actually it was a little over $900 jason, and a couple of copies went thru for that
$900 was it? I knew it was a bit much for what it was. Unless it suddenly turns amazing after the fade out I can't hear $900 worth in the clip that should be attached.
...and as for the couple going through...we discussed that, didn't we...before it ended
-
Anyone help with a value on this Modern gem please? SteveG, you out there????
One went on ebay about 2 months back for just over $800 Neil.
Personally thought that was just over $800 too much, but horses for courses.
-
Yep, have been for years. One of the better £5 'ers

Reading the brief, I don't think the author has written (or has pretended to write) a book about the Northern soul scene per se, but rather he's written a book about the drug/criminal aspect of the Northern Soul scene from a sociological point of view as a model on which to hang his argument (which looks like it's actually a wider study than just the NS scene). I suppose he's using the NS scene as a model because that was his most telling experience of the subject he's writing about. In short, it doesn't look like 'yet another' book on NS, but a book about social behaviour, crime, subculture and group mentality etc with the author using the NS scene as the model on which he's basing his study, seeing as that's what he knows. It could just as well be written using any music subculture as the model really. And by the looks of it, this is more for academic use than mass public consumption. Does look fascinating but I'm sure the magnifying glasses will be out scrutinizing every 'definitive statement' made throughout the book.

looks like a good read but a bit steep at £40!
Yeah, maybe we should break into Borders in the middle of the night and nab them in keeping with the subject matter...keep the faith and all that

Northern Soul
Drug use, crime and social identity
in the 1970s northern soul scene
Andy Wilson
(University of Sheffield)
Crime Ethnography Series
Series editors: Dick Hobbs (LSE)
and Geoffrey Pearson (Goldsmiths College)
This book provides a vivid historical
ethnography of the 1970s Northern Soul
scene, drawing on the author's personal
involvement in this as well extensive
research. The book examines how cultural
patterns and normative standards are
established through individual practices and
group interaction, and aims to show how
participants in the scene became converted
to actions that they once thought
unacceptable - for a substantial majority this
was amphetamine use, and for a minority,
opiate use and burglary.
The book shows how early social
background experiences influenced how
quickly participants started using
amphetamines and whether they
subsequently became involved in criminal
activities such as the burglary of
pharmacies, and suggests a link between
burglary of chemist shops, opiate use and
fatalities from drugs overdose. Such highrisk
behaviour is associated with previous
delinquency and early social background,
rather than the nature of involvement in the
subculture. The book shows how early life
influences have a powerful impact on
shaping social identity, attachment to the
subculture, and involvement in crime.
How and why individuals become
involved in the subculture, and the impact it
had on identity, are central themes to the
study. The findings suggest that while
involvement in the Northern Soul scene
provided valued memories and friendships, it
did not impede movement to the
conventional roles and responsibilities of
adulthood. The book concludes with a
summary of its implications for the sociology
of adolescence, subcultural theories and
deviant careers.

i think the post above yours is a lot closer jason, can"t put my thumb on it at the moment though.
Err, I divena...you lot seem to be automatically thinking 'northern', whereas I'm thinking Helene Smith
I mean, the Helene Smith does contain the line "You don't have to be a king to sit upon a throne" and mentions "you've got to be a man" a lot (not "'you don't have to be a man to" as was noted...it does mention "you don't have to be..." etc, a lot though) and is called 'You Got To Be A Man'. All we need is uncle ben to clarify either way and this one can be sewn up.
-
ohh jason you wee funk maestro, wrong tune i think,if its northern it will come to me when, if ever my brain goes into operational mode again ?
Nah, I'll stick with the Helene Smith...sounds dead on it to me.
-
new member here. nice to have found you.
can any of you people help me find out the name of a song? i heard it out the other night, had a belting female vocal. from what i can remember some of the words were 'you don't have to be a man to....' and it goes on to list some things you don't have to be a man to do. and there's definitely a line that says 'you don't have to be a king to sit on a throne'
it was really good so i'll be v happy if anyone knows what it is.
ben.

J, I think you flogged the wrong records. Admittedly the ones you sold are a bit "flavour of the month" (or were) and the ones you kept are proven, long term rarities, but I have always personally loathed both Target and Emmanuel Taylor (just a completely personal opinion, I know many out there love these tunes).
Didn't Ged Parker pick up a MIxed Feelings lately? A great record, nearly a phenomenal one, which is slightly let down by glib backing vocals. The lead on it is brilliant though, whoever he is...
Disagree Gareth - that said I wouldn't mind the Ellipsis back, though I couldn't refuse the offer and couldn't afford one at what it goes for. The K.I.C is a bit throwaway discoey for me that I got bored of quickly but I do miss the Fab Playmates, though the trade more than made up for it. And personally I love the ET and Target so from my perspective, I sold the right ones I reckon.
Anway the man wants to know how much and how available they are - one's that are actually for sale, that is - so we've got
Ellipsis £1500 (ish) for a minter or thereabouts
Fabulous Playmates - £300+
K.I.C - Seen at £800 but realistically...?
Emmanuel Taylor?
Record Player?
Target ?
-
Record Player / Free your mind (Gem City)
K.I.C. / You don't want my love (New Hit)
Ellipsis / People (Briarmeade)
Emanuel Taylor / You really got a hold on me (Bernard)
Target / Give Me One More Chance (Kama)
Mixed Feelings / Sha La La (United)
Fabulous Playmates / I Ain't Gonna Be No Fool for you (Select)
Fucking hell, I've had or have all but the Mixed Feelings.
I flogged my Ellipsis for £1500 last year and traded the K.I.C away. Thorley had one on his site a while back for £800 if that's any kind of indicator. My Fab Playmates went to Norway in a trade probaly 18 months + back - about £300+ for that one
Still got the Record Player, E. Taylor and Target so I don't know how much they go for...these copies ain't going anywhere, I know that much.

Yeah, infact I tend to mistrust sellers who advertise ridiculously over the top (or even just over the top) postage costs, on the basis that because they've advertised that they charge over the top for postage, it kind of generally means they don't know their arse from their elbow. Which then makes me wonder about all sorts of things, ranging from 'can they grade a record' to 'do they know what a post office is'. I've paid (begrudgingly) up to £3 for a record to be sent from the UK only for it to arrive shoved between two bits of (badly) cut out cornflakes box and stuck inside an A4 mailer. With a 65p stamp on it.
The best recent one was some tw*t in the US advertising postage at $12, then trying to charge me $12.99. He sorted that problem out. But you'd assume $12 postage meant airmail, at least. 2 months later the record arrives (via boat) in between two bits of box, sealed with probably the least amount of selotape the guy could find, with a postage label proudly displaying the fee $4.85. I must have been paying for his packing skills.
i had a fairly well known collector (and seller of often outrageously priced modern stuff) try and charge me £10 for registered post on one 45 on ebay! yes it did state it in the auction but i didnt check it, when i questioned that he might be overcharging he flew off the handle, threatened to report me to ebay, then he agreed to 'reduce' it to £6 and sent it 1st class recorded in a brown f*ckin envelope! I DEFY ANYONE TO BEAT THIS......yeah, how that guy is still 'Free' is a mystery. I feel sorry for his cat, Sabu.
-
I heard this great Funk track played by Butch at a Soul weekender in Barcelona last year, it is by Earl English / Apaches and i imagine very rare - well i've never seen it anywhere for sale anyway! Has anybody any idea of the going rate and how many of these are in existence etc?
Ste.
Going rate - lots
Copies in existence (known at least) - not many
Came out twice actually, slightly different mixes. Apaches on Big 8 (with a killer x-over flip) and as Earl English on Six-Toe. Opinions are divided as to which mix is better....either way it's a monster.
-
Goes for about £45-£50...worth every penny. For some reason Mark Shep on here was flogging his...temporary bout of deafness or insanity maybe. ...I can't remember his username though...marks4282 might be the one if my 'research' is good Best off doing a search on here

I don't think they have the original do they? I thought it was the remix.
It's this one...crazy beat have them for £6...worth every penny...brilliant mix.
-
Got this on 7" - UK only on Calibre if I'm not mistaken. Speaking of which, also got the 4 Tops doing "Your Song" on a 7" on Calibre too. I know the 12's of it seem to be plentiful...don't see the 7 so much it seems. What's the going rate on either of those...any ideas?

Funny, I was about to post up a new topic with the very same...

It's supremely mediocre (IMO) and I suppose when you read sales pitches that go along the lines of 'incredible modern soul, blah blah blah' or the like and then it turns out to be the exact opposite you sort get a bit riled and feel like someone's having a laugh or something. Like you say, it's £500 worth of 'obscure recent discovery' which is kind of what you're paying for, regardless of whether it's any good. Sure, great artist name, dreary track. If it was £500 worth of new discovery that was up there with the best and there wasn't the suspicion that there are 'quite a few copies waiting to be dripped out' then it'd probably be worth every penny. But it's not in both cases. That Carmen thing HAS to be (and apologies to the French on here) yet another dodgy French boogie colletor's tactical bidding business...it's happened so times on this type of stuff, usually by French boogie collectors bidding stuff right up probably to increase the percieved value of copies they have, so they can then try to use that (false) auction price to justify their asking prices. Either that or those two guys are mad, deaf or just ill cos it's shite. Discofunk boys, indeed!
