A double-sider comprising two previously unreleased tracks by the group ‘Upheaval’ which were recorded inside Waupun Correctional Institution.

The 9 piece Wisconsin outfit was formed whilst behind bars, cutting a series of live recordings over a few days in 1979. Several of the group members had no musical training before entering prison, however the band built up its reputation through concerts for inmates, the local public and radio.

Upheaval only had one release to their name, ‘Paradise Lost’ / ‘Now That You’re Gone’, on their self-titled ‘Love’ label. Only 25 copies are thought to have been originally pressed, with even less surviving to the present day.

The two tracks on this 45 have not seen the light of day until now. They were recorded live using only 2 microphones and the only surviving ‘masters’ were in cassette form. Both sides are raw, powerful and soulful – a true upheaval from behind bars.

Looks moody as hell too. The writer credits are across to the side too much on the boot. As well as all the other alarm bells!

What drives the choices of which 'funky' sounds get played or picked up on? I've seen wants for the likes of the Apaches (assuming it's for 'Trying To Make Ends Meet') among other 'straight up' funk sounds (the stuff that's not even 'funky soul' or has a soul element) that are presumably being used at Northern clubs, somewhere(?). Or are they bought to play to a more - erm - continental crowd who don't have a 45+ year NS history but like a broad span of styles (northern and funk included)? 
It's kinda like 'If you like that, you need this, this, this, these, those, that and them. And then that stack, too'.

Perfectly understandable if Colin values his privacy and wishes to keep away from the spotlight of rabid rare soul collectors but surely someone on here knows him well enough to contact him and ask him the big question.

Not sure Paul wants to get involved - asked him a couple of times of facebook but he hasn't been on here to offer any opinion.

Yeah, I guess if David licensed it for the Demon release he'd have supplied them with the photos from any original photo session for the album (on Truth) and subsequently Soul Brother got one of the pics.

Also the Demon release label states clearly that the album was leased from Broadway productions NOT Stax/Truth/Fantasy maybe Fantasy only bought the rights to previously issued Stax product ?

Where/how did Soul Brother get the rights to release it ? if Demon had already done so in the UK ?, this may be a daft question but I'm not an expert on copyright etc.

Just another small point, David Johnson in the sleeve notes shown earlier explicitly states it was never released, I think he would have known.

Kegsy, Ralph at Expansion/Passion does all the licensing work for Soul Brother - both Soul Brother and Ralph have and do work quite a bit with David.

 I don't think the image we used on the RSD/Soul Brother release was scanned or taken from the Demon sleeve - the quality of the pic  we got (via email) was much stronger. It could actually have been the original shot of the picture in the centre of the triptych on the Demon release that we were sent. I'll need to dig out the jpeg Paul sent us to check properly. 

The problem is that the evidence for it not existing (no pics of the original LP/no mention of it existing anywhere - on the net or in print - prior to this thread/ no-one with the LP coming forward: yet) far outweighs the evidence for it existing: a memory of a sale of an album in the 1970s. Come on Mr Dilnot, fix this!
