  3. Having driven up to Sheriden's with back door Kenny leaving my coat and a load of records in the boot of his car. Next morning..... ....'Where's the car Ken?' ....'Swopped it for this album and that old banger!' Woops! Kev
  4. Thinking about it the two most influencial Motown records if undiscovered now would have to be: Barrett Strong 'Money(That's What I Want)' and The Miracles 'Get a Job' Funny how Britain 2009 could be echoing Detroit 1959. Whoops is that the Bank Manager................ Kev
  5. Thanks Ian I'll check them out. Kev
  6. Thanks for the reply Ian sure are some stalwarts amongst those names. I respect the passion, commitment and energy you put into your work Having aquired quite a few of your cd's over the years I must admit I listen to them infrequently as the production techniques leave me with an 'almost' there feeling. While others just leave me reaching for the stop button It's like a racer running 10,000 metres seeing the finishing line and not being able to make the final 100 metres. I understand also that if you've recorded 100's of songs some are going to stand out more than others. I still play Reaching for the Best, Put your magic Spell on Me, and Weak Spot. I quite like all of those records and keep them in my collection. I also bought copies of Chuck Jackson All Over the World (and was genuienly astounded at the 10-15 minute live performance of it by Mr Jackson at Gt Yarmouth in the late 80's) A great soul moment as IMO most who where there would agree. I have a live recording of it that I often go back to to remember the event. Also I have Man up in the Sky. These recordings worked as they fitted into the genre at the time and as I recall around the same time as Lisa Standsfield was pushing up the charts and Yazz was doing her thing with Coldcut. I have a soft spot for Technicolour and It's all over the Grapevine as well. I know it's my opinion and taste but I've often wondered if you recorded any Deep Soul tracks with anyone or any tracks that I would describe as Southern in style/Shouters in the vein of James Carr, Tony Washington, Joe Simon, Irma Thomas, Bobby Bland etc. It may be that you have concentated and worked to your strengths i.e. producing mid/uptempo dance tracks. But I'd be interested in hearing any 'Deep' or 'Southern' recordings if they exist. Regards Kev
  7. Never get tired of playing Motown. If you haven't heard it for a while check out Mr Ruffin on 'Farewell is a Lonely Sound'. It's also a true gem IMO. Kev
  8. Hi Jason You certainly have good taste. I first came across it through Soul Sam playing it and like you I have to make do with the superb lost friends cd (for now). I was playing it this morning. John Manship had one up for auction a few months ago and I had to leave the bidding at £600 as that was my limit at the time but it sold for just over £900. Quite a hard one to find I think but an absolutely fantastic slice of mid tempo soul. Not sure what would be on the flip as I've never owned a copy. Regards Kev
  9. Hi Ian I'm still intigued as to what your answer to the above question would be. I understand the passion and financial commitment of working with some of our revered artists and producers and feel that you (in hindsight) might still have veered towards working with Sylvia Moy who there is no doubt is an extremely talented lady. But given the hyperthetical questions if you'd had a chance to go back in time: Which areas of the states would you have gone to? I'm thinking of soul production styles. We know that Detroit, Chicago,LA, Memphis, Philly, Florida, Texas etc etc had at times distinct styles and there was quite a bit of crossing links/states whatever. Secondly Which artists, arrangers, producers would you have liked to have worked with that you never have had the chance to? I'm thinking of which people would have infiuenced you. i.e. Sylvia Moy, Jimmy Wisner, Paul Riser, Arthur Wright, Jesse James etc etc. I read that The Charades-'Key To My Happiness' was a huge influence. Just thought that your answer to these questions would give a greater insight into your feelings and aproach to production techniques. Hope this has now been posted in the correct thread. Regards Kev
  10. For out and out stompin' Isley's-Tell me if it's just a rumour' Doesn't get enough plays. Kev
  11. 2 more from me that always make me laugh 'I don't collect albums' 'I didn't know that was on the other side'
  12. Best one I remember....'It's just a feeling'-Jackie Green na Mrs Bicknell circa 1988 Kev
  13. Bump Hi Ian Is there any chance off a reply? I'd love to hear your thoughts as you have been a prolific producer. Kev
  14. Could have meant F*!%ked Off. Kev
  15. Hi Jo I find that the US demo of Marvin's 'Too Busy Thinking 'Bout My Baby' is different from the US issue. The production seems higher in the mix and the plucked strings seem to be more prominant-especially at the end of the song. Must happen with lots of songs and takes. Can't go back to the issue now. Kev
  16. I Disagree TOHOM could and should be played out. Also Tammi Terrell's version. Kev
  17. Got to be one of the finest records to come out Motown Chalky. Yes! Without a doubt. One that I like to play occassionaly. Brenda Holloway-You make me so very happy-absolutely sublime. Yes also. Kev
  18. Ian firstly thankyou for the night at the Ion Bar, although I had to leave early I had a very enjoyable night and it is always a pleasure to see The Flirtations (still a great act) not that they were the only ones dishing it out. Secondly and I'm not sure this should be posted in this thread or the other, but having listened to lots of your productions over the years I would be interested in this: Many times I think that if I had a time machine I'd like to travel back in time to Detroit around about 1965, maybe to have a night at The Phelps Lounge or The Twenty Twenty Grand, Hustle around the studios Terra Shirma, Golden World, Hitsville even. If you had the chance to do this...and I know it's hyperthetical.....where would you have gone...who would you have worked with and how would you have arranged the productions. This is a guenuine question and has crossed my mind for a long time. Kev
  19. Always pestered Sam to play Ernie Johnson 'I Can't Stop The Pain' and he always has if he's carrying it with him Thanks Sam
  20. I dream of Northern 45's on a regular basis. I wake up and realize they don't exist. But when I'm asleep I can picture the title artist label and sound. Strange phenomenon! Been doing this for years. Once I was walking through Brixton singing a made up song and I swear I sounded like Smokey Robinson. Just for that moment. Couldn't recapture it though. Strange world indeed. Kev
  21. Anyone got a sound clip?
  22. You wouldn't want to know. They don't even have Holland's pies down here. Then again I remember the first time I asked for a Steak Pudding in a Leeds chippie and got some very strange looks! Kev
  23. No mate after Leeds I moved back to Burnley for a couple of years then in the words of Thatcher-I got on my bike and came to London. Been here ever since. Loved my time in Leeds used to hang about with Dave Ball of Soft Cell just B4 Tainted Love and Judy Street were covered by them. Kev
