealer. I didn't realize you were talking about Rickey Andrews though hence my questions and confusion.
  6. Been through ebay over a dozen times??? Are you counting bootlegs too? I've also seen no evidence of a small find around 2011, only rumor.
  7. I have no idea at this point, Steve.
  8. Rickey Andrews answered an ad in the paper to record at Perfection Sound, with whom Carl Queen was affiliated at the time.
  9. You may have a point, but I'm not entirely sure Carl Queen worked in sequential order.
  10. When you look at the full output of the label, particularly the four Soul/Funk records on the label, and consider the studio in Smyrna where it where it was recorded, all in their totality, you'll put this closer to 1975 than 1970. Either way, absolutely, 100% not a 60s record.
  11. Circa '75, give or take.
  12. So anyway, we're up to what - five copies now?
  13. There are only four Soul/Funk 45s on the label. Everything else they released is country and bluegrass.
  14. Hermon Hitson - Walking In the Park (Lisa) - anyone have one for me?
  15. I have a Spanish Marboo VG+ with a VG picture sleeve $7 + postage.
  16. VG+ or better copy of Nathan Bartell's "Top Going Down" on Soul-Po-Tion. Original pressing only. Cash waiting.
  17. Condolences, Matt
  18. I have a full set of McGrath's labelography series "R&B Indies" volumes 1-4 that I'm interested in selling. Trouble is, postage from the US to anywhere outside the US is probably going to be prohibitive due to the weight. Still, if anyone is interested, I can get a shipping quote to you. $100 for all four books + shipping. Shipping inside the US will be $7.50

  22. Barbara Hall / The Minors split 45 on Tuska catalog 113. Does anyone actually have a copy? I have yet to see or hear of one in real life.
  23. The consignment deal is attractive to those who don't have the time or don't want to bother with eBay and all of it's trappings and occasional headaches. For those of us who do choose to sell ourselves, CS presents an interesting set of issues. While they do command higher prices than most anyone else gets, it's not likely enough to make up the consignment percentage when we can do the work ourselves. However, we have to fight for the same sets of eyeballs, which means sometimes we feel like we're just wholesaling records or giving them away. Then again, I personally still have instances where I am getting higher bids on eBay than the same record that I've had sitting for a set price on Discogs for weeks. I guess in that way it all evens out. CS does a great job at what they do, no doubt. I've bought from them as well and certainly would again. Savvy shoppers will know to look beyond *just* what they offer though.
  24. I may have showed up this morning an entire week early for a record fair, but I do still know enough to state with confidence that these auctions end TOMORROW. Do your part and bid on a few before it's too late.
  25. Highlights include the rare G.O. Smith LP produced by Moses Dillard on Tex-Town, Chocolate Cholly's 4 song EP, Electric Mud, clean JL Hooker At Newport promo, Madhouse, Willie Beaver Hale, The Players and so much more. View the entire list here. Auctions end after full time of the World Cup championship game but if it goes into OT/PK there could be some conflict. Setting snipes is recommended if you're trying to pay attention to both. Thanks for looking. Buy my records. I got bills to pay.
