1965 Disc Weekly Reviews Of The Tamla Motown UK Tour
Andy Rix replied to Soul Cargo's topic in All About the SOUL
Have you touched base with Keith Rylatt ? He featured the details of the Tour heavily in his book 'HITSVILLE - The Birth of Tamla Motown' .. and spoke to a lot of those who attended Andy -
It wasn't an Ace/Kent release so not included ... I was shocked, but thrilled, when it came on Andy
-
And Mr Peel played The Cairos - Stop Overlooking me ... when Ady released it on Horaces Margaret is the sister of Bobby Mandolph (Vault Records) Andy

Never ever seen a single sided DJ copy ... must be tough ... well obviously it will be if there was only a run of 50 Still wonder why they bothered given the personal nature of the song
-

I think I purchased mine at a St Ives niter ... maybe 78 for about £6 ... put it up for sale about 10 years ago, via a dealer, for around £80 but nobody was interested ... he also didn't have any takers for my George Hobson or Delegates Of Soul so they are still here ........... thankfully Andy

It's an odd one ... you would have thought that as this was done specifically for Scott Regan the number they pressed would have been really low ... you wouldn't imagine that other Radio DJs would play a song promoting another DJ or Radio Station ... but I recall seeing it a lot in the late 70s for less than £10 Makes you wonder why Ric Tic didn't just cut a few acetates for Scott for his own personal play Andy
-
It's pure Philadelphia ... might be influenced by the Detroit crew ... as everybody was at those times Andy

A couple of very minor alteratuions I thought my game was strong, and my hold on you was tight but But I found out that I was wrong, since you've been gone, whoa oh I count the days now You told me that you loved me, but you found out from your friends They said that ... that I was two-timing you, whoa time and time again Know whoa you know I did you wrong girl and I'm so sorry (Monday) I tried to call you on the phone girl, (Tuesday) but you're never at home now (Thursday) Wrote you a great big letter baby, (Friday) but it came back return to sender (___ hey girl) Going all over this great big town, trying my best to find you around, whoa oh yeah well now My bags are all packed, and I have my reservations And um I guess I had my chance now, there's no time for desperation Oh whoa you know I did you wrong girl, and I'm so sorry All I can do is count the days, days yeah you've been gone Woo-hoo [repeat to fade]

Jimmy Fraser 'Of Hopes and Dreams ...
Andy Rix replied to Keith Gildart's topic in All About the SOUL
Pretty sure it was a Soul Sam exclusive for quite some time covered-up as Smokey & The Blades - Hang On In There ... only the instrumental side was played at the time .. the vocal didn't get a look in Andy -
Articles: Ella Woods & Miss Lady by Kenb
Andy Rix replied to Kenb's topic in Front Page News & Articles
Ken .. as ever .. brilliant work and appreciated .. all of these bits of the jigsaw are so important thank you for your continuing efforts to document such matters Andy -
Here is a related article ... the pictures speak for themselves Andy

In my opinion the one you had Dobber is not authentic .. the picture is poor but looks like the Jobete artwork Miss Ray used for her New York recordings and would never have been used for Detroit tracks Brenda recorded the song at Hitsville in Dec 64 .. and Jimmy in Oct 64 ... close together but Jobete, as far as I’m aware, never did 2 sided acetates ... these were acetates made to ‘promote’ Jobete published songs to the music industry to give non-Motown artists the opportunity to listen to tunes for recording themselves Robb K could articulate their purpose far better than I Andy

Sexton Records - Soul Galore - Simon Soussan

That thought had never crossed my mind ... it is an interesting take on deception ... I think it fits very nicely into the cover-up scene -

I'm very confused .. is Sexton a 'real' label' or just an art thing ? Andy -

Manship’s copy of Cecil Washington on Prophonics
Andy Rix replied to Frankie Crocker's topic in All About the SOUL
I'm on my second copy .. the first came from Soulman (Steve H) .. he mentioned giving one away when he upgraded his first copy but I'm sure I gave him £18 for it .. well possibly £20 .. or maybe I just said I would and then forgot to pay !! I got my second copy from William 'Bill' Tuthill who wrote the tune and was the original lead vocalist before his efforts, deemed not to be good enough, resulted in the arrival of Cecil Washington I was amazed that nobody had contacted Bill before and recall the unusual telephone conversation when I first called Female answers .. Mrs Tuthill AR .. Hello can I speak to William Tuthill please Mrs T .. Oh I'm sorry but you can't AR .. OK is he out .. shall I call back later Mrs T ..no .. he's dead so won't be back .. what did you want to talk to him about AR .. I'm sorry to hear that .. I wanted to talk to him about his music career when he lived in Detroit Mrs T .. oh ok you want William Jr. .. I'll get you his number So William Jr had 2 copies .. a file copy & a play copy .. after a lot of negotiation he agreed to sell the play copy and would post it once he had moved house which was imminent .. I paid the money and waited patiently .. after a few follow up calls he told me he'd lost the play copy in the house move but so would have to send the file copy The postman knocks on the door and hands me a jiffy bag ... no cardboard or anything to protect the 45 .. just a fragile record inside a jiffy bag .. I thought here we go again this will be like another copy of the Counts on Shrine .. smashed into 6 pieces .. what sort of person would think you can send a record from the USA to the UK in a jiffy bag .. so I was prepared for the worst but it had survived intact and a mint copy to boot .. happy days In addition I asked Bill to write out the lyrics for me .. and as a bonus the 45 is in it's 'birth sleeve' (I hate that term) .. which has written on it 'The Tuthill Family' .. John M would be so proud Andy- 127 comments

Fair enough ... appreciate the clarification Andy

I’m intrigued by the inclusion of Stan Williams in the Shrine group ... having spoken to the other 3 members he was never mentioned so be interested to know where that information has come from .. maybe they just forgot ! In addition Harry Bass was in a group called the Epsilons but they never recorded under that name ...they then became the Toreadors recording for Pawn and Midas (NY Label) .. and then as the Matadors on Keith in addition to providing the BVs on ‘She’s All Right’ by Jackie Wilson and the Ray Pollard recordings for Shrine Andy

I’m pretty sure there’s a rare soul valuations, or similar, Facebook group where you can ask about current values ... that might provide pretty quick and sensible guidance Andy
-
I've never looked into it given that Tim Ashibende got there first so I assumed he'd have asked all those questions ... Dave Brown's notes for the Uplook CD doesn't even mention the DoS .. so no info there I'm afraid Andy
