  2. Meaning it's very average. Certainly compared to the Tamboo version, and if you got it instead of the Tamboo issue and hoped it was the Tamboo version you'd be a little 'dissapointed'.

    You're better off asking on the funk forum Neil - used to be easy to pick up (granted not as plentiful as the dodgy version on Age but still around) and it was funk collections it seemed to go into and come out of. At that time it was £25, demand kind of went up for a while and it seemed to peak at around £75. Not seen one for a while though.

    Dunno really - the majority of the action in terms of busy clubs playing the hardcore stuff with the dancefloor in mind (not a chin stoking compare and contrast session) seems to be overseas at the moment.

    Mind you, some people might want you to believe that what you thought were funk records are actually northern...and vice versa :ohmy:

  5. But do you reckon even on the funk scene that in time they might become valuable again if a box load aint flooded the scene of course all of a sudden so is it worth selling or keeping for another time in the future when or if the price might rise again.

    Don't think the Prof Lett or Fabulous Originals will come out in numbers again - well, that said the obvious 'box load' of Fab Originals is still being slowly dripped out but when they eventually stop coming (probably in about 2010) all 75/100+ or so stock copies that appear to have been available will be in collections. The question is by that point will anyone be bothered with it enough to send the price back to £1000 or anywhere near that. Doubt it. Same with the Prof Lett. An infinately better record but again, one of those who's price reflected a time when information and access (and access to information) was still ropey, coupled with the fact that it was a Keb spin (like the Fab Originals for that matter) You could argue that once all copies are gone the price creeps back up and in some cases that may be true (if you're talking finding 25 or less of an indemand title for instance) but for titles found in the 75's to 100's on a relatively small 'scene' like the imaginary funk one, people remember the last lowest price and tend to reference that when coming to buy it. The Mercy Men (owing to the fact that it's utter shite) was a product probably of two people thinking they'd hit the jackpot - the buyer for having a 'really rare, allegedly really good' funk record - and the seller for being able to name his price when said mug rolled up. Whether it's worth holding out for (hopefully) a price rise on those records in the future is unanswerable really. If there was a massive increase in the amount of kids into funk and into collecting funk and DJing funk and thus fuelling the market for funk (not just 'passively liking it a bit') then yeah, maybe, but there's been nothing to suggest that's going to really happen - not in the UK at least. Probably more reflective of the lifestyle choices the next generation are likely to opt for than anything else. I suppose it comes down to what you want from them, if you can afford to keep luxury items sitting on a shelf or if you see them as a 'cashpoint' to draw from now rather than an 'investment' for the future.

    The wendell Western's a funny one. One minute £30 and no-one's bothered, then soon as it's a 2K sam spin...all hell breaks loose. And anyway, I heard that no-one 'panic sold' it...it was more an elaborate wind up. :ohmy:

    I had them both (the Angle 3 and A&T) but flogged the Angle 3 - still got the A&T issue. I supposed if you want both sides then the Angle 3 of Tyra's Song is the one to have (with Take Me back on it) and I guess it's the more indemand of the issues (what with it having both cuts on). I prefer 'Tyra's Song' personally so it didn't hurt to let the Angle 3 go. Man's still got the voice :hypo:

    The album lists at between £20-£40. There is a 7" on Momissey - 70's funk one side, sweet the other. Not bad. About £50 tops (?)

  9. Lots of wisdom on this thread but one thing that I keep coming back to is the thing about 'upfront' playlists. Surely the responsibility for accepting/playing sets that aren't the same old same old rests as much on the shoulders of the punters as it does on the DJs/promoters - obvious statement maybe but true (sure this has been pointed out already but this is now 7 pages long...) It's fine saying (for example) 'reading such and such's playlist you can see they plumbed the depths of the obvious that night in order to rescue things' but away from theorising on an internet forum there is a point where, in the heat of the event, you kinda have to try everything to rescucitate a failing dancefloor and inject some kind of atmosphere into the night. Or just swear at them on the mic, I suppose :thumbsup: Of course, the punter and the DJ's tastes have to meet somewhere on common ground if it's truly going to work: I suppose that's where the punter puts their trust in the DJ (and vice versa) I guess at the NESU we're trying to play stuff we think is good, solid, danceable black soul music first and foremost, that just happens to also have the traits of what might be classed a northern soul record (sometimes). Sometimes we just play Northern Soul records cos they're good and we like them and think other people should/will too. One thing we never do is become robo-dj, a living jukebox there to provide records simply for the purpose of going through the motions. Still the case that it's mainly the more known stuff that you throw in that gets the reaction (for us) - despite that fact that we give out Cds of mainly the 'lesser known' stuff so that folk can become familiar with them. As has been suggested somewhere on this thread (maybe a few times by now) you can play as many - what's the best word - 'unfamiliar' tunes as you like but if your crowd sits there looking at you gone out and then moans that you'd just 'played an hour of tunes for yourself' and destroyed their evening what can you do? Apologise for playing great records that sound like the sort of records you'd assume they'd like cos they're (apparently) into retro black soul music (sometimes also called Northern) but didn't like because they'd not heard them everytime they went out? It still amazes me the stuff you'd assume would be the kind of stuff folk would be up for but bomb. End of the day if you put yourself in the position of entertainer you're responsible for quite a few people's enjoyment, some of which may have conflicting views on what is enjoyable. Perhaps you have to work harder to convince people that they don't know they like something yet, but will do. Maybe if you have to try to convince people you're onto a loser already? Maybe veering off topic and waffling but thought I'd while away half an hour while I burn our coasters, I mean soul club CDs :no:

  11. In the process of moving house and while boxing up the records/playing a few cam across a Ricky Lance (Vance?) 45 on City Lights. West Coast. For the life of me I've had a memory blank on the title but its a part 1 / part 2 jobbie. Personally think its a nice jazzy/mod deep voiced thing. Never seen it or the label before (I'll post scan/clip up later). Anyone know what the hell I'm on about??

    Think he did a couple on City Lights and an album, Rich - Razzle Dazzle being one of them. Yours might be 'Lay Some Cash On The Line' (?) Prefer his 'Super Strong' on Bren over the others I've heard. Weird voice though...sort of sounds like they slowed down the tape a bit and told him to impersonate Barry White until you get used to it laugh.gif
