Articles: 50 Years Ago Today the Mello Souls
Andy Rix replied to Andy Rix's topic in Front Page News & Articles
Hi Chalky I think James T was in the Mellow Fellows ... but I'd need to go through my stuff again to pin down the ebb and flow of who was in what group & when And just to clarify that the photo is of the 'teenagers' who were the band on the recording Andy- 12 comments

50 years ago today four guys drove from Wilmington, Delaware, to Frank Virtue’s studio located on 1618 N. Broad St, Philadelphia to record their debut single as the Mello Souls. Silas, Fisher, James T and Randy were accompanied by their manager Mr Marshall and George Lewis, who co-wrote both of the songs. A group of local teenagers, Keith, Kenny, Larry, Johnny and Frank provided the music. ‘I Got My Pride’, which featured Silas on lead, was cut in one take and this was the song that was pushed as the A side. ‘We Can Make It’, with Fisher on lead and James T providing the response vocal, took 3 takes as Mr Marshall couldn’t quite synchronise his tambourine with Keith’s guitar intro; an intro that he acknowledges was inspired by ‘You Keep Me Hanging On’ which had been released five months previously by The Supremes Despite local promotion and live shows the record didn’t make the impact that had been hoped for. The disappointment felt by the group was further compounded by a failed audition at Motown and as a result they simply dissolved. For us the rest as they say is history Andy

No help on the question but as random information Dale Warren told me that the inspiration for calling the record label Sidra was because the guy who financed it ... Can't recall the exact details just now ... Had an affinity with the Meditteranian sea so named the label after the Gulf of Sidra ..... He said it created some interest with the FBI given its proximity to Libya .... To be honest you couldn't make it up ... I actually thought he was joking but apparently not Andy

Good shout ... couldn't see the Carol King book in there Andy

Little Ann Who Are You Trying To Fool
Andy Rix replied to waterfall_manc's topic in Look At Your Box
You did him the alternate version with the funny guitar in the break .... I don't think that version has ever been released ... Sound quality was a bit low-fi Andy -

I posted these pictures in the Gucci thread ... maybe not the best place to do that So let's talk about his genius I do expect Gilly to share his memories Andy

On holiday ... was touring South India ... back home now where it is a little cooler

Couple of pics of Duke Browner ...solo one is when he was 22 & the other with his wife, Jeanette, and son Barney Jr
-
I contacted the son of Duke Browner today about the Gucci promo ...... I've tried to talk to him for a number of years about collecting royalties but he does not seem interested. he is very polite but that's as far as it goes. he said he has no 45s and no master tapes I will keep on trying to touch base with him if only to see that Duke's wife gets some money Andy

The Loss of one of our own Mick Howard R.I.P.
Andy Rix replied to Dave Thorley's topic in All About the SOUL
I can only echo what has already been said .. I remember Mick with great fondness ... A truly truly sad day Andy -
He did sing on 'Do It To Me' but I thought that was the only one Andy
-
This is sad news indeed and his passing not long after his one-time sister-in-law, Miss Ray, makes it somewhat more poignant. as you say Dave he wasn't a familiar name to many outside the soul world but that doesn't diminish his talent and incredibly long and productive career. may he rest in peace Andy

We can never be absolutely sure but I would suggest Armin Steiner's Sound Recorders Studio in L.A. Jerry Long would have been the link between Motown and Kent Harris given that he was producing and arranging on some of the Jobete tunes e.g. Paris ... Sleepless Nights (Doc) Andy
-
Brenda was first .... I think we can look to Jerry Long for the recycling of the backing track Andy
-
I too have subscribed to the releases ... It must be a logistical challenge for the guys to keep to a release schedule so far in advance ... None of us know what problems they might encounter along the way I do understand the frustration felt when enquiries aren't responded to but I think we should all feel assured that Mark will do whatever he can to sort things out even though it is not within his direct control Andy
-
It's a version of the Willows - My Kinda Guy (MGM) .... I think the Denise version was sourced from Detroit based tapes and came out on UK Kool Kat ... Somebody can confirm that Gilly will know the full story I'm sure Andy

This was a white label test press 45 Ady sent me ... I took it to Cleethorpes and asked Little Ann to annotate it which she duly did To me it is priceless Andy
