I have no idea actually. Will amend my post above to "second issue" to keep myself out of trouble. The silver label issue should in any case not be of interest to someone chasing the original release.

Released on the PAY-TONS label with catalogue number 1002. The original has got a gold label and the "second issue" has got a silver label. I personally prefer his "I'm Available" (issued as PAY-TONS 1001 and also picked up by TANGERINE).

I think it might be the scanner as well. But can you please check what the matrix details are on your copy and post them up?

Just adjust the tracking weight and anti-skating settings to fit your own stylus/cartridge when you replace it. Takes about 30 seconds per turntable if you know how to do it and have done it a couple of times earlier. Always bring a blank disc to be able to properly adjust the anti-skating. Otherwise I agree with you, it can make a lot of damage to your records if you just replace the stylus and keep going with the previous setting.

Are there any differences in the matrix details? Or pressed from the original stamper? Does anyone have photos of the matrix details and scans of the labels on BOTH the original and the repress? Would be great to compare them side by side.

I know, I wasn't having a go at what you said. Was just saying that a carver shouldn't be considered an original just because you own the original 45.

What format anyone on here prefers is not what's up for discussion. It's about whether you should play original vinyl only or not. I fail to see how a carver of a record you've got at home remains an original in a way that some tracks on a CD (recorded from the original 45s that you've got at home) does not?

Why not put the entire playbox on a couple of CDs and play the tunes from those instead? The exact same thing in my opinion, just a different format.

I guess you're right. I usually DJ at venues with top quality sound systems and the drop in sound quality when a carver is played is noticeable.

Frequency range is the amount of "bass", "mid" and "high" frequencies on the recording. Carvers are generally very heavy on the "mid" frequencies, which results in a tinny sound. When DJing with a carver you have to crank up the "bass" and "hi" a lot on the mixer which usually results in feedback and poor sound reproduction. If that's not important to you - for home listening or DJing - then you will not have a problem with carvers I guess. But that kind of stuff is important to a lot of people and to say that carvers sound better than the original source just because you don't care to actually compare them (or think that it's important to do such a thing) makes for slightly misleading information in my opinion.

Have you done the test? Does your carvers have louder volume than the original 45s? Does your carvers have a better frequency range? This is very important stuff when DJing with records.

The carvers are pressed with very low volume and a narrow frequency range - which reduces the sound quality. A carver is not an identical copy of the master source, they compromise the audio quality quite a bit.

We've had this discussion earlier and we obviously disagree. I have never heard a carver that sounds as good as the original source (or anywhere near it). Have you actually compared them side by side? You can do a test like this: record the original 45 as a WAV to your computer, then without altering the volume or anything on your amplifier, record the carver of the same tune into the same WAV-file. That way you can easily compare if the levels are different - both as far as frequencies and volume goes.

I think that the video is fake. I just checked and the video clip plays the version that can be found on the 1974 album "Hell" on POLYDOR.

...and it isn't the flipside of "I'l Go Crazy" on KING 6020 either.

With that reasoning, you might as well put your LP-tracks on a CD and play them from that format. It's no different than playing them from a carver. Just bring the LPs! I mean seriously, it's not like you're going to be carting around 100+ LPs. Carrying 5-10 LPs isn't heavy. I don't get why anyone who collects original releases is interested in reissues like the Al Mason 7" releases? The 12" is the only original release, hence the only acceptable format in my opinion if you have a strict OVO policy.

What a coincidence. I was viewing Boz Scaggs clips on YouTube for probably an hour yesterday while killing time in the record store I work in. I really like him, especially the "Silk Degrees" and "Slow Dancer" albums, but his first (well, actually second) album on Atlantic which has been mentioned here is also great (check out George Freeman's deep soul version of "I'll Be Gone" on EPIC! Top stuff! ). The stuff Boz recorded and only released in Sweden back in the 60s (prior to joining Steve Miller Band) is decent as well. I sometimes play "What Can I Say", "Lowdown", "Jojo" and "Hollywood" while out DJing. Superb music. And insanely well played and produced.
