  3. Incredibly the new (forthcoming) Sharon Jones album hasn't had a mention. As far as straight up northern cuts 'Stranger To My Happiness' has that immediate, familiar sound that could bring it some action (might need a 45 release though  ) The album is rock solid - strong mix of deep, funk, northern, and R&B - pretty much exactly what you'd expect.

Got clips of the rest of the tracks here

Out in the UK on 13th January

  4. I'm trying to catch up with the more new contemporary stuff, don't know if this has received many plays but I'm spinning this Nashville tune quite a lot !

derobert and haftruths - the joy

Good new album coming out in January too!

  5. Handful of 45s all with prices drops - some good records here all with clips: give them a spin if you don't know them. You can see them on the website here

Also just got my last copies of two of the best 'reissue' (if you can call unreleased records reissues...) that I had last year: He3 Project - Make It Sweet and Howeefeel - People Of The World (now sold out at the label, Ltd to 300 copies and pretty much gone) Two previously unreleased 70s bangers!

Email soulstacks@gmail.com or PM to grab anything.

    70s Modern/Boogie/Disco

Eddie Giles - Sexy Lady (Custom Sound) M- £15 £10

Loud as hell record, rolling, uptempo dancer

Blue Notes  Standing By You Girl (Glades) M- £10 £8

Steal for the price! Another uptempo 70s Modern dancer.

    Lang Cook and X-Y-Z Affair - Chocolate Stuff (Evolution) M- £35 £30

Stronger of the two issues, this slightly left field funky 70's Miami moment has legs...

    James D Hall - I Wanna Get Into You (J.D.H) M- £250 £150

Not one of the recent (as in last 7/8? years) pressings of this record, this is a rare original issue - you can tell the two apart from the different paper quality, slightly different paper colour and the fuzzy text on the 2nd press as well as other details. There's a thread on the subject on

    Northern/R&B

Bobby Boyd - Whatcha Gonna Do About It (Bang) EX £20 £10

Another steal, probably more classed as crossover, this is a faultless 130 seconds of music.

    Lil & Rene - Keep  a Lite (Showerin' Down) (Reprise) M- £15 £12

Gospel meets powerhouse R&B, this is probably under appreciated - give it a spin.

Jimmy Moore - Crawlin' (Legrand) EX (wol)  £20 £15

From the 'Church Street Sally' guy this crops up probably a lot less than his SPQR outing.

    Funk

Hot Earth Band - Hard Times (Rekan) M- £25 £20

Not sure where this is from but this somewhat forgotten mid-late 70s sounding funk cut could do well with a reactivation

    Raw Image — Black Bourgeoise (Phil-La Of Soul) M- £50 £30

Still one of me favourties, reminds me of walking back home in the early morning light from Deep Funk with my minidisc player at full blast blissfully unaware of the London mayhem going on at that time of day. *smiles. Two good sides

    Torques — Bumpin (Lemco) M- £50 £40
1965 killer instrumental from this busy Lexington, Kentucky imprint. Dominated by a parping sax and laced with hammond this a boogaloo/r&b dream. Monster.

Pat Hunt — Super Cool (Early Bird) VG £30 £25
A member of the 4 J’s and the Wooden Nickels (along with Brenda and Patrice Holloway) Ms Hunt struck out on her own with this late 60"²s(?) staple funk favourite, the kind of empowerment lyrics that the lasses liked to sing in those days: basically calling out dudes who think they’re all that. It only clocks in at just over 2 minutes but she gets the message across loud and clear. Graded at VG but this is a super loud press and the surface marks don't spoil the effect.

Not trashed or thrashed — a scuff brings this down a grade but it’s a firm player. Great King label rarity that only gained wider exposure over the last couple of years. Prices seem to wow and flutter but the quality remains firm.
  6. Finally just got these back in and they're going out fast.

Too late for Xmas delivery now (unless you want to fork out £7 for Special Delivery) but will get all paid orders in the post if received by 3pm today.

Pms/email to soulstacks@gmail.com or click the links under the items to order through the site.

Thanks to all who bought from me this year - have a peaceful Xmas

(P.S - anyone still waiting for a Valdons, 94 East, King Tutt etc. from me: all records are 'in transit' - I guess it's xmas and it's all grinding slowly at the moment. Very frustrating. Even more so when distributors start ignoring you because they can't handle whys and wherefores! Bare with me! We won't even mention the Roy Roberts reissue - might need to find an alternative pressing plant for that one...recommendations?)

  8. Various - Eccentric Soul: Omnibus Box Set - 45 7" Singles, 106 Page 7" x 7" Hardback book, Download coupon, Record Box. £220 delivered (UK only)

Someone asked me about the Northern content in this box so I knocked together a mix of what I picked out as the most obvious Northern bits: kind of hurried so may have missed something but these are a good representation.

You can hear and see the full tracklisting here - all your Christmas problems solved in one box

    Both sides bang!

In the meantime, you want to be getting on this. How this was never originally released is bewildering...give it a spin. First vinyl issue of this, so it's an original 45.

...oh and don't miss the J.B Bingham on Soul Junction. Just had all the new releases on the site playing in the background and not a duffer in there

  10. Finally after months of trying to get this one in stock, these landed this morning: blood, sweat, swearing and ever moving release dates adding to the fun.

Half already gone, I think this is awesome - up there with the KGF biggie from a few years back.
The back story on this is simple. The Valdons recorded a bunch of unreleased demos that were shelved back at the start of the 70s before fate brought two Twin Cities musical forces together to 'reconstruct' the early sketches and produce a finished article. This first ever pressing of these tracks sees an uptempo, funky soul dancer sharing the same disc as the all-too-brief but killer sweet soul flip side. Don't miss!

  11. Box number 01620 arrived purchased from Amazon £38 all present most play well a few play less well but no jumps even though none of them lay flat on a standard SL1210 platter matt, also there appears to be a greasy residue on certain sides.

In addition to the above some appear off center when playing (or spindle hole is over size) - this along with the warp could cause tracking error( skipping) if the arm is not correctly set up

Oh yes! and my box was not sealed sounds like last minute quality control ?

Overall I'd rate the package 7/10

Richards sleeve notes are in depth and detailed 10/10

    Triode

Bloody hell, I don't think most ordinary mortal sellers could have bought them for £38! You did well there (pricewise)

  12. In stock now - brand new Soul Junction 45 from J.B Bingham. Two previously unreleased gems: great modern dancer on the 'Ego Trip' side but don't overlook the mid tempo stepper on the flip.

Just got stock of four killer 45s from the Eccentric Soul label plus a couple of the amazing Eccentric Soul: Omnibus box sets.

The Calvin Harris will be of interest from a Northern Soul perspective: the Flyte Tyme and 94 East are great boogie bangers and the Master Plan Inc is a killer funky soul number: the flip is straight up 70s funk class.

J.B Bingham - People On A Ego Trip /She's On Strike - (Soul Junction) New £9

J.B Bingham is best known for his 1976 modern soul anthem “All Alone By The Telephone/Live And You Learn” on United Artists Records. A second U.A. release “She’s Gone/Keep On Walking” also received some attention from the modern soul fraternity but never reached the popularity of his aforementioned release. Both of these releases were recorded under the auspices of H.B. Barnum and Steve Binder. These sessions yielded a total of 7 tracks which Barnum and Binder then took to U.A.
The powers that be at U.A chose the four tracks previously mentioned for release but declined on the other three.
So these three tracks then remained unissued until 2011 Soul Junction contacted J.B Bingham asking the inevitable question did he have any unissued track’s? The result of which you now have before you two out of the three unissued tracks, back to back on a 45. The excellent upbeat message song “People On A Ego Trip” backed with the more mid tempo offering “She On Strike”

Previously unreleased, this 1972 pair of Calvin Harris’ masterfully crafted Earl Wiley-produced sweet soul demos might’ve stayed totally unknown, if it weren’t for Ed Cody’s devious forethought. An engineer at Chicago’s Stereosonic facility, Cody duped himself a submaster reference copy of the complete session. In ’73, Wiley heard “Love Won’t Pay The Bills” on 45–credited to a group called Elevation–and instantly recognized the Cody-engineered track as his own. Nearly 40 years later, through Numero Group research into Stereosonic, Cody, and Wiley, a cache of Cody masters presented themselves for new evaluation. The alternately buoyant and sobering odes to domesticity reproduced here finally grant honey-voiced Harris and the talented Wiley their long-deserved due.

This pair of Minneapolis-by-way-of-Chicago tracks masterfully capture Master Plan Inc.’s silky vocal moves and break-heavy, horn-laden funk riffs. Led out of the early ’70s by vocalist Doug Shorts - alongside guitarist Joe Stevenson, drummer Dean Knox, and bassist Eddie Manning - Master Plan Inc.’s brief 1975 furlough in Minneapolis came at an opportune moment, as rising studio wiz David “Z” Rivkin scoured his Twin City environs for black talent. A year shy of his contract-fetching demo for local prodigy Prince Rogers Nelson, Rivkin mapped out the Sound 80 facility for Master Plan, who put down four tracks. Shorts cracked his piggy bank, paid Rivkin for the Sound 80 tapes, and brought them to Chicago, where he paired up at Stereosonic with engineer Ed Cody, for mixing and finishing touches. Plans for a pressing fell through, and Master Plan Inc. sketched out several new lineups before folding in 1980.

94 EAST has become a Minneapolis Sound buzzword owing to the fact that Brooklyn transplant and bandleader Pepe Willie hired a 16-year-old Prince Rogers Nelson to add lead guitar to a bundle of his originals at Minneapolis’s Cookhouse Studios in the winter of 1975. Known colloquially as “The Cookhouse 5,” session highlight “If You See Me” makes its vinyl debut here and features on the superb compilation Purple Snow: Forecasting The Minneapolis Sound. An absolute beast of a thing, this custom record box comes packed with 45 — yeah 45 — 7"³ singles spanning a galaxy of styles, tempos and moods as you can see from the tracklisting below. God knows how much work went into building this monster but the result is a lifetime’s worth of listening pleasure with an amazing book thrown in for good measure. The 45s work out at around £4.90 or something each, and then there’s the reading material which I’m sure is only available with the set. And then you’ve got the record box..and then a download coupon. When you think you’re paying £50 and up for a box of seven motown 45s (as good as that box is) this set represents ridiculous value for money. Ok, so the outlay is heavy but come on, you don’t flinch when you fork out £220 for a battered old 45, huh? Released last year, this is a timeless acquisition that’ll last forever. Hey, and it’s nearly Christmas: have a word with the big man with the red suit.   :D

  14. Just taken delivery of four new/recent 45s from the Eccentric Soul label.

Some really good sounds here - mainly 70s/boogie stuff but check the Calvin Harris for a great bit of unreleased Northern.

All 45s can be browsed here

And if you feel like treating yourself (or being treated) I also have a couple of the amazing Eccentric Soul: Omnibus Box Sets from last year - 45 x 7" singles, a record box, book and download coupon for the lot. Amazing. Check it here £220 delivered in the UK.
