  5. i'll tell you what I know .. which is not much.. Many many years ago I visited Gordon Frewin, then Head of UK Motown, at his London office. I was taken there by a London-based fellow Motown collector who has been a friend of mine since the 80's Gordon had not long returned from LA where he'd been cataloguing and doing archive research on the Motown masters that had been relocated to the West Coast. during my visit Gordon gave me 2 records. The first was the Marvin Gaye 45 of 'This Love starved Heart Of Mine' in the picture sleeve. Obviously I knew the track but, up to that point, was totally unaware of its existence on a 45. Gordon explained the circumstances around its existence, which is now common knowledge. As far as I'm aware this was the first copy that landed on to a 'Northern Soul' DJ turntable when I played it a few weeks later at a local gig. I recall showing it to Roger Banks, John Philips and an Elephant who were bemused to say the least. Soon after further copies surfaced from a LA Motown Source The other 45 was Syreeta. Gordon was very clear that the track was halted at promo stage and very few had been distributed to the usual suspects. I don't recall if he specified the number but he did infer it was the standard promo mail out. So if that was 25 or 50 I can't say but he did say it was very unlikely I'd get the chance to get another ... so a statement not supported given John has auctioned 2, and a few others have it, but enough of a steer to indicate it would be a tough 45 That's it Andy
  6. Multi-coloured ... I recall seeing it very vividly as I'd never seen it before Andy
  7. Tamiko Jones - Golden World yellow issue does exist .. my first sight was a Soul Bowl list and I have held a copy Anderson Bros - GSF stock copy ... yes definately ... Pete Halas, from Spalding, had one in the 70's and I've seen 2 since .. didn't Johnny M auction one ?? Honey Bees & Just Bros on Wand - never pressed according to Don Mancha. He told me deal was done but delivering the tapes was delayed cos of the race riots and when he got them there they eventually changed their minds ... I've never done the research to determine in the time lines all match up Andy
  8. Al had both Dave ... 'Keep On Lovin Me' inst that I seem to think was credited to the Marvelettes and the 'True Fine Boy' acetate. Archive research has yet to identify a vocal track recording so not much chance a contemperaneous vocal will ever surface. The track was 'released' on Bari but i don't think they ever got over to the UK in any numbers at all with the stock all being left with the man who had them done in Detroit. Obviously a handful came back .. can anybody confirm my recollection or determine if the Bari 45 is actually pretty tough to locate Andy
  9. Tony Is that the track with a full complement of the Temptations on BVs .. if so it is indeed a goodie Andy
  10. My recollection, supported by contemperaneous documentation (when I find it) would indicate that Ginger had this covered up as The Gems - You keep putting the burning on Andy
  11. This was a Soul Sam exclusive for a long time ... can't recall if it was 77 or 78 but I have loads of cassettes from that time and will have captured one of it's first plays so with a bit of detective work I could pin point the date Andy
  12. As I recall this was indeed first played at Cleethorpes, as described by Mr Manship, and was covered-up as 'Tried to find him' credited to Ruth Brown ... When it was released in the UK as a 7" single, and please give me some dispensation for my age, i think the UK release album had been long deleted. At the time I worked in a Record Shop and the release, i'm sure, was announced in the trade mag 'Music Week' ... now my memory tells me that there was some sort of contractual problem, or argument, with the group that made a straight release of the track problematic and therefore Capitol decided to just record a new version in order to 'cash in' on the demand Now there is a slight possibility that i might still have the press clipping from Music Week .. I'll look through my stuff Regards Andy
  13. this is my fave Andy
  14. "Is it the flip to GIVE ME THE LOVE? or is it a different record?" Same 45, GMTL is the flip A nice Pam Sawyer / Lori Burton tune Andy
  15. Roger K - You'll Be Alone - Birth 102 played a bit in the late 70's c/u as The Velours Andy
  16. Ady If my memory serves me correctly the Motown band track that was used was "Do The See Saw" by The Contours, written by Sylvester Potts & Billy Gordon, recorded 20 Nov 1963. Apparently scheduled for an LP 'Dance with The Contours' I'll have a recording somewhere around here Andy
  17. There was a thread about this a few years ago and this question was asked I called Teddy Vann to try and find the answer but he couldn't remember her name or any details Andy
  18. They are the same take but one does last longer than the other ... I'm 99% sure it's the Southern Artist release that has a 1 second, or so, longer fade than the Bell release Andy
  19. Excellent stuff Rob Fascinating regards Andy
  20. This used to be a tough one ... not so sure if it's still as hard to find Andy
  21. This probably doesn't quite qualify as issues are harder but in this format it's unusual Andy
  22. I think Joe Moore might be one I didn't even know it existed until he showed it to me .... guess it never got past promo stage as it was issued on Verve Andy
  23. Many happy memories for me .. I loved the ballroom It was my first ever all nighter in 1975 ... had just turned 13 .. it changed my life Andy
  24. Thanks Chalky .... James Chavis, who owned Chavis & Candi Records, was based in Wilmingtom Silas Phifer did record for him as lead on the Mellow Fellows, the embryonic Mello Souls, on Candi James last saw Silas in the late 70's, as Chalky has said Silas ended up in a nursing home, and has since died. When I last spoke to Mr Chavis Jnr he said his dad, James, was also in a home and despite being 92 still had his memory fully intact On the occasions I spoke to James he was not interested enough to go into any great detail about his time in the music industry. Not exactly rude but you had to prepare yourself to call him back Marc Gordon was just the same As I recall the Empires (Candi), Mellow Fellows (Candi) & Matadors (Chavis) had strong family links, brothers/cousins etc, and group members would move from one to another as required Andy
