Do Collectors Really Pay For "place Holders"?
Agent45 replied to Agent45's topic in Look At Your Box
Ah yes! Possible business names: "Trashed Treasures" "Holey Grails" "Dashed Dreams" "Wrecked Rares" I like it.... -
Thanks for the replies. I've sent both of you questions via PM.
-
You're digging out in the field and you happen upon a very rare/sought after/expensive 45 but it's totally trashed to the point that you wouldn't wish it on your worst enemy's turntable. But your conscience won't let you leave the 45 there so you pick it up and bring it home. Now what? You can't really play it, but would anyone else want it either? What are your thoughts on this phenomenon?

Sandy Gaye - He's Good For Me / Talk Is Cheap (Moonshot) Will pay $375 for a mint copy, don't want anything less than VG+
-
Good thread. I'll get the discography updates onto the Georgia Soul website ASAP.
-
The Fabulous Dinos - Instant Love / Retreat (Saber 105) VG+ $300 Some superficial scuffs on the vinyl, but this is still one of the better copies I've seen of this rarity, the first 45 from the group that brought you "Bad Girl" et. al. PM or email vespa (@) mindspring dot com to reserve. $5 postage anywhere in the world. If you would like it to be registered, the total postage international air mail will be $16.50.

Joan Bowie - Standing There / No Longer Needed (Troy) This isn't really a soul record, but I figured there are enough knowledgeable record collectors here with varied interests to warrant the question. "Standing There" is a really wildly produced moody type of song, probably from the early to mid-1960s. I've been unable to find any information about the record at all. Does anyone have info about this 45?
-
I've sent you a PM regarding one of your wants.
-
Good luck. I've asked here before with no results and have otherwise been trying to get one of these for years.

Calvin Arnold wrote the songs and recorded this one in Atlanta at the studio he owned with Herb Lance. I believe he said they were from Atlanta too. He only ever referred to them as "the girl group" and doesn't remember who exactly they were. I have a theory about who they were, but no way to confirm it....yet. I am pretty sure I have it. All of my records are in storage while we're getting ready to move into a new house. I can answer this with more certainty in a few days. Yes I've spoken with him but not yet in length about Larry & the Conservatives. The last couple of weeks have been hectic to say the least, and all of my spare time has been spent working on the aforementioned house. Rex and I will sit down soon though since we're officially moving into the new house tomorrow.

Not as odd as you might think. Ilene Berns, husband of Bang/Shout owner Bert Berns, explored Atlanta connections (including Tee Fletcher and Calvin Arnold) and eventually moved to Atlanta (and then to Nashville) following Bert's death. There are a number of Shout 45s recorded in Atlanta or nearby. 248 - Moses Dillard & Martha Starr - Cheating, Teasin' & Misleading / You Cant Laugh It Off - 1970 (Greenville SC) 249 - Richard Marks - Love Is Gone / Don't Take It Out On Me - 1970 250 - Bit Of Honey - He's Number One / Live In Maid - 1970 251 - El Shobey - Never Miss What You Got / Whole Thing - 1970 (This one I'm not 100% about) 252 - Freddie Terrell & The Soul Explosion Band - I'll Show You How To Make Music / Respect Yourself - 1970 253 - Moses Dillard & The Tex-Town Display - I Promised To Love You / We Gotta Come Together - 1970 (Greenville SC) 255 - Liz Spraggins - Pass Me Not / Mis-Un-Der-Stand-Ing - 1970 The 300 series has the yellow label design and an Atlanta address: 300 - Kenny Seymour - I've Got The Rest Of My Life (To Love You) / I've Got The Rest Of My Life (To Love You) (Instrumental) - 1973 301 - Jimmy Mayes And Mill Street Depot - S.S.N. I'd be surprised if there was a boot of Leo's Sunshipp. It should look like this though:

You mean if DJ Beans spilled himself?

I Love You, So Come On Home / You Know How I Feel (Brooks CR 3106) RITE pressing Looks like it also came out on Rojac, I presume Brooks is the local pressing. What's the story with this 45?
-
Wish I could tell you. My GM copy was badly off center and uncorrectable. So I got a Bulldog copy, which I think I still have. The mastering is so bad (quiet) on the Bulldog copy that it's pointless to try and play. After that I just gave up completely on this record.
-
I play Adam & Eva out on occasion. I can't remember the flip side at all though!
-
You can, but isopropyl alcohol is better since it evaporates more quickly. I used diluted vinegar on a couple of records with old dried/crystalized cat urine once. Didn't get the junk off, but didn't destroy the record either. But isopropyl alcohol is very inexpensive (not that vinegar isn't).

That guy was a real piece of work - makes the folks in this video seem relatively normal (of which I guess there are a couple of normal/sane people in there). But that same guy's family were the REAL head cases! Shame.
-
Great one - I play it out a lot, but American DJs don't really count around here, right?

handy resource: https://www.usps.gov You can calculate what postage is going to be from and to somewhere if you are pretty close to the weight of the package. Usually, a single 45 packaged in a Bags Unlimited box with fillers will weigh about 5oz and cost $4.80 from where I am (Atlanta) to the UK. On ebay, I charge $6 for international air mail because that accounts for more expensive shipping to Australia/Japan from here, and if it goes to UK/Europe, the slight overage will help pay for my mailers and is not grossly over the actual charge to the point where I would expect anyone to complain. For my set sale customers, I charge $5 for international postage for the first 45. I'm guessing that most sellers have their own "system" for coming up with their postage costs, honest or dishonestly - and I would guess that challenging a seller on this wouldn't go down very well after the auction has ended. Best advise is to ask any questions of the seller before bidding ends, and avoid bidding if you aren't happy with what she or he is offering.

Lamar Lewis - Too Darn Fast / If You Really Love Me This isn't necessarily a good record, and it's only borderline soul, with a somewhat indescribable blues leaning I guess, but it's a 45 I'm after nevertheless for the Georgia Soul archives. I figured I would ask here in case anyone has this stuck in a box somewhere. PM or email me at vespa (at) mindspring dot com.

Lots of views, but no action. OK, so I guess the prices are less popular than the 45s. PM your offer if you're interested.
