  7. we must be on a similar wavelength I think it's an affliction Carl. When I'm out dancing I sometimes have 'the imaginary instrument' with me-it used to be the horns in the early days, mainly saxaphone and trumpet. It occassionaly changes into the drum patterns at the moment its the guitar (rhythm or base), . when I hear a song that ticks my boxes, is analyse, I think there are certain notes, key changes, phrases or mechanics of just a couple of instruments playing that capture me, and I am hooked. That's what I have been doing since I was about 13. I think I wrote my first essay on an instrumental track 'I Hear A Symphony' Carmel Strings when I was 16. In my Diary-I wish I'd kept all that stuff . I agree about the Holland Dozier track - loud, punctuated, good high and low frequencies captured onto tape, without, by the sound of it, too many dubs and mixdowns. I think that was the likes of Ray Monette, Dennis Coffey on guitar and Babbit on bass again. Not sure who the drummer was, could have been Uriel or maybe even Spyder Webb.... If you have ever heard 'Glory Fleeting' I posted on Youtube as a demo, this track I was trying to emulate a Ric Tic instrumental.... This track actually features George Katsakis of The Royaltones (where Bob and Dennis used to be members) who offered to help out with my quest in the early days. I tried very hard to get the back beats on the guitar right, but that is an usual skill and quite painful for a really non guitarist as me! There are like 3 separate tracks of sax, and real guitar overdubs that I have done. I also did a real bass line on it..... A few weeks ago I found myself with a spare few hours and decided to pull out some tunes I hadn't heard for a while. I was half way through re-reading Dennis Coffey's book and it reminded me of The Holidays-Making Up Time-Golden World'. I sat on my sofa with an air guitar and tried to emulate the guitar- punch back beat! I was there for quite a while but could I get it? Not a chance. The guitar back beat is like The metronome from heaven. Totally on the Mark. I thought it would be easy. I obviously need a lot more years of practice.............and a guitar. Great thread Carl......Keep up the good work. Best Kev
  8. ....and this one. A very young Tony Smith.

  10. Lorraine, Did you ever dance The Choo Choo and if so what movements did the dance contain? Sorry but I had to ask. Best Kev
  11. I think our mum and our Auntie Betty even made it one night! Kev xx
  12. Hi Ken. Seems a long long time ago since we first met that sad day at The Alex. It did however spark some fantastic soul nights and longstanding friendships . best Kev
  13. That is so nice Lorraine. I'm sure it fills the hearts of many a soul fan on this site to know that the respect and feeling is reciprocated. Best Kevin
  14. Mark Lenny's sad death was the start of it all. we'd been running The Dance Chase for over a year by then but the Northern nights began with that fundraiser. Yes his family were there that night. I didn't know him from Stafford as I was a non-attender but we became good mates when I moved to Clapham. He was going out with Teresa my girlfriend Debbie's best mate at the time he died. A sad loss. I still have a couple of records his sister gave me as a reminder of him. I also remember that Lenny's labrador dog MAX turned up at the Alex one night , not long after his funeral, and Teresa followed it home only to find it was locked in the house. (I kid you not) Always was a wild one Lenny. I remember the Labour party do. I was playing stuff like Garfield Fleming and The Seven Souls at that Xmas Party. Also remember dancing with Glynnis Kinnock to a Marvin Gaye record. I bumped into John Prescott in the bogs and pleaded with him to sort things out if he ever got into power as, I quote, (Its mighty shit out there). I bumped into him years later outside the Guardi Cathedral in Barcelona but didn't have the heart to remind him, (Its still mighty shit out there.) See you at the next Majestic hopefully. Best Kev
  15. That's funny.Made me laugh  I remember we chained a huge bass bin to the ceiling joist directly over the dancefloor. I prayed every night for weeks that it wouldn't come crashing down killing god knows how many dancers and giving us BIG headlines in The South London Press.!! One of the things I liked about the place is that Geoff and me built the place from scratch,. dancefloor, electrics, console, cloakroom, fire exit. We purposely built it to turn it into a club that could have a 2 O'clock liscence. Something that didn't happen in that area at all. If you can find that flyer could you post it up. I'm trying to contact Keiron as he has all the promotional stuff from those days. I lent him them as he was compiling a book on the history of clubs in the Brixton/Clapham area but I've now lost touch with him. Best Kev Anyone remember THE DANCE CHASE nights and THE HIGH NOTE CLUB!! Ion, do you think there'd be enough interest in trying to get a reunion together??
  16. If anyone has a contact number or address for Kieron I'd much appreciate a PM. We used to be very good friends until I lost contact with him when I moved out of the Brixton area. I'd like to know how he is fairing these days. Best Kev.

  20. Lorraine Chandler - She Don't Want You - Soul-tbc Kevin
  21. Hi again Lorraine. It looks like you're settling in here like a good 'un. Thank you for the information on the Carol Anderson label. It's great to have met you and Jack Ashford but one of my deepest regrets was never having the chance to meet Mike Terry before he sadly passed away. Could you share with us your fondest memories him. The most respected and talented man. It would be great to hear some memories/anectodes. Best Kevin
  22. Hi Ian I see you can't sleep either.. That reminds me of the first time i ever heard a soul singer sing live. It was mid 70's at the Casino, again JJ Barnes. If I had n't realised I'd become a devoted soul fan before that night I certainly did after his concert. The experience totally changed me. The artists I find and in a lot of cases Detroiters, (if I can use that expression)..certainly fit the Soul tag with excellence and gusto! Great to have Lorraine on here isn't it. Best Kev
  23. Hi Lorraine, A Great Big WELCOME to Soulsource. It was great to meet you in Prestatyn this year, your show was FANTASTIC and THANKYOU for signing my copy of 'You Only Live Twice' and the spare autograph for my good friend John (who couldn't make it that night.) You truly are an amazing and talented Lady! I'm sure there'll be lots of questions for you. Here's mine...I hope you can help with an answer....... A few friends and I were discussing Sandra Richardson's 'Stay With Me' ...a tremendous record..on InterSoul....and Carol Anderson's Tomorrow Is Not A Promise' on Soul 'O' Sonic. Did you have any involvement in the latter...another tremendous piece of soul. We were wondering if the labels were linked? as the artwork is very similar and the dates of the records are the same. A PIED PIPER appears......and we follow. Thank you so much for your contributions to Soul music...you deserve to take a bow. ..and I hope there's more to come. Lots of Soul love to you. Kevin. x
  24. I knew I had this lurking in a box somewhere. An early one from (Mr Emotion)
