King Diamond
I was fortunate enough to pick up a copy of this incredibly soulful tune a while ago: King Diamond - A message to a black woman Besides it being a fantastic funky crossover gem that seems to be getting some spins of late and demand going up, i searched on ebay t'other day and noticed there's one on there but a different coloured label. to mine. Just wondered what the difference between the blue label and the orange/reddy pink label is? Cheers Azza

Is It Acceptable To Do A Soul Night With Cd's
Not sure you have to be 'known' on the scene to run a decent night, it goes on music policy, DJ line ups, venue and, probably a little more prominant in this thread, ethics (as in vinyl vs CD). Personally, if you put a night on playing vinyl released records on CD, i probably wouldnt attend, mainly because it usually just leads another pure classic oldies night with little variation in tunes that i cant hear elsewhere, but that's just my opinion. I think to ask someone to pay money to attend a place where they play CD's which are readily available in your own home, often for free, is unlikely to work. However you may find an audience who'd lap it up (unlikely IMO). I am a vinyl man and for me it has to be OVO but again, its just my opinion. Im sure a lot will side with me but the arguement of vinyl vs CD's is never going to end on here. What would make your night different, although from reading your post i dont think it's likely, is if you played soul tracks which were only available as MP3 or CD releases. Then it would be acceptable, although probably not very sustainable. Azza

Marvin Gaye Lucky Lucky Me
Certainly did Rich. Got the 12" at home, it's the same as the re-mixed 7" which was UK release i think, but has some rather great sounding reggae style mixes on it as a bonus. The original which has now thankfully been brought out on a legitimate issue by Neil Rushton is spectacular. First heard it on a CD Biff gave me almost 10 years ago. Took me a long time to establish that version was unreleased (shoulda probably just asked Biff and saved myself some bollock ache!!). Did a similar thing with Jackie Ross too but took less time to suss it was unreleased. Is there any difference between the singles now on general sale compared to the ones delivered with the book does anyone know? Azza

King Go Forth- Why Is It So Hated
To say a band is just cashing in, and im talking strictly in the case of KGF in this case, is a little harsh. As with most bands / musicians, they have different influences which then form their sound. That sound is then picked up by an audience. I doubt when they started out, KGF targeted the 'northern soul scene' as their audience, perhaps more funk / jazz and general soul audiences at a guess. Wouldnt say theyre trying to cash in; selling singles at £10 and only producing 500 copies. They'd clearly be cashing in if they had re-pressed the single following its success on the underground music scenes like this one. I dont personally know the band (or any associates) so this is only an assumption, but i would suggest that the band ARE in fact showing an appreciation for soul music, as you can hear their 60's/70's soul and funk influences in music they produce, would hesitate to say even emulating their idols by producing music which capulate the great sounds from yesteryear.

Rare Northern, Modern, Funk
Some nice stuff in there Dave. Someone should defo get bidding on the El Shobey, crossover of immense proportion!

King Go Forth- Why Is It So Hated
Think most 'soulies' (applying the term loosely) buy the record for t'other side, which is by no means bad but not brilliant IMO, however the 'one day' side is rather splendid, a nice blend of uptempo funk and soul with a south american vibe that just makes you wanna enjoy it!

Ebay Dropping Free Postage Scam
Not all of us can experience the bulk buy economies of scale on packaging you will benefit from though pete. Good thing is though, you're one if the honest ones who passes those benefits back to the buyer through accurate postage. Too often see established dealers marking up to more than cost on postage. Same to be said for 'bit part' sellers too of course, the margins are just a little less obvious sometimes. I think for someone who doesn't sell in large quantities, usually an occasional seller, £2 for 1st class recorded is about right due to actual cost, anything above is clearly into profit making/cash for their efforts teritory. Ironically i bought mailers/stiffners through eBay!!!!!!

Ebay Dropping Free Postage Scam
I can only talk from my actual costs when i've posted 45's within the UK so apologies if your experience differs to mine when i've used the Post Office in the UK...............but..................I have ALWAYS sent record via 1st class recorded, nothing else, and the prices tends to be £1.65 for 1st class recorded, one 45 single in record mailer with stiffner. I charge £2 for postage of a single 45 within UK (£1.65 + mailers cost which is approx 30 - 40pence per record) Completely agree with you though, greedy people mailing out abroard or even within UK are making anything between £0.70 and £3 on avg IMO on postage. Soon mounts up if they're selling 100 records a month. I think buyers and sellers (the honest one's anyway) suffered from the 'ebay postage gate' scandal, whether hit in the pocket or hit with broken unprotected records.
