  1. The Temptations - Last one out is broken hearted Andy
  2. Yes.... Sidney Hall, a former Shrine artist, was in the Flamingo's when that track was recorded Andy
  3. The only person who has ever met him from the UK is Gilly. He died many years ago and Ive never seen a picture. I have contact with his son but based on my experience you won't get much of a response if you contacted him andy
  4. That is true and it's sitting on my shelf Andy
  5. There's always a back story to tracks such as this .. so I'll share what I know In the 80's a Motown collector associate of mine purchased a number of acetates and tapes that had been retrieved from the Woodward building in Detroit. The tracks on the tapes were by various artists and were what we called 'safety copies' .. meaning you could listen to them but weren't able to move them on as they had 'bleeps' superimposed on the tracks at regular intervals throughout the songs. Our understanding is that these were tapes that writers or producers could take home to listen to and had therefore left the 'security' of the tape library and studio. One of the songs on these multi-artist tapes was ' I Can't Stop This Feeling'. The tape was damaged on the intro but recovered in time before the main vocal started. A number of the long-time Motown collectors listened to it and the conclusion was that it must be a demo, probably by the writer or a random singer, as opposed to any known Motown artist. My friend, at a later date, gave a copy to Ian Levine. who was very excited by it. He 'repaired' the damage by doing a piano studio overdub and proclaimed that it was a Contours recording and he knew because he had worked with them and knew their voices up close and personal, so in his mind there was no doubt. That is a difficult position to disagree with but none of us are deaf and not one of us had ever reached the same conclusion. So ... my view is a simple one. It almost certainly is not the Contours or any other obvious recording artist from that era. We have, as far as I can recall (need to check) ever identified the songwriter(s) ... but is is more than likely that the writer is the singer ... it could be James Dean or William Weatherspoon ... the songs is in their style.. but in reality who knows And in answer to the original question ..... No it isn't available on vinyl or any official CD release Regards Andy Rix
  6. The Gwen Owens - One or the other - is actually Lela Martin - You can't have your cake - Melatone Tina Roberts was a few years later and C/U as the Honey Bees - He's just gotta be my baby ....... care of Mr Raistrick
  7. This is cool ... can't wait for LaBrenda's 'In Twenty Words Or Less' ... it's been a favourite of mine for years ... I wonder if they ever meant to use this for a contest ... 'In Twenty Word Or Less Write I Love You Because .....' ... fantastic stuff Andy
  8. With reference to the Inspirations - 'No One Else Can Take Your Place' on Breakthrough .... I had protracted, and ultimately fruitless, discussions about this with Joey Jefferson. He maintained that the Breakthrough one-sided press was done to quickly test the market with a 'proper' release scheduled for Mutt & Jeff with 'You'll Never Make The Grade' on the flip ..... He maintained he got as far as pressing white promo copies but then cancelled the release. He claimed he still had copies and it was one of those I was after. Despite on the ground assistance from Jerry Williams no deal ever happened and I never got to see the 45. I was never really convinced that he was being honest ..... I think he was just messing with my head. If the 45 did exist on Mutt & Jeff I figured we would have known about it through Neil Rushton's dealings with him. But then stranger things have happened ....... Andy
  9. He did .... I phoned to reserve it for him cos he wasn't going to be free when the phone lines opened Andy
  10. I think Ted could be correct .... A gold Professionals Andy .....but maybe it's Len Barry 'I'll Always Need You' C/W another of the LP dance tracks on a Brunswick 7" ... Not likely tho
  11. We could go on forever .... And I think we should cos the guessing is interesting It could be anything ...... As I said in an earlier post Bernie Williams on Del-Val is theoretically possible as is Don Gardner 'Cheating Kind' on Tru-Glo-Town ..... It was a TGT recording that Gloria Toote leased to Joe Van Leer for release on Sedgrick .... She could have pressed it on TGT prior to that deal ...... Not dissimilar to the Joe Moore I have on TGT that was released on Verve that Joe gave me ... Only one I've even seen My point is it could be anything really from the 'Classic' era Let's carry on guessing ... It's fun Andy
  12. I guess an example would be something like Bernie Williams 'Ever Again' on Del-Val That would make sense Andy
  13. I'd say it was Arthur Fenn ... covered-up as Pookie Hudson I recall that when I visited Herb Bernstein he had the master tape on his shelf but didn't have any recollections about Elbie Andy
  14. Haven't had chance to read all of his thread as I'm out of the UK with little spare time. I'll contact Nate Fortier again when I get back but he had a massive stroke a couple of years ago and had lost the ability to talk coherently. His son was trying to get him to communicate about the 45. It dragged on for some time and I let my efforts slide but I'll give it another go Motown and Shrine used an ondioline which was an early version of a synth so an instrument able to produce such a sound was available in the 60s Andy
  15. Pat Lawless & Connie Bailey are two of them Andy
  16. It is one of my old spins from Scenesville days .... I purchased it blind from Frank Merrill in the mid 90s for about $8 on the strength of thinking 'No Quittin' was a pretty good 45. I'd actually mis-placed it for a few years but found it in a box I thought I'd emptied Andy
  17. I'll send one when I get home Andy
  18. iii I agree Ady ... A sublime selection of femme songs.. I have seen the the Naomi story ... What a sad situation that is Trust all is good with you Andy
  19. The benchmark that Tim set with his fanzine has certainly been something that many of us have aspired to reach. In my opinion he is one of the unsung giants of the soul scene who has done so much ...... But has always been, I'm sure through choice, in the background. If you don't have these publications you should buy them immediately I cannot recommend or praise them enough Andy
  20. Steve Is it safe to assume you've contacted Ray Dahrouge and Tash Howard ...... PM me if I can help you reach out to any NY based individuals who might have some association Andy
  21. There was no master tape of the track .... Only a basic band track. The only known copy at the time was mine and the sound quality of the vinyl was not the best. When we got to final track listings a couple of things had to be sacrificed due to space ...... Linda & Vistas - Bad Apple was one and Tighten Up was another ... Basically cos it just sounded too rough Andy
  22. I think that's my old copy .. infact the first one to turn up. I got it from Maxx Kidd and sold it on for £1500 when I got my second copy in the late-ish 90s, in better condition Quite shocked at the price it reached Andy
  23. Actually the Ady track was Betty Logan - 'You've got a lot to learn' ..... Wonder what happened to that or what label it was on ..... Anyway I changed the forename to Ginger cos the record label colour was orange .... Very strange Andy
  24. Actually it was me ! ....... I got it from a soul collector in Leeds who had a lot of New Orkeans stuff .... I called it Ginger Logan as Ady was playing something credited to that name and they had a similar sound ..... I didn't do much with it so eventually moved it on to Kenny Andy
