Cadle had played guitar for disco band LaSo who released a self-titled album on MCA the year before, and he would reapper in 1989 with a couple of cracks at the Hip Hop/House market on the Tough imprint. Classic Sullivans - Shame Shame Shame /We Can Make It - (Master Key) EX - 75 hear Discogs says "1970s US vocal soul group from Altgeld Gardens, the housing projects just south of Chicago. The group consisted of Eddie Sullivan and his two sisters Lorraine and Barbara" so I'm going with that. Sublime crossover number, sounds about 1970ish. The group would also have a 45 out on Kwanza in '74 that's got a similar 'swing' but isn't a patch on this gem. Leon Davis - I Think They Call It Love /Let It Show - (Davis And Goliath) M- - 60 hear Jazzy, New York(?) production from the mid-70s (grasping here), most likely the only thing Leon did and not a bad sole legacy to leave. A few of these did show up about 4 years ago but all sunk into collections. Powerhouse, full on kitchen-sink-and-all type of record, pretty unique arrangements too. Fantastic Soul Inventions - Bim Sala Bim /Rice And Beans - (Disco Soul) EX - 60 hear The band with confusing origins, they apparently never existed instead being an Italian bootleg creation apparently 'recording' versions of popular funk/disco tracks at the time. This is actually Hudson County on RCA except it's not, well, it is...etc! This was also issued on the Aris label out of Italy with a different 'artist' on the flip. Problem is, you can't get this on a Hudson County 7" so you're stuck. Awesome record, though. Al Foster Band - Night Of The Wolf /Night Of The Wolf - (Roulette) EX - 50 hear hold Al Foster Band was a pseudonym for Italian writers and musicians Ivano Alberto Fossati and Oscar Prudente. Their only track as Al Foster Band first appeared on their 1973 LP "Poco Prima Dell'Aurora" on the Italian label Cetra/Numero Uno. The original title was "Tema Del Lupo" (translated as "Theme Of The Wolf"). It was also released on the same label as a 7" in 1974. When Roulette picked it up they chose the American sounding artist name Al Foster Band and changed the track name to "Night Of The Wolf". Nicked that off Discogs! 'Deep Funk' memories of this fierce near four minute gem. Korla with Klass - Think Before You Start /No Other Woman - (Music Master) EX - 150 hear Strange one this. Pretty hard record from California, this was also released (probably first - I'm guessing) by Arlene Bell & The Kenyattas on Velvet in the same year as this, 1978. Lyrically it comes from a female point of view (which is why I presume Bell's version is the earlier issue) yet the lead on Korla HAS to be a dude and yet he's still singing from woman's point of view! Odd. Korla is beefed up power by a power of 10 and is directed straight at your feet. Your disco pleads for this monster. New World - We're Gonna Make It /Help The Man - (Polydor) EX - 400 hear The best record Curtis Mayfield never recorded, this is obviously now a nailed on funky soul classic. Loads of percussion, drama and immediate dancefloor appeal keeps this up there with the best. Never gets old. Rainbow - Do What You Wanna /Buffalo Soldier (When Will They Call) - (Willmington House) EX - 125 hear Thought initially it was a North carolina thing but it could be a Louisianna release. The band possibly also have links to a release out of Phoenix Arizona so a bit of flitting here and there on this one. Great cover version on the 'Do What You Wanna' side backed with a racially-conscious Side 1. Rarely seen 45. Strutt - Said You Didn't Love Him /Time Moves On - (Brunswick (It)) EX - 150 hear From the 1976 'Time Moves On' album, the 45 only saw a release in Italy and contains the best two tracks from the LP. 'Said You Didn't Love Him' is a funky crossover slab of gold, emphatic and classy and bang on the money. 'Time Moves On' is for the disco - a rolling, rumbling, non-stop tour de force for the floor. Veda - What It's All About /Ain't Nothing But A Party - (West Sounds) M- - 150 hear The band had a 1978 release on MW records, not sure if 'What It's All About' is later or earlier but it's definitely the stronger of the two releases. Some of the group have links to West Coast act Sorokas who issued an LP in the mid-80s.
