  1. A few observations … Estelle Bennett was married to Joe Dong .. the Ronettes road manager She was the sister-in-law of Teddy Vann’s wife Wanling I spoke to Teddy a few times in the late 90s and specifically asked him about the identity of Frankie & The Classicals .. he remembered her, and them, but couldn’t recall her full name .. he said they were just a local group that he knew The only other female vocalist I can think of with a similar vocal style is Linda Tate .. I’m not saying it’s her but there are some connections Eddie Singleton & Teddy Vann were friends in New York … Linda was one of Eddie’s artists recording as Linda & The Pretenders on Assault .. and Linda & The Vistas on Shrine My Bell Sound acetate of ‘Believe Me’ has ‘Teddy Vann Prod’ annotated on the label although it is pencilled over … it is therefore highly likely that they knew each other They could have just been a studio band Teddy put together for the recording but comments on YouTube would suggest otherwise .. given they performed live Unfortunately, Estelle, Eddie, Linda & Teddy are no longer with us so we cannot find out anything else from them Andy john nicastro 3 years ago Love this song! I saw them sing it in person at the local dance! But never knew most of the words she's singing! genuineuni 5 years ago Feel Calla Records didn't have the money for decent distribution. Certainly, the song was admirable and a Philly regional hit. Bill Nissley 9 years ago @rooie16 Thanks Rooie, was a very local hit here in the Philly area, always thought it had a very mesmerizing sound, loved the vocals. Kind of song that grabs one on first hearing. Though it is not for everyone.
  2. Sounds like the lad has done good for himself ... as parents we aspire that our kids will get on in the world and step up beyond our dreams ... that’s what I worked for and I’m sure others did the same ... so he might be a bit crazy spending that amount of money on a 45 but it is what it is ... I would not, and could not, but it doesn’t mean he should not ... Andy
  3. I sold my Attractions for £20 ... Chris Modley brought a handful back from Chicago .. mid 80s .. think I gave him £4 for it ... bloody good record Andy
  4. Thanks Mark for posting a really interesting perspective ... the context you provided for its compilation was thought provoking indeed ... enjoyed reading through the list and probably like many others went " had that .. had that" .. but no longer Andy
  5. Agree ... when I met up with her in L.A. She told me about it and just laughed it off ... and said at the time she just had to do what she had to do to try and keep the NY Motown operation going .... I then asked Eddie as this was the first time I’d heard about her pressing up copies of ‘My Guy’ ... it was part of a very broad conversation about life and times ... he didn't laugh that much about the whole situation .. he clearly was still very upset and angry about the way Miss Ray had been treated by Motown ... airbrushed out of the history of Motown in my opinion ... but I am biased Andy
  6. I've checked the BMI song title entries for Kent Harris and he has nothing listed that is associated to Jobete, Stone Agate etc ... I've been through, page by page, the Jobete catalog which contains details of every song from Jan 59 to March 31 1967 and Kent Harris is not mentioned There are a few titles missing and unfortunately 'Gotta Wipe Away The Teardrops' is one of them ... one of the writers is Ruth Talmadge who did write a handful of tunes for Motown with Frank Wilson, Vance Wilson & Hal Davis 'The Day My Heart Stood Still' is listed and I've attached the page to show the detail Ruth did write a song, Pril Music published, called 'They Call Me Mr Lonely' with Marcene and Beverly Harris I haven't spoken to Ruth for a few years but happy to drop her a line if needed Andy
  7. Mine plays the same as yours ... very disappointed when I got it Andy
  8. At the time of these recordings Herman was married to Gi Gi, of the Charmaines .... Gi Gi told me she cut the demo of 'INYLAB' and at one time had an acetate of her demo but she couldn't find it when I was at her house. She said she was upset, mostly with Dale Warren, that Andrea got to record & release it as she really loved the song. I have a very vague memory that Bobby, Herman's brother, said Janice was actually Gerri Jackson ... Hermans sister-in-law, Gi Gi's sister ... I picked a copy up at Bobby's house which is why it came up in conversation .... Gerri cut 'Right Direction', with Herman, released on the flip of the Stone Blue release of 'Who's Kissing You Tonight' which they cut at Don Walden's studio in Cincinatti .... but, pinch of salt, it was along time ago and I might not be right about the Janice / Gerri statement but it is stuck in my memory and I can't think why it would be there for any other reason Andy Andy
  9. I used to feature this version of ‘You’d Better Wake Up’ on occasions In my sets an alternate, but inferior, version was released on a Goldmine Totally Solid Hitbound CD credited to the Debonaires Andy
  10. I listened to the show last night Dean & Alan did a incredible tribute to John ... they put together a heartfelt and respectful tribute to his life ... full of memories and stories from people who knew him and respected him The words from Val Shively were touching ... I felt his loss and admiration in equal levels I would urge you all to listen Thank you D&A .... you did him proud and if he had been listening I'm sure he would have cracked a smile Andy
  11. Thanks ... missed it but got it now A
  12. is there a link to the show ... really want to listen to it Andy
  13. This is such sad sad news ... it cuts as deep for me as many of us felt when icons such as Popcorn or Mike Terry left us. The simple fact is that John shaped our musically journey through life as much as those who made the records he discovered and we loved. An equal partnership in my eyes. We all have our stories about frantic phone calls .. stories he would relate about his numerous trips and the people he met that none of us could ever equal .... Many of us had visits to Soul Bowl and both places were pretty overwhelming. I recall my first visit to Portland St in the 70s, as I'd been in Kings Lynn with friends, I live not that far away, we dropped in one Wednesday morning to see what was on offer this week . pretty mindblowing ... in later years I used to go to West Winch with Steve Handbury as he had stuff to collect but as I didn't know if I had enough money that month to pay for my gas bill, let alone my mortgage, I was just an innocent bystander as deals took place... but just being there amongst all of that 'stuff' and seeing what he had sitting on his bench remain memories that I'll keep, and treasure, forever When it comes to buying vinyl I've always been frugal ... some would say tight ... and John knew that... so when I had some spare cash and phoned to try and buy a 45 off the list John would say "Ok Andy, clearly I've made a mistake on the price because that's the only reason you're calling" ... and he was right. It is a sad, so very sad, loss but what an incredible life he must have had ... he continued the journey, in a different way but as equally important, as people like Dave Godin, and many others, that opened a door for us all to enjoy and appreciate music that we probably take for granted but is firmly embedded in our DNA . R.I.P John ... thank you for just being you Andy
  14. The JW acetate was found in Rose Marie McCoys basement ....... the 'Switch Around' girl Andy
  15. True words indeed Chalky ... I think the 100 Club has gone above and beyond any other club Happy 40th guys Andy
  16. That's because it belongs to Ian Clark ... one could therefore assume this 'acetate' originated from somewhere in the Guildford area .. as opposed to L.A. Andy
  17. I believe it was a slightly different version as well ... certainly sounded different at the Palais Can somebody ask him ? Andy

  20. I've become confused ... not about Garrison Records because Steve G has set that record straight ... more about the Honey Bees There are comments on YT from family members about who they were ... I'm sure this has been pointed out before As examples Delano Williams 3 years ago This is My Aunt Barbara Williams; I AM Juanita Williams Son.... Thank You for remember them...... GOD BLESS There was a YT comment from a family member that named all of the group members Has anybody saved it ? Andy
  21. My memory is failing me ... should I be worried ? I taped all of the 45s Nigel got that day ... if I find it I’ll be able to list the lot ... obviously got confused about exactly what he got on which day Andy
  22. Indeed ... I’m sure he said £50 ... so that is quite a lot more than I recall him saying .. I’ve never been good at numbers unlesss they begin with TMG or ZTSC Thank you for clarifying the situation .... and as an aside lovely to see you on Saturday at the wedding do Andy
  23. It was a 7” ... Nigel Parker called in to see me the day he purchased it from Martin Koppel via Tim ... he’d been over to collect a few things ... Magnetics (Bonnie) being one ... he didn’t pay a lot for it as it was in pretty poor shape at the time ... lots of snap, crackle and pop ... I’m thinking it was £50 ... as we know it now lives happily with Mr Fortnum Andy
