Just got a package containing a CD and a 45 to use for mastering a forthcoming 7" release and the guy put a $50 value on the package! FFS! Luckily customs seemed to ignore it. Seems like they're very hit and miss.

Look out in due course for a mix featuring some of these and some hangers-on from recent lists: coming soon. Payment info Paypal is fine to soulstacks@gmail.com or a cheque is also good (UK only) Cash sent concealed and registered is ok if you need to do it that way. Or you can call 07542 148 656 Codes: Funk/funky 70s/Disco 60s/Northern/R&B 70s Modern/X-over Elaine Armstrong - Sad But True /Precious Minutes - (King) VG++ £100 hear hear Not trashed or thrashed - a scuff brings this down a grade but it's a firm player. Great King label rarity that only gained wider exposure over the last couple of years. Prices seem to wow and flutter but the quality remains firm. Tyrone Barkley - Man Of Value /Some Kind Of Wonderful - (Midsong) M- £15 hear Classic modern room stuff - this has a canny dish in the wax but play isn't affected. Bernard Calvin - TLC /Instrumental - (Ambush) M- £15 hear Under the radar minor key funky soul - good mixtape action that could work across wider forums. Tony Clarke - Ghetto Man /Love Power - (Chicory) M- £35 hear hear Hardcore angry thumper of a tune - both sides! Crisi - Get On Down /Black Foot - (Effie) VG+ £50 hear Wrighty spin from years agao - kinda ploddy but it's minimalism is it's charm. Scarce record. Deliverance - Sittin Around /Lovin You - (United Sound) M- £20 hear That Gil Scott-Heron sounding thing that I've been championing for years. Old find from Shadows way back when. Fab record. Distance - Get, Get On Down /Paradise - (M.O.D) M- £50 hear Recent excavation that's got all the right elements for the 70s funky soul crowd. Eddie Giles & The Numbers - Sexy Lady /Jelly Roll - (Custom Sound) EX £15 hear Bustling up[tempo 70's Modern soul at its best - kind of a forgotten biggie from back the day. Sounds good now. Ola V Harper - I Wanna Weep /Resisting - (Jewel) M- £40 hear Really good Peppermint Harris production from '65 - kinda bluesy, dark and moody sister soul. The Herbs - There Must Be An Answer /Put A Hurting On My Heart - (Smoke) M- £20 hear Fantastic George Blackwell produced late 60s northern - everything in place to make it a dancefloor bomb. Hot Earth Band - Hard Times /Loneliness - (Rekan) M- £25 hear Not sure where this is from but this somewhat forgotten mid-late 70s sounding funk cut could do well with a reactivation. I.U Soul Revue - Tell Me About It /This Lonely Room - (Afro-American Arts Institute) VG+ £40 hear The IU Soul Revue was founded in 1971, with ethnomusicologist Portia K. Maultsby appointed as the ensemble’s first director. For more than 40 years the "Revue" has wowed its local audience and audiences across the country with dynamic performances of timeless R&B, Soul, Funk, and contemporary Black popular music styles delivered by its commanding male and female vocal ensemble, powerful horn line, and tight rhythm section. Taken from the Afro-American Arts Institute website. Kings Go Forth - Don't Take My Shadow /Instrumental - (Mr C) M- £5 hear Why the hell this wasn't as big a sound as their first 45 is a mystery: that Ebony Stones vibe is there right from the off, it's got a huge, well produced groove and the tune sticks like an earworm. Seen at £50 in recent times, I've got original stock on this so get in. Lil & Rene - Keep A Lite /Tennessee Waltz - (Reprise) M- £15 hear RnB meets gospel in a pulpit somewhere down south. Iinfectious groove on this H.B Barnum production. Lovemakers - When You're Next To Me /When You're Next To Me - (Island (W/L)) M- £10 hear Strong 70s modern obscurity on a big label is the next avenue for diggers: here's a great example. Marie Queenie Lyons - See and Don't See /Daddy's House - (Deluxe) EX £45 hear Nailed on classic. You all know this one. I'm convinced this is the copy I sold about 10 years ago, come back full circle. 4 light clicks near the intro don't spoil the quality of the experience. Dreamy goodness. Rappers - Krunchberry Beast /I've Tried - (Roach (Re)) M- £40 hear hear Early 2000s repress of this always hard to locate funk/sweet soul rarity. Both sides smash it. Even the repro has commanded top dollar in the past. We sold this as a new reissue at Soul Brother when it first appeared. Can't really walk into a shop and buy them box fresh anymore. Tom Sanders - Jammin' In The Big M Town /Doing Bad - (Portra) Ex (Slt Warp Dnap) £25 hear Decent boogie out of Memphis - guess that's the Big 'M' Town he's singing about. Tom Sanders - I'll Get To That /Giving My Love Away - (Portra) Ex (Slt Warp Dnap) £50 hear Discogs doesn't know this one, three others of his are listed but this seems to be omitted (scurries off and adds it) This finds Tom in familiar disco/boogie territory belting out another gem. Flip is a slightly wobbly ballad. T.U.M.E - Love Shortage /Love Shortage - (Mgm) M- £15 hear The Ultimate Musical Experience' were a Bobby Eli produced group out of the West Coast. 'Love Shortage' is one of those well constructed, well produced Emanuel Taylor - You Really Got A Hold On Me /Society - (Bernard) Ex £200 hear Monster two-sider: 'You Really Got A Hold On Me' is the - for want of a better phrase - '70s northern' side while 'Society' is a familiar tale of 1970s America. So good. Robert Taylor - Hot Lady /Time Keeps Ticking By - (Lutall) M- £20 hear Driving West Coast dancefloor number in the form of 'Hot Lady' backed with a perfect crossover flip. Two-fer! The Tempos - Don't Leave /I Need You - (Riley's) EX £20 hear Stunning mid-tempo crossover from Detroit. Sounds like mid-60s perfection. Ed Terry - Don't Let That Love Pass You By /All I Want To Do - (ST Records Inc) M- £75 hear Hard record out of New York, from 1976, the top side is an under-discovered dancefloor burner while the flip show signs of a JR Bailey influence. Good one. Tomorrow's Edition - Be Real /Be Real - (Gang (W/L)) EX £25 hear Maybe one of the lesser known cuts by this great outfit, this is a kind of 'message' song that fits the 70s funky soul thing perfectly. Truth - Touch Me /Coming Home - (Devaki) M- £20 hear Such a good two-sider, been championing this for years. Never gets old. Had a lot of interest a short while back and rightly so. United 8 - Gettin Up Town (To Get Down) /Ain't It Good - (Atlantic (Demo)) VG++ £40 hear Classic rare groove type sound, one my early 'big wants' - think I actually bought this and Tony Avlon together that day! Must've been 'buy 45s on Atlantic' day… Vibrating Vibrations - Surprise Party For Baby /Right On Brother - Right On - (Neptune) VG £25 hear Classic feel good northern favourite with a roughed up funky flip. Conservative VG grade - not deep scratches and plays loud and clear. Shirlean Williams & The Tempos Band - Ease It To Me /This Is A Song - (El Virtue ) VG+ £250 hear One of my favourite sister funk tunes, you get two hits in oone here: that break beaty type 'This Is A Song' with its tricky rhythm is well balanced by the 'Doobie Brothers' intro of 'Ease It To Me'. Quality North Carolina rarity written by bassist Nolla Mainor. True sister funk all the way here! Vinyl has quite few light marks but they don't affect play. Wreckin Crew - You Don't Care /Found The Groove - (Star Ville) M- £25 hear Another record I've had for years and much nicer to own the nice vinyl Starville issue than the styrene Newman cut. Great record. Two limited new releases Nicole Willis/Ebony Evans - You Got Me Moonwalking /Loving You Is All I Wanna Do - (Oslo Soul Experience) New £8.50 hear hear 10 years of Oslo Soul Experience celebrated with this limited issue 45. Two strong sides on a 7" destined to sink into collections worldwide. Awesome. Lady L - Tonite /Loves Master Plan - (Boogie Back) New £8 hear hear Hyper limited UK 7" single featuring the writing talents of G.C Cameron and Ernie McKone among others. Faultless modern soul (in the proper sense of the word) you get two sides of well produced, well written grooves that tip a wink to old school values whilst still being of its time. Not got many of these now. Great new limited Modern Soul 45 (as above) Wanted to highlight a really good new Modern Soul 45 that I know a lot of you have already bought from me but some may not have heard yet. Super limited and I don’t have many left so dive in if you want it. It’s by Lady L (a.k.a Linda Dixon who recently tied the knot with none other than the legendary G.C Cameron) and the record is a collaboration between the two plus a couple of the UK’s best songwriters and performers. It’s already caused a real stir on the Modern Soul scene and will be the sort of thing that a wider audience will want when they can no longer buy one (easily, or for eight quid!) …and on the subject of new music, check out the great Nicole Willis/Ebony Evans 45, issued to celebrate the Oslo Soul Experience’s 10th anniversary. At the time of this list going out these are winging their way to me so if you want one it’ll be mid-week I guess, before I get them: well worth the wait, though. Lastly, having another crack at a t-shirt. This time only 10 needed to be signed up for in order for the order to go in, plus they're cheaper at $12.50. Check this link for more info

Great New Modern Soul 45 - Ltd To 120 Copies: Lady L - Tonite
Jason S replied to Jason S's topic in Record Sales
Anyone needing this, just got a few more through then that's it. This is a really strong modern soul two sider that will become highly sought after in a year or so once it gets wider attention. Get on it now if you like this kind of sound! -
Big list of items, 95% of which are reduced from previous list prices - tons of good records here that would be better off with you lot than me. You can hear some of these on my new mixcloud mix https://www.mixcloud.com/Soulstacks/soulstacks-october-3rd-2013/ PM or email any wants - soulstacks@gmail.com Black Nasty - Party On 4Th Street/Freakish Self (Big Hit) - EX - 30 hear Tough one and best from them, from the pen of Johnnie Mae Matthews comes this great slab of Detroit party funk with that break intro. Flip has legs, too. Fruit - Say It/If You Feel It Say Yeah (Cypress) - M- - 40 hear hear 1978 Florida on the Cypress label. The studio is still operating to this day — google ‘em. Fruit liked doing long songs, both sides clocking at well over 4 mins. Two good late 70s funky soul dancers. Modern Times - Stompin Crazy Legg/Happy Man (Golden World (Label Wear)) - VG+ - 30 hear Possibly the last 7"³ release on Golden World Records, this 1973 offering does exacty what it says on the label: it’ll have you Stompin’ your Crazy Legg (sic) and nodding your crazy headd and waving your crazy armss around(d) Torques - Bumpin/Mercy Mercy (Lemco) - M- - 40 hear hear 1965 killer instrumental from this busy Lexington, Kentucky imprint. Dominated by a parping sax and laced with hammond this a boogaloo/r&b dream. Monster. Moorish Vanguard - Sitting In The Sunshine Of Your Love Part 1/Sitting In The Sunshine Of Your Love Part 1 (Polydor (Wol)) - M- - 50 hear Really good uptempo female lead dancer from 77, featuring the vocals of Barbara Bey, that is apparently mis titled on the Polydor issue as the correct title is Sitting In The Sunset of Your Love(!) Blue Notes - Standing By You Girl /It's Over - (Glades) M- - 8 hear one copy left Always rated this one. Still a bit under the radar in terms of exposure, it comes from the 1977 album ‘The Truth Has Come To Light’. Much busied producer George Chocolate Perry was at the controls here so you really on a tight groove. Final Edition - Betcha Can't Love Just One /Betcha Can't Love Just One Part 2 - (Vap) M- - 15 hear Very under the radar modern soul from 1980 that deserves a listen if you don’t know it. Jd Hall - I Wanna Get Into You /Freak On Down - (J.D.H - original not later pressing) M- - 150 hear So, here’s the rub. If you google it you’ll find the thread on Soul-source (on here) explaining the differences between this press (from the early 80s) and a later issue which seems to now go for money. Here’s a proper late 70s/early 80s original of this most sublime of modern soul 45s…considered by many to be a grail for years, it also saw a dreadful issue on 12"³ — ‘orrible thing that. You want this. Echomen - Let's Get Together /Talk Is Cheap - (Shelia) VG++ - 60 hear New Jersey funk on one side, sort of proto Northern on the flip. Check the clip of the flip you can tell they recorded it live. There’s the audience in there at the start and everything. Bet that gig smashed it! Bit noisy in the pressing but the music wins out. Lee Fields - Tyra's Song /You're My Weakness - (A&T) EX - 60 hear Gem of a record and lyrically I prefer this near 3 minute dedication to his lady that Lee Fields lays down to the Angle 3 version. Lovely live feel to the session, you can hear the sax bouncing off the booth! Jam Factory - It's Jam Factory Time /Love Do Or Die - (Jam Factory Corporation) EX - 25 hear For some reason I’m imagining this is out of Ohio or somewhere near(?).don’t know why, probably wrong. Seems like an obscure one. This is one of those ‘band showcase’ type tunes — the sort that tell you that there’s a band, this is their sound/name etc. pretty decent,, late sounding effort, bit guitary in parts but playable. Flip it for some homemade sweet soul stuff. Rickey Andrews - The Next Time /Take Me Back - (RWA Records) M- - 30hear From a recent haul, this was a tough one but a haul has made them affordable: for how long remains to be seen. Great rolling funky mid 70s(?) Georgia soul. Lang Cook And X-Y-Z Affair - Chocolate Stuff /More Chocolate Stuff - (Evolution) EX 25 hear Miami, Florida release from 1979 for this private modern boogie dancer which also came out on the Aquarius imprint. There isn’t a huge difference between the two — if anything the Evolution issue sounds less demo-like without the rowdy shouty vocals of the other cut. Lang Cook came back in ’84 to grace the planet with one of the wackiest boots and jacket combo ever as witnessed on his album “She’s Hot With 2000 Watts”. Fantastic Cousins - Come Down Junkie /Why Oh Why - (E. Leonard ) M- 75 hear Hard hitting message-funk, and one of those that you find yourself going “hello, this sounds better than I remember it”. Not sure where it’s out of but there are Hispanic connections, unless of course Lou Gonzales was actually a Welsh dude with a Latino name. Definately not a white garage band, unless they were a white garage band. Pat Hunt - Super Cool /Everybody's Somebody's Fool - (Early Bird) VG++ 25 hear A member of the 4 J’s and the Wooden Nickels (along with Brenda and Patrice Holloway) Ms Hunt struck out on her own with this late 60"²s(?) staple funk favourite, the kind of empowerment lyrics that the lasses liked to sing in those days: basically calling out dudes who think they’re all that. It only clocks in at just over 2 minutes but she gets the message across loud and clear. Very club-friendly groove. Korla with Klass - Stop Before You Start /No Other Woman - (Music Master) EX - 100 hear Strange one this. Pretty hard record from California, this was also released (probably first - I'm guessing) by Arlene Bell & The Kenyattas on Velvet in the same year as this, 1978. Lyrically it comes from a female point of view (which is why I presume Bell's version is the earlier issue) yet the lead on Korla HAS to be a dude and yet he's still singing from woman's point of view! Odd. Korla is beefed up power by a power of 10 and is directed straight at your feet. Your disco pleads for this monster. One time Soul Sam spin. Mad Hatters - Mad Hatters Get Down/Free At Last (Peg Leg Bates) VG++ (wol) £50 hear Awesome 45 very much in the funky disco/soul vein so popular now. A steal. Willie Bobo - Gotta Hustle On (Jupiter Jazz) EX £25 hear Had a couple but down to my last one. Monster jazzy funk instrument - hard to categorize - check the clip Also anyone still waiting on the I've been promised a few more by Tuesday (supposed to be last Thursday but ran into problems) so hold tight! Agreed, think this is a lot more under the radar than that other one

Moorish Vanguard - Sitting In The Sunshine Of Your Love Part 1/Sitting In The Sunshine Of Your Love Part 1 (Polydor (Wol)) - M- - 50 hear Fascinating history behind this record and not least the band themselves. See the link at the end for a great article on the group. As for the music, its a really good uptempo female lead dancer from 77, featuring the vocals of Barbara Bey, that is apparently mis titled on the Polydor issue as the correct title is Sitting In The Sunset of Your Love(!) The full details of the murky origins of the Polydor issue are contained in the link but in short, Philly group The Moorish Vanguard Concert (many of whom had been with the Interpretations on Bell before converting to Islam) had entered International Recording Studios in Augusta, GA to lay down this song. At the time they were unaware that James Brown owned the studio and he just happened to rock up 20 mins after their session. After the band had cut the tracks (to later release it on a 45 on the Country Eastern imprint) they left the studio and headed out in their car, only to hear, blasting out from a JB Owned local radio station, the song they’d just recorded! Brushing it aside as a one off the band embarked on a tour, evertually arriving in Atlantic City in the summer of 77. It was there that a friend told them they’d heard their single on the radio, which the band found strange as the record had only been sold at the band’s gigs in the southern states. It became clear that James Brown had orchestrated the record’s release on Polydor (complete with incorrect title) and had even noted himself as producer! After a long and drawn out court case the band were moderately compensated though it contributed to the break up of the group. Totally fascinating. Check the link for some great pics of the group, too. https://hotpeasandbutta.com/moorish-vanguard-concert/ Artistic Sounds - Give It Up /Just Be Strong - (Savoy) M- - 20 hear Superb Gospel funk from 1977 out of New Jersey. Tells all kinds of stories about the evils of adultery, prostitution and fur coats. Fur coats, tsk. Blue Notes - Standing By You Girl /It's Over - (Glades) M- - 8 hear one copy left Always rated this one. Still a bit under the radar in terms of exposure, it comes from the 1977 album ‘The Truth Has Come To Light’. Much busied producer George Chocolate Perry was at the controls here so you really on a tight groove. Al Downing - I'm Just Nobody /I Love To Love - (Polydor) M- - 20 hear Well known modern end of Northern, this still sounds so good despite being played a bazillion times already. Lovely copy…nearly looks new. Final Edition - Betcha Can't Love Just One /Betcha Can't Love Just One Part 2 - (Vap) M- - 15 hear Very under the radar modern soul from 1980 that deserves a listen if you don’t know it. Joe Washington - Blueberry Hill /Look Me In The Eyes - (West Sounds) M- 60 hear hear Always thought this was a West Coast release (doesn’t take a genius to conclude that, judging by the label name, I know) this sounds like they’re doing a promo for a club called the Blueberry Hill. Produced by Eddie Adams who was also involved in some of the Shades of Joy projects, this found its way onto the first Deep Funk compilation all those years back and still brings back memories of Sundays at Jo Jo’s. Stunning deep flip too...give it a listen. Here's list 10. There were a few more records on this list at 9am but loads have sold to email recipients;. Some crackers left, though. PM or email any wants - soulstacks@gmail.com Black Nasty - Party On 4Th Street/Freakish Self (Big Hit) - EX - 40 hear Tough one and best from them, from the pen of Johnnie Mae Matthews comes this great slab of Detroit party funk with that break intro. Flip has legs, too. Fantastic Epics - We Do It All Up In Here /Let's Get Together (Kelton) - VG - 60 hear hear Rough copy that plays better than the visual grade, not seen many minters of this great Chicago two-sider. You’ve got the Ian Wright schooled funk side with a great northern flip. Two-fer. Fruit - Say It/If You Feel It Say Yeah (Cypress) - M- - 50 hear hear 1978 Florida on the Cypress label. The studio is still operating to this day — google ‘em. Fruit liked doing long songs, both sides clocking at well over 4 mins. Two good late 70s funky soul dancers. Gwen McCrae - 90% Of Me Is You/It's Worth The Hurt (Cat) - EX - 25 hear Nailed on ‘rare groove’ clasisc that will never ever sound old. Modern Times - Stompin Crazy Legg/Happy Man (Golden World (Label Wear)) - VG+ - 40 hear Possibly the last 7"³ release on Golden World Records, this 1973 offering does exacty what it says on the label: it’ll have you Stompin’ your Crazy Legg (sic) and nodding your crazy headd and waving your crazy armss around(d) Public Company - Got To Touch Your Face/Hearts And Flowers (Rca Victor) - EX - 30 hear Possibly the Public Company’s only release this 1970 dance floor banger deserves a lot more action…builds and builds in that mad crescendo. Give it a spin if you don’t know it. Torques - Bumpin/Mercy Mercy (Lemco) - M- - 50 hear hear 1965 killer instrumental from this busy Lexington, Kentucky imprint. Dominated by a parping sax and laced with hammond this a boogaloo/r&b dream. Monster. Check the link for some great pics of the group, too. https://hotpeasandbutta.com/moorish-vanguard-concert/ Michael Wycoff - Looking Up To You/Looking Up To You (Rca (Promo)) - EX - 50 hear Slick 1982 major label soul shouldn’t sound this good, right. Sold half of these now (weird fact...all to guys called Andy! Non-Andy's are also welcome ) -
I always wonder if people get up and check the matrix numbers before deciding if they're going to dance to something or not. How would this be 'policed' and who would be the designated ovo cop?

Here’s the story: “Mississippi born singer Linda Dixon aka Lady L is a well established performer on the soul gospel & blues scene in the US. Known as the dynamic diva of soul she is renowned for her hard hitting high energy performances. In 2012 Lady L met singer-songwriter producer GC Cameron former lead singer of the Spinners and the Temptations, best known for his Motown classic hits “it’s so hard to say goodbye to yesterday” and “it’s a shame”. After watching an impressive live show by Lady L, G.C.Cameron and Lady L teamed up and started working together”. The result is this, Boogie Back’s 2nd 45. There's that Bill Williams on Dump Off that's a NC thing isn't it? The credits seem to point that way: co written by Slack Johnson who worked with Walt Grady
