  1. I don't want to start a big debate on bootlegging, and I agree with Sebastian if it's an only MP3 track or CD track, go ahead. But if it's ok to make a carving out of the downloaded mp3, then it shouldn't be a problem for everyone who wants it. Why bother to make 500 copies, everyone can make one their self. :sweatingbullets:

Funnily enough it's probably more expensive on the individual to get a carver cut than to buy the real record when it comes out! I'm sure anyone downloading and cutting it to a carver would probably want a proper copy when it comes out - in a way cutting one yourself from an MP3 is almost like making your own one-off promo copy to promote the record with, which if it's used for that purpose and not for personal glory (aka covering up new releases for example) can only be a good thing for the band.

  3. Cock waving?? I'm looking forward to JumpingJoan, Jo Wallace & Cookie having a go at this with their collections! :(

Yeah, I realised that kinda didn't apply to the ladies in the strictest sense - mind you, it's not usually them who jump all over sales/wants threads... wicked.gif

  4. Surely it's subjective and depends on the individual.

If you have huge amounts of disposable income then spending heavily on a 'hobby' maybe means something different to if you spend heavily on a 'hobby' in order to convert it into some kind of 'career' (DJing) or if you're buying those expensive objects in order to attain/buy some kind of respect from your peers. The former often needs nothing more than personal satisfaction from acquiring possessions as it's raison d'etre, whereas the latter needs a captive audience of one or more in order to justify the expenditure - there are record buyers out there that would admit to 'not being collectors but DJs', not having a collection but a set of records that are earmarked for DJing, the records being tools for the job first, foremost and probably solely - fair enough. That may rankle against the romantic notion that 'artforms' such as records (produced primarily as commodities to generate an income for those involved in thier production, don't forget) shouldn't be 'reduced' to mere objects to be easily bought and sold once their 'use' has expired. But essentially that's what they are....mass produced objects originally created as an advertisement of the makers abilities. And the more they sold, the better. Of course there are those who are able to both collect and 'use' their collection to DJ with - I guess that's maybe where the true desire shows through: an urge to share the music (though there has to be the inevitable aspect of one-upmanship too, that's just the spirit of being competitive) coupled with a desire to 'have it all' to satisfy a personal crusade.

Why does anyone collect anything? Sense of personal achievement? Generate respect amongst peers? An obsession to have everything? Maybe some people live through their posessions and need to have them as evidence of their existence? Take away the posessions what's left?

I'm not sure about your statement "I have no one these days to display my wares to anymore" seeing as this forum alone provides a perfect platform to display your wares, all you have to do is look in the media section...or in a slightly different way, in the wants/sales posts for that matter: the classic 'mine's not for sale' or 'paid xxx (insert low price) for mine in 1977", friendly but undeniable 'cock waving' done, in one respect out of a need to display the collected wares to peers (and if anyone denies that, they're kidding themselves) Nothing wrong with it but maybe it shows that for some folk there's an innate need to feel that their collection is worth more than the records that it contains: maybe as you hinted at, for some, if it's not shared (in whatever form...DJing, posting up media clips, commenting on sales/wants to tell people that they have a copy of something) maybe it doesn't really exist (like the tree in the woods) In a culture of competitiveness surely one-upmanship is a natural and healthy part of it, keeps it ticking over and keeps people pushing the boundaries. That said I'm not sure spending heavily proves you love the music any more than someone who doesn't have the means to do that. Proves you have more cash and maybe shows that the music is sometimes secondary to just 'owning' things: "Took me 15 years to find this, finally got it, played it twice then filed it away". But like I say, surely it's subjective and people do this for their own reasons.

  5. I had the promo 7" your talking about with long and short version but was told by a friend that there is a 12" but in hindsight your probably right it don't exist thanks for the info

There's one (7") buy it now on ebay if you want it back - $49.99

  6. Take the Halo 45 mentioned in another post here yesterday. Sums in the region of £2,000 were paid by a few individuals to become one of the first to have and play the record, but once such people had it the price in the real world was much harder to gauge: a friend of mine found one in Washington DC a few years ago and actually had great difficulty shifting it at any price on his return to the UK. If a copy of Halo appeared on here priced at £2,000 it simply would not sell.

Really? Not so sure. The market for that sound/era seems to be growing - even on the funk board some people who you assumed were staunch '69-73' funk only collectors have started asking for the late 70's soul-disco funk stuff of late and it seems to be increasing. I'm sure there are still a few serious collectors who have the means to pay £2000 for Halo and would willingly do so...it's not like it really comes up these days and I'm sure a few who want it are missing it. Also, if one was offered most likely the seller would maybe go direct to a few sources that they knew would be more ready to pay than offer it here first. I get asked almost every day for this type of sound from all corners of the globe so I think it's maybe more bouyant than it may seem. That said not sure one has been offered on here before so it remains to be seen.

  7. Someone from the group told me the Dyco issue was pressed up by the manager unbeknownst to the group, essentially making it possibly a bootleg - though maybe the manager was just trying to recoup costs or something  Dunno, what a tune though!

  8. Hi,

just out of interest, how many copies are known of this beauty? I know about three copies....Butch, Sam and one copy must be at John & Ali Nightingale´s home. Some more around?

    tia, andreas

Wrighty got mine a few years ago...I'd only had it about 4 months when he bullied it out of us.

I found out that several 'big names' had passed it up at Yarmouth 6 months before I got it as it was pretty much an 'unknown' at that time (think Keb had been playing it a few months). Every man and his vinyl carving mate's got one now, haven't they? :D

  9. No, the 45 really exists. I've seen it, since a friend of mine has it. Asking here, mainly because maybe somebody has a ready pic of it. There is one somewhere on a Japanese website, but I couldn't locate it at the moment.

Definately issued on a 45 - missed it on ebay a few times (seemed to go 'cheap' too...£50ish)

Not sure I ever saved a pic of it - if I did I'll post it up.

  10. Morris - Can we melt the ice - Plush?

UK pressing, out of Sheffield? Something to do with Mike Ward? a DJ from there?

    Morris who? Williams?

Not a UK press to my knowledge, sure others can give more detail on it. Wasn't Ward sent a bunch of these in the 80's? Mine came from a random guy in the US a few years ago, so it'd be strange a UK press ending up there 20 years after it was issued. Love it and play it.
