I like almost everything The Knickerbockers released, but this track has always left me stone cold. Sounds like third-rate Elvis Presley to my ears. And I like him as well...

I don't get it. What is so dreadful about the Al Johnson 45 on Burt? Sure, the "Sittin' Around" side is pretty bland... but "Soul Time" is so jam packed with punch, energy and overall grittyness that I find it hard not to love it. It hasn't got that "northern" tempo but that has never mattered to me. I love it. Not at £125 though...
-
I've only read about this compilation earlier. It's called "Voces Negras" and was released on the Impacto label in Spain and a couple of the tracks (but not all) are by Pic & Bill. It's usally seen for sale at £10 or less. As far as I know, only these tracks are by Pic & Bill: THE SOUL OF A MAN ALL I WANT IS YOU SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH MY BABY BABY COME BACK Any chance of you putting up some clips of the other tracks? I CAN'T STAND LIVING WITH HER PUT A LITTLE LOVE WHAT HAVE YOU DONE THE HAVES ARE HIGH TODAY YESTERDAY HERO OH I FEEL GOOD EVERY MINUTE EVERY HOUR THAT FEELING IS GONE Would be nice if any of those are by Pic & Bill as well.
-
That's "Baby Come Back" by Pic & Bill. LP-only.
-
The above is "Help Me". The following is "Love Addict" on Arctic (fantastic tune in my opinion ): https://www.soulclub.org/stream/Honey_&_The...Love_Addict.ram

There's loads of stuff. Just grabbed a bunch of 45s from my 70s/80s section of my DJ case and came up with: King Tutt - You've got Me Hung Up - FUN CITY Jackey Beavers - Trying To Get Back To You Girl - DADE South Shore Commission - We're On The Right Track - WAND Las Vegas Connection - Give Me Your Love - HEP' ME Majik - Back Into Your Heart - HI Charles Jackson - I'm Gonna Get Your Love - CAPITOL Grey & Hanks - Now I'm Fine - RCA Honey Cone - Somebody Is Always Messing Up A Good Thing - HOT WAX O.V. Wright - Into Something (Can't Shake Loose) - HI And indeed, Bileo, Curtis, Rare Pleasure, Four Below Zero are all up there as well. Love that pounding stuff.
-
Two great sides on this one. For those who aren't familiar with them, check these sound clips out:
-
Due to this being the first release on Tamla and the fact that their distribution outside of the Detroit area at that time wasn't exactly top notch, it was leased to United Artists as soon as it took off locally. Released on January 21st 1959 on Tamla and then released February 18th 1959 on United Artists. The UA issue went on to become a big hit, #6 R&B and #30 Pop.
-
Flip over that Steelers 45 for the in my opinion superior "I'm Sorry". A very fine piece of soul that perhaps can be termed as "crossover". Worth £2.50 of anyones money.
-
Here's a soundclip of Noah on Candy-Stix for those of you who'd like to hear it. Utter, utter garbage in my opinion with a dreadful vocal delivery. Is luckily going down in price very fast.
-
It's usually $75-$125 on eBay. Also, Craig Moerer has got two copies right now at $150 each: https://www.recordsbymail.com/artistPage.ph...+GOLD+REVUE&s=S

"I Need You" is a decent pounding tune indeed. The flipside, "So In Love With You", is the better side in my opinion though. Not an easy 45 to find but seems quite unknown so still in the £25-£40 region price wise. By the way, I have a very nice two-part instrumental by Skip August called "Shindig USA" on the TeeVee label. Skip wrote "I Need You". Wasn't there some Skip August 45s on Starway as well? -
There must be some difference in the run-out groove details, they can not have pressed both versions with the same stamper.
-
Check out eBay if you're after a copy. There seems to be practically no, or extremely slim demand for either of the sides. An issue copy sold less than a week ago for $11.20 (yes, an issue with "Refuse..." on one of the sides and "Cissy" on the other). This has happened quite a lot in the recent past with this 45, issue copies hardly ever sell for more than $25 on eBay.
-
About £5-£10. Try AngloAmerican, I know they've had loads of copies at £6 each. Good artist.

Here's the complete list of tunes for those of you who are interested: 01. Cleo Randle - Big City Lights - STA-SET 02. Gino Parks - Fire - TAMLA 03. Al Johnson - Soul Time - BURT 04. Jon Thomas - Tizzy - JUNIOR 05. Jackie Milton - Step By Step - DE-VEL 06. Johnny Copeland - Slow Walk You Down - BOOGALOO 07. Moses - I Got My Mind Together - PIEDMONT 08. Willie Rogers - Everything You Touch (Turns To Love) - AMG 09. Sam Cooke - You Send Me / Bring It On Home To Me (live) - RCA LP/CD 10. Cleo Jackson Randle - Life In Heaven Is Free - CHECKER Both 01 and 10 are by the same artist.
-
Paul is totally right (apart from Moses being dreadful... ). 06 is Johnny Copeland's fine flipside to "Danger Zone" on Boogaloo (a Huey P. Meaux label and a quite obscure 45 it seems). No cash prizes, I'm afraid... But here's an updated list: 01. Cleo Randle - Big City Lights - STA-SET 02. 03. 04. 05. 06.

Thanks for the comments! Track 01 is indeed Cleo Randle on Sta-Set, and that clip of her on "The!!! Beat" is great, definitely check it out. Track 06 is not James Carr. The Sam Cooke track is taken from his newly re-released and remastered "One Night Stand - Live At The Harlem Square Club" CD on RCA/LEGACY. It's a truly revelatory and absolutely excellent listen and one of my favourite albums of all time. It's got that same kind of energy all the way through and it sounds nothing like his studio recordings from that time. Just full-on bust-it-open screaming and shouting for 35 minutes. Definitely do check it out. I love it!!! Can be had cheap from Amazon: https://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B...9699114-8657206 OK, so far: 01. Cleo Randle - Big City Lights - STA-SET 02. 03. 04. 05. 06. 07. 08. 09. Sam Cooke - You Send Me / Bring It On Home To Me (live) - RCA LP/CD 10. Some more guesses/suggestions or shall I reveal the rest?

Just prepared this part-quiz part-sharing thingie for another soul/funk forum I'm on and thought that perhaps someone here is interested as well... I just threw up ten MP3s on my server of some 45s (and one album cut) that I've been playing a lot lately. I'm not claiming that these are my "discoveries", that they're the best things since sliced bread (not that I'm a big fan of sliced bread, I prefer to slice it myself, but you get the point...) or anything like that. Just some tunes I enjoy. Not much of it, if any, is straight "northern", but it's all soul in some shape and well... Here they are if you'd like to check them out: 01. Moody, moody, big voiced Chicago soul. [HERE] 02. Frantic r&b with proto-funk breaks. [HERE] 03. More frantic southern stuff. [HERE] 04. Instrumental, organ-heavy mayhem. [HERE] 05. Mellow, mid-tempo crossover. [HERE] 06. Moody, deep soul from a well known artist on a tiny label. [HERE] 07. Uptempo, slightly funky early 70s with a slightly annoying intro. [HERE] 08. Pounding early 70s soul dancer out of Ohio. [HERE] 09. One of the most influential soul/r&b artists ever. You need to hear this if you haven't. [HERE] 10. Moody, brooding gospel ballad. [HERE] That's it. Hope you like some of them. I'll post the artists/titles later if you're interested
