Oh and another thing Sean. Otis Clay at Just Soul definitely! Just play his Live In Japan LP and make the call!
-
Still got it is an interesting thread. I don't do many "Live" events as I have seen most of my heroes years ago. From video I would say Lee Moses and The Green Berets a.k.a Walter&The Admirations in NYC last year. Both were fantastic and definitely still had it! Lee Moses' back catalogue is phenomenal, to the point where JM is auctioning Free At Last / Got That Will which is a fabulous double-sider on Maple. I'm amazed no one has thought to bring him over to the UK. I would love to be in NYC next week listening to Darrow Fletcher. I thought Betty Lavette at Obama's inaugaration was brilliant and sure sang everybody else off the stage! I'm jealous of all those who witnessed Al Green in Sydney! Seen him live, in Church and in the studio. Singer! Cheers, Ady

Apart from John, Ady and Arthur based on Ivor's original question, influence and taste, then Richard Searling has to be up there for his DJing and Radio work. Straight DJing it has to be Butch. Gary Rushbrooke, Dave Greet, Rod Dearlove, Tim Ashibende, Dave Withers and Andy Dyson all have great taste and influence. More personally for straight out taste Gouch, Bully, Eddie Hubbard, Mick O'Donnell, Lars and Sean for all those great Sunday mornings on Solar, Cheers, Ady

Al Green: Soul Perfection...what's Your Favourite Track?
Ady Pountain replied to a topic in Look At Your Box
And as I'm in the middle of numerous box sets of 'The Wire', how about "Leave The Guns At Home". The non remixed version of "Keep On Pushing Love" which came out on CD / LP / CD Single, so should be easy to find, wins hands down versus the Joey Negro Remix. Off now, Ady -

What 20 or so posts and no "Back Up Train". Astonishing! -
Buy the Don Waller book, it's the best book on Motown I've read, Cheers, Ady

Looking back through the latest posts to answer a question. Rufus Lumley was originally from Roger Stewart who brought it to The Bear in Stoke one Friday night before Wigan Oldies All-Nighter. We always stopped off in Stoke so Wid could have gravy on his chips. Roger brought up the LP to laugh at the picture on the cover until someone, don't know who, took it up to the decks and played through the LP and found 'Stronger Than Me' and then played it over the system. It still destroy's me as a story of how a record was discovered! Cheers, Ady

You have to hear the flip to understand! Ever since I played it to him he's wanted it! Deep Soul Brilliance, Ady (No it wasn't me I've already got one).

An aside to the post about Crazy Baby and the cover-up title. I have an Abtone acetate which is another vocal of Crazy Baby, using the same backing, by Jimmy Sherman and the title, which is typed is.....My Heart's Wide Open!

A couple more. I think, and I emphasis think, I played The Allen Sisters "I'm In With The Downtown Crowd" on Canadian Quality first and The Soulettes "Bring Your Fine Self Home" on Scope in late '79 / early '80. Both came from my first ever record trip in 1979 from Martin Koppell in Toronto. Both still real rare records. I also on that trip missed by a day the second copy of Cecil Washington from that Polish fella in Detroit. Other crazy characters were John from Raleigh in NC, mad as a box of spanners, and the chanting Buddhist from Baltimore, Cheers, Ady

Thanks garethx, that's him, Cheers, Ady

I think George Pepp was George ?, come on Gilly help me out, used to DJ upstairs at Stafford. I found Sam Dees 'Lonely For You Baby' and Johnny Rodgers in John Farrells shed, £1.50 each! Freddie North 'The Hurt' came out of Rock and Roll Heaven in Orlando, before Ray Ehmen bought the store. One to forget was Debbie Dobbins which I bought from Kev Roberts for £3. They all went to Dave Thorley. And Kev if you didn't rate J.D.Bryant why didn't you sell it to me in 1983 after you taped it for me and I asked you very politely to buy it! Your Sunday afternoon tapes were always great. I agree with you, never thought of it as dance record, just loved the vocal, Cheers, Ady

Not a good day! RIP Alan. Wonderful tribute from Dave Moore. Think I'll play some Soul Records.
-
Well done to Funk-addict for his warning which put me off bidding. In cockney gangster parlance it's called 'A Long Firm'. You build up confidence in a business and then deliver the rip-off. Thanks again for the warning, Ady

Ezzie, £10 a shift, I got that in 1971! Now pull that line a little bit tighter and get some muck up here!

I think this topic has run it's damp course and should be wall tied immediately, Ady (ex hod carrier!)

Fantastic! Thanks for the posting Eddie. It never hurts to smile when your listening to Soul Music. The Guy in the dungarees singing to Marvin Gaye was priceless. I feel young all over again, Cheers, Ady

Having A Laugh. Prices Plus Paypal Fees
Ady Pountain replied to Chris Anderton's topic in Look At Your Box
Great thread with lots of different view points. It's obvious many people hate EBay and Pay Pal. EBay gives you a worldwide showcase for your sales and with Pay Pal you can move the money to your bank account within minutes of being paid. That is surely why you use their services and pay the costs. If you don't want or need these services then put your records for sale on forums such as this and only accept cash. Postage costs should reflect the service you give. Packages from Craig Moerer are a joy to receive with a $25 record in a box with 6 layers of cardboard and for some reason a couple of sheets of bubble wrap. I'm sure this keeps people coming back for more! I only use new mailers nowadays as it's quicker to pack the records than re-using old mailers from records you've received, but I have to buy them and I charge for them. Chris' original point is very valid though about asking £400 for something like Patti & The Emblems and then asking to add 4% Pay Pal fees. For high value items bank transfers via Internet Banking is the answer. I recently sent someone a few hundred quid from my bank account direct to his, at no cost, and he had a credit on his account in minutes. If you think 4% is high have you tried to get a business loan recently or checked your credit card fees? It's still fun, Cheers, Ady -

Thanks for posting that up. It illustrates the changing times that you have someone going around the neighbourhoods looking for records at yard sales and flea markets. In my experience that would never have been the case 5 - 10 years ago. I remember going to a Flea in NC in '92, held in an old tobacco warehouse, where a guy had loads of 70's albums. When I asked to look through them he told me I was the first person to ask in 2 years! Someone asked if anyone had been in the 'hood looking for records? Yep, many times. However the scarest places are the rural areas of the Southern States, you know the kind of place where 'Deliverance' is a love story! If your English they think your a Yankee, which is worse than being non-white to them good old boys, and you have to be careful. I have twice got to an address and not stopped to look for records, once in 1979 in Detriot, and in 2003 in Alabama. The first time for being white, the second time for being a Yankee. Also in Alabama in a One Horse Town I drove past The Commodores Museum, yes a Museum to Lionel Ritchie and co., doubled back to find it closed. I went next door to what I can best describe as a Cowboy store, run by a Red Indian, to find out if it ever opened. Got the usual answer 'sometimes' and then noticed a gathering of the boys across the road, pointing to my NJ registered car. Obviously left p.d.q. Great film, thoroughly enjoyed it and it makes me look forward even more to my next trip. Dave Thorley can tell you many stories from the last few years about crate digging. The one about the Chimney Sweep, who was an insatiable hoarder, is one of my favourites, Cheers, Ady

I'm pretty sure that Dave Thorley's copy was a metal acetate from Soul Bowl. He'll let us know, no doubt. Good to see you posting Gilly, welcome, Ady
