Must agree there...for me (although I'd followed modern rooms on and off since hearing Richard S et al.on Saturday nights at Wigan playing lots of new releases and many a time to an emptyish hall circa 78/79. lots of time spent in modern rooms...it got decidedly better in the 90's through to now. Teddy Pendergrass-Believe in love-the good Su Su stuff-Takin you Back-James Radcliff +Urban Groove-rasmus faber+Mello Divided/United-Michelle Weeks-Sara Divine-Special-salted productions with Chuck Love...the list goes on and on-I used to feel let down by a lot of 'garage' music in the late as I found the loops too contrived and boring -but hey presto somehow the productions got better with Mr Knuckles and Drizabone etc...it all began to fit. And the world is better.

Ta Nik-Must say I hold Kenny Bobien in the same regard as Mike Terry (and I wear his t-shirt to bed). When I first came across his records about 4 years ago-first one must have been 'Rise above the Storm' -I've collected everything of his I've seen. If one voice-style-or whatever you want to call it captures what 'soulful house' is IMHO it is Kenny Bobien. When I first realized that Mike Terry had been a part of most of the music that has entertained and inspired me throught the last 35 years I felt mighty proud to be part of his appreciation society.... if you will. Also when I first realized Kenny Bobien was out there making his mark on soul/gospel/dance music I found out I had another hero to cherish. Makes sense doesn't it! Kev

Nik Much appreciated me old cocker. I must have quite a few 12" feat Mr Bobien. love the stuff with Moses and kenny's version of Why I Sing. Not come across an album of his yet. Do they exist? i remember a night many moons ago when Paul F(soulshrew)? and myself got thrown out of nearly every pub in Soho. pPaul had just split from his missus. Loved this one made me chuckle to my wellies. Reading this thread makes me think that IMO quite a few of you don't buy Modern soul. Am I wrong? Lots of the stuff being listed ,although great sounds; I've been listening and dancing to for 20 years. What floats my boat is hearing new tunes and appreciating what's happening out there now ...and there's an abundence of it. Here's just one example of a tune I keep going back to from this year. IMO the whole CD is excellent. ok lets get past the-'It aint vinyl' Track 9 is a touching tribute to his daughter who died-she was studying to be a doctor-remember not long ago Black Americans didn't even have the right to vote. However after also losing his brother-Mr Fields went on and finished this project. Beautiful music from a Beautiful family man. Read the notes. This tune always fills me with sadness and hope. The sadness and loss Tony Fields feels and the optimism I hear in the creativity he has in writing such an emotive and lovely song. This IS soul.-maybe not for northern dancefloors but soul non the less. No sound bytes here-I sggest that IMHO some of you should put a few less sheckles into JM et al. pockets (sorry John-I know you run a fantastic buisness) and help suppoet a few more of the worthy talents out there trying to earn a crust. Do yourselves a flavour...check more of these artists out-for the greater good of soul music. Cheers Kev Moore P.S. I always thought it was soulfull house but with Mr Bobien there's always a leaning to Gospel as he's a pastor in a church in New Jersey. (Check out his recording of 'Father' Don't think he's with Su Su anymore. I think they split????? I got in touch with him via MySpace..really nice guy. Got loads of his records... he has an amazing voice and range. When you hear him come down an octave he's still with it. Ta Kev

One of the nice things about the Modern scene is that hard to track down or pre-release tunes are played alongside relatively easy to come by tunes-as it was back in the good old days when Woolworths were adding to peoples collections. Some tunes tend to become harder to find as they dry up. hence you can still find copies of Shazz-innerlife Sean Oliver-You and Me Kenny Bobein 12"s Cunnie Williams Maxwell The list is endless but you can quite easily find them if you shop around. When you put them beside Dennis Taylor Aretha-Wonderful Al Green-Keep on Pushing love-One in a Million etc.. R Kelly-Step in the name of love You see not a lot of this is particularly rare or hard to find. Also there are new cd's coming out all the time Leonard Julien 111-Reflections of Soul Stan Mosley-Man Up Tony Fields-Elegant Lady Although some dj's will have exclusives to push and some will become hard to finders IMO a lot of what's played on the Modern scene is (by it's own definition) available. I think this changes when you tread the thread of 70's, 80's etc being Modern as these tunes have had longer to become a) desirable and less available. I personally like the fact that much of it is available at decent prices and that you can (sometimes) chat to the artists via Facebook etc. I certainly hope this situation is maintained as recordings are easier to obtain and the artists get there tunes heard by more people. Which are the Thelma tracks? I know they were a tight knit group that formed part of The Snake pit team eventually. Love their sound wish I had more Thelma stuff.
