  1. And, actually, a pretty decent version of Tina Charles "I Love To Love" on the flipside! Who recorded it first? Al or Tina?
  2. The let's-celebrate-Elvis-Presley-thread and the mention of "Burning Love" once again got me thinking about the songwriter of that tune, Dennis Linde, and the songs he's written that has been recorded by soul artists. I've been thinking about compiling a list of Dennis Linde tunes recorded by soul artists, or indeed by artists in any genres, but before I get started it would be nice to know if such a list already exists? Does anyone of you know?
  3. I persoally need 192kbps at LEAST to get anywhere near "good" sound quality. Crank up the volume on a 128kbps file and it sounds terrible especially at the high-end. I definitely agree with that. I usually use much less kbps (64-96) and mono sound files for my portable MP3 or mobile phone. But... Why be satisfied with that it sounds good in the car? Or your mobile phone? Cassettes sounds utter crap as well, and I've hapily used them during my entire life, but I would never ever buy a pre-recorded one. It's simply just not good enough and the same goes for MP3s.
  4. I will not ever pay money for a digital soundfile unless it's supplied to me in file format encoded with a lossless audio codec. Uncompressed WAV is the way to go in my opinion. The world just needs cheaper and higher capacity hard drives and faster internet connections. I'm convinced that we'll get there eventually.
  5. Both versions have sub-par vocals in my opinion, but I simply can't stand Virgil Henry's vocal style so if I have to choose I'd definitely go for Cookie Woodson.

  7. Back in February I guest-DJed at the Function Soul Club here in my hometown of Malmoe, Sweden and in conjunction with that I put together an 80-minute MP3-mix of sounds that I liked a lot at that moment. On saturday the 25th of August I will guest-DJ at Function again and after that I'll become a resident DJ at the club and will help my friends Helena, Jonte and Joppe to organise the events. So I thought it was time for me to put together a new 80-minute MP3-mix for you to listen to. :-) You can download the NEW mix on the following link: https://www.shingaling.com/SebastiansFunctionMix20070814.mp3 SEBASTIAN'S FUNCTION MIX - AUGUST 2007 Chain Reaction - Dance Freak (re-edit) - SOUND OF NEW YORK, USA (12") 400 Years Of What - Get Down People - COUNTERPART Jamie Ross - Try My Love - CAT Continental Showstoppers - Not Too Young - SEVENTY SEVEN Brief Encounter - What About Love - CAPITOL Music Makers - Rock That Stuff - DASH Cheyenne - Come Back To Me - SHADY BROOK (LP) Jimmy Chambers - Doin' Alright - CUBE Falcons - Good Good Feeling - BIG WHEEL King Earnest - You Gonna Miss Me - SONIC Fredrick Knight - Steppin Down - MAXINE Temprees - I'll Live Her Life - WE PRODUCE Barbara & Gwen - Right On - NEW CHICAGO SOUND Sun - Just A Minute Of Your Time - CAPITOL Las Vegas Connection - Running Back To You - HEP' ME Charles Pryor - What They Doin' (Funky Junkie) - DOUBLE 07 Brenda George - I Can't Stand It (I Can't Take It No More) - KENT Turnpikes - Cast A Spell - CAPITOL Charles Spurling - Let Me Be (A Steppin' Soul) - KING Saxie Russell - El Monkey - RAN-DEE Rhonda Davis - Can You Remember - DUKE Bliss - Groovin' (On A Love Song) - CITY VIEW Allan Harris & Perpetual Motion - Get Ready - EXACT CHANGE Fantastic Aleems - Hooked On Your Love - PANORAMA Southroad Connection - You Like It, We Love It - MAHOGANY Evans Pyramid - Never Gonna Leave You - FUNK (12") My OLD mix from February, which many of you probably already have heard, is still available and can be downloaded on the following link: https://www.shingaling.com/SebastiansFunctionMix20070223.mp3 SEBASTIAN'S FUNCTION MIX - FEBRUARY 2007 Arnie Love & The Loveletts - We Had Enough - TAP (12") Little Beaver - Listen To My Heartbeat - CAT Prince Johnny Robinson - That Girl Is Rated X - ANDEE Cojo - Play It By Ear - DESTINY Bob Williams - I'm Alright - NAD-LYN Ray Barretto - Together - FANIA Odyssey - Battened Ships - MOWEST (LP) Skip Jackson And The Shantons - I'm On To You Girl - DOT-MAR Sandra Phillips - Words - ASSOCIATED acetate (unissued) Angela Davis - My Love (Is So Strong) - FLAMING ARROW Swan Silvertones - If You Believe Your God Is Dead - HOB IS GOSPEL Billy Nichols - Shake A Leg - SUE Plair - Brother Man On The Corner - TARSAN Christian Plicque - Hot Foxy Woman - LECAM Vance And Suzzanne - I Can't Get Along Without You - VANTON (12") Larry McGee Revolution - The Burg - BOOGIE BAND Cappy & Stonewall - Bad News - LOVE CAPP Eastside Connection - Over Please - RAMPART Cecil Lyde - I'll Make It On My Own - ALWEST J.G. 8. I'm really looking forward to the Larry Banks Family one. I've mentioned it before and I'll say it again: the amount of musically high-quality CDs being released at the moment (and over the past year or so) is staggering. And they are just getting better and better and more interesting. Top stuff being released practically every month!
  9. Nice to see that this sold so quick. And rightly so as it's not a 45 you see often for sale. I remember that I used to love this but don't think I've heard it for at least 4-5 years. Have to go dig out my copy. Nice piece of pounding garage-rock-meets-soul.
  10. There is a "correct" tune by Tommy Andre called "One More Try". The "Hold Back The Tears" track is included on some of the WDJ copies of Tommy Andre's "One More Try". Both 45s has got the same instrumental tune on the b-side. Check the following out where we discussed this 45 at length: /index.php?showtopic=47065 It might very well be Don Gardner, and it does sound like him, but I'm not taking it for granted. I've checked out the following 50s/60s releases, but neither of them is the "mispressed Tommy Andre" tune: Ward Singers - Hold Back The Tears - Savoy 4071 (1956) Delacardos - Hold Back The Tears - United Artists 310 (1961) Shockettes - Hold Back The Tears - Symbol 914 (1961) Little Milton - Can't Hold Back The Tears - Checker 1105 (1965) I first thought that it could be the Shockettes tune, as it was released on Symbol which was affiliated with Broadway, but it isn't.
  11. It's quite rare, in-demand and a good tune so £150 is reasonable. Used to be £10-£25 a couple of years ago, but back then few people seemed to know that there were two issues of this 45 in existance - one mispressed and one correctly pressed with Tommy Andre on it - and usually sold it as the "proper" Tommy Andre "One More Try" cut which is a solid £10-£15 piece.
  12. It was as far as I know covered-up as Don Gardner and at some point distributed as a RealAudio file credited to Don Gardner. It does sound a bit like Don Gardner, but do you have any facts that back up that it's him? Was it properly issued as by Don Gardner on any label? Love this tune.
  13. I've put together an MP3-mix featuring the rocksteady/ska/reggae tracks from my current auctions for those of you who don't have the time to dig through the eBay listings. 19. That was my point. I never have problems selling rare pop/rock stuff. But it's only the rare and collectable stuff that goes for money with these artists. Pop/rock collecting is (and especially concerning the artists listed above), in my experience, primarily driven by a wish to own genuinely RARE and collectable releases by an artist (whose material is already familiar to you). There is no dancefloor/DJ demand and a fairly common £10 record by U2 will NOT be worth £100 next month - a thing which can easily happen with soul/funk/r&b records. Another thing is that a lot of pop/rock collectors collect strange picture sleeve issues and mis-print pressings of music they probably already have on 20 other records at home. It's much easier to write (and dare I say, more interesting to read) articles about this kind of behaviour and it's very profitable for sellers because you can sell THE SAME RECORDINGS over and over and over to the same pool of buyers simply because it's a rarer or more unusual pressing/picture sleeve/lower-limited-edition-number etc. I agree. They really should give soul/r&b/funk more space, and most importantly have someone taking care of it who KNOWS WHAT THEY'RE DOING, can recommend "upcoming pieces" and preferably are ahead of their game and don't only report about what records have sold for. Etc. etc. etc.
  20. Only about 5-6 hours left on these auctions now. Thanks for looking! :-)
  21. As for "regional" collections within my collection, I have a thing for New Orleans and especially the ALON label (which is suprsingly hard to complete, not that I'm fanatic about it or am trying too hard...but you know... ). A couple of minutes ago I recieved the last missing Eldridge Holmes 45 on ALON that I didn't have (#9013), and FINALLY also "Call The Sheriff" by Senator Jones on WHURLEY BURLEY (which has eluded me for years, and then all of a sudden two copies turn up in less than a week ). As for artists: Pic & Bill has got a pretty large section in my 45s collection.
  22. I suspect that most people don't know it as it's a fairly unknown and extremely rare 45. Here are some scans and soundclips, perhaps you'll get some action now. (best to mention that the following are from my old copy and not Matt's copy) Paul_Walters___I_Know_What_Love_Is_All_About_1_.mp3 Paul_Walters___She_Put_Me_Down.mp3

  24. Just out of interest I did a search on eBay for all records listed in the "records" category that has ended during the past 14 days, and then I sorted them by highest price. Check it out, quite interesting: https://search-completed.ebay.com/_Records_...slcZ2QQsbrsrtZd
  25. I'm sure there are some collectors of these "hip pocket" discs, but there doesn't seem to be any "real money" in it unless you've got something by the major collectable artists like Beatles (plus Apple Records and related), Jimi Hendrix, Abba, Doors, Madonna etc.
